SUMMARY:Bram Stoker Festival
DESCRIPTION:Bram’s back\, bitchez! Carrying the placard for spooky rights throughout the city\, this fright fest has Night Watch as its centrepiece down in Grand Canal Dock. This atmospheric and darkly theatrical installation\, presented by Lantern Company\, will see a ghostly ship summoned from the dark\, swathed in fog and foreboding lights\, accompanied by an eerie\, maritime forest of beings and bodies arising from the depths. \nElsewhere\, Sounds of Wood on Muscle (St Ann’s Church\, where Bram Stoker married Florence Balcombe in 1878) restates Orson Welles’s iconic 1938 radio play exploring how technology has changed our relationship to imagination. \n \nSéance is a 15-minute experience for an audience of 20 inside a sealed shipping container on Wolfe Tone Square. The contagious nature of fear and potency of superstition forms the core of dark treat. \nInstaTerror is a groundbreaking online event which harnesses modern technology to tell an ancient story of horror. Anyone with a smartphone and a sense of humour can follow this terrifying haunting as it unfolds over the course of a week. As tension builds and the body count rises\, this macabre\, made-for-millennials adventure will culminate in a shocking climax during the Festival. \nGet stoked for Stoker! \nFor more check out our Five of The Best picks for the weekend\, and our interview with Festival Co-Directors Tom Lawlor and Maria Schweppe) \nVarious locations\, Friday October 25 to Monday October 28 \nbramstokerfestival.com

SUMMARY:Open House Dublin
DESCRIPTION:It’s our annual ‘through the keyhole’ moment where we get to snoop and marvel at what lies behind the doors of this city. And while it’s stacked with access to fantastic public and private spaces\, the most important event is The Big Debate on Friday. The theme is ‘City in Motion’ which according to Open House “allows us to question the sort of city we want Dublin to be.” And this really has never come at a more crunch time with the city no longer affordable for many and creative spaces being squeezed out in favour of hotels and student accommodation. Do we want a soulless identikit city which will tourists will skip in time to come or hold on to the vestiges of what makes us unique? Could the future incarnation of this event be called Closed Doors? Now is the time to have your say and get informed. \nThe Big Debate\, Trinity Business School\, 41 Pearse St\, D2\, Friday\, 6:30pm – 8pm \nOpen House Dublin\, various locations\, Friday October 11 to Sunday October 13 \nFree tours but booking required for some \nopenhousedublin.com

SUMMARY:Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Arts and Human Rights festival showcases and highlights the extraordinary work of human rights defenders in Ireland and around the world – past and present – and the role of the arts and artists in promoting human rights today. This 11-day runs until September 29 at a range of venues including the Samuel Beckett Theatre\, Science Gallery Dublin and dlr Mill Theatre Dundrum. \nEvents include Escape Routes and Freedom Trails – European Solidarity between Nations  (19 September 7.30pm\, Samuel Beckett Theatre) offers theatre\, film and panel discussions celebrating and remembering extraordinary stories of Irish and European men and women involved in the resistance and in  ‘escape lines’: secret World War II networks set up to assist Allied soldiers and citizens leave Nazi occupied territory during WWII. Today\, the escape lines are remembered in Europe and beyond as ‘Freedom Trails’. Hear about courageous Belgian woman and human rights defender Andrée de Jongh\, who set up the Comet Line that saved over 800 Allied service men. Listen to the stories of courageous Irish men and women active during WWII including Katherine Anne Mc Carthy\, Mary Cummins\, Catherine Crean\, Margaret Kelly and Samuel Beckett.  The evening explores stories of solidarity from WWII and how European citizens can come together to promote democracy\, equality and peace today. \nArtists and speakers for this unique event include Mary Moynihan\, theatre and film-maker and Artistic Director of Smashing Times; Belgian director Frédérique Lecomte from Theater & Reconciliation presenting her extraordinary work from Belgium and the Congo; John Morgan\, Dublin lawyer and co-founder of the Basque Pyrenees Freedom Trails’ Association (BPFTA) and one of the key people to raise awareness of the involvement of Irish men and women in the Resistance during WWII; Eneko Aizpurua\, Award Winning Writer\, Basque Country\, and Trinity graduate Seán Binder from Cork\, an Aid Worker who spent over 100 days in a Greek jail arising from his work volunteering with refugees. \nDuring the afternoon of 19 September\, from 3-5pm\, the festival is  delighted to welcome Frédérique Lecomte to Ireland from Belgium. Frédérique is Director of the Belgian company Theater & Reconciliation and will present a full-length workshop and talk about her extraordinary work and unique Method for Theatrical Practice in Conflict Zones that she has developed using creative processes to promote conflict resolution and reconciliation in the Congo. \nMusical highlights include Don’t See Any Lines by Cork singer/songwriter Hilary Bow\, featuring Hilary and Liam Ó’Maonlaí on vocals. This song was released as a single on World Refugee Day\, 20 June 2019. The lyrics are inspired by Hilary’s friendship with Kurdish refugees and by working with people who had arrived in Ireland seeking refuge. The song is used as a call to end the direct provision system in Ireland and implement a more humane system for people arriving here. \nUntil September 29

SUMMARY:Love Sensation
DESCRIPTION:The Mother(ship) and mcd roll out a new festival to ensure another large scale splash of Pride before the summer sun sets. This two-day venture is bedecked in retro pop stripes with noughties favs Lily Allen\, Kelis and The Gossip headlining along with Clean Bandit. There’s a George stage bringing the drag fab and a dance section with solid loveens Horse Meat Disco and Honey Dijon. Crowd-pleasing potential\, even if it lacks contemporary edge in its line-up.

SUMMARY:We've Only Just Begun
DESCRIPTION:Second out for this three-day festival featuring 26 acts across two stages. Wyvern Lingo\, Pillow Queens\, Roe and Soda Blonde are the headliners but we’ll be marking our curiosity cards by catching the likes of Lydia Ford\, a Brooklyn-based Irish pop artist and Meath duo Elkin (pictured). It also features Fears\, who featured in our music therapy feature in our last edition. We’ve Only Just Begun are also eschewing a foghorn push around the fact that it is an all-female line-up. We can only hope this is the start of a new norm too.

SUMMARY:Wine 'n' Cheese
DESCRIPTION:Can you brie-lieve it? You’re suddenly middle-aged and middle-class with expendable cash. Well\, stop in your tracks because there are few better marriages to suit you than wine and cheese. And when it comes in festival format\, you can enjoy the company of likeminded folk who are borderline smug. Explore all the voguish wine trends – organic\, orange\, natural and biodynamic – with expert insights from the likes of the acclaimed Green Man Wines. And while we may not be noted for our wine produce\, when it comes to cheese we are well mature in the stakes.  \nThere’s cheesemaking with Tom Burgess (Coolatin Cheese) and making ‘The Perfect Cheese Toastie’ with Kevin Powell (Loose Canon). There will be a daily Cracker Challenge (eat three cream crackers to win a prize!) and Grape Expectations Challenge where competitors have to make as much wine as they can (with their feet!). Add to that Cheesy Singalong Social\, Sing For Your Dinner karaoke\, The Dublin Ukulele Collective\, Trinity Orchestra do Abba\, R’n’Brie special from Holla Back and Easy Singles speed dating.

SUMMARY:Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:We must admit we’ve been somewhat conflicted by Pride of late. The embracing of Queer culture by the mainstream has not been without its pitfalls\, most noticeably the piggybacking of it by brands. The parade spectacle has been somewhat diminished by the proliferation of bland buses passing by telling us tech company A is down with equality and film company B wants to flog a forthcoming release. Having Madonna playing from a soundsystem while people in t-shirts dance on the roof of a bus is not the essence of a good Pride. \nSolution? Brands fund the creation of float spectacles with edge and competition\, brands fund community groups and outreach programmes to bring the message and the fun. In other words\, brands get out of our faces. Here’s hoping the restoration of its route down the O’Connell Street artery marks the beginning of the return of a flamboyant Pride with a meaningful sense of pride\, place and bite. \nAnnouncing artist and activist Will St Leger as its Grand Marshall this year is a very welcome decision adding meaning over celeb rainbow dashing. \nParade route is Parnell Square to Merrion Square

SUMMARY:Bloomsday Festival
DESCRIPTION:When James Joyce’s Ulysses first came out\, many found it obscene and unreadable. \nJoyce responded if\, “If Ulysses isn’t fit to read\, then life isn’t fit to live.” From these disreputable beginnings\, Bloomsday has become a street festival celebrating Joyce’s novel and its main characters Molly and Leopold Bloom. SUMMARY:Vantastival

We’ve marked down King Kong Company\, Lisa O’Neill and The Young Folk on our cards though Just Mustard should prove the biggest buzz off the back of their debut and Choice nomination. And the marvellous maverick Jinx Lennon is a must see anytime of day or night. Pull up with or without your bumper.

SUMMARY:Music Current 2019
DESCRIPTION:MUSIC CURRENT is back bigger and better for 2019. Returning to Smock Alley Theatre this April\, Dublin’s annual contemporary music festival expands its run dates and events\, to showcase more of the best of new Irish and international contemporary electronic music\, to Irish audiences. This unique four-day event runs from 10–13 April\, hosting a four-day festival of concerts\, panel discussions\, composer talks\, and a special music commission for artists. \nProduced in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre and supported by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council\, MUSIC CURRENT is now established in its fourth year\, and the festival offers a unique blend of electronic performance and provides a much-needed platform for the newest contemporary electronic music rarely seen in Ireland. \nThis year’s festival has a decidedly theatrical flavour featuring Steven Takasugi’s hilarious and unnerving ‘Sideshow’\, a concert-length masterwork for ensemble and electronics\, in which the players\, Ensemble Tzara from Switzerland\, ‘perform’ in a decidedly giddy theatrical sense. Sideshow is a humorous and eerie meditation on virtuosity\, freak shows\, entertainment\, and spectacle\, and after sold-out shows and critical acclaim across America and Europe\, Music Current is delighted to present the Irish premiere of what will surely become one the defining works of early 21st century music. The theatrical theme continues with Swiss trio Retro Disco who take inspiration from Dadaist aesthetics and create absurdist performances\, and perform a new commission by Irish composer Karen Power. \nThe festival opens with a double-bill programme: Sweeney Lives! featuring three major ‘radiophonic’ work by Irish electronic music pioneer Frank Corcoran; and German music collective Stock11\, one of the most thought provoking music groups performing today. \n \nRetro Disco will also perform a new commission by Argentinian composer Patricia Martinez in a special concert of new international works developed during the festival by participating composers\, one of whom will receive this year’s Music Current Commission of €2\,500. \nWelcoming many new international artists who will perform in Ireland for the first time\, and curating this exciting experimental mix of new music\, Dublin Sound Lab is delighted to host another cutting edge MUSIC CURRENT for 2019. \n  \nABOUT THE 2019 LINE UP: \nFRANK CORCORAN\, In Conversation and SWEENEY LIVES!   \n \nSWEENEY LIVES! by Irish composer Frank Corcoran offers three ‘tape’ music masterworks that will be presented in Ireland for the first time in surround sound and as a complete body of work\, in a single concert. Each of these works reveals Corcoran’s far-reaching vision of a distant\, multi-layered\, mythic past which is rendered so deftly here in late 20th century technology. \nWritten in the years spanning the peak of Corcoran’s creative output\, these pieces are in a consciously radiophonic style and\, when heard together in a seamless concert performance\, they accumulate a coherence and forcefulness of argument\, and bring to life Corcoran’s mythological landscape\, littered with visual metaphors\, in a true ‘cinema for the ear’. \n“Corcoran’s Musical Mass is a furious symbiosis of polyphonic liturgical sound” – Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung \nFRANK CORCORAN\, In Conversation\, Contemporary Music Centre\, 19 Fishamble Street\, Temple Bar\, Dublin \n Wednesday 10 April | 6pm | Free \nSWEENEY LIVES Wednesday 10 April | 7pm | €15/10  Smock Alley Theatre\, Exchange Street Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin \n  \nSHERIFFS LOVE SONGS \nSHERRIFS LOVE SONGS by STOCK11 displays the eclectic approaches and techniques of this German collective of composers and performers. They share an aesthetic position that accommodates everyday activities and materials and contemporary practices from beyond the usual musical world within their compositions and performances. \nIn this concert\, three of the group’s composer/performer members – Michael Maierhof\, Christoph Ogiermann and Hannes Seidl – make their first appearance in Ireland performing highlight works from the group. \n“One of the most original composers working today and a master manipulator of the sonic properties of plastic” – van-magazine.com \nWednesday 10 April | 8pm | €15/10 Smock Alley Theatre\, Exchange Street Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin \n  \nSIDESHOW \n \nSIDESHOW is the Irish premier of American composer of electro-acoustic music\, Steven Takasugi‘s\, concert-length music theatre masterwork for chamber ensemble. \nBased on the dark sideshows of Coney Island’s amusement parks in the early part of the 20th century\, SIDESHOW is a meditation on virtuosity\, freak shows\, entertainment\, spectacle\, business\, and the sacrifices one makes to survive in this world. \n “There is an unrepentant nakedness in Takasugi’s performances that suggests an intensely honest viewing of the world…. Crippling engrossing SIDESHOW…” –  fociarts.com \nThursday 11 April | 8pm | €15/10 Smock Alley Theatre\, Exchange Street Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin  \n  \nWHOSE MUSIC? Panel Discussion\n \nWHOSE MUSIC? is an open public panel discussion\, where invited guest panellists\, participant composers and public share thoughts on current composition trends\, performance practice\, critical perspectives\, and new directions in music making. This year invited panellists\, including Dr Róisín Loughran (School of Business\, UCD)\, consider the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on music composition and how future developments impinge on aesthetic considerations and audience reception. \n \nThe discussion is open and accessible to public participation\, and contributions are welcome from the audience too. The event is hosted by the Contemporary Music Centre\, Ireland’s archive and resource centre for new music\, and will be moderated by Evonne Ferguson\, Director of CMC / presenter of RTE Lyric FM’s Daybreak Show. \nThis public event is free to attend and all are welcome. MUSIC CURRENT encourage people to indicate their attendance by emailing rsvp@cmc.ie. \nContemporary Music Centre\, 19 Fishamble Street\, Temple Bar\, Dublin Friday 12 April | 6pm | Free \n  \nRETRO DISCO\n \n \nMaking their Irish debut\, Swiss trio RETRO DISCO (horn\, cello\, synthesizer and electronics)\, showcase new music from Switzerland written specially for the group. The programme also includes the premier of a new commission by Irish composer Karen Power. \nRETRO DISCO create a hybrid between electronic and acoustic sounds. Their repertoire includes everything from absurd performances to sound installations\, microtonal sine waves\, synthetic sounds of the ’80s\, or dismembered and dismembered samples. \n“It’s Dynamite\, it’s Retro Disco!” – Robert Ashley (American contemporary composer) \nFriday 12 April | 8pm | €15/10 Smock Alley Theatre\, Exchange Street Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin \n  \nCURRENTS   \nCURRENTS – Retro Disco Trio perform new works for horn\, cello\, synthesizer and electronics by participant composers\, selected following the annual Music Current ‘call for participation’. A regular and unique feature of Music Current festival\, this concert offers a rare chance to hear the most original voices in contemporary composition from around the world showcasing their work in Dublin. \nOne of the participating composers in this programme will be offered a commission to prepare a new work for Music Current 2020. This concert will also feature the premiere of a new work by Argentinian Patricia Martinez – recipient of Music Current 2018 commission – written especially for RETRO DISCO. \nAlso including works by: \nClaire Fitch\nAlessandro Perini\nDavid Bremner\nSeán Ó Dálaigh\nWeston Olencki\nLuke Smyth\nMaya Verlak \n  \nMusic Current Connects \nMUSIC CURRENT 2019 introduces a new audience engagement event called Music Current Connects\, which runs in conjunction with each concert at this year’s festival. Music Current Connects is an informal networking event aimed at audiences\, composers\, and musicians who are invited to join the festival team for discussions after each concert. If you’re a composer\, you can pitch ideas to Dublin Sound Lab; if you’re a performer\, you can find collaborators; if you’re a concert-goer\, you can discuss the evening’s music with the festival composers. Everyone is invited to come along and meet up with the festival team after the show – no ticket required\, just come along and introduce yourself or email info@dublinsoundlab.ie.  \nSaturday 13 April | 8pm | €15/10 Smock Alley Theatre\, Exchange Street Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin \n  \nSMOCK ALLEY THEATRE\, Exchange Street Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin \nBox Office – Tel: 01 677 0014 / www.smockalley.com \nFurther info at: http://www.musiccurrent.ie \nFACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/dublinsoundlab \nTWITTER: @DublinSoundLab

SUMMARY:Offset
DESCRIPTION:So it turns out 2009\, in the depths of the downturn\, also turned into a year where people bravely struck out with their ideas. Offset joins the likes of Live Collision (another highlight) and Body & Soul as events which turn 10 this year. It’s not been without its struggles\, and its venue downsize reflects this\, but Offset is still the creative festival of choice in the capital\, bringing homegrown and foreign talents into focus across platforms such as photography\, design\, illustration\, typography and animation. We’re glad to be welcoming home former TD contributors such as Richard Gilligan as well as making first encounters with the likes of James Victore \n \n  \nPoint of information – Google maps indicates the walk from the Point Square to The Ferryman is 14 minutes (1.1km). \nRead our interview with photographer Gillian Hyland who is talking at Offset here

SUMMARY:Fiesta de Carnaval
DESCRIPTION:Often referred to as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ Carnaval falls just before Lent and Brazil being mainly a Catholic country like us\, they traditionally abstain from certain foods in the run-up to Easter and throw a big old party to celebrate\, making our pancake party literally pale by comparison. Carnival celebrations typically involve parades\, costumes\, music and of course plenty of food and drinks. So in keeping with the vibrant colours\, lively music and endless spectacle are part of Carnaval in Brazil\, Wigwam will be hosting a buzzing weekend full of bands\, DJs\, dancers and of course\, Feijoada\, Brazil’s traditional black bean and pork stew. \nThe new(ish) menu at Wigwam is a modern take on traditional Brazilian cooking with fresh flavours and street food vibes all served alongside one of the best-stocked rum bars in town. Plenty of Brazilian staples like farofa and cassava are available intertwined with local Irish produce. Head chef Pedro Ferraz has channelled his Brazilain roots and love of experimental cooking to come up with a buzzy menu that should hit plenty of taste spots.
