SUMMARY:Rewilding The Mind with Mánchan Magan
DESCRIPTION:A true national treasure\, Manchán Magan is holding a 70-minute symposium exploring the resurging interest in Irish history\, and the new connection people are feeling with the spirit and the lore of the land of Ireland. \nBeginning with the creation myth and origin story that Irish ancestors have passed down to their forebears\, he examines the mythological and archaeological clues to how our antecedents identified with both the physical realm\, and the magical realms that surround it. \n“Ultimately\, this talk is a celebration of the extraordinary heritage our ancestors have passed down to us and how it can inspire and empower us\, guiding us in how to live\, how to feel and how to relate to the wider world. It will also explore the wider resonances of Ireland’s heritage with Indigenous cultures and Vedic India.” \n19th November \nMermaid Arts Centre\, Wicklow \nmermaidartscentre.ie

SUMMARY:Future Academies: Maser and The Dublin Boy's Club
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Boys Club is a nomadic man’s group exploring healthy masculinity\, where men can learn to communicate better with each other\, and grow into the most authentic versions of themselves. \nOriginally hosted in Berlin by meditation teacher\, spiritual guide and one time editor of Totally Dublin\, Conor Creighton\, this idea has been brought to Dublin in partnership with Atelier Now – the creative studio of internationally acclaimed artist\, Maser. \nThe club was originally established in response to rising suicide levels\, anxiety and depression amongst men. The club has taken place in prisons\, schools\, homes\, storage containers\, bars and bedrooms\, in Los Angeles\, New York\, Limerick\, the Mojave Desert. \nThis fascinating event is part of the current series of talks at The RHA referencing many of the initial values of the academy\, such as community\, collectivity and belonging to a group\, in looking at new models of artist collectives or communities of interest. \nFree. RHA 5.30pm – 6.30pm Wednesday February 21st. Further details here.

SUMMARY:Future Academies: Electronic Sheep
DESCRIPTION:Electronic Sheep was established in 1998 by NCAD alumni and multi-disciplinary artists Brenda Aherne and Helen Delany. The duo’s distinct approach comprises drawings and typographic jacquards based on narrative storylines based on their personal lives and professional practices. \nTheir approach sees them regularly working with artists\, historians and activists\, often to the benefit of social initiatives and charitable agencies. This makes them the ideal guests for the current series of talks at The RHA referencing many of the initial values of the academy\, such as community\, collectivity and belonging to a group\, in looking at new models of artist collectives or communities of interest. \nFree. SUMMARY:Naomi Klein
DESCRIPTION:Doppelganger is the latest work of author\, social activist\, and filmmaker Naomi Klein. It starts off as an amusing look into the confusion and conflation which exists online between herself and Naomi Wolf. “Most confusingly\, my doppelganger and I once had distinct writerly lanes (hers being women’s bodies\, sexuality\, and leadership; mine being corporate assaults on democracy and the climate crisis). But over a decade ago\, she started talking and writing about power grabs under cover of states of emergency – and the once-sharp yellow line that divided those lanes began to go wobbly.” In the explorations\, Klein travels down the conspiracy rabbit hole discovering why millions of people have entered an alternative political reality. \nRDS\, Friday September 29

SUMMARY:Chelsea Manning
DESCRIPTION:Chelsea Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the largest leak of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The junior intelligence analyst released over 251\,000 diplomatic cables and more than 482\,000 Army reports. Fortunately\, President Obama commuted her sentence. She recently published a memoir README.txt\, where she talks about the leaks and her experiences as a trans person in the army. She’s triggered discourse about whistleblowing\, government transparency\, and national security. Oh\, and she also DJs on occasion. \nVicar Street\, Saturday July 8\, €27.50

SUMMARY:Entangled: Exploring the Relationship Between Quantum Technologies and The Arts
DESCRIPTION:What exactly are quantum technologies and what impact do they have on society? What opportunities do they offer\, and what ethical and ecological questions do they pose? How can civil society play a role in their regulation? Can the arts help us to better understand and communicate about them? \nThese are among the questions that will be explored at ‘Entangled‘\, a public event at the Goethe-Institut Irland that shines a light on the current landscape of quantum computing and examines the relationship between quantum technologies and the arts. \nThe event forms part of ‘Living in a Quantum State’\, a new initiative by the Goethe-Institut\, which fosters public dialogue around the use of quantum technologies in today’s society\, through the lens of art. Hosted by the Goethe-Institut in Dublin\, the event is one of a series of international events taking place in cities around the world\, including in San Francisco\, Beijing\, Berlin and London. \nThe Dublin event will be moderated by Co-founder and CEO of Silicon Republic and Future Human\, Ann O’Dea and will take the format of three conversations between artists\, physicists and philosophers: \n\nProfessor John Goold and Dr Alison Fernandes (Trinity College Dublin) will examine the basics of quantum computing\, through the lenses of physics and philosophy. \nMusician and astrophysics graduate\, Emma Garnett (alias Fehdah) and Professor Harun Šiljak (Trinity College Dublin) will discuss ‘quantum uniqueness’ in the arts and explore how and why artists might develop work with this new technology. \nAnn O’Dea will speak to Dr Florian Carle from the Yale Quantum Institute (YQI) about the intersection of quantum technologies and art\, and the artistic projects that have emerged from YQI’s artist-in-residence programme.\n\nThe conversations will be followed by a musical performance from Fehdah. \n \nThe event will take place at 5pm on Wednesday\, 7th December at the Goethe-Institut at 37 Merrion Square\, Dublin 2. Tickets cost €6 and can be purchased via Eventbrite. \n\nThe event takes place on 7th December 2022. Further details at goethe.de/quantum

SUMMARY:Sail We Must - The Sea Story of Andrew Weatherall and an Irish fisherman
DESCRIPTION:In rural county Cork\, a lone fisherman met a weary traveller who was on his way to a gig. They soon began to exchange stories\, namely tales of the sea. During their conversation\, the seafarer shared a sentiment that would stay with his passenger forever: “fail we may\, sail we must.” \nThe Tenth Man presents Sail We Must directed by Grizzly\, a short film telling the beautiful story of the chance meeting between iconic artist Andrew Weatherall and fisherman Gerard Sheehy. The 10-minute film explores how the words of wisdom Sheehy shared with Weatherall changed his path and went on to influence another generation of musicians and creatives. The film also features Cian Ó Cíobháin who was instrumental in finding Gerard\, as well as Andrew’s close friend and collaborator Sean Johnston. \n“We can’t thank those closest to Andrew enough for allowing us to create this film\,” says Eric Davidson of The Tenth Man. “This is a celebration of club culture\, dance music\, and the cultural ties that bind us all together. But more importantly\, it’s a celebration of a once in a generation artist\, Andrew Weatherall.” \nSail We Must is screening February 16th in Dublin’s The Sugar Club\, featuring a live discussion between Cian Ó Cíobháin\, Johnny Moy\, and Billy Scurry about Andrew’s links to Ireland\, as well as a DJ set from Billy Scurry inspired by Andrew’s life. All proceeds from the evening will go to Andrew’s family and the charities that meant the most to him. \nFor those who can’t make the Dublin launch\, the film will be premiering live online on Mixmag on February 17th. \n@tenthmanhello \n@grizzly directors \nthetenthman.com \n \n

SUMMARY:New Now Next: Lacaton & Vassal
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Architecture Foundation’s final New Now Next live virtual talk of 2021  brings together four of the world’s most acclaimed and forward-thinking architects to discuss their work and pressing architectural issues of our time. \nThroughout their careers\, Lacaton & Vassal have pioneered alternatives to city plans that call for the demolition of social housing. Instead\, they offer a strategy that saves the building while prioritising the needs of the inhabitants\, the environment\, and the wider community. The Paris-based duo Anne Lacaton and Jean-Phillipe Vassal were recipients of the 2021 Pritzker Prize and key projects of theirs include the renovation of a 1960s housing block in Bordeaux (530 Dwellings at Grand Parc); the adaptive reuse of a former shipyard in Dunkirk to create the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais art gallery; and the overhaul of the Palais de Tokyo Museum in Paris. \n \n\n\n\nNathalie Weadick\, Director of the Irish Architecture Foundation says: \n“This is timely! Here in Ireland\, when buildings go out of commission\, we automatically chose removal and replacement\, without a second thought about the impact demolition has on climate change. At a critical juncture of net zero targets\, I urge you to listen to Anne Lacaton and Phillippe Vassal about the value of retention and reuse. You will be inspired to do change the discourse.” \n\n\n\nA discussion and Q&A after their presentation will be moderated  by Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell from Grafton Architects. These local legends recently  won the 2021 Riba Stirling Prize for Kingston University’s free-flowing Town House\, were the 2020 laureates of the Pritzker Architecture and curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. They even graced the cover of our issue back in January 2018 which we hear they still cite as the greatest thrill of all 🙂

SUMMARY:Ireland's Generation X with Mark O'Halloran
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Barry McCrea with writer and actor Mark O’Halloran in this edition of Ireland’s Generation X?\, a series of conversations about Ireland’s in-between generation. \n“Generation X” describes the group of people born between 1965 and 1985\, a generation caught between Baby Boomers and Millennials characterised by anti-establishment slacker culture\, cynicism\, irony\, and— after the global economic crash — negative equity. An American term describing American lives\, the moniker perhaps fails to accurately represent the experience of those who came of age during the 1980s and 1990s in Ireland. This series invites artists and writers who grew up in an Ireland shaped by the Troubles\, social justice movements\, EU membership\, the Peace Process\, and the Celtic Tiger\, to share their work and reflect on the social and cultural influences at home and abroad. \nPresented by MoLI in partnership with the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

SUMMARY:New Now Next Live Virtual Talk: SO-IL
DESCRIPTION:SO-IL founders Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu will be joined online by moderator James Taylor-Foster\, Curator of Architecture and Design at ArkDes\, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design\, in Stockholm. \nSO-IL creates structures that establish new cultures\, institutions and relationships around the world. The internationally recognised architecture and design firm are known for developing an iconic structure for the Frieze Art Fair in New York in 2012\, the shrink-wrapped gallery façade of Storefront for Art and Architecture in 2015 and for designing the Home Futures exhibition at the Design Museum in London in 2019. \n \n“We design with time in mind. Whether working with existing structures or building from the ground\, we carefully investigate physical properties and history. In Meisenthal\, France\, we transformed an industrial heritage site into a thriving cultural campus in this way. SUMMARY:Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes
DESCRIPTION:Brass Eye still stands out as one of the most acerbically biting and caustically accurate slices of satire ever served on TV. SUMMARY:Naomi Klein
DESCRIPTION:As always\, Klein is masterfully adept at intersecting and interconnecting crises. This time round with the publication of On Fire\, she’s got her detective board out\, pinning and threading connections between climate change\, the rise of white supremacy (climate barbarism)\, neo-liberalism\, the enhanced sense of nationalism and the war that is waged on our attention spans. “We have to get out of this ‘my crisis is bigger than your crisis: first we save the planet and then we fight poverty and racism\, and violence against women’. That doesn’t work.” She also calls into question the virtue signalling of individuals in this Goliath battle. Heady and necessary stuff from a seasoned social activist. \nNational Stadium\, Friday October 18\, €12-€35 \nPhoto; Kourosh Keshiri

SUMMARY:An Evening with Bob Woodward
DESCRIPTION:The legendary American investigative journalist is best known for teaming up with Carl Bernstein and exposing the Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of President Nixon. A prolific writer on US current affairs\, his most recent book Fear: Trump in the White House\, proved to be a penetrating portrait of a sitting United States president in the first year of an administration.  \nTonight\, in the company of our most distinguished commentator Fintan O’Toole\, Woodward will discuss the state of the US presidency. While this will largely entail preaching to the choir\, Woodward will hopefully have some insights into whether the 23 Democratic candidates who have declared for the 2020 presidency can actually produce one capable of dethroning Trump.

DESCRIPTION:What role does art play in activism? Should artists and designers be responsible for advocating social\, cultural and political issues? How can creativity be used as a vehicle for raising silenced voices and opinions to ultimately mobilise change?\n \nFrom manifestos for action to large-scale depictions of influential figures that ignite change through creativity\, A New Age of Activism will explore various modes\, materials and mediums employed to effectively communicate burning topics expressed by our generation. He’s here\, mainly\, to discuss White\, his first work of non-fiction\, which is being touted as “an incendiary polemic about this young century’s failings\, e-driven and otherwise…a denunciation of censorship\, particularly the self-inflicted sort committed in hopes of being ‘accepted\,’ and a bracing view of a life devoted to authenticity.” Once an enfant terrible\, always an…
