SUMMARY:Carl Hickey - Everything and Nothing 
DESCRIPTION:There’s a vibrant bounce to Carl Hickey’s body of work. The young Clondalkinite pops a green on a gable end\, puts pink and blue wigs into a scene which could be either neighbourhood pleasantries or Funny Games\, there’s the brilliant Garda caught on his phone and transferred to canvas. It’s the well recognised\, slightly pathetic\, mid run of a pointless pursuit. Hickey’s observations live and breath the city\, someone glaringly Dublin\, some more intimate and isolated. \n Atelier Now\, March 16-April 1.

SUMMARY:Declan Clarke: The Museum of Broadcasting and Loneliness
DESCRIPTION:Comprising of two elements – Saturn and Beyond is a film tracing the history of transcontinental communication and broadcasting using slide film\, video footage and analogue photography. Pondering the development of how telecommunications and air travel led to the exploration of the solar system\, Clarke’s gaze stretches to the furthest reaches of Saturn as well as the exponential growth of Alzheimer’s disease and the rapid growth of dementia (10m each year).  \nThe second aspect are transmission and receiver objects from the Museum which was founded by his father in 1981\, running for 15 years before going into storage until Clarke unearthed them in 2017. His father ended up developing dementia to which Clarke says\, “For me there was a metaphorical and tragic irony to the fact the founder of a museum of broadcasting and communications would develop a disease which would mean he could no longer communicate.” \nRHA until March 26

DESCRIPTION:Handmade artisan rugmakers Ceadogán are set to launch “Island”\, an exciting new project which brings together a dozen of Ireland’s finest artists\, each of whom will be drawing on their individual designs and interpretations to create a unique one-off rug or wall hanging piece. The unique collection of stunning one-off handmade rugs will go on public display at the Hang Tough Contemporary gallery on Exchequer Street\, Dublin from January 26th. \nThis innovative project includes pieces from some of Ireland’s leading artists\, including Gottfried Helnwein\, Dorothy Cross\, Sean Scully\, Maser\, Domino Whisker\, Gilbert Menassa\, Hannah Ní Mhaonaigh\, Mary O’Connor\, Colm Mac Athlaoich\, Sean Atmos\, Lola Donoghue and Alice Fitzgerald. \nFollowing the exhibition\, each piece will be auctioned off\, with 50% of profits from the sale being donated to Peter McVerry Trust for homelessness. SUMMARY:'Why be an artist?' (after Leigh Hobba and Noel Sheridan)
DESCRIPTION:It is utterly apt to have this all consuming question planted before the next generation of aspiring artists whilst paying homage to the late director of NCAD\, Noel Sheridan. His performance work filmed by Hobba in ’94 explored the reasons to pursue this path\, stating “if you do art as a second choice it will show in the work” and “you must be oppositional to any manifestations of the superstructure” and while you must do bargains with all of these\, meeting their agendas will never benefit your work. \nHere Oísín Byrne and Vaari Claffey revisit the framework with practising visual artists invited to respond to Sheridan’s provocations. With each element representing a different construct of life – time\, balance\, expectations. The ambitious endeavour to keep everything afloat. Maser’s graphic eye leads the creative process with captivating compositions. While his expertise in street art\, and fine art\, bring looser forms to the canvas. Each canvas pinpoints a fleeting moment of energy and focus in daily life. \n“These paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony.” \nThe paintings display a graphic balance of forms and colour\, with clusters of busy lines creating a focal point to draw the viewer in. These clusters pinpoint fleeting moments of energy. In some paintings they feel somewhat chaotic\, and in others they bring harmony and ease to the composition. Eluding to the ebb and flow of life. Maser’s signature use of black forms\, usually painted as the final layer\, fuses the segments of the painting together. SUMMARY:Niamh Flanagan: Thin Places of Escape and Return
DESCRIPTION:This body of work features colour etchings\, monoprint and collage by Master Printmaker Niamh Flanagan\, and is the first major solo exhibition of her work since An Elsewhere Place in 2012. The motif of the house or dwelling space is central to Flanagan’s work\, and the work in this show delves deeper into the notion of the house as a formative psychological structure\, one that inhabits our dreams and our inner spaces\, while also providing a physical barrier between the inside world and the outside. There is a playfulness here between ideas of inside and outside\, where inner worlds and forgotten realms bubble to the surface\,  where moons become galaxies or cosmic eyes or tiny pebbles in the sky.  \n a world of inverted clouds \nThis work draws its inspiration from iconic dwellings and structures in folklore and fairytale\, exploring how these tales\, and the houses in them\, can shape our thoughts\, our dreams and our memories. Irish and European folk and fairy tales provided an inspiration for many of the works in the exhibition\, as were many of the great artists who have engaged with the subject matter before her – from Harry Clarke to Paula Rego\, from David Hockney to Shaun Tan. These stories are dark and deep\, they are the stories we are told when we are tucked up safe in our beds; but they tell us about danger and evil\, many of these structures are traps or prisons\, things are not always as they seem. These prints depict dark and fractal towers\, glassy sharp mountains\, and towering beanstalks\, all familiar\, and yet strange. We have returned to the world of our childhood\, but something is different in this desolate oneiric universe. Something has changed. But maybe it is we who have changed in returning\, like Oisín on his ill-fated trip from Tír na nÓg. Through these subtle explorations and juxtapositions\, Flanagan’s work seems to be gently nudging us towards another space\, maybe a thin place\, where magic can happen\, where the ground can shift in an instant\, where we are the dreamers of dreams.  \n storm approaching \nFlanagan’s practice is concerned with utopias and otherworlds\, the need for escape\, reverie and daydreaming. She cites Bachelard’s Poetics of Space as an influence\, positing the house as  ‘a space for dreaming’. Some of the works in the series move beyond fairytale and representations\, featuring more pared back and isolated imagery\, as in Refuge I: unfolding and Refuge II: tower. Here some of the structures are breaking away\, unfolding\, floating in space\, apart from their worlds\, creating sites of dreaming which further explore ideas of safety and containment\, volatility and confinement.  \n tiny cosmos  \nIn recent years Flanagan has been working in collage-etching alongside her etching process. She creates one-off original pieces using this technique where she combines elements of monoprint with collage\, using off-cuts of elements from her etchings\, combining and juxtaposing them to create new narratives and compositions. The resulting work creates something of a dream-like universe\, in which elements from a print can appear and re-appear in different settings; creating new meaning and contexts through these works.  \nRuns until October 29. \n dreaming of shoals

In the case for fruit\, it would appear as though enjoyment is embedded in the very definition of its term\, and understandably so.  Fruit symbolises so much more than simply being a byproduct of the earth’s natural labours\, but also the enjoyment it offers to its both consumers\, innovators and spectators alike. DESCRIPTION:Entitled ‘The Infinite Library’\, the multimedia installation offers visitors an immersive experience\, using VR\, holograms\, 3D-printed objects\, a QR code game and audio-visual works. The installation’s central piece is a vast VR library\, set in a cave\, in which visitors can explore a series of smaller sub-libraries\, dedicated to topics as diverse as Polynesian navigation\, South-Indian puppetry and European alchemy. \nThe exhibition was created by the Goethe-Institut in conjunction with internationally renowned multimedia artist and creative director of the exhibition\, Mika Johnson. Commenting ahead of the exhibition opening at the Goethe-Institut in Dublin\, he said: “The Infinite Library seeks to embed human stories within a much grander narrative\, one which includes the birth of our planet and the evolution of all life forms. \n \n“It reimagines what we generally understand a library to be and offers a glimpse of what a library might look like in the future. We sat in a small cafe to drink cappuccinos and gossip. I went home early\, feeling a wave of anxiety. Early the next morning\, I was lying in bed in complete darkness. Suddenly\, I heard the sound of an explosion. \nI turned on my phone. The news declared: “Putin Invades Ukraine.” \nMy mom was still offline\, so I decided to give her a couple more hours of peaceful rest in my native city\, Kryviy Rih. When we finally spoke around 7 a.m. on Feb. 24\, I heard sounds on my mother’s end. They too were explosions. \nThat’s how our journey started. DESCRIPTION:“For a long time I struggled with blue\, for me it was the colour of logic\, order\, organisation. And while I’ve nothing against logic\, it’s never been how I work. My process doesn’t do order\, my paintings don’t start with a destination. Instead they’re born in the chaos of the doing\, painted on the ground\, they evolve\, they mutate\, depending on the light that day\, the music I’m listening to\, as I move in constant motion around them. And that wasn’t blue. \nAnd then\, like the lover in a Charlotte Bronte or Jane Austen story that the protagonist first hates but then loves\, blue revealed itself. I started surrounded by the wild elemental scapes of land\, sea and sky\, between the Beara and the Iveragh on the Atlantic-lashed coasts near Kenmare. There\, looking at its blues\, sometimes for days on end\, I saw blue wasn’t order or calm\, it was wild\, seductive\, raw\, ungrounded. That it wasn’t one shade\, it was a million. That far from being the reassuring presence of the paintbox\, was the maddest\, craziest\, bastard there was. That like the sirens of Greek mythology\, could change from softness to malevolence in a split second. \nAnd that’s what I wanted to paint.” \n– Paul Hughes

DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition of new sculptures will feature 15 jesmonite heads depicting two elements coming together – the raven and the human. “The raven pieces should not be viewed as raven overwhelming the human form\,” says sculptor Catherine Greene. “They could be construed as symbiosis of man and animal or it can be read as man elevating himself above his quotient existence. Ravens are harbingers of knowledge\, of death\, of transformation. They are portals into another place. My idea was to make work that suggests a blend and coming together of human with bird where it becomes impossible to disconnect the two entities. DESCRIPTION:Well-known folk artist Maria Kelly joins forces with Minding Creative Minds for Postcards In Between\, a brilliant exhibition and panel talk focusing on mental health and creativity taking place at Universal Space on Capel Street\, Dublin 1 this weekend. \nThe ‘Postcards In-between‘ project initially started with Maria Kelly asking her fellow Irish songwriters to pen a ‘note-to-self’ letter to a version of themselves that they thought might need a helping hand. The letters became 12 postcards – each one linking to a track on her 2021 debut album\, The Sum of the In-between. The project features Abbacaxi\, Ciaran Lavery\, James Vincent McMorrow\, Paul Noonan\, Rosie Carney\, Runah\, Saint Sister\, Sammy Copely\, Shiv\, Sive and Tim Chadwick. \n\nDesigned by Irish-French illustrators Pipe & Pallet (Nathanaël Roman) and Cécilia Noiraud\, these postcards will be exhibited in various forms at a free pop-up exhibition taking place at Universal Space\, Dublin on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May. The exhibition is being run in association with Minding Creative Minds\, Ireland’s first 24/7 (32 county and our Irish overseas) well-being support programme for the entire Irish creative sector.\n\nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, Maria Kelly will present an evening of discussion\, music and art centered around cultivating self-compassion\, in association with Minding Creative Minds. Musicians Tim Chadwick and Sammy Copley  and visual artist Cécilia Noiraud will join Maria Kelly in a panel discussion on Saturday 30th April\, at 7pm\, hosted by psychotherapist and author\, Siobhan Murray. \nThe conversation is set to explore the idea of self-compassion\, particularly in the lives of Irish creatives\, the interplay between mental health and creative careers\, and the avenues of support available as a creative community and from dedicated mental health services. \n \nIn outlining the background to the project\, Maria Kelly tells us that ‘Postcards In-between’ aims to highlight how powerful it can be to practice self-compassion. “I’ve struggled with my mental health for years\, but in 2019\, I went through a crisis. There were many things that made that recovery an uphill battle\, but I know something that kept me going was a quiet voice that knew I didn’t deserve what I was experiencing; the voice that knew there was a version of me somewhere that got through it. \n“‘Postcards In-between’ aims to bring that voice to the forefront\, and I’m very grateful that these eleven artists have been so vulnerable with their offerings. SUMMARY:Mirza Cizmic - Memories of the Loud Silence
DESCRIPTION:Mirza Cizmic is the ‘Open Call’ winner from Hang Tough’s shout out last year and what a worthy winner. His collection of oil paintings are everything and then some. He states his practice is related to “past experiences” and what a glorious rabbit hole of experience he brings us through. Bonkers\, dark\, humourous\, questioning\, distorted\, domestic…his compositions are inspired by old master painters but are brought into a contemporary context with layered\, collage style presentation. This is topsy-turvy ‘did you spot that?’ assertive art of the finest kind. We are eagerly awaiting some sort of Salvatore of Lucan vs Mirza Cizmic art smackdown. \nuntil May 1

DESCRIPTION:An artist and a writer put the city where they live\, walk and love at the centre of their work. Their gaze is attracted\, more than by the places\, by the people who pass through it every day. They are intrigued by the stories that are hidden behind that multitude of faces\, ordinary and at the same time unique stories that deserve to be imagined and then told. (…) \nThe juxtapositions between writing and image work by analogies\, sometimes obvious\, other times barely perceptible\, in an intense dialogue that plays on the contrast between the density of the text and the essentiality of the tableaux. The real common denominator of this process is the city of Dublin\, always present even if in the background\, with its atmosphere\, its colours and above all its sea. But what remains after immersing oneself in the creative universes of these two artists\, and their original approach to being together and talking to each other\, is the overall emotion of the lives of others\, which we always look at from afar\, but which in the end\, tell us about ourselves. \n \nMARIO SUGHI (nerosunero) is an Italian painter and illustrator based in Dublin. He participated in the 54th Venice Biennale\, the Italian Pavilion in the World\, at the Italian Institute of Culture (Dublin 2011) and his work has been selected for nine of the recent RHA Annual Exhibition (Dublin 2012–2021). \n\n\n\nMIA GALLAGHER is based in Dublin. She writes novels\, stories and non-fiction and has devised\, written and performed for the stage and a contributing editor of the Irish literary journal The Stinging Fly. \nUntil April 10 \n

DESCRIPTION:This new body of work features eighteen original pieces\, encompassing unique mediums such as wood\, glass and canvas. Throughout ‘Division’\, Aches has masterfully craed a cohesive and unique visual through-line\, by using a dynamic and consistent colour theory. This continual thread aesthetically unites the different mediums to form an electrifying collection that is definitely not to be missed. As part of the exhibition\, there will also be an exclusive fine-art print release. \n  \nʻDivisionʼ is Aches’ bold\, confronting artistic response to the events of the past two years. The body of work speaks to the division and isolation of people\, where previously solid and established social circles began to splinter due to enforced separation. Layers of vibrant colour are strictly separated and overlapped to represent the fragmentation and division in society – executed in Aches’ distinctive style – and speak specifically to feelings of anxiety\, loneliness\, and disillusionment. \n\nUntil April 10

SUMMARY:Surrounded by Sea
DESCRIPTION:This photography exhibition is conceived by Irish artists Karen Cowley (Wyvern Lingo) and photographer Ruth Medjber\, in aid of Refugee Rescue. An open entry call went out last month inviting submissions based around the conception of the sea and what it means to our island nation. A few pals such as Hozier have been enlisted to offer their vistas also. “The sea gives me the feeling of familiarity that I can tap into anywhere in the world. I use it to soothe my anxious mind when I travel. I let the sound wash over my noisy thoughts and drown out the sounds of a blustering world and re-center me with its infinite rhythm. I focus my eyes on the horizon and blissfully zone out. It’s meditation\, nostalgia\, comfort and peace.
