SUMMARY:The Depot Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Times have changed. When I was pacing nervously up and down the backstage area of venues such as The Rock Garden and The New Inn in the 90s’\, stage time was usually 10pm with curfew at 11.30pm. These days if you arrive at 9.30 at a venue there’s a good chance the headliners are midway through their set. It’s hardly rock n roll so it’s good to see that one of our favourite venues is bucking the trend for their self curated Depot Sessions with live music programmed up until midnight. Proper gig time! Spread over two nights\, the sessions are a nicely curated 3 band line up per night with some red hot contenders in the mix. SexyTadhg\, Fizzy Orange and WineMom perform on Thursday while Really Good Time\, Squarehead and Cruel Sister are Friday’s bill of fare. All acts bring something fresh to the table and are well worth checking out. \nTickets are only a tenner and are available online from thecomplex.ie \nThe Depot Sessions take place at The Complex\, Smithfield from 8.30pm – 12am on Thursday June 6th & Friday June 7th.\n \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh

SUMMARY:Lavery - ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch
DESCRIPTION:One of the most exciting prospects in Jazz and Soul in Ireland and the moment\, this Dublin based octet imbues their funky neo soul with an authenticity and musicianship that many of their contemporaries\, quite simply\, lack. The second show in Dublin in a busy month of May\, the night also marks the release of their excellent\, excellent new EP\, ‘Jade Garden’. Boasting an absolute powerhouse of a voice in Annalise Furkin\, who fronts a lineup featuring Havana Roots/Yankari saxman Richard Ng and TBL8 Brass Band trombone player Martin Farrelly. Every performance I’ve seen of the group has been a fire breathing showcase of sublime artistry married with technical mastery.  Not to be missed\, especially if you’re the type to tell people\, “I was there.” – Adhamh O Caoimh \nLavery – ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch takes place Upstairs in Whelan’s on Saturday May 25th

SUMMARY:Sophie Coyle Launches Second Album
DESCRIPTION:The talented Irish folksinger\, songwriter and illustrator\, Sophie Coyle\, releases her highly anticipated second album\, Cuentista\, this coming Friday\, April 12th. Evoking the ambiance of a late-night tango bar\, Coyle’s new album promises listeners an enchanting\, immersive musical voyage through South America\, encapsulating her own experiences\, and tales from her travels. The new album builds on Coyle’s previous album\, Blame Me for the Storm\, which was long listed for Album of the Year at the Folk Awards. \nThe Dundalk based musician tells us that the album first came together in the early days of the pandemic\, “We began recording in Black Mountain Studios at the start of the pandemic\, and we welcomed another two kids into our lives along the way\, making it an epic journey. Now\, as we prepare to release the album\, I couldn’t be happier. I feel that both the lyric writing and production have evolved significantly since the first album\, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.” \nThere’s an opportunity to do just that at what promises to be a great evening out as Sophie plays live in Dublin’s Bello Bar this Friday\, with special guests SELK and Gar Cox. \nTickets are available here. \n \nThe album can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp \nsophiecoyle.bandcamp.com \n \n

SUMMARY:CABL / Nerves/ Affection to Rent
DESCRIPTION:This truly stacked bill sees shoegaze skewed rock quartet CABL and fuzzy pioneers Nerves co headline the Grand Social for a dizzyingly abstract evening of joyful noise. CABL’s ‘See You In A Year and a Half ’ and the imminent ‘Glórach’ EP from Nerves are early contenders for our favorite releases of the year\, and this evening\, with Dublin’s Affection to Rent kicking off proceedings is sure to be one of the shows we’re still talking about at the end of 2024. – Adhamh Ó Caoimh

SUMMARY:Sign Crushes Motorist
DESCRIPTION:Sign Crushes Motorist is a slowcore-influenced project of Northern Irish artist Liam McCay\, who is 18 years-old. Yes\, you read that right. Liam has two albums out to date – 2022’s I’ll Be Ok and 2023’s – Hurting. Inspired by the work of U.S. outfit Duster\, McCay’s warm\, lo-fi sound has found acclaim via TikTok trends like “corecore” or “nichetok”. This is his first headline show – make some appropriately muffled noise\, please.

SUMMARY:The Secret Singers
DESCRIPTION:The Secret Singers journey through space and time. From the wild and windswept refuges of old Ireland to the turbulent golden dunes of North Africa\, The Secret Singers share their places\, their voices and their worldviews – through song. \nSinging tunes of traditional Ireland alongside world classics and pop\, our selection captures the rich musical influences and background of each singer. \nAwaken to the searing contemporary sounds of Farah Elle. Move to the up-beat catchy soul of Asha Ari. Bathe in the sonorous vocal depths of Caitlin Donovan. Surrender to the uncompromising truth of Tríona Sings. \nAnd when all that is done \nAnd when time and place is gone \nAnd when you hear us sing \nMagic just might happen…together\n \nmain image: Ecardo Baader

SUMMARY:Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This mob are one of the most intense\, full-on\, rub you up the right/wrong way live acts around. Punk poetry parlando\, with driving rhythms and industrial dirt. Art rock\, but not arty (OK\, maybe a bit)\, they like their Iggy & the Stooges\, their Velvet Underground\, Leonard Cohen\, Sonic Youth\, Patti\, PJ\, Neu!\, you name it. \nThey’re a mongrel bunch\, for sure. Guitarist Dan does dirty as well as drones. Johnny switches from sci-fi keyboards to rotten noise guitar\, pedal boards everywhere. The rhythm section is an octopus: Paul and Harvey and the Gangnus sisters Rebecca and Jasmin. Jas also played loads of violin on the last record. \nThe troupe are fronted by writer and spoken-word mouth almighty Peter Murphy\, author of the novels John the Revelator and Shall We Gather at the River (Faber). In September 2021 the band embarked on a German mini-tour\, playing Wuppertal and Berlin as part of the travelling Here/There exhibition\, supported by Culture Ireland. They followed this with a sold-out show in Wexford Opera House with guests Basciville and poet Stephen James Smith\, plus a collaborative EP\, Tell It to A Tree. \n \nCursed Murphy Versus the Resistance released their second album\, Republic of the Weird\, in November 2022. A more divergent piece of work\, using electronics and folk overtones and string arrangements\, it sounded future-shocked and rather beautiful in parts\, in the same way a volcanic eruption or an oil spill is beautiful. It produced a slew of singles: ‘Hold That Line’\, ‘Republic of the Weird’\, and ‘This Is Not Your Love Song’\, the latter an industrial-disco banger somewhere between Leonard and Trent Reznor\, co-written and co-produced with Basciville. \nBefore we let you go\, you’ll be needing to hear what some nice folk wrote about them. Hot Press dubbed them “avant-garde adventurers from Wexford”\, which made them sound fierce cool altogether\, and voted Republic of the Weird the spoken word album of 2022 (even though it’s not really a spoken word album\, but never look a gift horse etc…). Among their peers\, their most vocal admirers include Undertone Paul McLoone\, Cathy from Pillow Queens\, the lads from Sons of Southern Ulster\, novelist Donal Ryan and one-time Cramps bass-player and general alt. legend Fur Dixon. See below for a brag wall’s worth of quotes.

SUMMARY:Gig for Gaza
DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian horrors which are unfolding in Palestine are beyond harrowing. Besides the calls for an immediate ceasefire\, the war being waged has not just elicited sympathy and condemnation but also spurred on artists to come together to aid a shattered people. There are countless fundraisers on the go but the Gig for Gaza is the big one. Lankum\, Damien Dempsey\, Lisa O’Neill and The Mary Wallopers will all take to the stage for a concert with all net proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians. A poster for the gig designed by Selkies and screen-printed by Damn Fine Print will be available from Bang Bang in Phibsborough and at the gig itself\, priced at €30. This will be the first of a number of gigs and events around Ireland under the ‘Irish Artists for Palestine’ Group that will take place from November 28 to December 3 with full listings available on irishartistsforpalestine.com. Bit of a shame that Ticketmaster didn’t waive or donate fees on this.

SUMMARY:Yves Tumor
DESCRIPTION:“And the reason I think we’re a good match is because you’re disagreeable and I’m disagreeable and we’re both incredibly othered and you don’t seem to have much of an interest in being fucking warm\, fuzzy\, and user-friendly…You’re already leaning into the fucking othered. You’re occupying spaces that – I’ve been there as a woman – are traditionally held by a certain type of person that isn’t us.” This extract is from Courtney Love’s fangirl interview with Yves for Interview this spring\, one of two he has done in the last five years. The reviews for his latest release Praise a Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume have been fulsome with praise – “seeking the mysterious nexus where Loveless meets Purple Rain” (Pitchfork)\, “a deranged beckoning into a free space” (NPR). Tumor also revealed his love for a genre called extratone\, “it’s basically techno\, but the bpm is sped up to a thousand. It sounds like a humming sound.” \n \n

SUMMARY:Johnny Jewel
DESCRIPTION:You might have seen Drive\, caught the Chromatics at Forbidden Fruit or Vicar Street\, watched the Twin Peaks reboot\, listened to a remix of The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights or simply know Italians Do It Better (the record label). If you have\, you’ve been in the presence of Johnny Jewel and his Midas touch. In many ways his evocative urban synth pop sound came to define the post Drive era spilling into the likes of Stranger Things and beyond. His latest single The Witch is from the soundtrack to forthcoming horror film Holly and straight out of the John Carpenter playbook. “I never have to motivate myself to work\,” Jewel told the Guardian before debuting this show at Christine and the Queens Meltdown festival this summer. “I never get tired of it. It’s therapy\, it’s meditation\, it’s trance\, it’s inner space\, it’s the greatest feeling. The possibilities are infinite and it’s impossible to be satiated.”

SUMMARY:Hilary Woods
DESCRIPTION:“A fugue comprised of nine slow hypnotic dirges” is how Acts of Light\, Woods’ forthcoming album on Sacred Bones is described by her people. Woods continues her sonic excavations spanning field recordings in Spain\, strings in Oslo and the Palestrina choir in the Pro Cathedral. Where The Bough Has Broken\, the first single off the album\, is cunningly envisioned through RTÉ newsreel archives. “This video muses on the beauty of community and resilience\, made to a piece of music that celebrates connection and the specificity and transience of time\, space\, and human expression. This music video is a visual love letter to the Dublin City I grew up in\, to the spirit of familial roots and the extraordinary moments in ordinary life that leave their lasting impression\,” says Woods. She will be accompanied on these shows by pioneering and visionary drummer and percussionist Gabriel Ferrandini. \n

SUMMARY:Hania Rani
DESCRIPTION:Hania Rani is an award-winning Polish pianist\, composer and musician who has collaborated with Ólafur Arnalds\, Vikingur Olafsson\, Portico Quartet and Christian Löffler\, to name but a few. She returns to Ireland in October 2023 for her biggest ever headline concert at Dublin’s iconic Vicar Street\, as part of a major tour in support of recently released third studio album. \nThe album\, entitled Ghosts is released this month via Gondwana Records\, features high-profile collaborations from the like of Ólafur Arnalds\, Duncan Bellamy (Portico Quartet) and Patrick Watson. \nHer debut album Esja\, a beguiling collection of solo piano pieces on Gondwana Records was released to international acclaim in 2019\, with her sophomore album\, the expansive\, cinematic\, Home following in 2020. Home was mastered by Zino Mikorey in Berlin (known for his work on albums by artists such as Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds). For her work on these records\, Hania won four prestigious Fryderyk Awards (Poland’s answer to the Grammys). \nIn January 2021\, Hania signed her publishing rights to Wise Music Group\, where her music is represented next to names like Dustin O’Halloran\, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Ludovico Einaudi. This year\, Hania was asked by director Susanna Fanzun to score the documentary On Giacometti about the artist Alberto Giacometti. Released by Gondwana Records\, the soundtrack was recorded in the Swiss mountains with Hania being surrounded by snow and ice which is reflected in the delicate recordings. \n \n  \n \nPhoto: Hania Rani Press

SUMMARY:John Grant Sings The Songs of Patsy Cline
DESCRIPTION:An adopted son of these shores\, Grant is a constant presence in our midst whether he is acing a duet with CMAT in Where Are Your Kids Tonight or dropping by to play the Cline songbook. “Cline has stood the test of time\, and her music has influenced millions of people. She lived through a lot of heartache and you can really feel that in her songs – a really beautiful mixture of melancholy\, sweetness and strength\,” says Grant. \nWhile Walkin’ After Midnight\, I Fall to Pieces and Sweet Dreams (Of You) are her best known hits\, Grant selects If I Could Only Stay Asleep\, There He Goes and Leavin’ on Your Mind as some lesser known personal favourites. A literal handful of tickets are left for this moment of joy. \nNational Concert Hall\, Tuesday September 26.

SUMMARY:Kelela
DESCRIPTION:In some respects\, it beggars belief that Kelela Mizanekristos is not playing a larger venue or that this show isn’t sold out at the time of going to press. But them’s the ups and downs of a competitive gig and acclaim space. It’s also an “an act of self-care” which saw this Queer artist retreat from the glare for a period of introspection. Ten years since the release of her debut mixtape Cut 4 Me and six since her astounding debut LP Take Me Apart. Now she returns with Raven\, an album of material which further cements her status as a voyager into thrilling terrains of electronic\, drum’n’bass and garage. It’s never too late to jump on board. \n \nAcademy\, Wednesday August 16\, €29.50

SUMMARY:East Forest and Peter Broderick
DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, Broderick has played with with Nils Frahm\, M Ward and Efterklang before forging his own solo career. Yet\, the draw of collaboration is always gently calling and in this instance he has recorded Burren with East Forest\, a multi-genre Portlandian artist. Recorded over a week in the aforementioned Burren this work is fertile\, fragile and sensitive to its surroundings. There’s an intermingling and interdependency of sounds and harmonies which feel naturally at home with each other. For fans of The Gloaming. \n \nLiberty Hall\, Saturday August 12\, €28.50

SUMMARY:James Yorkston & Nina Persson
DESCRIPTION:Now here’s a winning combo… Yorkston is a journeyman musician who has been doing his thing with consistently understated aplomb since 2001. Persson is\, perhaps\, best known for being part of The Cardigans\, a 1990s Swedish rock band who had a brace of chart hits. She’s pursued solo projects since then too under her own name and A Camp. Yorkston has reunited with the Second Hand Orchestra with whom he recorded The Wide\, Wide River to bring us The Great White Sea Eagle. DESCRIPTION:Flourishes of indie\, electronic\, rock\, gospel\, folk\, pop and more besides abound on Drew Makes Noise‘s debut LP. SUMMARY:Hayley Blais
DESCRIPTION:Passing through en route to the Great Escape comes Blais from Vancouver. Her debut LP Below the Salt dropped in 2020 so it’s fair to say she’s playing catch up with her fanbase. (Damn Pan!). There’s lots of reasons to gush about her and her upbeat/sad indie pop musings. DESCRIPTION:It’s the way he pants\, right? Whether it’s on Terrace Martin’s new single ‘Chucks’ or his own audio cruise controller ‘Topdown’\, he gets all Barry White under your bonnet when he does. There’s much more to Channel Tres besides and everything about his resurgent house beats signal him being on the cusp of a Kaytranadaesque breakthrough ever since his sublime EP released in 2018. \nHe’s collaborated with Tove Lo ‘Attention Whore’ and Robyn and SG Lewis on ‘Impact’ as well as had the likes of Tyler the Creator endorse him remixing EARFQUAKE and Jpegmafia turning up on his ‘Black Moses’ track.
