SUMMARY:Postcards in Between - Maria Kelly & Minding Creative Minds
DESCRIPTION:Well-known folk artist Maria Kelly joins forces with Minding Creative Minds for Postcards In Between\, a brilliant exhibition and panel talk focusing on mental health and creativity taking place at Universal Space on Capel Street\, Dublin 1 this weekend. \nThe ‘Postcards In-between‘ project initially started with Maria Kelly asking her fellow Irish songwriters to pen a ‘note-to-self’ letter to a version of themselves that they thought might need a helping hand. The letters became 12 postcards – each one linking to a track on her 2021 debut album\, The Sum of the In-between. The project features Abbacaxi\, Ciaran Lavery\, James Vincent McMorrow\, Paul Noonan\, Rosie Carney\, Runah\, Saint Sister\, Sammy Copely\, Shiv\, Sive and Tim Chadwick. \n\nDesigned by Irish-French illustrators Pipe & Pallet (Nathanaël Roman) and Cécilia Noiraud\, these postcards will be exhibited in various forms at a free pop-up exhibition taking place at Universal Space\, Dublin on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May. The exhibition is being run in association with Minding Creative Minds\, Ireland’s first 24/7 (32 county and our Irish overseas) well-being support programme for the entire Irish creative sector.\n\nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, Maria Kelly will present an evening of discussion\, music and art centered around cultivating self-compassion\, in association with Minding Creative Minds. Musicians Tim Chadwick and Sammy Copley  and visual artist Cécilia Noiraud will join Maria Kelly in a panel discussion on Saturday 30th April\, at 7pm\, hosted by psychotherapist and author\, Siobhan Murray. \nThe conversation is set to explore the idea of self-compassion\, particularly in the lives of Irish creatives\, the interplay between mental health and creative careers\, and the avenues of support available as a creative community and from dedicated mental health services. \n \nIn outlining the background to the project\, Maria Kelly tells us that ‘Postcards In-between’ aims to highlight how powerful it can be to practice self-compassion. “I’ve struggled with my mental health for years\, but in 2019\, I went through a crisis. There were many things that made that recovery an uphill battle\, but I know something that kept me going was a quiet voice that knew I didn’t deserve what I was experiencing; the voice that knew there was a version of me somewhere that got through it. \n“‘Postcards In-between’ aims to bring that voice to the forefront\, and I’m very grateful that these eleven artists have been so vulnerable with their offerings. SUMMARY:Mirza Cizmic - Memories of the Loud Silence
DESCRIPTION:Mirza Cizmic is the ‘Open Call’ winner from Hang Tough’s shout out last year and what a worthy winner. His collection of oil paintings are everything and then some. He states his practice is related to “past experiences” and what a glorious rabbit hole of experience he brings us through. Bonkers\, dark\, humourous\, questioning\, distorted\, domestic…his compositions are inspired by old master painters but are brought into a contemporary context with layered\, collage style presentation. DESCRIPTION:An artist and a writer put the city where they live\, walk and love at the centre of their work. Their gaze is attracted\, more than by the places\, by the people who pass through it every day. They are intrigued by the stories that are hidden behind that multitude of faces\, ordinary and at the same time unique stories that deserve to be imagined and then told. (…) \nThe juxtapositions between writing and image work by analogies\, sometimes obvious\, other times barely perceptible\, in an intense dialogue that plays on the contrast between the density of the text and the essentiality of the tableaux. The real common denominator of this process is the city of Dublin\, always present even if in the background\, with its atmosphere\, its colours and above all its sea. But what remains after immersing oneself in the creative universes of these two artists\, and their original approach to being together and talking to each other\, is the overall emotion of the lives of others\, which we always look at from afar\, but which in the end\, tell us about ourselves. \n \nMARIO SUGHI (nerosunero) is an Italian painter and illustrator based in Dublin. He participated in the 54th Venice Biennale\, the Italian Pavilion in the World\, at the Italian Institute of Culture (Dublin 2011) and his work has been selected for nine of the recent RHA Annual Exhibition (Dublin 2012–2021). \n\n\n\nMIA GALLAGHER is based in Dublin. She writes novels\, stories and non-fiction and has devised\, written and performed for the stage and a contributing editor of the Irish literary journal The Stinging Fly. \nUntil April 10 \n

DESCRIPTION:This new body of work features eighteen original pieces\, encompassing unique mediums such as wood\, glass and canvas. Throughout ‘Division’\, Aches has masterfully craed a cohesive and unique visual through-line\, by using a dynamic and consistent colour theory. This continual thread aesthetically unites the different mediums to form an electrifying collection that is definitely not to be missed. As part of the exhibition\, there will also be an exclusive fine-art print release. \n  \nʻDivisionʼ is Aches’ bold\, confronting artistic response to the events of the past two years. The body of work speaks to the division and isolation of people\, where previously solid and established social circles began to splinter due to enforced separation. DESCRIPTION:This photography exhibition is conceived by Irish artists Karen Cowley (Wyvern Lingo) and photographer Ruth Medjber\, in aid of Refugee Rescue. An open entry call went out last month inviting submissions based around the conception of the sea and what it means to our island nation. A few pals such as Hozier have been enlisted to offer their vistas also. “The sea gives me the feeling of familiarity that I can tap into anywhere in the world. I use it to soothe my anxious mind when I travel. I let the sound wash over my noisy thoughts and drown out the sounds of a blustering world and re-center me with its infinite rhythm. I focus my eyes on the horizon and blissfully zone out. It’s meditation\, nostalgia\, comfort and peace. DESCRIPTION:‘Hello\, I’m Salvatore of Lucan and I am 28 years old now. ‘Dead Present’ is a show which starts on the left with me in work and goes right across to me as a blemmyae. There’s me in the pub too and then me eating a takeaway afterwards. Then me dead under a pot of flowers and also a still life of some dead flowers. After that there’s a family portrait before the painting of the blemmyae. The show takes its name from the painting of the dead flowers as they were a gift and are now dead. You may notice I am dead present in the work too. There is a stained glass window of me getting sick and that’s it. Questions you may not ask me include\, Why do you paint yourself all the time? and Where are you from?’ \nRecent solo exhibitions include Melodrama\, Hang Tough Contemporary (2021)\, Show of Himself\, Pallas Projects (2018). SUMMARY:Mutualisms - Peter Smyth
DESCRIPTION:‘Mutualisms’\, Peter Smyth’s debut solo show\, is inspired by the often unseen and abstract operations within plant ecology. \nIn his work\, Peter considers the parallels between the natural occurrences of plant ecology\, and that of his painting process – specifically\, the painting’s relationship to the digital processes that are used to create them. \nAs part of his process\, Peter uses computer generated renders as creative stimulus\, and translates them into original painted works. 3D models are drawn from facets of plant ecology\, above and below ground. \n“Mutualism is usually defined as an interaction between individuals of different species which result in beneficial effects. To me\, the painting is entangled in a mutualistic relationship with the digital medium.” \nWhat we see exhibited are a collection of colourful\, abstract paintings – no digital pieces. SUMMARY:Deck - A Collection of Found Playing Cards: Claire Halpin
DESCRIPTION:Stemming from the artist’s habit picking up playing cards she has found over many years\, Deck is a snapshot in time and place of a collection largely amassed on the streets of Dublin 1.  Making her own rules however\, the collection spans continents. Every card has a back story\, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay\, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck. How can so many cards have been mislaid? Were they up someone’s sleeve? Thrown away in a losing streak? Did they simply blow away? Each card represents a redundant pack from whence they came. \n“Every card has a back story\, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay\, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck.” \nIn 17 years working in the area I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone playing cards on the street.  In Claire’s short commute from her home in Summerhill to her studio in Talbot Street\, finding cards and adding them to her collection\, became almost ritualistic. For this exhibition Claire has chosen not only to fill the windows of the Cube space at the LAB with these cards but also invites audiences to listen to the stories she’s collected of varying “house rules” for old favourites and games previously unknown to her. The very act of installing the show in the window has led to heated debates about rules with passers by\, some of whom were subsequently recorded at the card table in the exhibition. \nClaire Halpin’s work explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories through painting\, video and installation. Recently acquired by IMMA\, a common concern across her work is an interest in perception and interpretation of images.  Her work raises questions about how we choose to record history and the veracity of painting\, photography\, and the media in documenting future history. \nThis exhibition captures the artist’s personal experience on her daily journey to make the paintings for which she is best known while drawing on her fascination with cultural exchange\, storytelling and social fabric.

SUMMARY:Words as colour not language - Paul Hallahan
DESCRIPTION:Paul Hallahan is an Irish artist whose work is primarily based in painting\, but he also works in sculpture and video. Interests within his work commonly focus on how we interact with nature\, taking art as a form or by-product of nature and our civilisation. Using various methods and techniques Paul’s paintings are built up of thin layers on mostly raw canvases which allow light to move through the works and allow the works change within the locations they are positioned. This has always been of interest to Hallahan as he wanted the works to be active to the viewer and transcend the composition and initial image of the work. \n \n“The themes in my exhibition ‘Words as colour not language’\, look at organic matter within our landscape\, our relationship to the dense woodlands and crevices\, especially woodlands near the west coast of Ireland\, South Donegal\, Leitrim and Sligo. Previous interests in my works have looked to ideas of the larger landscape such as horizons in urban settings and our relationship to the rising and setting sun within the built up environment. This new exhibition will encircle a work titled “Lotus”\, a large dense painting made with organic matter and magnetic fields in mind. The exhibition will present works that I have worked on throughout 2020 and 2021\, most never seen before but all made during my transition from urban to country living. SUMMARY:Vestige - Stephen Burke
DESCRIPTION:New work by Stephen Burke\, a multi-disciplinary artist and curator working between London and Dublin. \nBurke’s ambitions are to highlight a new visual understanding within our built environment\, focusing on elements of communication. He explores the cultural divide between street and gallery\, blurring the line between high and low art\, while offering a passion for the acts of creativity that happen within our everyday lives. Burke is interested in cities’ social fabric and how architecture attempts to bring order to these spaces. His practice makes visible and finds meaning in many inconspicuous components of large cities that would otherwise only marginally attract our attention. \n“Burke is interested in cities’ social fabric and how architecture attempts to bring order to these spaces” \nBurke produces photographic documentation of urban areas focusing on traces of antisocial behavior\, waste excess and utility elements. He photographs the residue from graffiti removal\, broken fencing\, sprayed construction markings and stained mosaics\, a type of urban decay voyeurism that can be linked with psychogeography. Using this ‘visual waste’ Burke builds his own painterly language. The resulting works are testimonials to the dialogue between those who mark public space and those who clean it\, reinforcing the idea of public space as a contested arena. \n \nViscous\, Spray paint\, emulsion and silicone on Aluminium 40 x 60cm \n \nCover Up Spray paint oil and emulsion on Aluminium 40 x 60cm \nThe use of steel\, tiles and street furniture within his work underscores the systems implemented through architecture and speaks of the cityscape’s materiality. These systems are juxtaposed through mark-making and staining\, using pollutants\, emulsion\, adhesives\, electrical sanders\, spray paints and various other manipulations; think accumulations of chewing gum\, scrubbed away graffiti and glazed layers of glue. The relationship of clean and unclean references the sociological tension between order and disorder while simultaneously implying degeneration and vandalism. These ideologies are reflected in our cities and their constant state of both construction and deconstruction. \nRuns until March 5.

DESCRIPTION:The latest addition to Dublin’s art scene The Horse is a new gallery and project space founded by artist Matthew Wilkinson.  Located at Bethesda Place\, Dublin 1\, this month sees the gallery presenting a new body of work by the prominent Italian\, Los Angeles-based\, graffiti artist SMART RIS. \nA member of the infamous New York Rockin’ It Suckers graffiti crew\, SMART RIS has been making work for over 30 years and has collaborated with some of the leading names on the scene including Chris Ellis ‘DAZE’\, Todd James ‘REAS’ and Stephen Powers ‘ESPO’. \n \nThe exhibition marks a departure for SMART RIS\, the artist has created a series of “drip” paintings made on location at the new Dublin gallery. Speaking about the exhibition\, gallery curator Matthew Wilkinson said that\, “The paintings are rooted in that childhood memory of the studio floor\, the compositions produced are investigations into the states that accompany the action surrounding a night of writing illegally. \n \nThe night sky\, the stars\, the lines that are produced by the spray can. DESCRIPTION:Internationally-renowned designers and NCAD alumni\, Aherne and Delany have worked together since 1998\, creating illustrative and typographic knitwear based on narrative storylines that draw on their own personal lives\, while simultaneously reflecting a wide range of social\, cultural and political moments. The Electro-Fuse exhibition captures an edit of graphic unisex knitwear\, including collaborations with a range of artists\, designers\, musicians and stylists. SUMMARY:Asylum Archive: Vukašin Nedeljković
DESCRIPTION:Activist\, artist\, independent scholar and former asylum seeker Vukašin Nedeljković have their first RHA exhibition of elements from their multidisciplinary testimonial project Asylum Archive. Having studied Photography at Belgrade’s Academy of Arts\, and with a MA in Visual Arts from Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology\, Nedeljković has dedicated almost 14 years to creating their archive of “asylum”\, Direct Provision and Emergency Accommodation in Ireland\, providing an insight into the treatment of people who have come to Ireland to seek protection. \n \nConcerned with the reality of life for asylum seekers\, Asylum Archive’s objective is to collaborate with asylum seekers\, artists\, academics\, civil society activists and others\, to create an interactive\, documentary\, cross-platform\, online resource which critically foregrounds accounts of exile\, displacement\, trauma and memory. \nIn Nedeljković’s photographic testimony\, no bodies of asylum seekers are presented; instead\, they focus on the architecture of confinement\, traces\, remnants and ghosts. \n \nTheir latest work includes a focus on Emergency Accommodation Centres.  The exhibition also references the latest White Paper on Direct Provision\, and commemorates the unknown numbers of people who have died within the system. \nA second edition of Nedeljković’s book Asylum Archive featuring both photographs and essays\, is also being published\, and will be launched during the exhibition. \nNedeljković says of the forthcoming exhibition\, “The exhibition in RHA will offer an awareness of the inhumane Direct Provision and Emergency Accommodation dispersal system in Ireland. SUMMARY:Katherine Sankey - Hydrozomes: water bodies
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Sankey‘s sculpture uses living plant tissue and human supply lines to engage in the geo-feminist conversation about what we gouge and suck from the planet. Her practice examines mutation and the human extractive machine of supply and power in a multi-species context. Her artworks engage with how we as people adapt and colonize as well as inhabit territories. \nSankey’s sculpture is linear and combines arboreal elements\, plumbing\, electrics and video. Her practice seeks to challenge assumptions about both the boundaries of the human and what constitutes a ‘natural’ object or environment. In its uncanny representations of embodiment and parasitic invasion of a host space\, Sankey’s sculpture holds a grimy\, distorted mirror to ‘the real’. \n“Katherine Sankey‘s sculpture uses living plant tissue and human supply lines to engage in the geo-feminist conversation about what we gouge and suck from the planet.” \nHydrozomes is a collection of artworks from the last 3 years shown for the first time\, or in new configurations. As you enter\, Sankey’s sculptural grammar connects the invisible linear apparatus of water and energy conduction surrounding us in our built environments\, with the living organisms of wood\, lichen and crustacean parts. \n \n​Then there is Hydrozomes\, a sprawling installation incorporating ‘studies’ of hybrid mineral bodies as organic architectures. Here we encounter Sankey’s studio practice ‘mid-process’; a rogue hydroponics of sorts\, inhabiting the experimental nature of the Artist-Initiated Projects. \n‘Sankey’s work asks important questions about how we connect to the unseen and to the mechanisms that we take for granted in the small\, routine moments of our lives. Her sculpture gestures to the delicate balance of our ecosystems (in the strict sense of the word but also our own personal systems\, both constructed and natural). Her practice also alludes to the sometimes awkward or precarious quality of these systems\, brought to the fore in the manner that artworks are made\, balanced and suspended. All I ever dream about is approaching and entering new landscapes. I am travelling constantly when I dream. Always coming around the corner to witness some vast mountain range\, exiting a train to set foot in a new city\, boarding an airplane to fly away somewhere. It’s always a different place. \n \n“The paintings in a sense are like portals\, the serpents represent me to some degree. How could they not?! I have no genuine interest in snakes. They are purely symbolic\, a carrier of energy and stories. And I dream of them too. Visions of a serpent inhaling its prey for sustenance\, unlocking its jaws to accommodate and swallow what will give it new life. Shedding its skin and changing with the environment. Becoming something new. If I am a snake then my studio is the rock I hide under to protect me from the sun. But I must come out. I must eat. I must live. \n“I want to craft a humble picture of my experience with common materials.” \n“And then there are my children. I am always thinking about them as I paint. They are in my work. SUMMARY:Bomb - Neil Dunne
DESCRIPTION:A show which explores the relationship between the artist and urban space. \nBomb exhibits a variety of paintings created in oil\, spray-paint and oil pastel originating as investigations into the built environment; this series has taken a peculiar format for what are fundamentally landscapes. Taking influence from the text SI International – (“Certain Shifting angles\, certain receding perspectives\, allow us to glimpse certain original conceptions of space” ) Neil Dunne has reimagined and explored the topographical locations of his native Dublin. \n \nThese works are in flux between abstraction and a recognisable visual language – a common thread exercised through form and structure has emerged\, an incoherent critique of culture and modern society are at the epicenter of this series upon which the audience can engage and play with. \nA vivid\, rhythmic approach to painting has emerged from Bomb\, encapsulating a range of studies over the past year\, he has offered an eclectic insight into the radical possibilities paint has to offer. Here we find Dunne’s work appearing as a fragmented set of compositions radically opposing any sense of formality\, each piece evolves and grows as the artist does. \nDunne’s work has developed a distinct language through his instinctive and gestural mark-making\, deriving from his deep interest in urban culture and background in printmaking. SUMMARY:Alternate - Robyn Carey
DESCRIPTION:This collection of works abstractly visualises human emotions\, time and space. The title refers to two things. How human emotions are in a constant state of flux as time passes\, alternating between different mental states and the quantum physics theory of alternative realities and the multiverse/many worlds theory. If taking these theories as true\, they are linked in a sense that every emotion we ever feel happens simultaneously in the past\, present and future\, all at once\, and infinitely in other dimensions. Alternate aims to question and capture the beauty of this proposed theoretical phenomenon. \nhttps://vimeo.com/embed-redirect/596524421 \nRobyn Carey is a painter and printmaker based in Dublin. Her abstract expressionist works currently explore human perception of time and space. She aims to strike an honest and natural balance between contrasting elements\, often creating a sense of movement between them and thus unveiling an underlying narrative to the viewer. Her work is characterised by her expressive mark making and complex layered compositions. Her introspective artworks are energetic\, with emotion expressed through gestural mark making\, textures and mono printing. \n \nEach layer of paint is applied in response to the last symbolising human responses to emotion as time passes. In her compositions\, Pattern is hinted at\, but never perfectly realised\, drawing parallels to human behavioural patterns. A sense of movement and constant flux can be seen in her work. She paints with a sense of naivety and a humanistic quality. Her process driven abstraction defines texture\, tactility\, and colour interaction as the leading qualities of beauty in her work. After completing an MFA in Fine Art in Brussels\, he returns to the capital with a new show which takes its source from press photography of the Israeli Palestine conflict. \n“‘Percept’ (the sensory impression of an object)\, ‘Logos’ (appeal to logic) tries to find a way to question notions of neutrality and ambiguity when dealing with the subject of war. While remaining sensitive to the subject\, an attempt is made to extract the materiality of war from these images. \nEqually the relationship between photography and painting is brought into question by considering critical positioning and appropriation. Your hair might be shorter\, you might be inspired by live music; or you could be drunk or maybe high on an interesting conversation you had with the person behind the counter. But when the people are gone\, these cafes\, pubs and clubs are only rooms with tables and chairs… When the shutters have been pulled down and the scent of frying food has evaporated the place becomes still.” \n \n\nBríd Higgins NíChinnéide is a figurative painter who usually paints people. She often paints from life\, studying living\, breathing subjects. In March 2020 she started to peer inside the windows of some of the businesses within her 5km radius. DESCRIPTION:“Ever since Helios’s chariot started rising in the East and galloping across the sky to set in the West\, life\, our human lives\, have been divided into light and darkness. Duality was introduced into our world on day one\, when the ominous words “let there be light!” were spoken. Two worlds formed: one drenched in light\, were virtues blossomed and one oneiric world\, where Apollo’s light could not penetrate and Dionysus dwelled in the shadows. To be said plainly: Good and evil have been part of our world since the beginning of times and our free will to choose between one or the other is what constitutes the cornerstone of our human condition. This is what this body of work is about. These paintings have a bitter sweet cadence to them\, on one side you can sense the eviscerating experience of shining a light onto what we have carefully hidden but on the other hand there is the strong reassuring feeling that you are not alone in this\, because truly… There is nothing new under the sun.” Delia Hamer \n \n \nHamer studied Painting at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan 2014\, and holds a Masters Degree in illustration at the University of the Arts London 2016. After completing her studies\, Hamer worked in the fashion industry and in late 2018\, she decided to move to Lisbon in order to pursue her lifelong passion; becoming a full time artist.

SUMMARY:of late - Ciara Roche
DESCRIPTION:Ciara Roche’s exhibition\, of late\, at mother’s tankstation\, features over thirty small-scale oil paintings\, many on paper\, documenting the tasteful complexities inherent to the art and science of presenting things we don’t really need. \n\nIn her ‘VS’ series\, desolate\, but glowingly lit\, lingerie departments\, somewhat reminiscent of the notorious ‘Father Ted’ (S02E11) episode\, chart the range and display strategies of the Victoria Secrets’ ‘Sexy’ range. Taped yellow arrows on the floor indicate a one-way-COVID-traffic\, supply an escape system. Roche’s funny\, cool\, dispassionate paintings supply sufficient detail to make complex choices; to order the right SMEG or Dyson product for our ‘ideal’ Instagram moment. If in doubt\, to a personal capacity for good taste\, we could of course always rely on the aesthetic discipline of IKEA to co-ordinate our interior world – this goes with that.\n\n \n\nTellingly\, the artist notes: “This year I moved into my own house; renting from my family meant that I could do a bit more with the house in terms of decorating\, changing layouts. This led me to the ‘need’ to spend more time looking at such places as IKEA\, various furniture shops\, appliance stores\, and I think this is what led me on to paint some of these spaces and subjects. Was I painting my aspirations? Perhaps I would have liked to own a coffee machine\, but as soon as I made the painting\, I no longer felt the desire. Perhaps I never really had the desire at all\, and I might be a little annoyed at the world for tricking me into thinking that I did”. DESCRIPTION:Samuel Walsh’s small segment drawings are based on sections of larger drawings\, which he has always included in his practice since 1977. He maintains that scale does not diminish the work’s intensity or discipline value\, and subliminally Walsh brings aspects of upbringing\, culture\, travels\, and personal associations and relationships into his creative practice. \nThese drawings are made using a brush soaked in ‘encre de Chine’ (Chinese ink) as well a range of liquid mediums\, especially acrylic gouache when introducing a second or third colour. Each drawing requires three linear coats to establish a finish \nWalsh states that he does not always represent the world but he lives in it\, asking difficult questions and challenging his audience with his ideas translated into two-dimensional forms. DESCRIPTION:Our world is in upheaval\, we face an existential threat both in terms of radical and rapid environmental change\, in terms of ever-increasing violent political extremism on the far right\, and a government that seems to work against our interests at every turn. As we live in the world today\, asking ourselves and our community what we want to be free of\, Queer Utopia engages with queer pleasure\, love\, joy\, and friendship\, encouragingly asking; what will we keep? \nQueer Utopia is a collaborative sculptural and digital vision of a queer future: a pink\, joyful\, playful space created in response to a series of discussions between the artist and other queer people. For some\, queer utopia was a physical place\, a home\, a building\, or a forest filled with the people they love\, and for others\, it was a political statement. Our queer utopia is a place of freedom\, of righteous anger\, a place full to the very brim with loving and radical care for our comrades. The world we live in right now is often scared of us\, and in turn\, we are often scared of it; this exhibition serves as a fleeting glimpse into that peaceful\, beautiful\, queer future we are hoping for. \nQueer Utopia by Mariette Feeney runs at A4 Sounds until May 30.

SUMMARY:Beacons - Daragh Muldowney
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Daragh Muldowney has been travelling to Lake Baikal\, Siberia\, the largest freshwater lake on the planet\, for the past three years. He has been compiling work for his latest exhibition which documents his many trips to this alluring area of breath-taking natural beauty\, creating stunning images that illustrate the immense attraction of the ice there and the small trees that mark out the road traversing the frozen lake. \nLake Baikal is one of the most biodiverse places on earth as it is home to thousands of species of plants and animals\, many of which are endemic to the region. In winter\, temperatures drop as low as -40°C and the lake becomes a vast frozen plain. Crossing the lake can be a hazardous journey as the ice comes under huge pressure causing it to either break apart exposing the frigid water below or crush together creating large jagged hummocks. To help travellers across the ice\, the locals mark out an ice road by drilling holes and planting small pine trees that act as markers\, ‘beacons’ guiding the way. \nPhotographing this ancient road system was a fascinating experience for Muldowney in many ways and he feels that his documentation of this unusual and unique way of life is a beautiful human story that also highlights the immense natural beauty of Lake Baikal. \nRuns until June 18 (viewing by appointment only from Monday to Friday\, 9am to 5.30pm)
