SUMMARY:Danny Krivit
DESCRIPTION:“Music is one of the greatest forms of escapism. Music can transform your mood\, sense of being and transport you to another time and place. I can stick on a pair of earphones and be transported to a tropical beach in the Caribbean\, a smoke filled basement club in Berlin\, a B-Boy battle at The Roxy or a Disco in Manhattan. Going to a club and listening to someone like Danny Krivit is the epitome of this. It takes me to a time and place which I missed out on\, but will forever imagine. Getting to hear\, and play with\, someone who was instrumental in the whole Disco scene\, and no to forget the creator of the edit scene\, gives us a little insight into what dancefloors and DJ’s were like back then. And because Danny has been playing\, travelling\, collecting and producing since then\, we get to hear a true master take us through the decades to now. The importance of people such as Danny can never be understated\, as he paved the way\, influenced many new waves of DJs/diggers/producers and still continues to be a shining light for those of us who still want to loose ourselves on a dancefloor. Love Is The Message.” – Billy Scurry (is doing a DJ support slot)

SUMMARY:Adrian Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Midst the fanfare of hometown musicians and their trumpeting of Christmas shows sits the unassuming Crowley. He may fly under the radar of the masses but Crowley brings a tender beauty to his compositions and considerations on existence. Dark Eyed Messenger\, his most recent release\, is produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens\, The Gloaming) and sees Crowley put down his guitar and “decide to live out his days as a silver birch tree”. A sturdy musical presence who may be overshadowed at times but one who we should truly rejoice!

SUMMARY:Gaelynn Lea
DESCRIPTION:Gaelynn Lea was given the opportunity of a lifetime when she won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. More than 6\,000 artists submitted videos in which they performed an original song behind a desk of their choosing with the hope of winning a chance to play a Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Gaelynn Lea was the overwhelming favorite of the six judges. and Gaelynn Lea certainly made the most of it. She and her husband Paul quit their jobs\, sold their house\, bought a van\, and hit the road. \nSince they left just over a year ago\, Gaelynn has played over 200 shows in 39 states and 6 countries. She has performed in the widest variety of venues imaginable – coffee shops\, bars\, music festivals\, elementary schools\, nursing homes\,colleges\, The House of Blues\, Music City Roots\, The Kennedy Center\, The State Department and even BBC World News. \nThis tale of adventure wouldn’t be particularly remarkable if the music failed to deliver. But Gaelynn Lea has developed a “stop you in your tracks sound.” (Bob Boilen\, All Songs Considered) Playing traditional fiddle music and original songs using her violin and a looping pedal\, Gaelynn Lea’s “music is imbued with a melancholic poetry so potent it must be heard to believed.” (Isaac Feldberg\, Boston Globe) \nGaelynn Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing violin 20 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies “to create a symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective”. (Collins de la Cour\, Ear to the Ground) Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence – dark and light\, birth and death\, anger and forgiveness\, sorrow and joy. Gaelynn Lea’s live performances can be overwhelmingly soul-stirring – Bob Boilen reported that “there was hardly a dry eye” at her 2016 Tiny Desk Concert. However\, she is not all seriousness during her shows. In fact\, Gaelynn is disarmingly charming onstage\, “at once self-deprecating and plain spokenly funny”. (Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune) She regales the audience with humorous anecdotes in between songs\, putting those in attendance at ease. \nAlthough the past year has been spent mostly on the road\, Gaelynn Lea has somehow found the time to work on her fourth studio album; If Only Love Would Be Our Guide is expected to be released in September 2018. It is an eclectic collection that runs the gamut sonically – from pensive to luscious to aggressive to decidedly pop – and if that’s not enough variety\, there’s even a Finnish fiddle tune! The connecting thread of this album is Gaelynn Lea herself – a singular voice and violin guide the listener on a journey which touches on some of life’s greatest mysteries. \n  \nThe structure of these tracks made this album impossible to create alone\, so Gaelynn Lea enlisted the help of some musical friends to bring her new album to life. This arrangement is quite a departure for Lea\, who up until this point has crafted most of her music using only a few tools: a violin\, a voice\, and a looping pedal. Her band is comprised of several Minnesota heavy-hitters including Al Church\, Dave Mehling\, Marty Dosh\, Andrew Foreman\, and Alan Sparhawk. Their creative influence and musicality is evident on every track\, though the band’s contributions never cover up or diminish the poignancy or presence of Gaelynn’s music. Rather the new album allows for a fuller\, more complete expression of her heart and soul. \n  \nIn addition to performing and recording\, Gaelynn also loves to do speaking engagements about disability awareness\, the power of music\, and leading an enriching life. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta\, or Brittle Bones Disease. \n  \nGaelynn is a strong voice in the disability community; she uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. Gaelynn Lea believes society must prioritize accessibility so people with disabilities can participate in their communities and use their gifts without barriers or discrimination.

SUMMARY:Jacob Banks at the Sugar Club
DESCRIPTION:While his fans await the release of his new LP Village with heightened relish\, Banks is laying the foundations blocks for the well justified hype with a series of EPs and this sell-out tour. The gravely vocals belie Banks’s 26 years on this planet. Tracks such as Silver Lining and Chainsmoking are classics in the making. You will be hearing alot more about Banks in 2018. This is your chance to chalk down the ‘I was there’ line for your own future repertoire.

SUMMARY:Perfume Genius
DESCRIPTION:No Shape\, the third release by Seattle’s Mike Hadreas has truly elevated the Genius as an equal component to the intoxicating Perfume of this performer. His art-rock sound is likely to have earned him a few choice placements in the albums of 2017 by the time this show swings into town. Those who caught him at the Electric Picnic will easily attest as to why you must see him.

SUMMARY:Crash Ensemble | 20 Years
DESCRIPTION:Crash Ensemble are Ireland’s ‘foremost contemporary music ensemble’ and they celebrate 20 years in existence this year.  \nReflecting on your 20 years of contemporary classical music\, how do you think Crash Ensemble has maintained the dynamic and cutting-edge sound it’s so revered for? \nContemporary music is about the future\, pushing boundaries\, the new and the next. It’s really important to the ensemble to keep moving and evolving. We don’t just play existing repertoire or even commission new work\, we look at who we work with\, how we present work and engage with audiences. \nOver the past summer\, CrashLands\, your new music project\, has crash landed in various spots around the country. How important is space in your musical creations? How much does it inform the kind of sounds you create? \nCrashLands was very much about the context. The first CrashLands was on Long Island\, West Cork. We performed on the edge of a cliff with the sun setting behind us. The audience came over on the ferry\, and when that sold out they took to their own boats and kayaks to make sure they didn’t miss out. We had to learn how to deal with being outdoors\, with weather\, how this changes how sound travels and communication. It was a challenge that we learned from\, after 20 years there is still room for learning and evolving! \nThe diverse assortment of composers that made up the 20 creators in the CrashLands project is eclectic to say the least. How did you go about curating the composers for the project? \nWe asked 20 composers to write us new pieces for our birthday. These are composers who have worked with us over the years or who we wanted to work with in the future. They’re composers who we felt say something about the past\, present and future of new music and Crash. Of the twenty composers ten are from Ireland and ten are from outside of Ireland. \nIn choosing these composers from around the world as well as from home\, did you draw inspiration from other cultures and if so whom? \nCrash is an internationally known group and we see ourselves in that context. \nAmerican music has always been deeply important to the ensemble\, right from the founding of the ensemble in 1997. Composer and Crash founder\, Donnacha Dennehy\, had just returned to Ireland after graduate studies at the University of Illinois. He wanted to set up a new type of music ensemble in Ireland\, one that was open to the influences from contemporary popular culture\, while also deeply committed to the values of serious music endeavour. \nAmerican minimal and post-minimal work featured strongly in early programs\, introducing Irish audiences to unapologetic pieces such as Philip Glass’s Music in Similar Motion. We have also forged links to Iceland of late. We played Airwaves last year and our latest album came out this year on the Icelandic Bedroom Community label\, and we have plans up our sleeves with composer/conductor Daniel Bjarnason. \nYou’ve collaborated with filmmaker Brendan Canty and poet Doireann Ni Ghríofa for your compositions for CrashLands. Do you think you will continue to challenge the barriers between different art forms?  \nAbsolutely\, we are not interested in keeping to our silo\, either musically or art form. What matters to us is the quality of the work and in the delivery. We will always produce serious hard-core contemporary music\, but we also look around us to see how we can be part of a wider conversation. \nIn celebration of their 20 birthday\, Crash Ensemble will perform all twenty works from CrashLands over two nights at the National Concert Hall\, Dublin\, with the films from Brendan Canty and readings from Doireann Ní Ghríofa\, on Friday November 24 and Saturday November 25. \nCrashLands\, the album will be out in 2018. \ncrashensemble.com

SUMMARY:James Heather
DESCRIPTION:James Heater is going to play at the National Concert Hall this November 4th. Off the back of the release of his debut album Stories from Far Away on Piano comes a debut show. Signed to a Ninja Tunes imprint where he also works\, Heather is very much in the mode of acclaimed neo-classical contemporary composers such as Max Richter and Jóhann Jóhannsson. His debut has a suitably wintry and evocative feel with minimal arpeggios slowly enveloping the listener. You can book your tickets online here.

SUMMARY:ICP Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Instant Composers Pool are a renowned collective of Dutch composers-improvisers and instrumentalists founded 50 years ago. Han Bennink\, one of its founders\, is known for his absurdist\, theatrical performances\, frequently playing found objects with a penchant for chairs. \nThe band’s big enough to shout but compact enough to hold the focus and stay on point. In performance\, its tone and frames of reference keep shifting. The action is fluid\, dreamlike: surreal music exploding into reality. An ICP set contains new and old tunes\, jazz business and maybe a little funny business\, full-force raveups and improvised breakdowns. Taking the meaning of jazz to new levels and challenging what we call music\, ICP play the Sugar Club on Saturday November 4th.

SUMMARY:St Vincent
DESCRIPTION:After crash-landing back into our collective consciousness with “New York\,” Annie Clarke\, aka St Vincent has re-affirmed her claim on the Pop Throne. The first single from her forthcoming album will easily rank among the greatest singles of 2017. Swapping guitar for piano\, it is a heartbreaking lament for a lover and an anthem that will see her right. \nIt was clear she didn’t enjoy the outdoor natter of her last time here in the Iveagh Gardens\, so the Olympia should be much more suited to her tastes. SUMMARY:(Sandy) Alex G
DESCRIPTION:At the end of “Poison Root\,” the opening track on (Sandy) Alex G’s (Alex Giannascoli to his friends) new album\, Rocket\, the 23-year-old artist repeats the phrase “Now\, I know everything” again and again\, his voice gliding over a wash of banjo\, violin\, and acoustic guitar sounds. It’s hard to determine the exact tone: does he truly think he knows everything? Or are these incantations a form of self-assurance\, covering up insecurity? Expect complex questions like these to pop up again and again on the dynamic artist’s new album. Playing Whelan’s this Tuesday October 17th\, Alex is sure to lend your evening a smash of colourful music and intriguing sounds. \nOver musical backdrops that seamlessly jump from sound collage to country pop to dreamy folk music\, the cast of characters that Alex G inhabits have fun\, fall in love\, develop obsessions\, get into trouble\, and burn out. Rocket illustrates a cohesive vision of contemporary experience that’s dark and foreboding\, perhaps especially because of how familiar\, or to use Alex’s word\, “unassuming\,” the settings are.
