SUMMARY:S.S. Hare and S.S. Adela Comemmoration
DESCRIPTION:All welcome to an afternoon of events to mark the centenary of the loss of two Dublin Port ships. In December of 1917\, two Merchant vessels\, the S.S. Hare and the S.S. Adela were sunk in German torpedo attacks. 36 lives were lost\, an awful tragedy to their families and also having a huge impact on the city and Dublin Docklands community\, where many of the victims lived. \nThis afternoon of commemoration will begin with the unveiling of the separate plaques to each vessel\, close to the original berths of their final voyages. The SS Hare was traveling from Manchester\, while the SS Adela was heading toward Liverpool. The Lord Mayor of Dublin will be present to participate in the ceremony\, along with the family members and representatives from Dublin Port and the local community. There will be a photo and memorabilia exhibition afterwards.

SUMMARY:Dublin Podcast Festival: No Encore
DESCRIPTION:A fun and informal music podcast in which Dave\, Colm and Craig attempt to make sense of the music that finds its way into their ears on a constant basis. With tangents. \nFollowing on from a spectacular sold-out live debut in March\, Ireland’s pre-eminent music podcast NO ENCORE will once again take to the stage at Whelan’s on Thursday September 28. \nThe event takes place as part of the first ever Dublin Podcast Festival\, presented by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions\, and will see hosts Dave Hanratty\, Colm O’Regan and Craig Fitzpatrick recording an episode live from one of the capital’s most storied venues. \nThey won’t be alone\, either\, with three of the country’s most exciting live acts for company – sets from instrumental behemoths Overhead\, The Albatross\, West-coast wunderkind Daithí and electronic luminary Elaine Mai are also part of what’s guaranteed to be another extraordinary night of entertainment. \nIt’s another milestone in an already impressive year\, which has seen the podcast go from strength to strength in their second season. As well as wowing a capacity Workman’s Club crowd to bring up the half-century\, the show has welcomed lively interviewees including Hamilton Leithauser\, Girl Band and Ho99o9 – and continued to further its status as an incisive\, irreverent and unmissable jaunt through the world of music. \nThere will be no holds barred. There will be no apologies. And there will be NO ENCORE LIVE.

SUMMARY:re:publica
DESCRIPTION:re:publica is one of the largest and most exciting conferences about digital culture in the world. Since its foundation in 2007\, it has grown from a cozy blogger meeting with 700 participants into a wide-ranging “society conference”\, with 9.000 visitors at the eleventh edition of re:publica. \nRepresentatives of digital culture share their knowledge and decision-making tools\, and discuss the future of the information society. Here they can mingle with activists\, scientists\, hackers\, entrepreneurs\, NGOs\, journalists\, social media and marketing experts\, and many others. This fosters innovation and creates synergies between net politics\, online marketing\, network technology\, digital society\, and (pop) culture. What is more\, around 46 percent of re:publica speakers arefemale – far more than at many other similar events. \nWe’re counting down the last hours before we open up the doors of the Light House Cinema Dublin and go live with the streaming channels on our website to welcome you all to the second re:publica in Dublin. We’re keeping it short but sweet\, packing everything you need to know ahead of the event here in this newsletter. \nTicket pre-sales for #rpDUB end on 6 September\, at 11:55 pm CET. So make sure to grab one while you can. Not all is lost if you don’t manage to get in before the deadline though\, as there will be a contingent of tickets at the door.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Notes
DESCRIPTION:Kirkos Ensemble and the Experimental Film Society are proud to present Wilderness Notes\, an exciting collaboration bringing together two of Ireland’s most innovative contemporary arts group from the fields of music and film. \nWilderness Notes will feature premieres of 3 new films by EFS filmmakers Rouzbeh Rashidi\, Maximilian Le Cain and Vicky Langan\, and Atoosa Pour Hosseini\, created in tandem with new compositions by young Irish composers Barry O’Halpin\, Sean Ó Dálaigh\, and Robert Coleman which will be performed live by the Kirkos Ensemble. \nThe three films that comprise Wilderness Notes all explore psychic\, territorial and technological margins. Isolated characters\, all somehow locked into masks or fixed personae\, navigate desolate zones between dimensions where a sense of being physically adrift and at risk is mapped onto a corresponding inner state. But they are not only adrift in space\, they are equally adrift in time. Making experimental use of several outdated moving image formats\, notably Super-8 and VHS\, Wilderness Notes summons up ghosts from an abandoned future\, taking its cues from the western\, the nightmare of nuclear holocaust and the masks of ancient theatre. \nAll three of Wilderness Notes’ musical compositions were written to complement EFS’s filmmaking approach. Barry O’Halpin’s is derived from the electromagnetic spectra of 5 chemical elements\, resulting in an ethereal and almost alien set of harmonies and moving parts\, while Sean Ó Dálaigh pits the ensemble against undulating sine waves and introduces an element of choice into structural repetitions to create a vibrant microtonal universe. In contrast\, Kirkos co-director Rob Coleman’s contribution is a song cycle\, setting poetry by American poet Morri Creech for voice\, ensemble and electronics\, examining the states of consciousness that flash beneath the waking mind. \nFor Wilderness Notes the Kirkos Ensemble will be Miriam Kaczor [flute]\, Léonie Bluett [clarinet]\, Máire Carroll [piano]\, Jane Hackett\, Cillian Ó Breacháin [violins]\, Nathan Sherman [viola]\, Yseult Cooper Stockdale [cello]\, Barry O’Halpin [electric guitar] and Sarah Thursfield [voice]. \nTickets here:

SUMMARY:Prohibition – Gatsby’s Mansion
DESCRIPTION:The sensuous ‘Roaring Twenties’ is being toasted by Film Fatale at this Prohibition – Gatsby’s Mansion party at IMMA. “Expect flowing giggle juice\, shimmering dresses\, dapper gents\, dazzling fan dancers and the Film Fatale Follies — the epitome of 1920s glamour — as they blaze the stage.” The perfect compliment to the widely acclaimed summer run of the immersive adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal jazz-age novel in the Gate Theatre. \nMake sure to note this is strictly a 1920s/1930s event — the moll at the door won’t let you in if you ain’t dressed in vintage style\, so put on your vintage glad rags and flaunt your inner Daisy Buchanan or Jay Gatsby\, or come as a gangster or flapper. \n\n\n  \n
