SUMMARY:A Reading of 'Syrian Gulag' By Jaber Baker
DESCRIPTION:Late last year\, an important book found its way into the world\, shining a light on one of the most oppressive prison regimes outside of North Korea. The ever enlightened Gutter Bookshop is hosting a free reading of this incredible tome. \n“An estimated 300\,000 people have been detained or have died in prison since the Syrian uprising broke out. Syrians can be arrested for liking a post on Facebook or for the political activities of a distant relative. They are imprisoned without trial\, and tortured and starved\, often to death. This book is the first to expose the worst prisons in the Middle East\, if not the world. Based on interviews with both the victims and perpetrators\, survivors memoirs and notes\, as well as leaked regime archives\, leaked photos\, and leaked intelligence files\, the book is a testament of the internment and imprisonment system in Syria under the rule of the Assads.” \nA reading of ‘Syrian Gulag’ by Jaber Baker takes place at The Gutter Bookshop\, Cow’s Lane\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 8\, D08 DK27 on Thursday 17th October\,  6.30pm – 7.30pm \ngutterbookshop.com

SUMMARY:Free Books and Roses: Experience a Spanish-style World Book day!
DESCRIPTION:Who doesn’t like a free book? On 25th April\, Instituto Cervantes Dublin invites you to a very special World Book Day celebration with poetry\, music and bookcrossing. Experience a Spanish-style World Book Day exchanging books and roses in the auditorium. \nPerformances will be provided by the trio of artists formed by Andalusian poet Carmen Camacho; Irish poet and translator Keith Payne and Galician singer-songwriter Su Garrido. \nCarmen Camacho live-writes in Seville\, in her own way\, with a number of poetry collections published (Campo de fuerza\, La mujer del tiempo\, 777 and Arrojada) her trajectory has also dived into flash fiction (Vuelo doméstico) and her wittiness has bloomed in the books of aphorisms  Zona Franca (2016) and Minimás. \n \nKeith Payne was the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Award winner for 2015-2016\, he has translated several Galician poetry books into English as well as presented his own poetry collections\, and for this event he has translated Camacho’s work\, so the Irish audience can get close to her universe. \nSinger-songwriter Su Garrido will bring the tunes. With an interesting and eclectic music career\, she will contribute with her delicate art and powerful presence on stage. \n \nWhat is bookcrossing? The exchange could not be simpler: pick a book\, log it on bookcrossing.com and leave it for another reader to find\, read and put it back in circulation. \nWorld Book Day 25th April from 12pm to 1pm. Instituto Cervantes Dublin. Lincoln House. Dublin 2  The event is free but booking in advance is essential!   RSVP: bookings.dublin@cervantes.es or 01 631 15 33/55 \nFor further details see:  https://cultura.cervantes.es/dublin/en/d%C3%ADa-del-libro/124097

SUMMARY:From St Patrick to St Poetrick: Focus on Galician Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Galicia and Ireland share legends\, climate\, music\, culture and even chromosomes\, or so it’s said. This Thursday\, March 14th\, they will also share verses in Focus Galician Poetry. The Instituto Cervantes joins St. Patrick’s Festival to celebrate the patron saint’s day with the reading of poetry in Galician\, Spanish and English. \nConsidered one of the most representative writers in Galician language nowadays and a revolutionary in the region’s contemporary literature\, Manuel Rivas will read poems for his most recently published collection in English The Mouth of the Earth (Shearsman Press\, 2019). Irish poet Lorna Shaughnessy\, the translator of this collection will voice the particular universe of this multi-awarded author. Shaughnessy has published four poetry collections of her own and lectures in Hispanic Studies in NUI\, Galway. \nFor Manuel Rivas\, words are the most sensitive of creatures.  He evokes memory as a source of both nostalgia and future\, and it has been a predominant theme in all his writing. Manuel Rivas has been published in English both in prose (The Carpenter’s Pencil\, Books Burn Badly) and poetry (From Unknown to Unknown\, The Disappearance of Snow). Translated by Lorna (Shearsman Press)\, this last title was shortlisted for the Popescu Prize in European Poetry Translation in 2014. Join us to transform St Patrick into St Poetrick! \nThe poetry collection ‘The Mouth of the Earth’ will be available for sale (€10) and the author will be signing copies after the panel. \nHosted by editor Tony Frazer\, the event is free in but booking in advance is required. bookings.dublin@cervantes.es. \nInstituto Cervantes (Dublin) – Auditorium. Lincoln House\, 6-16 Lincoln Place\, D2. \nFurther details: https://cultura.cervantes.es/dublin/en/foco-poes%C3%ADa-gallega/124100

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Iván Repila + Pascale Baker
DESCRIPTION:Multicultural literary voices come together for In Conversation\, a new series of events at Instituto Cervantes which provides a platform for some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language. \nThe series kicks off this Thursday February 28th with Spanish Writer Iván Repila in conversation with Pascale Baker\, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD\,\n \nFrom a fight for survival to feminism or the role of social media\, Spanish writer Iván Repila’s universe submerges the reader in current and timeless topics to reflect on our society’s concerns with an ability to move as well as raising awareness. Instituto Cervantes have invited him to Dublin to open “In Conversation”\, a new series of events to provide a platform to some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language. \nThe Bilbao writer\, editor and cultural events manager will be in conversation with Pascale Baker\, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD\, whose research goes from banditry in Latin American literature and culture from the 19th century to the present day. \nRepila’s stories pay special attention to social changes and human behavior\, through placing his characters in stirring and complex situations. Translated into eight languages\, his novel The Boy Who Stole Attila’s Horse\, a fable of two brothers trapped in a well\, was described by the late Irish Times literary critic Eileen Battersby as “high art\, an imaginative allegorical work of breathtaking yet restrained lyric power”. Repila’s third novel Prólogo para una guerra (Prologue for a War)\,  presented another fable around social movements\, and in his new novel El aliado (The Ally) he humorously presents a provocative story about feminism and the role that men should play within the movement. \n“In Conversation”\, a new series from Instituto Cervantes is designed to prompt discussion among guests about their more recent works. The series proposes an immersion in the day-to-day of the creation process and the current affairs in Spain and Ireland with the purpose of sieving through the similarities and possible connections and differences. Join in and discover a new way to tell the history we are living today! \nThursday 28th February\, 6pm Instituto Cervantes \nFree. Booking recommended. \n https://cultura.cervantes.es/dublin/en/cambios-sociales-de-hoy-/125082

SUMMARY:Culture Night: Poetry Speed Dating
DESCRIPTION:Are you a poet? Do you want to read your poetry aloud and meet like minded people but find everything about both those concepts overwhelming? Poetry Speed Dating is for all kinds of poets\, whether they’re just starting out or an old hand looking for a casual listener for some new material. The night is designed to combat both the setup of a traditional poetry night as well as the horrible life draining social obligation known as networking. \n \nHow it works: Two chairs\, two poets\, two poems. Ten minutes. You sit opposite someone – maybe a stranger\, maybe an old friend\, maybe your dad who came along out of curiosity – and you read them or show them your poem. Then they show you or read you their poem\, and maybe you guys talk about it. You have 10-15 minutes (we’ll see how it goes) together and then a bell/whistle will sound and one of you will move on to the next table\, to do the same again – different person\, maybe a different poem. \nIf that sounds exhausting you can also just bring poems you like and share them with another person. The idea is to read a poem and escape – you gain a moment of vulnerability with another human and you get to practise reading aloud or having your work read\, then you can move on. \nIt’s a free night and there’s absolutely zero romantic implication\, unless someone falls in love with your beautiful words
