SUMMARY:Album Launch: Edel Meade's "Blue Fantasia"
DESCRIPTION:Following on from the video release of ‘Blue Fantasia’\, an enthralling experimental piece earlier this year\, and ‘Sideways’\, a gorgeous\, evocative lullaby of sorts\, Edel launches her album full of sophisticated\, romantic and beautifully unpredictable music. \nHer songs are almost episodic in structure\, meandering through vivid ensemble instrumentation\, bursts of Funk\, and intimate balladry\, all led by her soulful – and vulnerable – voice. \nAcclaimed Irish vocalist and composer\, Edel Meade\, celebrates the release of ‘Blue Fantasia’\, her debut album with a 7-piece band\, with lush vocal harmonies and intimate lyrics. Edel says\, “I’ve always been drawn to artists who speak from the heart\, the ones who are honest and fearless in their approach.” \n“Certainly I’ve been inspired by Joni Mitchell and singers like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone who share a piece of their soul with you when they sing.”

SUMMARY:Dublin Podcast Festival: No Encore
DESCRIPTION:A fun and informal music podcast in which Dave\, Colm and Craig attempt to make sense of the music that finds its way into their ears on a constant basis. With tangents. \nFollowing on from a spectacular sold-out live debut in March\, Ireland’s pre-eminent music podcast NO ENCORE will once again take to the stage at Whelan’s on Thursday September 28. \nThe event takes place as part of the first ever Dublin Podcast Festival\, presented by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions\, and will see hosts Dave Hanratty\, Colm O’Regan and Craig Fitzpatrick recording an episode live from one of the capital’s most storied venues. \nThey won’t be alone\, either\, with three of the country’s most exciting live acts for company – sets from instrumental behemoths Overhead\, The Albatross\, West-coast wunderkind Daithí and electronic luminary Elaine Mai are also part of what’s guaranteed to be another extraordinary night of entertainment. \nIt’s another milestone in an already impressive year\, which has seen the podcast go from strength to strength in their second season. As well as wowing a capacity Workman’s Club crowd to bring up the half-century\, the show has welcomed lively interviewees including Hamilton Leithauser\, Girl Band and Ho99o9 – and continued to further its status as an incisive\, irreverent and unmissable jaunt through the world of music. \nThere will be no holds barred. There will be no apologies. And there will be NO ENCORE LIVE.

SUMMARY:Amber Arcades
DESCRIPTION:Hailed by the Guardian as “a real talent\,” Amber Arcades comes to Dublin this Sunday September 27th to bless the air with her mesmerizing melodies. The swirling\, steely songs on Amber Arcades’ dazzling debut are the work of Annelotte De Graaf\, a woman inspired by “time\, continuity\, coincidence and magic”\, as well as early-morning jetlag (on ‘Turning Light\,’ shown below) and an artist’s plans for a utopian city (‘Constant’s Dream’). \nThat may all sound pretty dreamy\, and these songs do have wonderful ethereal qualities\, but De Graaf’s dreams are not the whimsical kind. De Graaf’s dreams have led to her working as a legal aide on UN war crime tribunals\, to inviting skint strangers to share her Utrecht squat\, and to spending her life savings on a flight to New York because that’s where she wanted to record her first album. \n“I made a list of five producers – I went on Discogs and looked at records I liked and who had produced them\, and I made the list and I emailed them with the demos I’d made at home in Garageband\,” she says. And that’s how she found producer Ben Greenberg. “It was kind of scary\, because he was definitely the odd one out\, looking at the stuff he’d done. The others were more mainstream\, and Ben was the weird one who’d produced all this hardcore punk shit. That’s also what I thought would make it interesting.” \nGreenberg has worked with Destruction Unit and The Men – bands who play punk\, skronky jazz\, experimental guitar noise and raucous pop – but he’d never worked with a Dutch artist whose only previous release was an EP of melancholic folk ballads.

SUMMARY:Dolittle Presents: Amina & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Lauded by the Irish Times “quietly spooktacular\,” this show is a live performance to the 1913 French silent film Juve Contre Fantômas \nHailing from Reykjavík Iceland\, Amiina are a five piece band comprising of Hildur Ársælsdóttir\, María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir\, Sólrún Sumarliðadóttir\, Magnús Trygvason Eliassen and Guðmundur Vignir Karlsson (aka Kippi Kaninus). \n\nAmiina’s origins go back to the late 1990s\, when four girls studying string instruments at the Reykjavík College of Music formed a string quartet. The group started out playing classical music\, but increasingly moved on to play all sorts of music with various bands in Reykjavík. In 1999 the quartet joined Icelandic band Sigur Róson-stage. The collaboration continued for over a decade\, with Amiina contributing strings to Sigur Rós’ music on tour and in the recording studio on the albums ( ) \, Takk\, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust and Valtari. \nMelancholic and ethereal\, yet full of suspense\, pounding rhythms and haunting melodies\, Amiina’s fans won’t be disappointed. SUMMARY:clap your hands say yeah
DESCRIPTION:Coming to Whelan’s this Friday\, September 15th\, is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Like previous Clap Your Hands Say Yeah records\, The Tourist nods to Ounsworth’s musical heroes—a group that includes artists such as John Cale\, Robert Wyatt\, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. However\, this album also shows a natural progression from previous records. “Better Off” and “The Vanity Of Trying” are lush\, keyboard-augmented songs\, while “A Chance To Cure” and “Ambulance Chaser” are rhythmically askew\, and the sighing “Loose Ends” is delicate\, acoustic-based folk-rock. \nThe Tourist emerged from a period where Ounsworth was doing a lot of intense soul-searching\, and processing personal events that irrevocably shaped his life and future. But although most of these songs came together during this time of reflection\, he considers the record to be cathartic—an exhale of sorts\, rather than a collection of songs where he was indulging in self-pity or letting things stagnate or fester. \n \n“I am a relatively solitary person and seem to work best alone\,” he says. “I do count on others to help the project as the process of making and releasing an album moves forward\, but if it doesn’t match what I have in mind\, it’s hard for me to really be there for it. I guess this is one reason why the project has been independent all this time. Trust me\, I understand that thinking this way is both an asset and a liability.”

SUMMARY:Shelby Earl
DESCRIPTION:Shelby Earl weaves epic stories of love\, loss and darkness with her emotive voice. Treading the line between indie and folk\, Shelby is an essential part of a new wave of female musicians like Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten who are writing poetic song lyrics and offsetting them with sparse production in order to expose the heavyweight emotions at play. \nShelby draws characters in her musical stories; her latest album tells tales of babies not yet born and of women who will cry an ocean of tears\, if only to test their ability to swim. Couched in symbolism\, each track is like a short story that you listen to over and over\, annotating it in your mind. \nExperience Shelby’s power and storytelling skill at Whelan’s this Sunday\, September 10th.

SUMMARY:Song Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Well into it’s third year\, Whelans Singer songwriter night ‘Song Cycle’ continues to offer a platform for local and non local acts to experiment\, sing and share in the friendly informal setting of Whelan’s front window. Taking our cues from our favourite artists musings on the creative process (Van Dyke Parks lends us the title from his seminal 1967 opus) this night offers artists a fresh new stage to breath life into songs\, experiment with ideas or simply just play for the sheer enjoyment of it. \nThe Format of Song Cycle has developed a little since moving downstairs earlier this year.  Regular hosts Ollie Cole and John Byrne help us curate the evening and take part as well by performing some of their works in progress as well as old standards. Needless to say an impromptu session is never too far away if some of their special guests feel like playing a song or two. \nSong Cycle takes place in Whelan’s front bar every Monday\, admission is free and all are welcome to play.

SUMMARY:Ballet Átha Cliath
DESCRIPTION:Dublin Art Rock braintrust\, Cloud Castle Lake\, like to keep things somewhat low-key. Following the swell of praise that followed their meticulously assembled Dandelion EP\, the trio took a step back from the limelight\, focussing wholly on completing their LONG anticipated debut full length. So\, it’s with no small degree of excitement that we welcome their return to the fold with their first Dublin live show since 2016\, and it’s a special one at that… \n\nBallet Átha Cliath is a new short dance performance film by Howard Jones\, shot over the course of a day last August in Dublin featuring ballet choreographed by Irish ballerina Zoë Ashe-Browne and features an original score composed by none other than Cloud Castle Lake. Tomorrow night\, the band will be performing their soundtrack live\, as part of a Ballet Átha Cliath in the Sugar Club. Following the film showing\, the band promise to debut a selection of new work set to appear on their upcoming record. If all that wasn’t enticing enough; support on the night come courtesy of one the country’s most exciting new artists – Davy Keohe. Davy’s debut Short Passing Game has comfortably asserted its position as one of the year’s most essential domestic releases – we can’t wait to see what Davy has in store for this special full-band performance.

SUMMARY:Francesco Tristano
DESCRIPTION:He’s a Boiler Room bunny\, he’s recorded with Carl Craig and Derrick May\, he’s a cool cat blending  classical and electronica and he’s bringing his exhilarating Piano 2.0 show to the Concert Hall tonight as part of The Dublin International Piano Festival 2017 \n \nTristano trained as a classical pianist at the esteemed Juilliard School in Manhattan\, and the great city of New York in the late 1990s was where his obsession with electronic music began. His desire to merge his love of classical piano and dance music resulted in the genre-defying debut Not For Piano in 2007\, which incorporated covers from the iconic Detroit house and techno scenes including the classic ‘Strings Of Life’ by Derrick May. \n \n“The fact is\, Bach can sound great played on synthesisers\, too\, so why would Carl Craig or Derrick May’s music not sound great on a piano?” remarked Tristano. No stranger to cross-genre collaboration\, Tristano has worked with both May and Craig; most recently on the latter’s album Versus. He will perform the solo version of the album highlight ‘The Melody’ in Piano 2.0. \n \nA master of sonic experimentation\, combining pianistic perfection and earth-shattering electronic textures\, Tristano’s work is continuously evolving and defying the expectations of the music world. Amongst the scores of Johann Sebastian Bach\, Frescobaldi\, Rameau and others\, Tristano adds layers of magical minimalism with the latest production tools\, sequencers and synthesisers. \nThe Sony recording artist possesses the ability to highlight common elements of both Baroque piano styles and electronic music\,  creating mesmerising work where the two meet. His commitment to innovation makes him one of the most exciting pianists working today. It’s rare to find a classical artist influenced by both Bach and Daft Punk. For him\, the classification of music is far too restrictive.

SUMMARY:Belle and Sebastian
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Indie Pop legends Belle & Sebastian return to Dublin. \nThe best pop groups want to change the world. They want to leave an imprint that no one forgets\, to do more than check out as a minor statistic in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. They want to change the world of pop\, and to engage with the politics of pop. Belle & Sebastian have re-invented the pop festival; they signed to a tiny independent label but still beat Steps to a BRIT\, before sweeping into the Top 40\, then the Top 20. They’ve brought their lost sixties heroine\, Evie Sands\, over to play a show in Glasgow. They’ve sold out a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. And\, in 2014\, they cut an album – their ninth – called Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance\, that blends electro-glide\, baroque balladry\, and giant-sized Europop hooks. They deserve several accolades\, each of which are rare for any band in 2014 – Belle & Sebastian are unique\, unpredictable\, and fiercely loved. \nPart of their appeal is that Belle and Sebastian have always given the impression of being completely unaware that they are even famous. Emerging in the late nineties\, they appeared to be both press and camera-shy\, but also entirely self-contained; they seemed to have a secret\, something built around books and films\, and yet were happy to share the love\, stopping just short of writing individual songs for their fans. And their fans\, naturally\, became obsessive\, formed their own bands\, started their own loosely affiliated clubs\, radio shows and websites. A secret gang – who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? \nBut then again if you’re a band who works with Trevor Horn\, Carey Mulligan and Norah Jones\, you’re probably not content to lurk in the tiny shadow offered by a seven-inch single on Postcard. And if you end up on the soundtrack to Adam Curtis’s The Power Of Nightmares\, or Todd Solondz’s Storytelling\, as well as Juno\, then there’s going to be more than a little grit and grain to your music than adjectives like “shy” and “fragile” might suggest. \nBelle & Sebastian have always understood well the art of song structure. They write precise and elegantly constructed melodies\, and have never skimped with middle eights\, bridges and codas. Belle & Sebastian have stood as something different right from the beginning. Let’s have a quick poke around the previous eighteen years. Debut album Tigermilk (1996) was the product of a Stow College music business class that drummer Richard Colburn was taking; just 1\,000 vinyl copies were pressed. In spite of huge major label interest (immortalised on the track Seymour Stein on their third album\, The Boy With The Arab Strap) they initially signed to the tiny Jeepster label\, then later to Rough Trade and now have their first worldwide deal with Matador Records. The key to their appeal was a sense of community. Their self-curated Bowlie festival would evolve into All Tomorrow’s Parties; they became central to a nascent message board culture\, and a US loop of labels and fanzines (even writing a song about one\, Chickfactor) that adored their music\, their stance\, and their imagery. \nIn Britain they famously upset the applecart in 1999 by winning the “Best Newcomers” BRIT award through the votes of their fans\, faced accusations of vote rigging\, and in the process have got the backs of the tabloids up (sample Daily Record headline: “Belle Boy’s At It Again”). So\, clearly\, they’ve been doing something right. \nThere’s nothing obviously tabloid-baiting on Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance\, though the bold step onto the dancefloor is bound to raise some eyebrows. “Be popular – play pop\, and you will win my love” is the final line on ‘The Everlasting Muse’\, and is the lyrical heart of an album about love\, the love of music\, and the power of pop. Given that Murdoch has openly declared himself pro-bubblegum before\, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that ‘Enter Sylvia Plath’\, ‘The Book Of You’ and ‘Play For Today’ have keyboard hooks that recall Scandinavian pop machines past and present. The filmic loves\, kitchen sink imagery and baroque touches are still there\, too\, don’t worry. \nIt’s all about trusting in the restorative power of pop music. If you’d trust anyone to write a great Europop song about Sylvia Plath\, you’d trust Belle & Sebastian. \nwww.belleandsebastian.com \n
