SUMMARY:Hak Baker
DESCRIPTION:Stories and social commentary from the streets the Hak Baker hook. It comes as little surprise that he collaborated with Mike ‘The Streets’ Skinner on a track as they both filter life through their own sharp takes. His Bricks and Mor-Tour sees the self-described Grime-folk artist bring his Babylon LP and Misled EP in tow for yet another show which was originally on the cards for March 15\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Warpaint
DESCRIPTION:Warpaint are back with a new studio album this month. And the first slices\, especially Champion\, from Radiate Like This point to promising things from their dreamy shoegazer indie pop with an edge. The LA four-piece\, who will 20 years in existence next year\, remain perpetually plugged in\, even in the six years since Heads Up. DIY Mag informs us that\, “Drummer Stella Mozgawa has racked up a slew of session credits with The xx\, Sharon Van Etten\, Tracey Thorn and more; bassist-singer Jenny Lee Lindberg has worked with Deap Vally and appeared on Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher\, while singer-guitarist Emily Kokal has collaborated with Saul Williams and started a family. As for Theresa (Wayman)\, well\, she’s put out a solo album (2018’s LoveLaws)\, launched an underwear line\, and been confirmed to star in the forthcoming film adaptation of Kenneth J. Harvey’s novel\, Inside.” So\, if you do end up chatting to them after the gig just don’t question what they’ve been up to!

SUMMARY:Squid
DESCRIPTION:Purveyors of post-punk and Brightonites to boot\, Squid may sound like a band who has been around forever\, but they are mere early hurdlers with their debut album Bright Green Field in their arsenal since 2021. Their two-night stint illustrates growing clout and their blend of sci-fi paranoia on a rinse cycle with our contemporary lot seems like the perfect reason to let rip. SUMMARY:John Francis Flynn
DESCRIPTION:“Flynn’s arresting debut shines for its ingenuity and unfettered invention as droning tape manipulations\, gurgling analogue synth passages and jazz squeals shine in conversation with traditional songs\, arrangements and approaches. For all the instrumental mastery on display\, Flynn’s rich vocals stand apart\, the deeply felt empathy in his delivery lending the songs their own kind of gentle authority. Mesmerising.” Thus wrote Danny Wilson from this parish when Francis Flynn released his debut I Would Not Live Always last year. Repeat listens calcify his take.  \nVicar Street\, Sunday May 1\, €22.50

SUMMARY:I Could Be Anything I Want: An Evening Celebrating SOPHIE
DESCRIPTION:SOPHIE blazed briefly\, but ever so brightly. The pioneering transgender Scottish avant-pop record producer\, singer\, and DJ became known for her ‘radical futurism’ best exemplified in her debut album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Tragically\, SOPHIE died in Athens last year. A short 20 minute documentary on SOPHIE’s legacy will be followed by a panel discussion before Roo Honeychild\, darkmavis and Wastefellow assume DJ duties. \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Lebanon Hanover
DESCRIPTION:We either have you at the line “a British-German dark wave duo formed in 2010” or we’ve lost you. For those on sentence two\, stick with! Lebanon Hanover are damn good. If you listen to a track like Alien\, you’ll hear guitar riffs which will fire up The Cure/Depeche Mode synapses. And voices which call to mind Anika and Marc Almond. Ellen Allien has been remixing them too\, of late. This is a band for Cold War spies\, shady laneways and snowflakes which crystallise. Come in from the cold and embrace them. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Grouper
DESCRIPTION:Shade is the 12th full-length album by Liz Harris aka Grouper. Shuttling between thickets of distortion and pared-back folk\, maintaining the essential mystique which forms part of her appeal over the years. Abstract and haunting\, with the promising glow of loving intimacy\, prepare to delve into her back catalogue before encountering the Grouper groupies on your night out.

SUMMARY:Curtis Harding
DESCRIPTION:Nothing like a bit of soul for the soul and\, if that’s your bag then\, Harding is your man. The Atlanta-based artist croons with tremulous ardour on his third solo effort If Words Were Flowers. Like Leon Bridges\, Harding pickles the past and nods to the present. The title is a tribute of sorts to a phrase that his mother told him when he was a child – ”Give me my flowers while I’m still here.” You’ll hear echoes of everyone from Sly Stone to Curtis Mayfield to Gil Scott-Heron. “Music immortalizes you\,” says Harding\, “So if this is the last thing I’m going to say to someone\, it’s going to be some hopeful shit.”

SUMMARY:Christine Tobin and Friends - Tower of Song
DESCRIPTION:Renowned for her kaleidoscopic musical palette\, she can be a junkyard blues philosopher\, snappy beat seductress\, a conduit for exquisite zen-like harmonies or reflective Americana. Dublin native Christine has been an integral part of both the New York City and London scenes for many years\, has recently returned to Ireland and now resides in Roscommon. \nHer authentic sound was described by The Guardian as “Tobin’s 24 carat voice” while praising her both for the poetry of her compositions and the warmth of her golden voice. Her style\, although rooted in jazz\, is eclectic and draws on a broad range of influences. MOJO Music Magazine said of her “Christine Tobin really transcends glib genre-fication. Her expressive range acknowledges finely acquired folk\, jazz and 20th-century classical influences\, which already sets her apart. And everything is shot through with an unmistakable refinement\, free-spirited earthiness and giddy romanticism\, this singer-songwriter is in a field of one.” \nThe Christine Tobin and friends ensemble comprises; \nChristine Tobin – vocals\nPhil Robson – guitar\nConor Murray – bass\nDavid Lyttle – drums \nphoto: Des McMahon

SUMMARY:Self Esteem
DESCRIPTION:The long-awaited return of gigs\, attendant with sweaty mingling and queues for the bar\, is finally upon us. And there’s lots to be buzzed about. Homegrown talents such as Gemma Dunleavy and For Those I Love\, who exploded in popularity over lockdown\, play sold out hometown shows. Meanwhile\, we get to welcome international acts again too. Rebecca Lucy Taylor\, aka Self Esteem\, is one of those acts who has been thrilling in advance of her sophomore album Prioritise Pleasure which has just dropped\, with Taylor promising\, “13 songs of cleansing myself of the guilt and fear of being a woman who is ‘too much’ and replacing that very notion with a celebration of myself\, of you\, of being a human and the way that isn’t always easy or perfect\, and that’s ok.”

SUMMARY:Meljoann
DESCRIPTION:There’s a refreshing\, singular vision to Meljoann’s approach to music. Her sophomore album HR is joyfully jagged – an ass scrunch to late capitalism. She channels Janet Jackson on glitchy pop singles such as O Supervisor whilst Trophy Wife has a cinematic expansiveness to it. Her accompanying videos are an inventive delight also. While Meljoann still sashays under the radar\, one hopes due recognition is on the way\, for she has easily delivered one of the best Irish albums of ’21. She is worthy of bigger stages too\, festival bookers take note! \nThe Grand Social\, Saturday November 6\, €12.50 \nsupport from  ÓDÚ  and rising Dublin artist S.E.M.I.

SUMMARY:Brad Mehldau Trio
DESCRIPTION:Grammy Award winning jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau’s most consistent output over the years has taken place in the trio format. Mehldau’s musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser\, and greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly\, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music\, and it informs everything he plays. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other\, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s\, with his trio and as a solo pianist. His performances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process of abstraction that may take place on a given tune\, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a stripped down\, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over the years\, one that has grown to expect a singular\, intense experience in his performance. \n \nLarry Grenadier (Bass)  As one of the most admired\, accomplished bassists working in jazz today\, Larry Grenadier has been praised as “a deeply intuitive” musician by The New York Times and as an instrumentalist with a “fluid sense of melody” by Bass Player Magazine. Grenadier has created an expansive body of work in collaboration with many of the genre’s most inventive\, influential musicians – from early days playing with sax icons Joe Henderson and Stan Getz to what has been decades performing alongside pianist Brad Mehldau. Jeff Ballard (Drums\, Percussion)  At the age of 25\, Ballard began an educational journey no college could match. He went on the road for eight months annually from 1988 to 1990 with Ray Charles\, backing one of music’s biggest stars.  In 1990\, Ballard moved to New York and jumped into the transformative scene that was developing there at the time. He began collaborating with Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Brad Mehldau\, Mark Turner\, Joshua Redman\, and Ben Allison\, among others who were mixing jazz tradition with their own influences\, ranging from Middle Eastern rhythms to electronica and modern hip hop. His present work continues with the Brad Mehldau Trio\, as co-leader of collective group FLY (featuring Mark Turner\, Ballard\, and Larry Grenadier) and with his own groups The Jeff Ballard Trio and Jeff Ballard Fairgrounds.

He has released four solo albums to date\, has toured internationally\, and renowned artists such as José Gonzales and Moderat have asked him for reworks of their tracks. She has continued working on her music in the last year and her first release is slated for mid 2021.\n\n\n\n\nNavá is a Dublin-based quartet exploring the musical cultures of Ireland and Persia. SUMMARY:Swing Into Summer: Sunday Jazz Gala Fundraiser for Phil Ware
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday sees a fantastic lineup of top-notch musicians come together virtually in aid of an important cause that’s very dear to our hearts. \nPhil Ware is one of the Irish jazz’s most celebrated musicians. In June 2020\,  the much-respected pianist and teacher\, suffered a rare form of stroke\, which left him unable to speak or to move the right side of his body. A group of his closest friends established The Phil Ware Trust for public donation to help Phil’s recovery and to support his needs into the future. \nAs part of their efforts they have put together a cracking Sunday Jazz Gala Fundraiser programme in a fitting tribute to an inspirational musician and educator.  Over the course of the day an array of outstanding musicians\, including special guest iconic jazz and blues wonderwoman\, Mary Coughlan will help create a perfect jazz soundtrack for your Sunday. There will also be opportunities to hear some stories from renowned members of the jazz world about Phil and his work throughout the day. \nPresented by host and jazz aficionado DJ Billy Ó hAnluain\, the lineup features contributions from rising singer-songwriter Jennifer McMahon\, vocal and instrumental-style improvisation from Dublin trio Berri\, and Sigur Rós influenced quartet ÄTSCH\, lead by guitarist Matthias Winkler. Romanian vocalist Aleka explores jazz standards from her debut album ‘Person I Knew’ in her unique style\, interspersing eastern rhythms\, as well as inspirations from Debussy\, Bartok and other classical composers. \nPoetry-lovers will enjoy the sweet voice and literary-inspired work of Emilie Conway\, while bi-lingual vocalist and composer Ríona Sally Hartman melds lush vocal harmonies\, acoustic softness and surrealist stories into her melodic songs. \nPhil Ware has contributed so much to the Irish music world as a pianist and educator before his illness\, and the organisers really hope to raise a good amount to support his long-term recovery towards independent living. \nSo why not tune in to the online stream\, sip on a cool drink and enjoy some new fresh sounds and old jazz favourites. \nAll monies donated to this benefit concert\, will go exclusively to cover costs associated with Phil’s medical care and ongoing rehabilitation. \nSunday 11th July\, 3pm-8pm | online via www.thefundforphil.com | Tickets €10-€30 \nTickets: https://www.thefundforphil.com/events/swing-into-summer.html \nDonate to the Fund for Phil at: https://ie.gofundme.com/f/the-fund-for-phil

SUMMARY:Katie Kim & Radie Peat
DESCRIPTION:Islander\, as part of their Quiet Lights festival online series\, are delighted to present an exclusive audio-visual streaming event with two of Ireland’s finest creative minds\, Radie Peat & Katie Kim\, coming together for a rare and powerful collaboration for Nollaig na mBan. \nKatie Kim and Radie Peat of Lankum have joined forces with drummer/singer Eleanor Myler (Percolator)\, sonic wizard John Spud Murphy (producer of RTÉ Choice Music Prize award winning album The Livelong Day by Lankum)\, and the renowned sound artist/filmmaker Vicky Langan occupying the visual field\, this promises to be a unique collision of concepts for this one off performance. \nIn March\, Peat was on an extensive tour of the US with Lankum\, where Kim had relocated in 2019 and more recently opened for the band at their sold out Mercury Lounge show in NY. This turned out to be one of the last live gigs either would play in 2020. After surrendering a return to Ireland\, the two found themselves by chance living 500 meters apart with an abundance of time on their hands and a hunger to create. This collaborative project is the result of that time. \n\nComprising new arrangements of original material\, folk songs\, and reimagined contemporary songs\, this performance brings together elements of gothic folk\, ethereal doom\, the melding of intricate harmonies and combined raw vocal power. \nThis exclusive performance will go out as a live stream on Nollaig na mBan on Wednesday 6th January 2021 at 8pm GMT and viewers will be available to stream the performance for a limited 48 hours. \nInterview with The Last Mixedtape here. \nMake Me an Island podcast conversation between Donal Dineen and Radie Peat here. \n

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: I Am Diana De Brito
DESCRIPTION:I Am Diana De Brito (IAMDDB) is a Mancunian straight out of Gilles Peterson’s record box. The Mancunian rapper and singer brings a jazz-infused swagger to bear on her urban beats. She dropped a new\, three-track EP\, Kare Package just before Christmas and enlisted Toddla T to produce her new single Famous. It’s no surprise that she calls to mind Jill Scott’s soulful vibes and supported Lauryn Hill on her comeback tours. “Ain’t no pressure with the world – they want diamonds\, I want pearls\,” she sings on Sit Back. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Andreas Varady Trio
DESCRIPTION:DublinJazz.ie kicks off their International Jazz Series with a show by the Andreas Varady Trio in Lost Lane on February 20th. Born of Hungarian Gypsy descent in a small Slovakian town\, Varady started learning guitar at the humble age of 4. Moving to Ireland in 2007\, it wasn’t long before Cork and Limerick natives saw a 9 year old Varady busking on the streets. At the age of 13\, he became the youngest headlining artist at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London\, and since then has played with Martin Taylor\, Tommy Emmanuel and Louis Stewart among others. \nThis week\, The Andreas Varady Trio come to Lost Lane with two albums under their belt and some of the finest jazz to come out of the country in the decade.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Bombay Bicycle Club
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2009\, Bombay Bicycle Club exploded onto the scene with the kind of energetic yet melancholy indie rock that made all the NME boys and girls hearts soar. In the years since\, they’ve done everything from an acoustic album to more maximalist efforts that take inspiration from Indian and Turkish music. \nNow back with their new album ‘Everything Else Has Gone Wrong’ after a three year hiatus\, Bombay Bicycle Club seem intent on taking back their crown. Lead single ‘Eat\, Sleep\, Wake (Nothing but You)’ is the kind of exceedingly earnest toe tapper that the band made their name with over a decade ago and now due to popular demand\, a second Vicar Street date has been added to their Irish Tour. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Isobel Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Belle & Sebastian founder member Isobel Campbell returns with her fifth solo album\, There Is No Other. The record will be her first solo effort since 2006’s Milkwhite Sheets\, and first album of any kind since her most recent Mark Lanegan collaboration\, Hawk\, in 2010. It wasn’t meant to be this way with the album recorded five years ago but held in a rights/legal limbo after the closure of her former label. “It felt like I’d retired\,” she says. “Or I was in prison. To be told I could not release the record completely broke me and I started questioning everything\, feeling very reluctant and shying away from everything. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Dan Deacon
DESCRIPTION:There was a time when Dan Deacon was in our lives almost as much as The National or John Grant. The love affair was mutual and we fondly remember him and his human tunnels in Andrew’s Lane (2009) and splitting up the field on the Friday evening of Body and Soul (2015). But then he kind of disappeared. Or rather he went off and scored some soundtracks for cycling doc Time Trial and Rat Film which explored Baltimore’s complicated history (as told through the city’s rat infestation). Well he’s back with a new album Mystic Familiar (Domino) bringing more kaleidoscopic\, synth-pop joy into our lives. DESCRIPTION:In terms of acclaim from her peers\, 070 Shake’s credentials are impeccable – she’s been the musical guest of choice for artists including Kanye West. But she’s far more than a sidekick to famous friends – over the past couple of years she’s been breaking out and building out her own audience\, and her powerful electro-pop spiked with influences from rap\, hip-hop and more makes her one of the most compelling new artists around.
