SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: !!! (Chk Chk Chk)
DESCRIPTION:It’s 15 years since !!! unleashed Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story) and we first became acquainted with their trashy and infectious grooves. And our love affair with these NYC dance-funk meisters remains undimmed over time as !!! have continued to release sublime\, solid\, albums which still factor dance and fun at a premium. Shake the Shudder and Wallop are the most recent testaments to this. The beat\, thankfully\, goes on.\n\nWhelan’s\, Thursday November 21\, €25 \nPhoto: !!! (Chk Chk Chk) Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: TPM
DESCRIPTION:“Two lads on the stage talking about their mickeys. Sure how could you jive to that?” Leitrim detractors aside\, plenty of ‘jiving’ is encouraged as our July cover stars bring their ‘Heaven is a Harp-Pint’ tour to the big smoke. They have clocked up the Applegreens after traversing the country countless times under their TPM guise and trad offshoot\, The Mary Wallopers (who play Totally Dublin Live on Thursday\, November 21 in The Fumbally). Featuring cute raps\, bum wiggles and all the hits such as Curry Sauce\, All the Boys on the Dole and Fuck RTE\, yer again we recommend you Dundalk this way!\nWorkman’s Club\, Tuesday November 19\, €12 \nPhoto: TPM Facebook

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Shura
DESCRIPTION:She may have been dropping tracks such as Touch back in 2016 which too closely mirrored Solange’s Missing You from 2012\, but with Forevher\, queer Manchester synth-disco artist Shura has found certainty in her own voice and style. She’s Shura herself! Religion (u can lay your hands on me) is a swaggering case-in-point. “I wanna consecrate your body/Turn the water to wine/I know you’re thinking about kissing too” is straight outta Fleabag and equally hot and compelling. \n \nAcademy\, Saturday November 16\, €20 \nPhoto: Hollie Fernando

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Tebi Rex
DESCRIPTION:The vaulting ambition and smarts of the current hip-hop scene is further reinforced with Maynooth getting its shout-out via duo Tebi Rex and\, their debut album\, The Young Will Eat the Old. With three spoken word acts by Natalya O’Flaherty and nine tracks swerving through suburbia\, it’s a rollie-smoking delight with the windows down. Not afraid to peer into potential fork-in-the-road moments for their future lives too\, it’s “a hesitant prophecy\,” as they say themselves. With special guests Greg Tisdall\, Ari.Noir and Sia Babez. \n \nLost Lane\, Saturday November 9\, €16.45 \nPhoto: Tebi Rex Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Skipper’s Alley
DESCRIPTION:Skipper’s Alley is a five-piece band born out of the ever-burgeoning Dublin folk music scene\, combining traditional Irish music with contemporary sensibilities to create music that is wild\, gritty\, ancient and still brand new. The Oul Fip is their second album delving into our rich history with re-interpretations of tunes by the likes of Séamus Ennis (The Farmer’s Curst Wife) and Frankie Harte (Madam\, I’m a Darling) whilst unearthing less-known contributors to the trad tapestry John Griffin (Why She Couldn’t Drink Her Tea). There’ll be banjos\, guitars\, tin whistles\, fiddles\, flutes and uileann pipes. This is a double-header with the tremendous four-part-harmony trad gals\, Landless. Bring your best foot tap to the occasion. \n \nPepper Canister Church\, Saturday November 9\, €15

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: A Certain Ratio
DESCRIPTION:A Certain Ratio are a band from the classic crop of Manchester bands\, signed to Factory Records and produced by the legendary Martin Hannett. Now celebrating their 40th anniversary\, they’re heading out on tour\, and to reinforce their manc bona fides their new EP\, a remix EP that includes a rework of Shack Up by Electronic (aka Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner). SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Karol Conka
DESCRIPTION:Karol Conka is someone who certainly has a lot of strings to her bow. The Brazilian is an actress\, a composer\, a television presenter\, a model\, record producer and more. But it’s in her role as a singer and rapper that she’s coming to The Sugar Club in October. Her music blends modern international production and hip-hop touches with a more classically Brazilian pop sound. \n

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Orville Peck
DESCRIPTION:Mr Peck is packing some heat Stateside as a masked gay crooner of country music. Channelling the vocals of Roy Orbison with aesthetic of a graduate show catwalk\, Peck’s debut album Pony would not be misplaced as an updated soundtrack for Brokeback Mountain. It’s somewhat of a new frontier which enhances his chance of standing out from the crowd. For those who wish to be armed with more than just cool cred buttons on their denim shirts tonight\, make sure to reference Lavender Country\, the band credited with creating the first-ever gay country album back in 1973. \nThe Grand Social\, Tuesday October 22\, €16 \nPhoto: Carlos Santolalla

SUMMARY:Chromatics
DESCRIPTION:Chromatics’ long-awaited new album Dear Tommy has almost achieved mythical status at this point. Originally announced way back in 2014\, the first singles came out in 2015\, and then everything disappeared into the ether. Eventually\, the story came out – after a near-death experience\, band mastermind Johnny Jewel destroyed all existing versions of the record\, including thousands of already-printed vinyls and CDs\, and decided to re-record the whole thing. They’ve dropped a new single\, Time Rider\, and cover\, I Want to Be Alone\, this year so here’s hoping the drip-feed is near an end. This marks their first live show here since Forbidden Fruit in 2012. \nOct 22\, Vicar Street \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Bobby Oroza feat. Cold Diamond & Milk
DESCRIPTION:In the past\, producers and writers would often be hidden away in the musical background\, known to the industry but invisible to the audience. Now they’re becoming names in their own right\, and this team-up reflects that. \nBobby Oroza is the artist\, but his collaboration with production duo Cold Diamond & Milk sees them share headline space. \nHe brings the soul talent\, and they produce and refine it into something that hits. \nYou can see it all work at The Sugar Club this evening. \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Gig: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:With their new Bad Boys of Jazz album dropping at the end of November\, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are ramping it up and in town for two shows. First up\, they’ll perform a special Fela Tribute Set in honour of Nigeria and Africa’s greatest artist Fela Kuti which will be preceded by a screening of Music is The Weapon\, the 1982 documentary which Kathleen C Fennessy of the Seattle Weekly perfectly encapsulates saying\, “For the uninitiated\, it’s hard to explain – in mere words – how one man could so successfully mate the sexuality of James Brown with the righteous politics of Bob Marley and sinuous sounds of Miles Davis.” The following weekend\, the Ensemble are back in their spiritual home previewing material from their new album. It’s the best imaginable fun we’ll have with seven brothers (they’re the sons of jazz legend Phil Cohran) in our lifetime. There’s also an early Matinee show on October 28. \nSugar Club\, Saturday October 19 (Fela) & Friday October 25 (Bad Boys)\, €20\, Monday Oct 28 (Matinee)\, Adult + Child €27.50

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: David Berman / Silver Jews Night
DESCRIPTION:David Berman died on August 7 after committing suicide. The musician\, singer\, poet and cartoonist was best known for his work with indie-rock band the Silver Jews which he disbanded a decade ago. Berman had just released his first music since then under the Purple Mountains moniker addressing heartbreak\, grief\, and bitterness. It’s “a truly beautiful album in which the listener will simultaneously relish in Berman’s return whilst feeling an overwhelming wave sorrow for the songwriter’s display of unbridled sincerity\,” said our reviewer Zara Hedderman. Tonight\, paying tribute to a hero of theirs are: Adrian Crowley\, Steve Windings\, Anna Carey and Patrick Freyne\, Maija Sofia\, Skelokrats\, Eileen Gogan\, The Former Soviet Republic\, Dudley Colley and a host more to be announced. \nThe Sound House\, Thursday October 17\, €15 (proceeds to Aware)

SUMMARY:Femmepop Debut Dublin Gig
DESCRIPTION:Femmepop (aka Margaret O’Sullivan) will play her first ever Dublin gig upstairs in Whelan’s on Wednesday 9th of October. She tells us she has been meaning to play the city for a while and is very excited to finally be able to perform live there. \nFemmepop is currently promoting her latest EP entitled ‘London’\, and so far has played Urban Spree Berlin\, Night & Day Café Manchester and Rough Trade Records Nottingham. She is set to play at Lion Coffee Records\, London in November. \nThe ‘London’ EP is a 3 track electronic instrumental soundscape\, inspired by the city of London and marks her most experimental release to date. \nAs she says herself: \n“The ‘London’ EP is a vast departure from the bulk of my previous work. Is it an EP of melodies\, sounds and beats that I needed to get out of my system. I wanted to create a body of work without using my main instrument\, my voice. I realise this is taking a gamble with my listeners but artistically I must do what feels right at the time. I wanted to experiment and branch out\, as I feel I can do so much more than sticking to the one sound or genre. That is why\, since I released my first song\, my sound has always changed.’’ \nWhelan’s Upstairs \nWednesday 9th October\, 8pm \nFacebook event details: https://www.facebook.com/events/2253816528268973/ \nwww.femmepop.com\nwww.soundcloud.com/femmepop\nwww.femmepop.bandcamp.com\nwww.facebook.com/Femmepop \nwww.instagram.com/femmepop \n

SUMMARY:Jesca Hoop
DESCRIPTION:American folk singer-songwriter and Manchester adoptee\, Hoop rolls into town with her latest release Stonechild which looks at the oft-overlooked dark side of motherhood within the folk genre. “The album title came from a spectacle at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia of a lithopedion\, a fossilised fetus that is carried by the mother without her awareness. The fetus is conceived outside the uterus and dies within the mother’s body. The lithopedion I saw had been carried for 30 years and was named Stonechild\,” explained Hoop to Atwood Magazine.

SUMMARY:Ireland Music Week
DESCRIPTION:The Hard Working Class Heroes moniker has been retired in favour of a more straight-up statement of intent. This annual showcase offers the chance to catch a decent snapshot of the scene right now. You’ll catch acts who will fade from view over time\, those who will religiously plough their trade here and those choice few who are destined for bigger stages in years to come. Some big swinging delegates are invited over to cast an eye on proceedings. Some names triggering our interest include April\, Elkae and Maija Sofia. An old school rule of thumb is the earlier the slot\, the more likelihood of discovering the ‘next big thing’. On the conference side\, heavyweights include Geoff Travis from Rough Trade\, Almudena Heredero\, director of Primavera Pro and Dev Sherlock\, music festival programmer with SXSW. \nThe Grand Social\, Lost Lane\, The Button Factory\, Workman’s Club\, Chocolate Factory\, Studio 10 \nTuesday October 1 to Saturday October 5 (conference Tues/Wed/Thurs\, showcase Fri/Sat) \n€12.50/€25/€35 (live shows) – €65/€100 (conference) \nirelandmusicweek.com

SUMMARY:Pantha Du Prince - Conference of Trees
DESCRIPTION:In his latest project\, musician Hendrik Weber aka Pantha Du Prince explores communication between trees. Scientists have increasingly been confirming something that countless stories across cultures have described for millennia: trees can exchange information amongst themselves\, even across long distances. Weber turns this cellular ‘conversation’ into an artistic work that allows a sensual entry into this secretive phenomenon and combines music\, visual poetry and speculative science. An NCH regular\, he last performed there with Norwegian percussion group The Bell Laboratory.

SUMMARY:Stars
DESCRIPTION:“When there is nothing left to burn\, you have to set yourself on fire…” Thus began the third album and career highpoint of Canadian indie pop outfit Stars. The scene there then was truly on fire bringing Arcade Fire\, The Dears\, Feist and Broke Social Scene to global attention in a short space of time. Is it fair to say the strength of that scene has dimmed or do you know any of the 2019 Polaris Prize nominees? Marie Davidson\, Elisapie\, FET.NAT\, Dominique Fils-Aimé\, Haviah Mighty\, Les Louanges\, PUP\, Jessie Reyez\, Shad or Snotty Nose Rez Kids? Anyways\, we digress… It’s 15 years since the release of Set Yourself on Fire. It comes from a time and place well-cherished by music heads. Dominated by the tug and hug of two lead singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan\, the album stands the test of time. Maybe a chance to re-unite with your ex-lover\, unless they’re dead!  \nLate show at 11pm

SUMMARY:This Ain't No Disco Live
DESCRIPTION:‘This Ain’t No Disco Live’ celebrates the launch and raises funds for the highly anticipated second season of the show\, set to be released on New Year’s Day\, 2020. This Ain’t No Disco is a dynamic audio-visual showcase\, representing some of the most talented but under-represented and hard to pigeonhole musical visionaries in Ireland today. Hosted by DJ (and former host of the cult 90’s TV program\, No Disco) Donal Dineen\, This Ain’t No Disco is voluntarily produced by a skeleton crew of friends and music enthusiasts\, directed by music documentarian and award-winning cinematographer Myles O’Reilly. \nAnnouncing the ‘This Ain’t No Disco Live’ event\, Myles commented: \n“After a recent funding rejection\, we made a renewed push to look to our viewers for support via the crowdfunding platform Patreon. The reactions were tremendous and the feelings of love out there for our efforts\, palpable. Not only has it given us great hope\, but we genuinely feel that cutting out the middle person\, and sustaining our efforts solely through the goodwill and generosity of our audiences is an entirely natural and beautiful circumstance\, made possible by the freedom of the internet. \nWith your help\, similar to our first season\, we hope to create four new episodes and release them in Winter\, Spring\, Summer\, and Autumn. A two year hiatus has been just long enough for many new acts to have emerged from Irish soil with new\, unique and exhilarating sounds\, across all genres. We hope to cast a lens on as many as possible\, in locations East\, West\, North\, and South this island. The backbone of each episode will feature Donal bringing together inimitable creative forces to discuss and collaborate in cultivating a sound that’s completely new and entirely true\, to our present day\, to our people and to our culture.”

SUMMARY:Nilüfer Yanya
DESCRIPTION:We can imagine her agents at Primary Talent have been sitting pretty on competing offers for Nilüfer Yanya\, one of the true breakout stars of 2019. Bagging a BBC Sound of 2018 placement has led to affirmations such as opening for Sharon Van Etten on her US tour and performing on Stephen Colbert’s show in July. However\, everything has been cemented by the release of Miss Universe\, her tremendous debut which includes crackers such Baby Blu and Heat Rises. The 22-year-old hails from London but has Turkish\, Irish and Barbadian connections too\, so we’ll be sussing that out further. There’s an intriguing breadth and depth of sounds surrounding her Smokey Sade-esque vocals.

SUMMARY:The Atrix
DESCRIPTION:Legendary Dublin New Wave act\, The Atrix\, release their long awaited anthology\, ‘Dublin 1979-1981’ tonight. \nThe Atrix formed in 1978\, and came out of the same Dublin theatre/cabaret scene as Jim Sheridan\, The Radiators\, Neil Jordan\, Agnes Bernelle\, Peter Sheridan and The Virgin Prunes. The Atrix combined a strong theatrical element to quirky but memorable tunes\, the most striking examples being the singles “The Moon Is Puce” and “Treasure on the Wasteland”. \nThey released its first single “The Moon is Puce” on Seamus O’Neill’s Mulligan label in late 1979 to modest acclaim in its local market. This first single was produced by Philip Chevron\, then a member of The Radiators From Space and later of The Pogues. The band signed to Dave Dee’s DoubleDee Records label in 1980 and released the follow-up single “Treasure on the Wasteland” in 1980. It was produced by Midge Ure. They released ‘Procession’\, their only album in 1981. \nTheir single\, ‘Treasure on the Wasteland’ appeared on the now legendary ‘Just for Kicks’ compilation album\, which also featured\, among others\, Berlin\, DC Nein\, Rocky DeValera & The Gravediggers\, and\, a then virtually unknown\, U2. \nThe bands frontman\, John Borrowman\, tragically passed away in Copenhagen in 1998.
