SUMMARY:Dark Blue ANOHNI Sings Lou Reed
DESCRIPTION:This will be special. Two generational voices come together as Anohni takes on Reed’s classic catalogue and transgressive lyrics in her own inimitable style. ANOHNI’s relationship with Lou Reed stretches back over two decades. In 2003\, she was a supporting vocalist on the Animal Serenade tour and performed on a number of tracks on Reed’s Edgar Allan Poe inspired album The Raven. In 2006/2007 she sang backing vocals for Reed’s first full performance of Berlin in New York and Sydney. In addition\, Reed contributed vocals and guitar to ‘Fistful of Love’ from I Am a Bird Now. Across her 30-year career ANOHNI has forged a singular path through popular music\, mirroring Reed’s beguiling musical journey in so many ways.     \n \nNational Concert Hall\, Tues. 26th November 8pm   \nnch.ie

SUMMARY:SACK
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the release of  ‘Wake Up\, People!’ the acclaimed new record from Dublin alternative rock outfit\, Sack\, this headline performance is the largest show to date since the band’s resurrection out of the Pandemic. The new album proved the five piece had not lost a step in the interim\, their tuneful and hook-laden songs invested with a new maturity\, and a wry energy. It has been almost a year since this writer has seen them perform\, but it is one of the shows I am looking forward to the most in a very busy calendar. The Pixies fronted by Sinatra indeed\, with the songwriting ingenuity of Neil Hannon to boot. \nTickets: singularartists.com \nSACK play The Button Factory\, Curved St\, Temple Bar\, Dublin on Saturday November 23rd \n

SUMMARY:Bicurious
DESCRIPTION:Dublin/Leipzig rock duo Bicurious recently ran an incredibly successful crowdfunding campaign to release their sophomore record\, alongside a slew of celebratory tour dates. \nThe pair\, famed for their frenzied live performances\, mountainous riffs\, Mariana deep grooves and oceanic psychedelia\, are amongst Ireland’s most unique propositions at this juncture. \nTheir hook laden sonic adventures have a tangible joy about them\, and not since Adebisi Shank have I been so compelled and elated to dance. I would urge readers to seek out their brilliant 2021 debut\, ‘(re)constructed’\, which to this day\, years since its release\, has remained a mainstay in my weekly rotation. \nAlongside the excellent news about their campaign\, the band also announced a UK and Irish winter tour\, with Belfast and Cork dates\, alongside a sure to be sold out show at Dublin’s Grand Social on the 21st of November. It is\, without question\, one of this humble writer’s most anticipated releases\, and without doubt\, should be one of yours as well. \nTickets available here. \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh \n@bicuriousbandofficial \nbicuriousbandofficial.com

SUMMARY:La Tène
DESCRIPTION:Another incredible booking from Ireland finest promotor\, Enthusiastic Eunuch has summoned eclectic music ensemble La Tène to bless us with their spectral tones\, creating a sound between drone\, folk\, experimental and occitan music. Long\, hypnotic\, wordless pieces are built from traditional instrumentation\, wild percussion and blurred\, subtle electronic embellishments\, and feel as ancient and earthy as those millennia-old artefacts. \n \nDeeply recommended. \nPlease Note Change of Venue From Bello Bar to Lost Lane\, with earlier start time of 7.30pm. SUMMARY:Mabe Fratti & Special Guests
DESCRIPTION:Mabe Fratti and her group put on one of the most incredible performances I had the honour of witnessing in 2023. Those frenzied pioneers at Foggy Notions have once again facilitated an evening for the Guatemalan cello wǔnderkind to deliver an absolutely spellbinding meditation\, echoing her work with Belafonte Sensacional and Claire Rousay\, and the experie-metal supergroup she spearheads\, Amor Muere. At times recalling the heady peaks post-rock overlords Godspeed You! Black Emperor\, which is no easy mission for a trio\, the performance made me a lifelong fan. I hope to see ye at this one. \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh \nMabe Fratti is at Whelans\, Wexford St\, Dublin 2\, at 8pm on Tuesday 29th October \nwhelanslive.com

SUMMARY:Wider Than Pictures
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a series of gigs with a star-studded line-up\, right in the heart of Dublin? Singular Artists have got you covered. \nWider Than Pictures is fast becoming a summer highlight in Dublin. Taking place in one of the most easily accessible and aesthetic locations in the city – The National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks – the series promises an unforgettable music experience a short Luas trip away from the centre of the city. \nThirty-five years since their debut\, Deacon Blue take centre stage on the 23rd. Their 2012 comeback single ‘The Hipsters’ heralded a new lease of life for the group and jump-started a second act that’s seen them more fired up and prolific than ever. Claire Grogan’s Altered Images and hip young Dublin quartet WineMom support. \nJames Blunt headlines on the 24th\, with Gareth Dunlop opening proceedings. With seven albums released since 2004 and over 20 million records sold worldwide\, Blunt’s popularity hasn’t faded and it’s no surprise that this performance has already sold out. \n \nOn August 25th\, The The bring their Ensouled world tour to Dublin\, their first since 2018. Active since 1979\, they’re one of England’s most loved bands. Matt Johnson’s political lyrics have always captured the zeitgeist so it’s a timely return. Local heroes A Lazarus Soul – who have just released their brilliant ‘No Flowers Grow In Cement Gardens’ album –  provide support on the night. \nJames takes over Collin Barracks on the 26th\, with The Zutons in support. Known for their compelling rock anthems like ‘Johnny Yen’ in the 1980s\, James achieved mainstream success with their 1990 album ‘Gold Mother’\, which included their massive hit ‘Sit Down’. When Amy Winehouse covered The Zutons song ‘Valerie’ the royalty cheques poured in and drew attention to one of the UK’s most entertaining bands. Recently reformed\, their appearance guarantees a top night out. \nGossip headline on the 27th\, marking their return with a first album in over a decade\, ‘Real Power’. The album celebrates creative expression while exploring themes of personal trauma. The brilliant Dublin 4 piece Sprints and American indie trio Nation of Language support to close out a stellar six days of music. \nWider Than Pictures takes place at The National Museum of Ireland\, Collins Barracks\, D7 August 23rd – 27th \nInfo & tickets: widerthanpictures.ie

SUMMARY:Social Unrest Festival
DESCRIPTION:Three nights of Punk Rock performed by bands from the U.S\, U.K and Ireland prove that punk is back but did it really ever go away? It’s a great topic over a few beers in the local but these three nights certainly prove that it has never been in a healthier state since the glory days of 1977. \nThe big draw is bound to be Ruts D.C who’s 1979 top ten hit single ‘Babylon’s Burning’ is a bona fide classic of the genre along with their brilliant reggae infused singles ‘Jah War’ and ‘Staring At The Rude Boys’. \n \nCulture Shock\, The Upstarts\, The Gakk\, Paranoid Visions and The Vulpynes are among a hoard of great bands playing so sugar soap up the mohawk and get moshing. \nSocial Unrest Festival  takes place at The Grand Social on Aug 9/10/11th \nsocialunrestfest.com

SUMMARY:Music For Gaza
DESCRIPTION:As the unconscionable genocide of the Palestinian people plays out in real time\, the solidarity of the majority of the artists on these shores has been utterly unwavering. The less said about our hypocrite headed to Eurovision\, the better\, but aside from them\, artists like Kneecap\, Gurriers and Soda Blonde have dropped out of performances at massive US festivals like SXSW for their ties to Israel. Lankum\, who share a member with the phenomenal ØXN\, have had shows cancelled in Germany and speeches cut from RTÉ Choice Prize Awards\, but whether it’s Ian Lynch’s ever present keffiyeh or Radie Peat‘s moving\, poignant words as they accept awards\, their work to voice the horrors happening in Gaza has been ceaseless. \nWith all proceeds going to MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians)\, this special performance also brings together experimental folk wunderkind\, Junior Brother\, art punk overlords Pretty Happy\, and the ecstatic jubilation that is Mohammad Syfkhan to do the right thing. To try to make a stand to aid the people of Palestine. \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh \nMusic For Gaza takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday June 11th at the Button Factory. Tickets here. \nThose who can’t attend but wish to donate can do so here.

SUMMARY:The Depot Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Times have changed. When I was pacing nervously up and down the backstage area of venues such as The Rock Garden and The New Inn in the 90s’\, stage time was usually 10pm with curfew at 11.30pm. These days if you arrive at 9.30 at a venue there’s a good chance the headliners are midway through their set. It’s hardly rock n roll so it’s good to see that one of our favourite venues is bucking the trend for their self curated Depot Sessions with live music programmed up until midnight. Proper gig time! Spread over two nights\, the sessions are a nicely curated 3 band line up per night with some red hot contenders in the mix. SexyTadhg\, Fizzy Orange and WineMom perform on Thursday while Really Good Time\, Squarehead and Cruel Sister are Friday’s bill of fare. All acts bring something fresh to the table and are well worth checking out. \nTickets are only a tenner and are available online from thecomplex.ie \nThe Depot Sessions take place at The Complex\, Smithfield from 8.30pm – 12am on Thursday June 6th & Friday June 7th.\n \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh

SUMMARY:Lavery - ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch
DESCRIPTION:One of the most exciting prospects in Jazz and Soul in Ireland and the moment\, this Dublin based octet imbues their funky neo soul with an authenticity and musicianship that many of their contemporaries\, quite simply\, lack. The second show in Dublin in a busy month of May\, the night also marks the release of their excellent\, excellent new EP\, ‘Jade Garden’. Boasting an absolute powerhouse of a voice in Annalise Furkin\, who fronts a lineup featuring Havana Roots/Yankari saxman Richard Ng and TBL8 Brass Band trombone player Martin Farrelly. Every performance I’ve seen of the group has been a fire breathing showcase of sublime artistry married with technical mastery.  Not to be missed\, especially if you’re the type to tell people\, “I was there.” – Adhamh O Caoimh \nLavery – ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch takes place Upstairs in Whelan’s on Saturday May 25th

SUMMARY:Sophie Coyle Launches Second Album
DESCRIPTION:The talented Irish folksinger\, songwriter and illustrator\, Sophie Coyle\, releases her highly anticipated second album\, Cuentista\, this coming Friday\, April 12th. Evoking the ambiance of a late-night tango bar\, Coyle’s new album promises listeners an enchanting\, immersive musical voyage through South America\, encapsulating her own experiences\, and tales from her travels. The new album builds on Coyle’s previous album\, Blame Me for the Storm\, which was long listed for Album of the Year at the Folk Awards. \nThe Dundalk based musician tells us that the album first came together in the early days of the pandemic\, “We began recording in Black Mountain Studios at the start of the pandemic\, and we welcomed another two kids into our lives along the way\, making it an epic journey. Now\, as we prepare to release the album\, I couldn’t be happier. I feel that both the lyric writing and production have evolved significantly since the first album\, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.” \nThere’s an opportunity to do just that at what promises to be a great evening out as Sophie plays live in Dublin’s Bello Bar this Friday\, with special guests SELK and Gar Cox. \nTickets are available here. \n \nThe album can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp \nsophiecoyle.bandcamp.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This mob are one of the most intense\, full-on\, rub you up the right/wrong way live acts around. Punk poetry parlando\, with driving rhythms and industrial dirt. Art rock\, but not arty (OK\, maybe a bit)\, they like their Iggy & the Stooges\, their Velvet Underground\, Leonard Cohen\, Sonic Youth\, Patti\, PJ\, Neu!\, you name it. \nThey’re a mongrel bunch\, for sure. Guitarist Dan does dirty as well as drones. Johnny switches from sci-fi keyboards to rotten noise guitar\, pedal boards everywhere. The rhythm section is an octopus: Paul and Harvey and the Gangnus sisters Rebecca and Jasmin. Jas also played loads of violin on the last record. \nThe troupe are fronted by writer and spoken-word mouth almighty Peter Murphy\, author of the novels John the Revelator and Shall We Gather at the River (Faber). In September 2021 the band embarked on a German mini-tour\, playing Wuppertal and Berlin as part of the travelling Here/There exhibition\, supported by Culture Ireland. They followed this with a sold-out show in Wexford Opera House with guests Basciville and poet Stephen James Smith\, plus a collaborative EP\, Tell It to A Tree. \n \nCursed Murphy Versus the Resistance released their second album\, Republic of the Weird\, in November 2022. A more divergent piece of work\, using electronics and folk overtones and string arrangements\, it sounded future-shocked and rather beautiful in parts\, in the same way a volcanic eruption or an oil spill is beautiful. It produced a slew of singles: ‘Hold That Line’\, ‘Republic of the Weird’\, and ‘This Is Not Your Love Song’\, the latter an industrial-disco banger somewhere between Leonard and Trent Reznor\, co-written and co-produced with Basciville. \nBefore we let you go\, you’ll be needing to hear what some nice folk wrote about them. Hot Press dubbed them “avant-garde adventurers from Wexford”\, which made them sound fierce cool altogether\, and voted Republic of the Weird the spoken word album of 2022 (even though it’s not really a spoken word album\, but never look a gift horse etc…). Among their peers\, their most vocal admirers include Undertone Paul McLoone\, Cathy from Pillow Queens\, the lads from Sons of Southern Ulster\, novelist Donal Ryan and one-time Cramps bass-player and general alt. legend Fur Dixon. See below for a brag wall’s worth of quotes.

SUMMARY:Gig for Gaza
DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian horrors which are unfolding in Palestine are beyond harrowing. Besides the calls for an immediate ceasefire\, the war being waged has not just elicited sympathy and condemnation but also spurred on artists to come together to aid a shattered people. There are countless fundraisers on the go but the Gig for Gaza is the big one. Lankum\, Damien Dempsey\, Lisa O’Neill and The Mary Wallopers will all take to the stage for a concert with all net proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians. A poster for the gig designed by Selkies and screen-printed by Damn Fine Print will be available from Bang Bang in Phibsborough and at the gig itself\, priced at €30. This will be the first of a number of gigs and events around Ireland under the ‘Irish Artists for Palestine’ Group that will take place from November 28 to December 3 with full listings available on irishartistsforpalestine.com. Bit of a shame that Ticketmaster didn’t waive or donate fees on this.

SUMMARY:Yves Tumor
DESCRIPTION:“And the reason I think we’re a good match is because you’re disagreeable and I’m disagreeable and we’re both incredibly othered and you don’t seem to have much of an interest in being fucking warm\, fuzzy\, and user-friendly…You’re already leaning into the fucking othered. You’re occupying spaces that – I’ve been there as a woman – are traditionally held by a certain type of person that isn’t us.” This extract is from Courtney Love’s fangirl interview with Yves for Interview this spring\, one of two he has done in the last five years. The reviews for his latest release Praise a Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume have been fulsome with praise – “seeking the mysterious nexus where Loveless meets Purple Rain” (Pitchfork)\, “a deranged beckoning into a free space” (NPR). Tumor also revealed his love for a genre called extratone\, “it’s basically techno\, but the bpm is sped up to a thousand. It sounds like a humming sound.” \n \n

SUMMARY:Johnny Jewel
DESCRIPTION:You might have seen Drive\, caught the Chromatics at Forbidden Fruit or Vicar Street\, watched the Twin Peaks reboot\, listened to a remix of The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights or simply know Italians Do It Better (the record label). If you have\, you’ve been in the presence of Johnny Jewel and his Midas touch. In many ways his evocative urban synth pop sound came to define the post Drive era spilling into the likes of Stranger Things and beyond. His latest single The Witch is from the soundtrack to forthcoming horror film Holly and straight out of the John Carpenter playbook. “I never have to motivate myself to work\,” Jewel told the Guardian before debuting this show at Christine and the Queens Meltdown festival this summer. “I never get tired of it. It’s therapy\, it’s meditation\, it’s trance\, it’s inner space\, it’s the greatest feeling. The possibilities are infinite and it’s impossible to be satiated.”

SUMMARY:Hilary Woods
DESCRIPTION:“A fugue comprised of nine slow hypnotic dirges” is how Acts of Light\, Woods’ forthcoming album on Sacred Bones is described by her people. Woods continues her sonic excavations spanning field recordings in Spain\, strings in Oslo and the Palestrina choir in the Pro Cathedral. Where The Bough Has Broken\, the first single off the album\, is cunningly envisioned through RTÉ newsreel archives. “This video muses on the beauty of community and resilience\, made to a piece of music that celebrates connection and the specificity and transience of time\, space\, and human expression. This music video is a visual love letter to the Dublin City I grew up in\, to the spirit of familial roots and the extraordinary moments in ordinary life that leave their lasting impression\,” says Woods. She will be accompanied on these shows by pioneering and visionary drummer and percussionist Gabriel Ferrandini. \n
