SUMMARY:GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Get set to savour new narratives\, daring documentaries\, and a terrific schedule of short films celebrating the LGBTQIA community’s shared battles and triumphs over the decades. \nGAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival returns to the IFI and The Lighthouse Cinema over seven days including the August bank holiday weekend\, presenting a packed lineup of new features\, shorts programmes\, and discussion events to celebrate queer love\, life and legacy across a spectacle of cinema. \nFrom an Irish perspective\, this year’s programme includes the much anticipated screening of Lesbian Lines\, a fascinating new documentary by Director Cara Holmes which captures the stories and experiences of volunteer workers in 1970s-1990s Ireland\, who quite literally helped save the lives of thousands of women. \n \nThis unique reflection on Ireland’s dyke history knits together a tapestry of first-hand recollections and anonymous stories recorded solely in logbooks\, and listened to from dingy offices\, bathrooms and shared community spaces across Dublin\, Cork\, Belfast and Galway. Catch it at Lighthouse Cinema on Thursday\, July 30th and prepare to fall in love with them all. \nSince GAZE’s founding in 1992\, queer life has drastically transformed from the unspoken to the hypervisible. This year’s programme of shorts collects historical perspectives on the colonial camera\, new visions of video self-portraits\, and thrilling narratives of supernatural stalkers to ask: What does it mean to be queer and trans in 2026\, when nearly nothing is private\, everyone is witnessed\, and everything is recorded? \nWe’re particularly looking forward to seeing Give Me The Ball\, the compelling documentary about tennis icon Billie Jean King by Liz Garbus and Elizabeth Wolff featuring a blend of contemporary interviews with Elton John\, Serena Williams\, and King’s great love\, Ilana Kloss. Teeming with joy\, anger\, rebellion and victory\, it screens at the IFI on Sunday. \n \nNothing beats seeing it on the big screen with an audience of your people. Go see! \nGAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival runs at the IFI and The Lighthouse Cinema from Wed July 29th to Monday August 6th. \ngaze.ie

SUMMARY:Untold Ukraine - Voices of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:On May 15th\, Russian strikes damaged the Lavra church\, a UNESCO heritage site\, and hit the Dovzhenko Film Studios\, destroying a historic costume collection that formed part of Ukraine’s cinematic legacy. \nAgainst this backdrop\,  Voices of Resistance\, the Ukrainian Film Festival returns to Dublin with a programme showcasing films made and released in the past five years. Through award-winning films\, documentaries\, and Irish-Ukrainian productions\, the festival showcases how culture has become one of Ukraine’s most powerful forms of resistance. \nFrom teenagers coming of age in Kyiv and reflections on school life in Ukraine amid wartime realities\, to a documentary about a beloved cultural icon whose songs continue to inspire generations\, and the story of an unlikely dreamer searching for connection at the edge of the universe\, these films offer a glimpse into the contemporary realities of Ukrainians beyond the headlines. \nThese contemporary stories\, all released since 2022\, reveal how in times of war\, creativity becomes an act of resilience. Together\, they celebrate the strength of individuals and communities who continue to create\, imagine\, and carry their culture forward despite more than four years of full-scale war. More than stories of survival\, these are stories of cultural resistance. \n \nThe Festival runs from July 2nd – 6th in partnership with the Irish Film Institute and the Embassy of Ukraine in Ireland. Films will also be shown at The Lexicon Library in Dun Laoghaire. \nMore details here.

Kerry pop-folk band Simple Things is in action on Friday May 8th\, while Friday\, May 8th\, also sees singer and actress Camille O’Sullivan live at Christ Church Cathedral. \n \nIn addition\, the Late in D8 after dark series will see a showcase of BIMM College graduates alongside late night parties taking place in venues across the district. The majority of these events are free to attend. \nThe Culture Date with Dublin 8 Festival will take place from Monday May 4th – Sunday May 10th. SUMMARY:Samhain Agus Science 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is once again conjuring up the spooky side of science and history with the return of its much-loved festival\, Samhain agus Science. Now in its eighth year\, the festival blends cutting-edge research with Celtic traditions to explore where science\, culture and the supernatural collide. Following a number of spectacular events last week\, the festival wraps with three fascinating events today and tomorrow. \n1. The Demon’s in the Detail sees Theoretical Physicist and Senior Lecturer in Physics at Bristol University\, Felix Flicker\, present a talk on the surprising rich history of demons in physics and the various 19th century thought experiments that invoked demons as imagined agents capable of superhuman powers. He will then present ongoing work in which we seek to detail a lesser-known modern example of demons in physics: Pines’ demon\, a new type of particle observed in 2023. 7pm\, Monday Nov 3rd\, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. Doors 6.30pm. \n2. Magma in Motion\, an engaging science event presented by researchers from the Geophysics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the Dublin Magmatism Group that explores the dynamic forces beneath Earth’s surface. 6pm Tuesday Nov 4th\, M4 Lecture theatre\, Museum Building TCD. Doors 6.30pm. \n3. Medieval Murder Mysteries: Homicide in Early Irish Law a mesmerising talk by Dr Viktoriia Krivoshchekova\, post-doctoral scholar in the School of Celtic Studies at DIAS\, on how medieval Irish law dealt with murder\, especially when the identity of the killer was not obvious. It will explore how such cases were treated by the law and what methods could be used to investigate them to answer the age-old question: “whodunnit?” 7pm – 8pm Tuesday Nov 4th\, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. Doors 6.30pm. \nAll events are free and are designed for a general audience\, welcoming everyone from curious newcomers to seasoned science enthusiasts to learn more about the world around us. \nTo register your attendance and book your place visit Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Irish Film Institute Documentary Festival
DESCRIPTION:We love an IFI Festival and this is always one of their must sees. The annual celebration of non-fiction filmmaking takes place from Wednesday 10th to Sunday 14th September\, bringing together bold voices\, urgent topics\, and inventive forms\, to present a cutting edge mix of screenings\, panel discussions\, and public interviews. It’s impossible to pick out highlights but music lovers (and performers) of a certain age are bound to find many touchstones in Frank Shouldice’s Once We Were Punks and How To Build A Library\, an inspirational triumph over adversity from Kenya in which the filmmakers document the quest to transform the formerly whites-only\, colonial-era McMillan Memorial Library into a vibrant cultural hub for a new generation of Africans. The hot ticket is bound to be the Thurs Sept 11th screening of Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man\, to hear Adams’ uncensored perspectives on the conflict\, a life spanning war and transition to peace\, and an ongoing campaign towards Irish unity. It’s followed by a Q&A with Director Trisha Ziff and Adams\, hosted by Betty Purcell. \nIFI\, 6 Eustace St\, D2. Sept 10th – 14th. Info & Tickets: ifi.ie

SUMMARY:Celebrating Traveller Women's Voices with Kitty Cassidy Helen Hutchinson & Rosie McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Poster Fish Promotions presents a celebration of Traveller women’s voices in conversation\, poetry and song with Kitty Cassidy\, Helen Hutchinson and Rosie McCarthy. The event takes place from 2-3pm on Sunday 24 August in Smithfield Square\, Dublin 7 as part of the DCC Dublin City Fleadh.\n\nKitty Cassidy made her name in the traditional music community in Ireland and the UK through field recordings made by Alen MacWeeney in late 1960s. The album Whisht!: Irish Traveller Folktales & Songs – The Cassidys\, 1967\, featuring a selection of these recordings was later released in 2002. This brought Kitty’s voice to a new generation of singers and song collectors where she proved influential with artists such as Lisa O’Neill and Radie Peat.\n\nA collector of songs in her own right\, Kitty grew up in a musical family steeped in tradition. Her father\, Johnny Cassidy\, was a noted storyteller\, and her mother had a store of songs and a beautiful voice and often sang in public.\n\nNow 85\, she recently performed at Misleor festival of nomadic cultures in 2023 and featured in the RTE documentary Songlines last year.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKitty will be joined by poet Helen Hutchinson and singer Rosie McCarthy.\n\nHelen Hutchinson is a lifelong activist and poet. Co-founder of Pavee Point\, much of Helen’s work reflects the Traveller way of life and the discrimination that her community suffers. It also reflects the resilience of the community as her work gives voice to pride in Traveller identity and also celebrates the Traveller language. Her poetry collection\, ‘From The Dirt Lane to the Open Roads’\, was published in 2024.\n\nRosie McCarthy is a young sean-nós singer and actor from West Cork. Combining her Traveller heritage with her love of singing\, her beautiful voice has power and a depth of emotion that is striking in someone so young. Rosie also appeared in RTE’s Songlines and has performed at Misleor festival of nomadic cultures.\nThe event takes place from 2-3pm on Sunday 24 August on Smithfield Square as part of the DCC Dublin City Fleadh. \n\n\nThis is a free event\, but space is limited.
