SUMMARY:Ireland Music Week
DESCRIPTION:The Hard Working Class Heroes moniker has been retired in favour of a more straight-up statement of intent. This annual showcase offers the chance to catch a decent snapshot of the scene right now. You’ll catch acts who will fade from view over time\, those who will religiously plough their trade here and those choice few who are destined for bigger stages in years to come. Some big swinging delegates are invited over to cast an eye on proceedings. Some names triggering our interest include April\, Elkae and Maija Sofia. An old school rule of thumb is the earlier the slot\, the more likelihood of discovering the ‘next big thing’. On the conference side\, heavyweights include Geoff Travis from Rough Trade\, Almudena Heredero\, director of Primavera Pro and Dev Sherlock\, music festival programmer with SXSW. \nThe Grand Social\, Lost Lane\, The Button Factory\, Workman’s Club\, Chocolate Factory\, Studio 10 \nTuesday October 1 to Saturday October 5 (conference Tues/Wed/Thurs\, showcase Fri/Sat) \n€12.50/€25/€35 (live shows) – €65/€100 (conference) \nirelandmusicweek.com

SUMMARY:Pantha Du Prince - Conference of Trees
DESCRIPTION:In his latest project\, musician Hendrik Weber aka Pantha Du Prince explores communication between trees. Scientists have increasingly been confirming something that countless stories across cultures have described for millennia: trees can exchange information amongst themselves\, even across long distances. Weber turns this cellular ‘conversation’ into an artistic work that allows a sensual entry into this secretive phenomenon and combines music\, visual poetry and speculative science. An NCH regular\, he last performed there with Norwegian percussion group The Bell Laboratory.

SUMMARY:Stars
DESCRIPTION:“When there is nothing left to burn\, you have to set yourself on fire…” Thus began the third album and career highpoint of Canadian indie pop outfit Stars. The scene there then was truly on fire bringing Arcade Fire\, The Dears\, Feist and Broke Social Scene to global attention in a short space of time. Is it fair to say the strength of that scene has dimmed or do you know any of the 2019 Polaris Prize nominees? Marie Davidson\, Elisapie\, FET.NAT\, Dominique Fils-Aimé\, Haviah Mighty\, Les Louanges\, PUP\, Jessie Reyez\, Shad or Snotty Nose Rez Kids? Anyways\, we digress… It’s 15 years since the release of Set Yourself on Fire. It comes from a time and place well-cherished by music heads. Dominated by the tug and hug of two lead singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan\, the album stands the test of time. Maybe a chance to re-unite with your ex-lover\, unless they’re dead!  \nLate show at 11pm

SUMMARY:This Ain't No Disco Live
DESCRIPTION:‘This Ain’t No Disco Live’ celebrates the launch and raises funds for the highly anticipated second season of the show\, set to be released on New Year’s Day\, 2020. This Ain’t No Disco is a dynamic audio-visual showcase\, representing some of the most talented but under-represented and hard to pigeonhole musical visionaries in Ireland today. Hosted by DJ (and former host of the cult 90’s TV program\, No Disco) Donal Dineen\, This Ain’t No Disco is voluntarily produced by a skeleton crew of friends and music enthusiasts\, directed by music documentarian and award-winning cinematographer Myles O’Reilly. \nAnnouncing the ‘This Ain’t No Disco Live’ event\, Myles commented: \n“After a recent funding rejection\, we made a renewed push to look to our viewers for support via the crowdfunding platform Patreon. The reactions were tremendous and the feelings of love out there for our efforts\, palpable. Not only has it given us great hope\, but we genuinely feel that cutting out the middle person\, and sustaining our efforts solely through the goodwill and generosity of our audiences is an entirely natural and beautiful circumstance\, made possible by the freedom of the internet. \nWith your help\, similar to our first season\, we hope to create four new episodes and release them in Winter\, Spring\, Summer\, and Autumn. A two year hiatus has been just long enough for many new acts to have emerged from Irish soil with new\, unique and exhilarating sounds\, across all genres. We hope to cast a lens on as many as possible\, in locations East\, West\, North\, and South this island. The backbone of each episode will feature Donal bringing together inimitable creative forces to discuss and collaborate in cultivating a sound that’s completely new and entirely true\, to our present day\, to our people and to our culture.”

SUMMARY:Nilüfer Yanya
DESCRIPTION:We can imagine her agents at Primary Talent have been sitting pretty on competing offers for Nilüfer Yanya\, one of the true breakout stars of 2019. Bagging a BBC Sound of 2018 placement has led to affirmations such as opening for Sharon Van Etten on her US tour and performing on Stephen Colbert’s show in July. However\, everything has been cemented by the release of Miss Universe\, her tremendous debut which includes crackers such Baby Blu and Heat Rises. The 22-year-old hails from London but has Turkish\, Irish and Barbadian connections too\, so we’ll be sussing that out further. There’s an intriguing breadth and depth of sounds surrounding her Smokey Sade-esque vocals.

SUMMARY:The Atrix
DESCRIPTION:Legendary Dublin New Wave act\, The Atrix\, release their long awaited anthology\, ‘Dublin 1979-1981’ tonight. \nThe Atrix formed in 1978\, and came out of the same Dublin theatre/cabaret scene as Jim Sheridan\, The Radiators\, Neil Jordan\, Agnes Bernelle\, Peter Sheridan and The Virgin Prunes. The Atrix combined a strong theatrical element to quirky but memorable tunes\, the most striking examples being the singles “The Moon Is Puce” and “Treasure on the Wasteland”. \nThey released its first single “The Moon is Puce” on Seamus O’Neill’s Mulligan label in late 1979 to modest acclaim in its local market. This first single was produced by Philip Chevron\, then a member of The Radiators From Space and later of The Pogues. The band signed to Dave Dee’s DoubleDee Records label in 1980 and released the follow-up single “Treasure on the Wasteland” in 1980. It was produced by Midge Ure. They released ‘Procession’\, their only album in 1981. \nTheir single\, ‘Treasure on the Wasteland’ appeared on the now legendary ‘Just for Kicks’ compilation album\, which also featured\, among others\, Berlin\, DC Nein\, Rocky DeValera & The Gravediggers\, and\, a then virtually unknown\, U2. \nThe bands frontman\, John Borrowman\, tragically passed away in Copenhagen in 1998.

SUMMARY:Caoimhín O Raghallaigh & Thomas Bartlett
DESCRIPTION:O Raghallaigh and Bartlett have combined forces on three Gloaming LPs to date and now strike out on their own with a joint LP. Both come under the title of ‘highly accomplished’ with O Raghallaigh’s fiddle playing on the ten-string hardanger d’amore being a thing of sheer beauty. Bartlett\, meanwhile\, is a pianist who has direct lines to Yoko Ono\, St Vincent\, The National and Sufjan Stevens having worked with them all including producing Stevens’s Carrie and Lowell. This is guaranteed to be truly special.

SUMMARY:Haiku Hands
DESCRIPTION:There’s always room for a debut show in the city by an Australian electro-rave-pop trio\, right? Their biggest hit Not About You heavily echoes The Ting Tings Shut Up and Let Me Go which was released a decade ago. Shudder. Other tracks such as Squat is straight out of a funked-up Notting Hill Carnival float. Spunky beats abound. They are so freshly squeezed\, Haiku Hands merely come armed with a collection of singles tonight.

SUMMARY:Kevin Morby
DESCRIPTION:We don’t know who Paisley Promotions are but we doff our cap to them for bringing Kevin Morby to town for his debut performance. It’s refreshing to know there is faint hope for independent promoters amid the overarching heft of the big two. Morby is touring off the back of the release of Oh My God\, his fifth studio album\, which sees him delving into more spiritual vibes. When asked on Twitter last month if he had a message for anyone who has only just heard his music but is still thinking of coming to see him in London on the occasion of a show\, Morby replied:  \n \nThere might be an additional emoji or two to add to this show as it’s the last date on his European tour.

SUMMARY:Stevie Wonder
DESCRIPTION:Stevie is 69\, has nine children and released 23 studio albums in his career to date. He is a bona fide hitmaker of unimpeachable musical pedigree and\, according to the ads\, we are all invited to this “Song Party” which will be “A Celebration of Life\, Love and Music.” Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing apart from the ticket price then. Still\, to have a lived a life and not seen this Wonder seems to have really only lived a half-life. We do hope he plays his ‘Do’ duo of tracks ‘All I Do’ and ‘Do I Do’ also. \nSong Party setlist June 2019  \nAs If You Read My Mind\nMaster Blaster (Jammin’)\nHigher Ground\nDon’t You Worry ’bout a Thing\nYou Are the Sunshine of My Life\nFor Once in My Life @Cover[Jean DuShon]\nRibbon in the Sky \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT7TqecZ00k \nOverjoyed\nSigned\, Sealed\, Delivered I’m Yours\nSir Duke\nI Wish\nYou Haven’t Done Nothin’\nTea for Two\nGive Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)\nMy Cherie Amour\nLiving for the City\nI Just Called to Say I Love You\nImagine \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vjj6J7gXpY \nSuperstition

SUMMARY:Tame Impala
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been scratching our heads doing the maths on this one. Tame Impala are a mighty fine indie band whose 2015 album Currents deservedly elevated their status. They are on the second row of a relatively weak Glastonbury line-up (along with Liam Gallagher\, Miley Cyrus and George Ezra). The jury is out on the new material we’ve heard so far. But here’s the rub\, tickets for this show are €59.70 which seems somewhat excessive and counter-productive. Let’s say they are looking at a 7000 capacity gig (€417\,900) which is quite a step-up but not beyond the bounds of reason given their popularity. Taking all costs into account that still adds up to a whopper fee for the band (The less I know the better) or an exceptionally greedy agent/promoter (Let it happen).  \nSurely fans going to a show on a Wednesday night by a band who are successful\, though far from legendary\, deserve a better deal in a space this big? \nPhoto credit: Nick Fancher / Stereogum \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpbblMR_jUo

SUMMARY:Stereolab
DESCRIPTION:After a near ten-year hiatus\, Stereolab have begun a string of seven album reissues\, kicking off with 1993’s Transient Random-Noise Bursts and 1994’s Mars Audiac Quintet beefing up the offering with alternate mixes and early demos. They kick off the space pop comeback at Primavera and should embrace some band devotees when they roll into town on the last night of the first leg of their tour. Hint: they might be around for drinks after!

SUMMARY:Jonny Dillon - Songs For A One-String Guitar
DESCRIPTION:We last encountered Jonny ripping it up at the D1 Paddy’s night celebration in Tengu under his electronic ‘Automatic Tasty’ moniker. Now for a more plaintive side of this archivist at the Irish National Folklore Collection. Songs For A One-String Guitar is recorded as a series of sketches over the last ten years. \nWhile informed in large measure by the world of Irish traditional music and song (of Sweeney’s Men\, Planxty and Seán Garvey) along with that of primitivism and the American Spiritual (of John Fahey\, Hank Williams and Mississippi John Hurt) these songs are equally a personal attempt to give expression to an inner landscape\, from the experience of sorrow and loss to the promise of redemption and renewal. \nBello Bar\, Thursday June 13\, €10

SUMMARY:Matmos
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Baltimore\, Matmos formed in San Francisco in the mid 1990s\, and self-released their debut album in 1997. Marrying the conceptual tactics and noisy textures of object-based musique concrete to a rhythmic matrix rooted in electronic pop music\, the two quickly became known for their highly unusual sound sources\, providing the listener with entry points into sometimes densely allusive\, baroque recordings.Since their debut\, Matmos have released over nine albums\, including: Quasi-Objects (1998)\, The West(1998)\, A Chance to Cut Is A Chance to Cure (2001)\, The Civil War (2003) \, The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of A Beast (2006)\, Supreme Balloon (2008) and The Marriage of True Minds (2014). In 2001 they were asked to collaborate with the Icelandic singer Bjork on her Vespertine album\, and subsequently embarked on two world tours as part of her band. In addition to musical collaborations with Antony/Anohni\, So Percussion\, Terry Riley\, The Kronos Quartet\, Matmos have also collaborated with a wide range of artists across disciplines\, from the visual artist Daria Martin (on the soundtrack to her film Minotaur) to Berlin-based choreographer Ayman Harper. From 2011-2013 they were part of the ensemble for the Robert Wilson production The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic\, featuring Marina Abramovic\, Antony and Willem Dafoe. Their 2016 album Ultimate Care II was released in 2016 on Thrill Jockey records and was made entirely out of a washing machine; with Nico Muhly they have created the score for the film How To Talk to Girls At Parties\, directed by John Cameron Mitchell and starring Elle Fanning\, Alex Sharp and Nicole Kidman\, released May 2018.

SUMMARY:Beauty Sleep
DESCRIPTION:The first chords of Beauty Sleep’s new album Be Kind sounds like the dream-pop of Phoenix. SUMMARY:Mariah Carey
DESCRIPTION:At the time of going to print\, there’s was a three ticket deal for Mariah’s Caution World Tour for €49.50 each. At the time of putting this on the internet that deal seems to be over with tickets starting at €68.50 but we can fairly safely assume the ‘sold out’ banner won’t be going up on this  global superstar’s show. It doesn’t help that the Spice Girls are playing Croke Park two nights later and may well have scooped up some of her natural fanbase. Her sassy\, coquettish\, diva qualities remain firmly intact so expect flawless eyelash batting as she delivers tracks from Caution\, her 15th studio album. We’re not sure if we can tempt her into delivering All I Want for Christmas is You in the middle of May but rest assured you’ll get a chance to yelp Hero to your nearest and dearest.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the release of his third solo album The River Holds Its Breath : Tost ar an Abhainn\, The Frames and Kila co-founder and fiddler Mac Con Iomaire collaborates with composer Bill Whelan on the creation of what he calls “a collection of short stories”.
