SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Rock Against Homelessness in aid of Focus Ireland
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, the housing crisis has reached a new low\, with nearly 11\,000 people living homeless in Ireland\, 4\,000 of them being children. In response to this crisis\, Rock Against Homeless has been announced in The Olympia on the 3rd of March\, with Fontaines D.C. leading an assemblage of  Ireland’s best acts. An amazing night with proceeds going to an amazing cause. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Temples
DESCRIPTION:Temples bring their electro tinged psychedelic rock to The Button Factory on March 2nd. The Noel Gallagher-approved group are supporting their third album ‘Hot Motion’\, which sees them returning to a more immediate sound after the electroncially orchestrated ‘Volcano.’ With dreamy songs that covertly deliver excellent pop hooks\, Temples are an enticing live proposition.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: I Am Diana De Brito
DESCRIPTION:I Am Diana De Brito (IAMDDB) is a Mancunian straight out of Gilles Peterson’s record box. The Mancunian rapper and singer brings a jazz-infused swagger to bear on her urban beats. She dropped a new\, three-track EP\, Kare Package just before Christmas and enlisted Toddla T to produce her new single Famous. It’s no surprise that she calls to mind Jill Scott’s soulful vibes and supported Lauryn Hill on her comeback tours. “Ain’t no pressure with the world – they want diamonds\, I want pearls\,” she sings on Sit Back. And who are we to argue. \n  \nAcademy Green Room\, Friday February 28\, €20 (+14s show)

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Andreas Varady Trio
DESCRIPTION:DublinJazz.ie kicks off their International Jazz Series with a show by the Andreas Varady Trio in Lost Lane on February 20th. Born of Hungarian Gypsy descent in a small Slovakian town\, Varady started learning guitar at the humble age of 4. Moving to Ireland in 2007\, it wasn’t long before Cork and Limerick natives saw a 9 year old Varady busking on the streets. At the age of 13\, he became the youngest headlining artist at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London\, and since then has played with Martin Taylor\, Tommy Emmanuel and Louis Stewart among others. \nThis week\, The Andreas Varady Trio come to Lost Lane with two albums under their belt and some of the finest jazz to come out of the country in the decade.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: IDER
DESCRIPTION:Fast-rising British pop duo IDER have spent a lot of time touring this year\, following the release of their debut album Emotional Education. Emotional Education is a record full of warm\, bright pop songs\, and it’s certainly put them on the map\, but you’d bet that 2020 will bring even more for the duo. Including a show at the Sound House in February. \n \nFeb 11\, The Sound House \nPhoto: Lottie Turner

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Bombay Bicycle Club
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2009\, Bombay Bicycle Club exploded onto the scene with the kind of energetic yet melancholy indie rock that made all the NME boys and girls hearts soar. In the years since\, they’ve done everything from an acoustic album to more maximalist efforts that take inspiration from Indian and Turkish music. \nNow back with their new album ‘Everything Else Has Gone Wrong’ after a three year hiatus\, Bombay Bicycle Club seem intent on taking back their crown. Lead single ‘Eat\, Sleep\, Wake (Nothing but You)’ is the kind of exceedingly earnest toe tapper that the band made their name with over a decade ago and now due to popular demand\, a second Vicar Street date has been added to their Irish Tour. Get your tickets and feel like an alienated loverlorn teen all over again.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Beak>
DESCRIPTION:Beak> is an English electronic music band\, consisting of Geoff Barrow (of Portishead)\, Billy Fuller (Robert Plant) and Will Young (Moon Gangs). From doom to krautrock\, noise to poignant soundtrack and most recently embracing dance on their latest EP\, Life Goes On\, Beak> is freedom without constraint. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Isobel Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Belle & Sebastian founder member Isobel Campbell returns with her fifth solo album\, There Is No Other. The record will be her first solo effort since 2006’s Milkwhite Sheets\, and first album of any kind since her most recent Mark Lanegan collaboration\, Hawk\, in 2010. It wasn’t meant to be this way with the album recorded five years ago but held in a rights/legal limbo after the closure of her former label. “It felt like I’d retired\,” she says. “Or I was in prison. To be told I could not release the record completely broke me and I started questioning everything\, feeling very reluctant and shying away from everything. But if you’re lucky to live long enough\, there are always going to be peaks and troughs.” Time to welcome her back with open arms and loving ears. \nLiberty Hall\, Saturday February 1\, €22 \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Dan Deacon
DESCRIPTION:There was a time when Dan Deacon was in our lives almost as much as The National or John Grant. The love affair was mutual and we fondly remember him and his human tunnels in Andrew’s Lane (2009) and splitting up the field on the Friday evening of Body and Soul (2015). But then he kind of disappeared. Or rather he went off and scored some soundtracks for cycling doc Time Trial and Rat Film which explored Baltimore’s complicated history (as told through the city’s rat infestation). Well he’s back with a new album Mystic Familiar (Domino) bringing more kaleidoscopic\, synth-pop joy into our lives. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: 070 Shake
DESCRIPTION:In terms of acclaim from her peers\, 070 Shake’s credentials are impeccable – she’s been the musical guest of choice for artists including Kanye West. But she’s far more than a sidekick to famous friends – over the past couple of years she’s been breaking out and building out her own audience\, and her powerful electro-pop spiked with influences from rap\, hip-hop and more makes her one of the most compelling new artists around. A debut album\, Modus Vivendi\, is on the way (officially it’s “coming soon”)\, and you can catch her live at The Button Factory. \n \n070 Shake\, The Button Factory\, Jan 19 \nPhoto: Press

DESCRIPTION:GoldenPlec see out the last few days of 2019 (and the decade\, by the way) with their annual Block Party Jam bash at the Sugar Club. DESCRIPTION:No\, it’s not an Elvis hologram night\, at his most fluorescent aqua\, but rather a Canadian electronic pop duo whose latest release Open Reduction Internal Fixation spans “trance\, acoustic\, UK garage\, trip-hop and house”. DESCRIPTION:Clairo’s musical journey is one deeply embedded in the ultra-new musical climate. She rose to prominence after her song Pretty Girl\, recorded on a laptop in her bedroom\, surged through Instragram and TikTok\, and eventually looped back around through being a monster hit on YouTube. But that’s timeless about her work is the quality – debut album Immunity came out this year\, and its subtle\, mature dream-pop showcases a song-writing talent that’s grown remarkably over the last few years. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Gruff Rhys
DESCRIPTION:Gruffudd Maredudd Bowen Rhys is the Cool Cymru counterpart to Damon Albarn\, never content with resting on his considerable past successes. Of course\, it’s no surprise that Gruff popped up for a stellar turn on Johannesburg from Albarn’s Africa Express project this summer. Pang! is his latest release mostly sung in Welsh and hailed by the Guardian as “a chamber folk-rock minor masterpiece”. It’s global in its outlook through\, produced by the South African electronica artist Muzi with some lyrics sung in Zulu. It’s unlikely to be a converter but for those who religiously congregate in the chapel of Rhys\, the sermon is as ecstatically pleasing as always.\nWhelan’s\, Tuesday December 9\, €25 \nPhoto: Gruff Rhys Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Björk
DESCRIPTION:One thing you can always be assured of is a Björk show won’t be found scrimping on spectacle or boundary-pushing technology. Her first indoor appearance in the capital in 22 years is part of her co-Cornucopia tour which promises phantasmagoric digital theatre built around Utopia\, her most recent release. With Arca as music co-producer\, stage direction by Lucrecia Martel\, digital visuals by Tobias Gemmier and headpieces by co-creative director James Merry (see Hemlines)\, this promises to be an exquisite sensory feast by one of the most idiosyncratic artists of our time. Just don’t come looking for the ‘hits’ from Björk – but in true form\, you’ll actually find them\, courtesy of Hamrahlid\, the 50-piece on-stage youth choir who are also the support act. \n \n3 Arena\, Thursday November 28\, €49.50 \nPhoto: Santiago Felipe/Getty Images

DESCRIPTION:It’s 15 years since !!! unleashed Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story) and we first became acquainted with their trashy and infectious grooves. And our love affair with these NYC dance-funk meisters remains undimmed over time as !!! have continued to release sublime\, solid\, albums which still factor dance and fun at a premium. DESCRIPTION:“Two lads on the stage talking about their mickeys. Sure how could you jive to that?” Leitrim detractors aside\, plenty of ‘jiving’ is encouraged as our July cover stars bring their ‘Heaven is a Harp-Pint’ tour to the big smoke. They have clocked up the Applegreens after traversing the country countless times under their TPM guise and trad offshoot\, The Mary Wallopers (who play Totally Dublin Live on Thursday\, November 21 in The Fumbally). DESCRIPTION:She may have been dropping tracks such as Touch back in 2016 which too closely mirrored Solange’s Missing You from 2012\, but with Forevher\, queer Manchester synth-disco artist Shura has found certainty in her own voice and style. She’s Shura herself! Religion (u can lay your hands on me) is a swaggering case-in-point. “I wanna consecrate your body/Turn the water to wine/I know you’re thinking about kissing too” is straight outta Fleabag and equally hot and compelling. \n \nAcademy\, Saturday November 16\, €20 \nPhoto: Hollie Fernando

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Tebi Rex
DESCRIPTION:The vaulting ambition and smarts of the current hip-hop scene is further reinforced with Maynooth getting its shout-out via duo Tebi Rex and\, their debut album\, The Young Will Eat the Old. With three spoken word acts by Natalya O’Flaherty and nine tracks swerving through suburbia\, it’s a rollie-smoking delight with the windows down. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Skipper’s Alley
DESCRIPTION:Skipper’s Alley is a five-piece band born out of the ever-burgeoning Dublin folk music scene\, combining traditional Irish music with contemporary sensibilities to create music that is wild\, gritty\, ancient and still brand new. The Oul Fip is their second album delving into our rich history with re-interpretations of tunes by the likes of Séamus Ennis (The Farmer’s Curst Wife) and Frankie Harte (Madam\, I’m a Darling) whilst unearthing less-known contributors to the trad tapestry John Griffin (Why She Couldn’t Drink Her Tea). There’ll be banjos\, guitars\, tin whistles\, fiddles\, flutes and uileann pipes. This is a double-header with the tremendous four-part-harmony trad gals\, Landless. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Karol Conka
DESCRIPTION:Karol Conka is someone who certainly has a lot of strings to her bow. The Brazilian is an actress\, a composer\, a television presenter\, a model\, record producer and more. But it’s in her role as a singer and rapper that she’s coming to The Sugar Club in October. Her music blends modern international production and hip-hop touches with a more classically Brazilian pop sound. \n

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Orville Peck
DESCRIPTION:Mr Peck is packing some heat Stateside as a masked gay crooner of country music. Channelling the vocals of Roy Orbison with aesthetic of a graduate show catwalk\, Peck’s debut album Pony would not be misplaced as an updated soundtrack for Brokeback Mountain. It’s somewhat of a new frontier which enhances his chance of standing out from the crowd. For those who wish to be armed with more than just cool cred buttons on their denim shirts tonight\, make sure to reference Lavender Country\, the band credited with creating the first-ever gay country album back in 1973. \nThe Grand Social\, Tuesday October 22\, €16 \nPhoto: Carlos Santolalla

SUMMARY:Chromatics
DESCRIPTION:Chromatics’ long-awaited new album Dear Tommy has almost achieved mythical status at this point. Originally announced way back in 2014\, the first singles came out in 2015\, and then everything disappeared into the ether. Eventually\, the story came out – after a near-death experience\, band mastermind Johnny Jewel destroyed all existing versions of the record\, including thousands of already-printed vinyls and CDs\, and decided to re-record the whole thing. They’ve dropped a new single\, Time Rider\, and cover\, I Want to Be Alone\, this year so here’s hoping the drip-feed is near an end. This marks their first live show here since Forbidden Fruit in 2012. \nOct 22\, Vicar Street \nPhoto: Press
