SUMMARY:Film: Mystery Matinee
DESCRIPTION:We all love a bit of suspense. A spin on the roulette table of hope. \nHence the enduring popularity of the surprise film at the film festival each year. \nMystery Matinee is a low stakes gamble. \nIn January you’d have got to see Ladybird\, a month before its general release. In February you’d have got to see Nicholas Cage in Mom and Dad. Poor Nicholas Cage consistently attached to dud flops for nearly two decades. \nStill talking points are guaranteed off the back of parting with yer fiver. \nIrish Film Institute\, Sunday March 18\, 1pm\, €5

SUMMARY:Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami
DESCRIPTION:Wild\, frightening\, and androgynous – Grace Jones plays all these parts. Yet\, in Bloodlight and Bami\, directed by Sophie Fiennes\, we also discover her as a lover\, daughter\, mother\, sister and even grandmother\, as she submits herself to our gaze and allows us to understand what constitutes her mask. It is one of those films that feeds our desire to know more about the artist as a human being\, not just a performer. \nThe film features live performances from her sensational shows filmed in the Olympia last year. It will be screened at the Lighthouse Cinema and the IFI. Check out the trailer below:

SUMMARY:Eat:Ith Screening: Bugs
DESCRIPTION:As part of Eat:Ith\, a series of events and discussions on food culture in Ireland\, there will be a screening of “Bugs” at the Fumbally Exchange tonight. “Bugs” takes a closer look at the concept of dining on insects. By drawing on facts that encourage the consumption of insects – from a UN suggestion that eating bugs can combat world hunger\, to knife-wielding chefs insisting on the delicious taste – insects seem to hold a lot of solutions to a lot of our problems. \nFor the past three years\, a team from Copenhagen-based Nordic Food Lab\, made up of chefs and researchers Josh Evans\, Ben Reade and Roberto Flore\, has been travelling the world to learn what some of the two billion people who already eat insects have to say. In “Bugs\,” film director Andreas Johnsen follows them as they forage\, farm\, cook and taste insects with communities in Europe\, Australia\, Mexico\, Kenya\, Japan and beyond. During their journey they encounter everything from revered termite queens and desert-delicacy honey ants to venemous giant hornets and long-horned grasshoppers trapped using powerful floodlights\, that sometimes cause their catchers temporary blindness. \nHowever\, with the prospect of increased consumption comes the worry of a kind of fast-food inflicted deterioration in quality. If industrially produced insects become the norm\, will they be as delicious and as beneficial as the ones in diverse\, resilient ecosystems and cuisines around the world? And who will actually benefit as insects are scaled up? \nDescribed by The New York Times as “an entertaining and eye-opening documentary\,” this is sure to satisfy your appetite. \nTickets can be purchased here.

SUMMARY:Freedom of Movement
DESCRIPTION:MART Gallery presents the exhibition Freedom of Movement by Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani\, supported by The Arts Council of Ireland\, Goethe Institut Dublin and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen. The exhibition has been curated by MART Gallery Manager Deirdre Morrissey. \nThe MART Gallery’s curatorial vision for 2017 is to select artists who work under the parameters of risk and political agitation\, creating powerful\, informative and experimental work. On Thursday\, August 24th MART will present ‘Freedom of Movement\,’ an exhibition of film work by renowned German artists Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani.MART first introduced the work of Fischer & el Sani to Ireland in 2014 when the artists presented film works ‘Narita Field Trip’ and ‘Spelling Dystopia’ in an exhibition curated by Barry Kehoe. Both pieces were created when the artists were Associate Professors at the School of Art and Design in Sapporo City University in Japan and explored tensions that arise between the forces of globalisation and specific local narratives.Always keen to build upon established relationships with international artists\, MART has invited Fischer and El Sani back to Dublin for the presentation of two recent film installations ‘Identity’s Rule of Three’ (2015) and ‘Freedom of Movement’ (2017) These films pose questions on various aspects of human identity and society\, the limits of geographical\, artistic and social structure\, and race relations.Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani are visual artists and directors who have worked collaboratively since the 1990s and both live and work in Berlin. Through their work they have explored narratives in various sites around the world juxtaposing hidden histories with the lived experiences of contemporary society and questioning cultural perspectives \nThe exhibition continues: 25 Aug – 22 Sept 2017

SUMMARY:TORCH SONG TRILOGY
DESCRIPTION:“Yeah. I’m among the last of a dying breed. Well\, once the E.R.A. and gay civil rights bills have been passed\, me and mine will be swept under the carpets like the blacks done to Amos\, Andy\, and Aunt Jemima. That’s all right. With a voice and a face like this\, I’m not worried. I can always drive a cab. And that\, chillun’\, is called power. Be it gay\, black\, or flowered it always comes down to the survival of the majority.” \nHarvey Fierstein\, in the play The International Stud (1978)\, later part of Torch Song Trilogy (1982) \n……………….. \nThe film is an adaptation of three one-act plays on the same character\, Arnold Beckoff\, all together four hours long. The film was scripted by the original author\, the multitalented Harvey Fierstein\, who starred in both the theatre production and the adaptation (Mathew Broderick played Arnold’s son on stage and Arnold’s husband in the movie). The film opens like the play\, with a monologue directly to the audience\, and after that the stage is forgotten in all but in the talk-heavy story. The film omits (regrettably) a hilarious sex scene in a darkroom\, as well as (mercifully) the endless discussion of Arnold’s lover Ed’s ‘problematic’ bisexuality. The adaptation also invents a (rather sweet) first-meeting scene between Arnold and partner David. \nA ‘torch song’ is a melodramatic rendition of a love story\, romance on an epic scale\, and our story is concerned with the five loves in torch-song singer Arnold Beckoff’s life: Ed\, Alan\, his son\, his mother\, and himself. This is a positive portrait of a gay person who respects himself and demands respect\, from the first second of the film to the last. Shocking to think how rare this is in the stories others have told us and we have told ourselves. Arnold’s whip-tongued queen\, maddeningly closeted lover Ed\, dangerously-perfect partner Alan\, Arnold and Alan’s lovable-rogue foster-son David\, and Arnold’s dark tornado of a mother… all sound like excruciating clichés on paper\, but in fact they feel so real that you will think you are standing in that dressing room\, that alley-way\, that cemetery\, that cabin in the country\, and that sitting-room. Both the play and the film are about parenting too –about the trick of breaking with the past\, knowing you are cursed to drag it along with you. This is the conundrum of film adaptations themselves\, and if you wish to be enlightened\, look no further than the great Anne Bancroft as the ‘ma’ of professional drag artist Arnold. He may be one of a kind\, but is it a coincidence that she comes across as the ultimate drag queen? \n
