SUMMARY:Festival of History
DESCRIPTION:We often hear George Santayana’s line being trotted out about those who cannot remember the past being condemned to repeat it. George is right. So take this chance to deep dive into history. You can get up to speed on The Romanovs before Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner makes them hot stuff on Amazon Prime. There’s talks on Karl Marx and his Irish connections\, the sinking of the RMS Leinster whose centenary falls on October 10th\, Hitler’s women pilots in the Third Reich\, women in Hollywood in the ‘30s\, as well as a star turn by our very own Brian McMahon — he of the Brand New Retro parish\, p14 — whose talk ‘The Inevitable Seduction (Ireland and Pop Culture)’ will take place in Drumcondra Library on Thursday September 27.

SUMMARY:Spike
DESCRIPTION:Spike\, Dublin’s alternative cello festival\, returns for its second outing. \nTaking place Friday 9th -Sunday 11th February in venues across Dublin\, the 2018 programme will present unique events with some of the most talented and exciting cello artists (& friends) from home and abroad. \nAmong the highlights of the festival will be a series of performances taking place each night at the Workman’s Club\, featuring a line-up of stellar and fascinating artists. \nThe festival will open on the evening of Friday 9th February with performances by Lioba Petrie and Laura Moody. Moody is a wildly alternative cellist\, vocalist and avant-garde singer-songwriter who creates emotive songs that reveal a multitude of influences and which inhabit a unique space between the contemporary avant-garde\, classical music\, experimental pop and singer-songwriter traditions. Festival organiser cellist Petrie will be presenting a brand new project\, performing a live film score to screen from one of Ireland’s most exciting filmmakers. \nThe Saturday night concert will feature US/Albanian artist\, composer/cellist Rubin Kodheli\, a celebrated\, versatile\, genre-transcending creative rebel most recently seen by Dublin audiences performing with Laurie Anderson at the NCH in spring 2017. Rubin has made a name for himself performing with Roberta Flack\, Henry Threadgill\, Wyclef Jean\, Norah Jones\, Vampire Weekend\, Dave Douglas\, Makoto Ozone\, Wadada Leo Smith and Joan Labarabara. At this concert\, he will be performing with two ensembles – Blues in Space and the Kodheli  Cello Quartet. Blues in Space\, made up of Kodheli on cello  and Garrett Brown on drums\, is quickly rising to the forefront of a new avant-rock movement\, offering audiences a chaotic and intense musical experience. As Lucid Culture wrote\, “Bands like Blues in Space make a good battering ram: they destroy boundaries.” Kodheli will also be performing with a specially assembled cello quartet of Kate Ellis\, Laura Moody and Ben Cashell who will join Kodheli to perform a selection of his cello quartet music. \nThe festival’s closing performance on the Sunday night “Cello Voce” will feature Cello Ireland with leading Irish cellist- songwriters Mary Barnecutt\, Aleka Potenga\, Kevin Murphy and Anna-Mieke Bishop with special guest Liam O’ Maonlai\, a singer whose musical journey has brought him all over the world\, exploring the music of Africa\, India\, America\, Australia and Japan. This unique event\, will celebrate the cello\, the voice\, the Irish tradition and an amalgamation of styles and compositions\, as the assembled musicians perform original material in new settings. \nThe festival will have events for all ages\, with workshops in schools with Rubin Kodheli\, an inspirational improvisational workshop led by Nashville cellist Zan Berry\, and an All Ages Gig with Zan Berry and Irish cello player and singer Naomi Berrill. \nThe Hugh Lane Gallery will be home to free events across the weekend\, with the Spike festival programming the Gallery’s regular Sunday Concert at 12 noon\, and a “Cellinstallation” of Irish cellists performing solo in the Gallery foyer over the weekend. \nAnd for something a bit different\, Kitty Maguire will be leading her “Yocella” class – a blissful “yin” yoga class accompanied by cello. \nFestival organisers\, cellists Lioba Petrie and Mary Barnecutt\, are looking forward to presenting their exciting programme for 2018\, after the 2017 edition attracted audiences from as far afield as the UK and the US.

SUMMARY:TradFest
DESCRIPTION:Expanding the idea of trad to somewhat stretched limits at times\, TradFest has nonetheless thankfully mushroomed in scale over recent years. Martha Wainwright\, Judy Collins\, Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny\, This Is How We Fly\, Wallis Bird\, The New Folk with Ailbhe Reddy are among the mash of old and new. We’re going to google Socks in the Frying Pan once these words are written. This year TradFest also pays a musical tribute to the legendary Eamonn Campbell (The Dubliners) with all proceeds from the concert at St Michan’s Church will go to Coolmine\, a charity dedicated to overcoming addiction. There’s family concerts\, free gigs and a screening of Robert Manthoulis’s The Irish Or The Memory of A People which examined Irish traditional music in 1971.

SUMMARY:The David Bowie Festival
DESCRIPTION:John Brereton on what David Bowie means to him and the festival he has created in his honour. \nTell us about the origins of the Bowie Fest? \nThe Grand Social had hosted the Bowie Birthday Bash for 5 years running with Rebel Rebel headlining so for 2016\, myself and Peter Quinn (lead singer of Rebel Rebel)\, decided to expand the bash into a ‘festival’ with extra events over the weekend in the venue. We got lucky when Bowie’s guitarist Gerry Leonard said he would be in town so it was brilliant to have that direct connection to Bowie guesting at the first Festival. When I was 18 I went to a Bowie Convention in London and it blew me away so Ive always wanted to do something like that in Dublin. With Bowie’s death the following day the Festival exploded into a 6 night multi-faceted\, multi-venue event within 12 months so its all happened a lot quicker than planned. \nWhat did Bowie mean to you growing up? Any stand out memories? \nI swapped my first illegal six pack of beer for a mates Hunky Dory album on Halloween night in 1981 and never looked back. I was consumed by his music and the lyrical imagery and cultural references within his songs made me delve into what made Bowie tick. It was a magical journey; his influence opened so many doors and I just loved how he brought theatre and sexual playfulness into rock n roll. I saw him live first in 83 (Serious Moonlight Tour) and in The Baggot Inn (with Tin Machine) but of all the times I saw him live his Olympia gigs were untouchable.  \nThe inaugural Bowie fest concluded the same night he passed away. What was your reaction when you heard the news? \nI remember leaving Gerry to the hotel on the Sunday night and he said he’d tell David how great it all went so I was on cloud nine. My four-year–old son woke me up the next morning with the news and it was just total shock. After living Bowie for the weekend it just felt so surreal. I was on the radio for most of the day being interviewed so I didn’t see any news reports and had no time to process what had happened. We hastily organised a vigil in The Grand Social that night for all the fans (which Gerry also attended) so the day and night was full on busy. It was only when I got home that night and turned on the TV that all the emotion came flooding out. \n\n\n\n\nYou have designer Jonathan Barnbrook in conversation and a screening of the acclaimed V&A exhibition as part of the programme. Is Bowie’s creative output and legacy is a limitless source of inspiration? \nMost definitely. His influence on music\, fashion and how we present ourselves as artists will be hard to surpass.  \nFavourite song? Album? Album cover? \nSweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise). Hunky Dory. Low. (though these could change tomorrow 🙂  \n\nFurther details – http://www.dublinbowiefestival.ie \n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMThz7eQ6K0

SUMMARY:The Future
DESCRIPTION:Michael caught up with Will Hudson\, founder of It’s Nice That\, ahead of The Future which takes place in the RDS this November.\n\n\n\nMichael: It’s Nice That is a recognised ‘go to’ for so many in the creative industry in terms of updates and insights. It started out as a college blog and obviously became a life-changing experience in the process leading to your agency\, conference\, print publication and other offshoots. Is timing clearly of the essence in this instance? Would you encourage or dissuade a student who wanted to create an equivalent these days?\n\n\n\nWill: Always go for it\, make it happen\, put it out there! We had no idea what It’s Nice That would turn into and if anyone has a similar idea the only way to really test it is to get it out in the world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael: How significant is quality engagement with the site over clicks? What are the growth challenges you foresee?\n\n\n\n\nWill: We look at a number of things to monitor how we’re doing. We’re very lucky to have a very loyal readership and we’re in it for the long term so we would always choose engagement over clicks. One of the ongoing challenges is converting clicks to engagement\, when someone visits the site for the first time how do we best explain who we are and what we do so they hopefully stick around and visit again.\n\n\n\n\n\nFor our growth targets we’ve just hit a big one and it’s about showing consistency before resetting and aiming for something bigger. I think you have to ask yourself why we keep aiming for bigger and bigger audiences\, we can still run a successful business with the size of audience we have and enjoy doing it in the process. Sometimes it’s felt like setting bigger and bigger audience targets puts unnecessary pressure on what we’re doing. If there’s clearly an opportunity to grow the audience we should go for it but we should also make sure we’re providing great content for our current readership and not lose sight of that.\n\n\n\n\nMichael: Has the monetisation of It’s Nice That mostly come from brands seeking out your agency and reach?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWill: I think it’s come from us looking at everything we do and constantly questioning why we do it and what the other opportunities are. We look at the efficiency of those things and the role they play within the group. We’ve had the confidence to stop some things that weren’t working and focus on things that were. There has been a natural knock on effect that Anyways gets from being in the same group as It’s Nice That but it’s been winning work on it’s own merits for a few years now. The audience and reach we have on It’s Nice That naturally makes us an attractive proposition for brands to want to work with us.\n\n\n\nMichael: You made a failed effort to raise funds for your Lecture in Progress project last year but pressed ahead with its creation. Where is it at now and what lessons did you learn from the experience?\n\n\n\nWill: The Kickstarter was great. It taught us very quickly we had got a few things wrong but the overwhelming response was positive and we realised we had to tweak a few things in order to make it happen. Six months after we made those changes\, hired a small team and we have a very clear focus of inspiring and informing the next generation of creatives by proving practical advice and insight into day to day industry and the breadth of jobs that exist.\n\n\n\nMichael: Is there a conference talk which stands out in your memory for its message and delivery?\n\n\n\nWill: The photographer Giles Duley gave a talk at our first Here conference in 2012 that bought many people to tears and was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever witnessed. In the space of 30 minutes he proves there’s no excuse to do something you believe in\, no matter the obstacles you face.\n\n\n\nGiles Duley\n\n\n\n\nMichael: What does The Future hold for you guys?\n\n\n\nWill: Continuing to enable creativity to thrive!\n\n\nCheck out Will’s event online here\, which takes place Friday at 7:30 p.m. on the Studio Stage.
