SUMMARY:Nova Twins
DESCRIPTION:Nu-metal-punk crossover duo Nova Twins earned some crossover cred with their 2022 Mercury Prize nomination which recognised the genre-mashing edge evident on their sophomore release Super Nova. Having supported the likes of Wolf Alice\, Skunk Anansie and Enter Shikari\, they bring the attitude and energy of resistance. Sample sing it back lyrics include\, “I’m a samurai\, samurai\, samurai\, dancer | Warrior\, warrior\, warrior\, fighter | Ahh\, I’m a boss bitch | Ahh\, I’m Cleopatra” from Cleopatra. Flex it.

SUMMARY:Young Fathers
DESCRIPTION:It’ll be an upper circle neck crane and glimpse if you haven’t sorted your tickets to Young Fathers. Actually there can be fewer worse places to watch a gig so we’d suggest sorting it out proper next time. If you’re part of the Standing or Circle brigade then you’re in for a treat as the Scottish trio bring their brand new album Heavy Heavy to town. Fusing industrial bass with rap\, gospel choruses and blistering drums\, their trajectory remains on an upward curve. \nOlympia\, Wednesday March 1.

SUMMARY:Weyes Blood
DESCRIPTION:Channeling the likes of Karen Carpenter and Aimee Mann\, Weyes Blood (Natalie Mering) has been steadily building a fanbase which last saw her here in the Button Factory in 2019. \nPandemic road bump aside\, Mering released the second of her trilogy of albums this year\, And in the Darkness\, Hearts Aglow. There’s a nod to 1970s Laurel Canyon folk-pop in her melodies as she grapples with personal and societal issues of our times. Valentine’s comes two days early in ’23. \n Vicar Street\, Sunday February 12

SUMMARY:Carly Rae Jepsen
DESCRIPTION:If you miss or missed your Olympia pop mo with Tove Lo this autumn\, then chalk Carly Rae down for your reunion/comeback. Call Me Maybe might be a decade old but still ranks as one of the sassiest bubblegum three minute pop songs ever laid down and has led to more than a few hand gestures and sashays at the party. \nCarly released The Loneliest Time\, her sixth studio album this autumn. While the likes of Dua Lipa have eclipsed her in star power\, it’s a solid outing addressing issues such as missing family (Western Wind) and dating app world (Beach House). Conflicting emotions for any twenty-something student living at home. \nOlympia\, Saturday February 5.

SUMMARY:Byron Wallen’s Gayan Gamelan Ensemble performing Boards of Canada
DESCRIPTION:Almost 25 years later Music has the Right to Children remains one of the most sublime debuts of all time. Eerie\, meditative and layered; it was and remains a benchmark in electronica taking the concept of childhood and splicing it through a textured prism of sound. Now take a jazz trumpeter\, his eight-piece gamelan ensemble and open it up to interpretation. Bringing a range of percussive instruments such as xylophones\, gongs\, bells\, trumpet\, synthesisers\, bass guitar\, drums and conches (shell trumpets); this is a live experience and not simply playback of the opus. Special guests on the night are our own Glasshouse playing Aphex Twin.  \nNational Concert Hall\, Sunday January 29\, €29.50 \nhttps://soundcloud.com/user-964333615/byron-wallen-bocuma \nhttps://soundcloud.com/user-964333615/byron-wallen-grompol-mataram-boc

SUMMARY:Past The End
DESCRIPTION:The Fumbally Cafe is the place to be on December 16th\, where a stunning lineup get together for Past The End\, a musical fundraiser for Women’s Aid. The organisers tell us that the name is a nod to The End is Nigh\, an epic night in 2012\, when singer Lisa Hannigan and others played to a sweet Christmas gang to mark the end of the Mayan Calendar and of all existence. (Editor’s note –  some of us are still here.) \nPerformers on the night include Brian Mooney’s band The Next New Low\, featuring Sean Coleman\, Daniel Luke Smith\, and James Smith. There will also be a trio performance with Mary Barnecutt\, Sean Mac Erlaine and Mathew Nolan\, while singer songwriter Laura Ann Brady will be conjuring up sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul.  Expect to see a few surprise guests dropping by too. \nObviously the aim is to raise as much as possible for a great cause. See you there! \nTickets are €15 plus booking fees and VAT. All proceeds from the night will go to Women’s Aid.\n \n*Note: The Bar will be open\, but food will not be available. \n  \nAbout The Performers… \n \nThe Next New Low \nEverything is nearly always falling apart when the next new low play\, but somehow the well- crafted songs save us and we all leave with a comfortable glow. Featuring Brian Mooney\, Sean Coleman\, Daniel Luke Smith\, and James Smith. \n  \nMary Barnecutt\, Matthew Nolan\, & Seán Mac Erlaine \nSeán Mac Erlaine is a composer\, musician and mastering engineer. Recognised as one of Ireland’s most forward-thinking creative musicians\, he has worked with many leading lights of music today. Seán’s work is genre agnostic and readily intersects folk\, free improvisation\, jazz and traditional music. \nMatthew Nolan is a Dublin based musician\, composer\, academic and curator. Since 2015\, he has produced new work in collaboration with some of the finest musicians around\, both Irish and international. He has worked on commissions from a range of prestigious performing arts institutions\, including: National Gallery\, BAM and the Film Society at Lincoln Centre in New York\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Bram Stoker Festival and the St Patrick’s Festival. \nMary Barnecutt is a Dublin-based musician\, educator and curator who works with a variety of artists\, bands\, orchestras and educational projects. She has written music for short films\, theatre\, dance productions\, and has worked with artists such as\, Julie Feeney\, Nell Regan\, Justine Doswell\, Amanda Coogan\, Adrian Crowley\, Liz Roche\, Seti the 1st\, Ray Harman and Ruth O’Mahony Brady. \n  \nLaura Ann Brady \nLaura Ann Brady is an alternative folk artist and drama therapist from Dublin. She experiments with folk and Irish traditional songs in her work and this informs her own process of song writing. Laura plays various instruments including autoharp and piano and enjoys the ritual of layering vocals and sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul.

SUMMARY:Confidence Man
DESCRIPTION:Their Vicar Street sold out show earlier in the summer was hailed as one of the best of the year and now the Aussie power popsters are back to blast some heat into the winter chills. Their ‘dance like you just don’t care’ attitude is infectious. Having released Tilt\, their sophomore release\, earlier in the year in the vein of a mash-up of dance classics such as the sublime Holiday. The room will bounce. The weekend starts here. SUMMARY:Deirdre Murphy - Matriotism Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Hot off the back of a breathtaking appearance at last weekend’s Electric Picnic\, singer and multi-disciplinary artist Deirdre Murphy takes to the stage at the Cobblestone this Saturday September 10th to launch her new album\, Matriotism. \nThe name of the album is inspired by the concept of devotion to the motherland; to the earth\, with some of the dark tones on the album reflecting the dark turn of health which the planet is currently undergoing. Other songs reinforce the paradox that\, even in the midst of collapse\, beauty and wonder are all around us. \n \nThe Alaskan native’s songs have been compared to Ali Farka Toure in their sparingness\, combining a peaceful dream like quality with a sharper edge of darkness and sometimes menace\, infused with lyrical influences referencing Leonard Cohen and The White Stripes. \nDeirdre will be joined by a host of musicians including Denis McAuliffe\, Claire Fitch\, Jason McNamara\, Lily Sheehan\, Becky Reilly\, Rita Garland and Kiruu for what promises to be a very special evening of music and performance. \nThe Cobblestones Backroom \nSaturday September 10th 8pm \nTickets via eventbrite \ndeirdremurphy.net

SUMMARY:Remi Wolf
DESCRIPTION:“Chaotic\, colour-free\, funky\, stinky explosion pop” is how Remi Wolf describes her sound. The 26-year-old Californian delivered it all in her debut Juno and drops by after a summer which had her opening for the Chili Peppers and Lorde and playing Lollapalooza in Stockholm. “For Juno\, I was listening to a lot of Beck and Santana and Michelle Branch and the Japanese Breakfast album that dropped last year. Now\, I’m listening to a lot of Mac DeMarco\, The Flaming Lips and Third Eye Blind\,” said Wolf in Cultured Mag last month. Embrace her hook-filled and hyper-saturated upbeat vibes.

SUMMARY:M. Ward
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, it’s 14 years M.Ward released Post-War with its achingly beautiful opener Poison Cup. That was the one which flipped the switch here but his 2020 releases Migration Stories actually marks his tenth album release. Drawing on personal narratives and liminal places\, Ward is the journeyman of his stories\, whether dueting alongside Zooey Deschanel as She & Him\, to studio work with Jenny Lewis\, to teaming up with Conor Oberst. “I love playing the alchemist who gets to combine elements that shouldn’t go together\, but every once in a while they do and it’s magic.” he says. He also recently released Think of Spring\, an album of Billie Holiday covers. \nphoto credit: Renata Steiner

SUMMARY:Mannequin Pussy
DESCRIPTION:Make way for a debut Dublin show by this Philadelphian punk and indie rock outfit. With two albums Romantic and Patience along with recent EP Perfect\, expect gloriously trashing sounds\, jagged riffs and high voltage energy. There might even be a mosh mo on tracks like Perfect and Pigs and Pigs. Anger can still be an energy. Support comes from North Dublin art-punk posse Girlfriend. \n \n

SUMMARY:Diana Ross
DESCRIPTION:Fresh from stints at the Platinum Jubilee and the Sunday Legends slot at Glasto\, Ross rolls into town with her Thank U Tour. Like a number of acts such as Elton John\, Paul McCartney and now Ross\, this is the end of their live era. A Motown titan who started back in the ‘60s with the Supremes\, hitting a solo run in the ‘70s before her Chic-enabled reinvention during disco’s heyday in the early ‘80s before\, erm\, tapering off if you discount the little flurry of Chain Reaction. Thank You\, her 25th studio album and first in 15 years\, brings in Jack Antonoff on production duties and has been mostly met with a shrug of gratitude. One is expecting this live show to be a smooth celebration of an icon\, ably assisted by a strong backing band and singers\, allowing the 78-year-old to draw breath on occasion and say ‘Thank U’ to us.

SUMMARY:Michael Kiwanuka + Gabriels
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in between the actual heap of big gigs on comes this true diamond and a support you really need to catch. Kiwanuka is a soul brother who is finally getting to tour his Mercury prize-winning and Grammy nominated album. A lush\, immersive album of politicised soul\, it examined themes of faith\, self-doubt and civil rights with samples from the late civil rights leader and activist John Lewis. The Londoner of Ugandan origin will be bringing lush orchestrations and band crescendos in tow. And do not miss his support in the form of Gabriels who released two spell-blindingly brilliant EPs last year in the shape of Love and Hate in a Different Time and Bloodline. This bears all the hallmarks of a wonderful double-bill. Time is a healer. \nphoto: Suki Dhanda for Observer New Review \n \n  \n  \n \nTrinity College\, Monday June 27\, €54.85

SUMMARY:Tirzah
DESCRIPTION:Her debut Devotion was called “the sound of contemporary contemplation: morning-after party rhythms\, hazy melodies\, hands-on instruments and the private space between them.” And her follow-up Colourgrade\, “a subconscious snapshot” which explores recovery\, gratitude and new beginnings. Tirzah is all about quiet being the new loud pairing offbeat R&B melodies with unpolished production enabling space for honesty and emotional interiority.

SUMMARY:Warpaint
DESCRIPTION:Warpaint are back with a new studio album this month. And the first slices\, especially Champion\, from Radiate Like This point to promising things from their dreamy shoegazer indie pop with an edge. The LA four-piece\, who will 20 years in existence next year\, remain perpetually plugged in\, even in the six years since Heads Up. DIY Mag informs us that\, “Drummer Stella Mozgawa has racked up a slew of session credits with The xx\, Sharon Van Etten\, Tracey Thorn and more; bassist-singer Jenny Lee Lindberg has worked with Deap Vally and appeared on Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher\, while singer-guitarist Emily Kokal has collaborated with Saul Williams and started a family. As for Theresa (Wayman)\, well\, she’s put out a solo album (2018’s LoveLaws)\, launched an underwear line\, and been confirmed to star in the forthcoming film adaptation of Kenneth J. Harvey’s novel\, Inside.” So\, if you do end up chatting to them after the gig just don’t question what they’ve been up to!

SUMMARY:Squid
DESCRIPTION:Purveyors of post-punk and Brightonites to boot\, Squid may sound like a band who has been around forever\, but they are mere early hurdlers with their debut album Bright Green Field in their arsenal since 2021. Their two-night stint illustrates growing clout and their blend of sci-fi paranoia on a rinse cycle with our contemporary lot seems like the perfect reason to let rip. SUMMARY:John Francis Flynn
DESCRIPTION:“Flynn’s arresting debut shines for its ingenuity and unfettered invention as droning tape manipulations\, gurgling analogue synth passages and jazz squeals shine in conversation with traditional songs\, arrangements and approaches. For all the instrumental mastery on display\, Flynn’s rich vocals stand apart\, the deeply felt empathy in his delivery lending the songs their own kind of gentle authority. Mesmerising.” Thus wrote Danny Wilson from this parish when Francis Flynn released his debut I Would Not Live Always last year. SUMMARY:I Could Be Anything I Want: An Evening Celebrating SOPHIE
DESCRIPTION:SOPHIE blazed briefly\, but ever so brightly. The pioneering transgender Scottish avant-pop record producer\, singer\, and DJ became known for her ‘radical futurism’ best exemplified in her debut album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Tragically\, SOPHIE died in Athens last year. SUMMARY:Lebanon Hanover
DESCRIPTION:We either have you at the line “a British-German dark wave duo formed in 2010” or we’ve lost you. For those on sentence two\, stick with! Lebanon Hanover are damn good. If you listen to a track like Alien\, you’ll hear guitar riffs which will fire up The Cure/Depeche Mode synapses. And voices which call to mind Anika and Marc Almond. SUMMARY:Curtis Harding
DESCRIPTION:Nothing like a bit of soul for the soul and\, if that’s your bag then\, Harding is your man. The Atlanta-based artist croons with tremulous ardour on his third solo effort If Words Were Flowers. Like Leon Bridges\, Harding pickles the past and nods to the present. The title is a tribute of sorts to a phrase that his mother told him when he was a child – ”Give me my flowers while I’m still here.” You’ll hear echoes of everyone from Sly Stone to Curtis Mayfield to Gil Scott-Heron. “Music immortalizes you\,” says Harding\, “So if this is the last thing I’m going to say to someone\, it’s going to be some hopeful shit.”
