SUMMARY:Sharon Van Etten
DESCRIPTION:Only two months ripped from the calendar but we’re still placing Sharon Van Etten’s Remind Me Tomorrow as the best release of 2019 (to date). Her fifth studio album is elevates and eclipses everything. It’s also informed by significant life choices since 2015’s Are We There. She’s become a mother\, studied psychology\, scored a film and starred in Netflx’s The OA. In other words\, she’s been keeping herself busy and this diversification informs the new material which is suffused by a sense of purpose\, precision and contentment. Her rich vocals\, edgy instrumentation and sophisticated lyrics remain in place; Comeback Kid\, Jupiter 4 and Seventeen are bona fide classics already. Expect serious adulation.

SUMMARY:Scary Éire
DESCRIPTION:Given the rude health of our hip-hop scene\, it’s interesting to contrast its more multi-racial and sophisticated sound with that of these early white pioneers. Scary Éire come from an era of People in Need Telethons and dole queues – a simpler time\, a shittier time. Fusing trad\, reggae\, ska and punk; they were helmed by two rappers (frontman Rí-Rá and hypeman Mr Browne)\, and two DJs (Mek and Dada Sloosh). Scary signed to Island Records and opened for U2 on their Zooropa tour. However\, their brush with the big time was fleeting. File under nostalgia.

SUMMARY:Conor Walsh - The Lucid
DESCRIPTION:Mayo pianist Conor Walsh tragically passed away three years ago. At the time\, the Swinford native was working on a release of long-form classical-contemporary piano-rooted music. His family and friends are posthumously releasing The Lucid and paying tribute to his staggering talent. A host of artists\, musicians and friends will perform works dedicated to his memory including Crash Ensemble and Meltybrains? “We wanted to remind people of all the different aspects of Conor; as a brother\, friend\, composer\, and artist\,” says his sister Fiona. “The subtle approach to this album will leave his fans in awe of his simplistic beauty.” \nDecember 2015 interview here \n \nPhoto: Mark McGuinness \n

SUMMARY:Kelsey Lu
DESCRIPTION:Kelsey Lu is a classically trained cellist\, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who has collaborated with Lady Gaga and Solange and is currently supporting Neneh Cherry also though she wasn’t on the bill for Cherry’s stellar show here last month. SUMMARY:Why-Axis
DESCRIPTION:Why-Axis aka Seán Ryan is part of the new kings of hip hop in the country who are flexing and\nmorphing the genre to their own will and needs with thrilling results. Popping and dropping singles\nsuch as Fly With Me\, High\, A Downtown Girl and Turn Around are easy indicators that Why-Axis\nknows how to get bounce and swagger from his sounds. Expect a progression from\nKnockanstockan (2018) to Longitude this summer as Why-Axis rides the wave he’s also creating.\nHe’s also collaborating with some fellow buzzers such as Elliot Ruddy on the motion graphics for\nTurn Around. SUMMARY:Microdisney
DESCRIPTION:You might need to ask an elder about Microdisney. They were a distinctly Irish slice of the ‘80s –\nCork’s answer to Something Happens and Ireland’s answer to Prefab Sprout\, or something like\nthat. Formed in Cork\, in 1980\, by Cathal Coughlan and Sean O’Hagan\, Microdisney are best\nknown for their track Town to Town and were signed to both Virgin and Rough Trade.\nThey chronicled the ‘80s as lived in worn denim and grim bedsits\, they supported The Fall.\nCoughlan and O’Hagan went on to form Fatima Mansions and The High Llamas\, respectively. Vox\nMagazine vol. 5 in the early eighties stated that “their behaviour is often mistaken as ‘uncool’\namongst the more hip dublin punter come intellectual” Let’s hope they cut the mustard in the\ncapital tonight. \nMonday February 18\, Vicar Street\, €46.86

SUMMARY:Danny Forde
DESCRIPTION:In an intimate performance at the beautiful Fumbally stables\, Danny Forde invites you to enjoy an evening of music from the soul. \nDanny will also be previewing songs from his debut EP release\, What Else Is There? – an exploration of love in its many forms and facets\, from romantic to universal to familial and beyond. What Else Is There? was composed and recorded on an inspired journey that spanned hemispheres\, meetings with countless new faces and landscapes\, adventures in trust on a shoestring\, and was recorded in studios and lo-fi living rooms in New York\, California\, Cape Town\, Stockholm\, London and Dublin\, in the perennial search for music played from the heart. \nDanny Forde is a singer-songwriter and composer hailing from Dublin. Vocal harmony\, string quartets\, fingerstyle guitar\, and healing sounds feature strongly in all his music. Danny trained originally as a concert pianist\, later cutting his teeth as a singer/guitarist with rock\, folk\, and funk bands\, before diving into the world of film and theatre composition where boundaries between the art forms break down\, all the while developing his songwriting craft and working in collaboration with some of Ireland’s finest and up-and-coming musicians including Bill Whelan\, Loah\, I Have A Tribe\, Slow Skies\, Trinity Orchestra\, members of Kila\, and Paul Brady to name a few. \n \nTaking influence from a wide range of artists and styles\, notably Bon Iver\, Damien Rice\, Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, Elbow\, and Nick Drake\, the music is acoustic-driven\, while often weaving in elements funk\, disco\, choral music and classical. \nComing from a background in Yoga\, Danny’s greatest inspiration comes from the ability of music to resonate with the goodness\, love and creative energy living inside everyone. \nTickets €13

SUMMARY:Neneh Cherry
DESCRIPTION:Neneh Cherry returned with Broken Politics\, her fifth studio album last year and her second one to be\nproduced by Kieran ‘Four Tet’ Hebden. You can hear the cross-over tinkerings from his New Energy\nalbum on intro track Fallen Leaves and it informs most of the album in an unintrusive manner. Cherry’s\nmellow\, yet incisive\, musings are embellished by delicate touches such as a xylophone on\nSynchronised Devotion. It might\, on occasion\, feel like a Sonos speaker soundtrack best enjoyed with\nfloor-to-ceiling windows looking out on a forest. And then Natural Skin Deep lands – the dream\nmarriage of their collaborations with an Ornette Coleman. Buffalo Stance from Raw Like Sushi dropped\n30 years ago. Rest assured Cherry’s still got it. \nThe Academy\, Saturday February 16\, €35 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Black Midi
DESCRIPTION:Rowing against the obvious tide is working in Black Midi’s favour. They have left few sonic breadcrumbs to date with no tracks on Spotify\, scant write-ups and just two videos – a performance in the Windmill venue in Brixton a year ago and a recording from Flesh & Bone studios in Hackney. What we do know is this ‘underground’ tag is working in favour of this four piece. Their sound is glitchy noisenik from what we’ve heard. They are signed to Rough Trade Management so in relatively adept hands. Next best thing? You decide.

SUMMARY:Poolside
DESCRIPTION:You may not know but if you have any modicum of self-respecting cool\, then you’ll have lapped up Poolside’s cover of Harvest Moon (28m Spotify plays) whether known or unbeknownst to yourself. You might have been asking for a pour of Albariño at the time and that would be perfectly ok too. This LA duo of Jeffrey Paradise and Filip Nikolic have released two albums date – Pacific Standard Time and Heat – both creating more of a ripple than wave effect. Channeling parts ELO and Phoenix\, their sunny sounds are just the type of inflatable sonic lilo the city needs at the end of a dreary month.

SUMMARY:Lil Mosey
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of turning 17\, Lil Mosey turns up in town. What we have gleaned from our exhaustive google research of this ‘sensation’ is that Pull Up is his banger single with over 20 million YouTube views. Each track on his debut album Northsbest comes with an explicit lyrics warning. His Christmas single K for Christmas informed us that ‘Hunnid K’ is a Vape Juice. We’re gonna sound all Tipper Gore by stating that Lil Mosey sadly sounds like the voice of the next generation content with the degradation of women in the hip-hop lyrics game. Don’t expect to bump into too many Totally Dublin readers tonight. Do expect him on a Longitude line-up.

DESCRIPTION:Brian Deady had been something of a well kept secret at home in Ireland until his song Clap Both My Hands became one of the most played Irish songs of 2016 and reached No.1 in the Spotify UK Viral charts. \nHis recent single ‘Get on My Knees’ has also featured in the hit American TV show ‘Lucifer’. \n \nConjuring up strong gospel influences\, at times the Irishman sounds more like he was raised in the Deep South than as one of 10 kids in Cork and his rich\, soulful voice comes with a contemporary R&B edge.

SUMMARY:The Murder Capital
DESCRIPTION:The first time\, and last time\, we caught The Murder Capital was at the Other Voices stage at Electric Picnic. The post-punk five-piece brought a fervid intensity to their set with lead singer James McGovern channeling the spirit of Ian Curtis in a fireball of rage. Unlike other acts on stage\, there was no recording of their set which we can only assume is down to a rollout strategy by their management team Q Prime. In joining them\, they link up with a meaty roster of acts such as The Black Keys\, Foals\, Metallica and Muse. With support slots to Slaves and Idles\, expect much bigger stages for the boys in 2019.

SUMMARY:Julia Holter
DESCRIPTION:Holter has just released her fifth album Aviary\, a complex 90-minute sweep of sounds and thoughts on the chaos of now. \nThere’s the crash of cymbals\, the caterwauling of bagpipes\, the stabbing of strings and the jumble of percussion. \nWords drenched in nonlinear enlightenment dip and soar with Holter deftly controlling its kite path. \n \nThe thought of all of this coming to a stage is quite thrilling. \nImage Credit: Tonje Thilesen \nThe Button Factory\, Saturday December 8\, €24

SUMMARY:The Redneck Manifesto
DESCRIPTION:“The first time I played with The Redneck Manifesto was in the Funnel Bar around the time they started out. We were thrown together on a bill and I hadn’t met them before. I was blown away\, almost intimidated by how fucking cool they were. The thing I noticed was how they all moved as if they are hearing a different downbeat or offbeat but always perfectly in sync. Being from Crumlin and playing so hard I thought they were real tough guys but they’re all kinda softies at heart\, maybe don’t fuck with Richie. I asked Rich to play bass in my band shortly after that Funnel gig and Matty a couple of years later on guitar. One of my favourite ever musical experiences was the night I got to fill in for Neil on synths and percussion at the Róisín Dubh around the time of I am Brazil. We’ve been through a lot together over the years so i’m thrilled to be involved in the celebration of the Irish band I’ve been to see most in my lifetime. I’ve said it before\, New Orleans had the Meters\, Lagos had Africa 70 and Dublin has The Redneck Manifesto.” – Davids Kitt (who supports them as New Jackson tonight along with The Dublin Guitar Quartet)

SUMMARY:Lauryn Hill
DESCRIPTION:The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released 20 years ago and it’s not an overstatement to rank it as one of the finest debut albums ever. It still sounds fresh and relevant and as Adele says “an honest representation of love and life”. It was to be the only solo studio record of The Fugees star. It’s also fair to say that this tour has been patchy at times with delays\, cancellations and Ms Hill discarding the likes of Santigold and Nas from support slots. You pay your money\, you take your chances.
