SUMMARY:Lighthouse Cinema Classics
DESCRIPTION:This January\, The Lighthouse Cinema has a great line up scheduled\, with two undisputed classics sticking out. David Lynch’s strange and dreamy neo-noir masterpiece\, Mullholland Drive will be showing on the 20th. One of Lynch’s most praised work\, the film follows two women navigating through a seductive yet unsettling showcase of Hollywood. Its hypnotic dreamlike style is sure to stick with you long after you leave the theater. \nFor fans of the French New Wave\, Jean-Luc Godard’s classic\, Breathless will be playing on the 25th. Known for its jump cuts\, timeless existential aesthetics\, and well balanced blend of action\, romance and noir\, the film is a prime example of New Wave at its best. Both these movies absolutely belong in a theater so these rare showings are well worth catching. \nThe Lighthouse\, Jan 20th – 25th

SUMMARY:Much Ado About Dying
DESCRIPTION:This poignant\, moving documentary from filmmaker Simon Chambers chronicles his journey from India to London to care for his Uncle David\, a retired bohemian gay actor\, and his unbreakable\, anarchic spirit. \nDealing with the complicated questions of how to care for our elderly\, and how to help them die the best death they can\, it’s by turns hilarious and heartbreaking\, while also touching on many important subjects. \nCovering a range of important issues from loneliness to the roles of carers\, this delicate film is both a beautiful work in itself and an important dispatch\, as well as an ode and celebration. \nA Q&A session with the film’s Director Simon Chambers takes place at the IFI following the screening at 6.30pm on Friday May 10th\, when the film goes on general release. For bookings see ifi.ie \nQ&A sessions are also scheduled to take place at Lighthouse Cinema\, Dublin on Sunday May 12th and at Omniplex Rathmines\, Dublin on Friday May 17th.

SUMMARY:A Sod State - Eoghan Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Eoghan Ryan’s film installation\, A Sod State\, examines themes of religion\, state power\, and spectatorship through the lens of the Northern Irish Troubles. Showing  for the first time in Ireland\, the film “unravels a world of untrustworthy narration\, wandering sounds\, strobing imagery\, and disarray. It is a tale of a corrupted\, often censored\, surreal\, and confused state of affairs\, in which an inner demagogue is manifested. This creature\, or puppet\, is not quite god\, not quite devil\, and performs binary contradictions of class\, faith\, identity\, and borders; private\, public\, and political.” WIth the opening reception planned for April 12th\, at 6pm\, this deep\, thought provoking work looks set to continue The Complex’s reputation for Stellar Programming in the heart of Smithfield. \nThe Gallery\, Arran St East | D07 YY97  \n13th – 27th April \nthecomplex.ie

SUMMARY:An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl)
DESCRIPTION:Seachtain na Gaeilge sees an opportunity to see An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) with a special screening at The Chester Beatty Library. The award-winning film\, set in rural Ireland in the early 1980s\, tells the story of nine-year-old Cáit who is sent to spend the summer with a relative\, Eibhlín\, and her husband Seán. With her neglectful parents and an overcrowded\, chaotic home\, Cáit is a cautious and watchful child. Everything slowly changes that summer: unlike her parents’ farm\, this one is orderly and well-maintained\, while Eibhlín and Seán are attentive and thoughtful – even if Seán is somewhat distant at first. They offer her routine and most of all\, loving care\, which helps the girl to open up and enjoy her childhood. But like most good things in life\, this too must come to an end… \n \n13A (2022)\, 94 minutes. \nIrish with English subtitles. FREE\, no booking required. \nRead our review of An Cailín Ciúin here

SUMMARY:Sail We Must - The Sea Story of Andrew Weatherall and an Irish fisherman
DESCRIPTION:In rural county Cork\, a lone fisherman met a weary traveller who was on his way to a gig. They soon began to exchange stories\, namely tales of the sea. During their conversation\, the seafarer shared a sentiment that would stay with his passenger forever: “fail we may\, sail we must.” \nThe Tenth Man presents Sail We Must directed by Grizzly\, a short film telling the beautiful story of the chance meeting between iconic artist Andrew Weatherall and fisherman Gerard Sheehy. The 10-minute film explores how the words of wisdom Sheehy shared with Weatherall changed his path and went on to influence another generation of musicians and creatives. The film also features Cian Ó Cíobháin who was instrumental in finding Gerard\, as well as Andrew’s close friend and collaborator Sean Johnston. \n“We can’t thank those closest to Andrew enough for allowing us to create this film\,” says Eric Davidson of The Tenth Man. “This is a celebration of club culture\, dance music\, and the cultural ties that bind us all together. But more importantly\, it’s a celebration of a once in a generation artist\, Andrew Weatherall.” \nSail We Must is screening February 16th in Dublin’s The Sugar Club\, featuring a live discussion between Cian Ó Cíobháin\, Johnny Moy\, and Billy Scurry about Andrew’s links to Ireland\, as well as a DJ set from Billy Scurry inspired by Andrew’s life. All proceeds from the evening will go to Andrew’s family and the charities that meant the most to him. \nFor those who can’t make the Dublin launch\, the film will be premiering live online on Mixmag on February 17th. \n@tenthmanhello \n@grizzly directors \nthetenthman.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Bram Stoker Fest: I am NOT Legend
DESCRIPTION:Cult horror film Night of the Living Dead undergoes a radical reworking by Italian artist and filmmaker Andrea Mastrovito. \nCreating a screenplay composed entirely of quotes from famous films\, books and other sources; it calls to mind Christian Marclay’s acclaimed The Clock where he looped a 24-hour video montage of scenes from film and television that feature clocks or timepieces. \n \nMastrovito augments the film’s original frames to create a completely new story arc. His characters use the words and gestures of others to propel his narrative forward\, which Mastrovito likens to how people communicate today via social media and memes – reusing and recycling quotes and images from other sources to comment on their own experiences. \nThe accompanying score has been created by Matthew Nolan and Stephen Shannon. \nI am NOT Legend 9pm each night of the festival\, access link sent with booking\, €5 \nBram Stoker Festival runs from Friday October 30 to Monday November 2 \nFull programme details at bramstokerfestival.com

SUMMARY:Film Highlight: When the Snow Falls I'll Be Gone
DESCRIPTION:Irish folk duo Cry Monster Cry were just about to premiere their new documentary\, When the Snow Falls I’ll Be Gone\, on March 14th when the Coronavirus started to wreak havoc with cultural events. Nonetheless\, in the spirit of solidarity\, the band have decided to debut the documentary on March 20th at 7pm on their website and social media channels.\n\nThe film tells the story of Irish brothers Richie & Jamie Martin’s journey up the swiss alps\, instruments on their backs\, to play a concert in a cabin 2\,200 metres above sea level. The journey to the venue (a traditional Swiss mountain cabin dating back to 1895 that sits on the edge of a cliff) saw them hiking for 10 hours\, instruments on their backs. Directed and produced by Elijah Egan\, the film is a wonderful insight into how far artists will go for their art\, something that’s particularly relevant in these trying times.

SUMMARY:Our Planet
DESCRIPTION:Happenings\, in association with the Dublin Climate Action Regional Office (CARO)\, Dublin City Council and Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council\,\, are organising two free outdoor screenings of the Netflix documentary ‘Our Planet’ to highlight the need for urgent action on climate change and to support the upcoming Global Strike for Climate Action. The screenings of the acclaimed David Attenborough documentary will be powered using battery and solar technology. \n‘Our Planet’ – Powered by the Sun will take place on Friday 13th September in Merrion Square and Saturday 14th September in Blackrock Park\, Dublin. The screenings have been organised one week prior to the Global Strike for Climate Action where millions of young people will take to the streets around the world demanding an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nPeter O’Brien\, Director of Happenings is passionate about climate change and insisting on action: \n“The evidence is clear –  surface temperatures are setting new heat records\, the Amazon rainforest is on fire\, there are record breaking ice melts and sea levels are rising at an alarming rate. We are at crisis point and simply must act\, the world needs to unite on this issue or we are fighting our way to extinction. \nWe have no diesel generator for these events\, we want to spread the message that is no need to use fossil fuels to the extent that we do. Scientists have proved that we have over half a decade to halve our emissions in order to avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change on our food supply\, national security\, global health and extreme weather. We must act NOW”. \nDavid Dodd\, Regional Co-ordinator of the Dublin CARO says “The Dublin CARO is delighted to work with Happenings on this public engagement initiative\, by hosting these family friendly\, outdoor screenings\, in two of Dublin’s scenic public parks. Set up as an initiative of the Irish Government\, the CARO works closely with the four Dublin local authorities on developing and implementing climate actions at local level\, including active engagement with the citizens of Dublin on addressing climate change\, in both mitigation and adaptation areas.’ ” \nOur Planet – Powered by the Sun free events will open at 7:30pm with screenings from 8:15pm. Refreshments will be available and these are leave no trace events. Further details are available on www.happenings.ie \nAbout ‘Our Planet’ \nOur Planet is the most important documentary of the year. An eight part documentary series\, it focuses on the breadth of the diversity of habitats around the world\, from the remote Arctic wilderness and mysterious deep oceans to the vast landscapes of Africa and diverse jungles of South America. \nThis series\, narrated by David Attenborough\, addresses issues of conservation while featuring these disparate animals in their respective home regions\, and has been noted for its greater focus on humans’ impact on the environment than traditional nature documentaries; centering around how climate change impacts all living creatures.

SUMMARY:Film: Our Battle of Images
DESCRIPTION:This programme of rarely-seen films uses alternative stylistic approaches to explore the Northern Ireland conflict. The images that have come to define the conflict have been primarily those of television and fiction: news reports\, talking head documentaries\, gritty crime movies and human-interest dramas. However\, there is another visual history of the conflict preserved in the lesser-known work of a diverse group of international\, politically militant and formally experimental films of the 1970s and 1980s. \nWhile most could be classed as documentarians\, their innovative formal approaches discourage any complacent acceptance of the ‘real’\, and often highlight how images of Northern Ireland have been manipulated and weaponised by the state and the media. Coming from various radical and artistic milieus in New York\, London and Paris\, the filmmakers collaborated with locals eager for representation outside the narrow frames of Irish and British media. \nIrish Film Institute\, Saturday April 6 to Tuesday April 30 \nifi.ie/our-battle-of-images/

SUMMARY:Everyday Life in a Syrian Village
DESCRIPTION:Considered a landmark in the history of Arab cinema and banned in Syria to this day\, the documentary Everyday Life in a Syrian Village (1974) is director Omar Amiralay’s critique of the Syrian government’s agricultural and land reforms in the mid-twentieth century\, and influential on the making of Manna’s Wild Relatives. \n \nOmar Amiralay (1944 — 5 February 2011) was a Syrian documentary film director and prominent civil society activist. He is noted for the strong political criticism in his films and played a prominent role in the events of the Damascus Spring of 2000. Born in Damascus in 1944\, Amiralay studied in Paris at Théâtre de la Ville between 1966-7 and later at La Fémis\, before returning to Syria in 1970. He thus had a different artistic formation from the majority of Syrian film-makers\, who studied in the Soviet Union or in Eastern Europe. His films include a trilogy of documentaries concerning the Tabqa Dam on the Euphrates. The first\, Film Essay on the Euphrates Dam (1970)\, is a tribute to Syria’s greatest development project\, but the second and third take a more critical approach. Everyday Life in a Syrian Village (1974) shows the dam’s ambiguous impact on the lives of ordinary people in a nearby village\, and portrays their relationship with the authorities\, seen as distant and disconnected from them. Amiralay revisited the region in 2003 with A Flood in Baath Country\, which contains trenchant political criticism (it had the working title Fifteen reasons why I hate the Baath Party).
