SUMMARY:Robert Armstrong - After mountains\, more mountains
DESCRIPTION:“For a certain kind of painter\, painting is a process. Of course\, making a painting is necessarily a process\, usually one that delivers a finished work. But for some\, perhaps many painters\, the finished work is less a conclusion than a question. Robert Armstrong tends to see all paintings\, not just his own\, in terms of the questions they pose. \nHence\, his work has consistently incorporated a kind of running commentary on painting. Most obviously\, perhaps\, he has made works that explicitly address works made in the past\, notably during the Renaissance\, though not at all because they are historically distanced. Rather he is drawn to the way the painters in any era set about making the pictures they make. And he gravitates towards the residual questions lurking in apparent pictorial coherence: the gaps\, the oddities\, the tacit assumptions.” – Aidan Dunne.

SUMMARY:Alan Clarke - The Peatbog Baroque
DESCRIPTION:While Clarke has pivoted to being an award-winning sculptor\, he revisits his original grá for illustration with this new body of work\, the first show in over a decade. These “wildly imaginative and very carefully drawn drawings” include Oroborus adjusted (pictured)\, which shows the ancient symbol depicting a serpent eating its own tail whilst coiled around a bejewelled lady. As always\, Clarke draws you closer to reveal more. \nUnited Arts Club\, opens Thursday April 20 and runs until May 7.

SUMMARY:Dreams of Childhood
DESCRIPTION:GalleryX’s first curated group show of 2023 is dedicated to the idea of childhood\, “that magical time of our lives in which the boundary between the real\, the possible\, and the imaginary cross and are blurred; in which we can believe anything\, and in which we can make things real just by believing them. It is a time of wonder\, curiosity and discovery.” A collection of 19 artists present their dreams. \nGalleryX\, 11 Hume Street\, April 20 (6pm opening) until May 13.

SUMMARY:From Georgia with Love
DESCRIPTION:Elena Tsomaia is a Stockholm-based\, Georgian curator of From Georgia With Love\, an exhibition of the work of Tbilisi-based artist Keti Davlianidze. Elena got in touch back on January 2 asking for our support in assisting her ambition to host these love themed works. \nThere’s something wonderful about the lengths Tsomaia is going to in order to promote “Georgian art and the country at large.” And as the Rose Revolution\, which ushered in a nonviolent change of power there 20 years ago\, shows signs of wilting midst a weakened civil society and democracy recently culminating in a contentious Russian-inspired foreign agent law\, this is a timely reminder of the bigger picture we all need to see. \nIrish Georgian Society\, April 20-22.

SUMMARY:Venus Patel - Monsters of the Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:Monsters of the Apocalypse acts as a queer reimagining of the end of the world\, as well as a proposal for what a new one might look like. Using the language and presentation of radical preachers as well as her own experience living as a transfemme of color within a Eurocentric heteronormative society\, Patel investigates how the monstrous body (the “other”) can be used to create fear and revulsion\, but also as a site of exploration and societal growth. In us\, we all have a monster waiting to get out\, but to find them\, we must die\, and we must be reborn. Patel scooped the top prize at the 2022 RDS Visual Arts Award and this show forms part of Pallas’s artist-initiated project series. \nPallas Projects/Studios until Thursday April 28\, closing event performance The Preacher’s Sermon that night at 6pm. \nRead more:\nRDS Visual Art winners announced

SUMMARY:Carl Hickey - Everything and Nothing
DESCRIPTION:There’s a vibrant bounce to Carl Hickey’s body of work. The young Clondalkinite pops a green on a gable end\, puts pink and blue wigs into a scene which could be either neighbourhood pleasantries or Funny Games\, there’s the brilliant Garda caught on his phone and transferred to canvas. It’s the well recognised\, slightly pathetic\, mid run of a pointless pursuit. Hickey’s observations live and breath the city\, someone glaringly Dublin\, some more intimate and isolated. \n Atelier Now\, March 16-April 1.

SUMMARY:Declan Clarke: The Museum of Broadcasting and Loneliness
DESCRIPTION:Comprising of two elements – Saturn and Beyond is a film tracing the history of transcontinental communication and broadcasting using slide film\, video footage and analogue photography. Pondering the development of how telecommunications and air travel led to the exploration of the solar system\, Clarke’s gaze stretches to the furthest reaches of Saturn as well as the exponential growth of Alzheimer’s disease and the rapid growth of dementia (10m each year). \nThe second aspect are transmission and receiver objects from the Museum which was founded by his father in 1981\, running for 15 years before going into storage until Clarke unearthed them in 2017. His father ended up developing dementia to which Clarke says\, “For me there was a metaphorical and tragic irony to the fact the founder of a museum of broadcasting and communications would develop a disease which would mean he could no longer communicate.” \nRHA until March 26

SUMMARY:'Why be an artist?' (after Leigh Hobba and Noel Sheridan)
DESCRIPTION:It is utterly apt to have this all consuming question planted before the next generation of aspiring artists whilst paying homage to the late director of NCAD\, Noel Sheridan. His performance work filmed by Hobba in ’94 explored the reasons to pursue this path\, stating “if you do art as a second choice it will show in the work” and “you must be oppositional to any manifestations of the superstructure” and while you must do bargains with all of these\, meeting their agendas will never benefit your work. \nHere Oísín Byrne and Vaari Claffey revisit the framework with practising visual artists invited to respond to Sheridan’s provocations. We have the likes of Isadora Epstein using magic as her prism of exploration and Gary Farrelly stating that\, “problems are the bread and butter of an artist to cultivate and not resolve” and that they must use their “radical egocentric disposition to believe whatever they want to believe is true.” Essential pondering. \nNCAD Gallery until February 15. \nTalks series \nTuesday 31st January 2023\, 1.15PM\nA Walk-Through the Archive with Valerie Connor \nTuesday 7th February 2023\, 1.15PM\nWhy Be A Curator\nVaari Claffey\, Why be a curator? response to the ‘Why be an artist? (after Leigh Hobba and Noel Sheridan)’ filmed performance. \nTuesday 14th February 2023\, 1.15PM\nOn Collecting for Archives\nChristina Kennedy\, Senior Curator: Head of Collections at IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) in conversation with Vaari Claffey\, discusses some highlights from the Noel Sheridan Archive at IMMA.

Curator Aileen Moon informs us\, “One artist is currently living in direct provision\, one is the daughter of a holocaust survivor\, one is recovering from a brain injury\, one discovered art as a way to get through being a radiographer during the thick of Covid and we have one amazing woman who moved here from India whose dentistry qualifications aren’t recognised in Ireland so she became an artist.” Proceeds from the sale of works will go to MASI (Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland).\n\nDean Arts Studio\, Friday November 25 to Sunday November 27.

SUMMARY:Maser - Lost Time\, Found Again
DESCRIPTION:‘Lost time\, found again’ is an ambitious collection of original paintings by Maser. With this new collection\, comes a new chapter. A fusion of techniques and ideas\, honed over the last 25 years. The push and pull of time is a key narrative in this collection. With family and work at the heart of Maser’s life\, these paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony. \n \nMaser’s paintings are a balancing act of colour\, layers and form. With each element representing a different construct of life – time\, balance\, expectations. The ambitious endeavour to keep everything afloat. Maser’s graphic eye leads the creative process with captivating compositions. While his expertise in street art\, and fine art\, bring looser forms to the canvas. Each canvas pinpoints a fleeting moment of energy and focus in daily life. \n“These paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony.” \nThe paintings display a graphic balance of forms and colour\, with clusters of busy lines creating a focal point to draw the viewer in. These clusters pinpoint fleeting moments of energy. In some paintings they feel somewhat chaotic\, and in others they bring harmony and ease to the composition. Eluding to the ebb and flow of life. Maser’s signature use of black forms\, usually painted as the final layer\, fuses the segments of the painting together. They unify the artwork within the boundaries of the canvas\, to create a visual snapshot of time. \nRuns until November 14.

SUMMARY:Arthur Jafa - Love is the Message\, the Message Is Death
DESCRIPTION:“A head-spinning seven-minute compilation of joy\, pain and harsh fact” is how the New York Times described Arthur Jafa’s Love Is the Message\, the Message Is Death\, a video work by artist\, director\, and award-winning cinematographer Arthur Jafa which first premiered in 2017 and receives its Irish debut in partnership with the Form Foundation. \nSet to the searing highs and lows of Kanye West’s gospel-inspired hip-hop track\, Ultralight Beam\, it is a masterful convergence of found footage that traces African-American identity through a vast spectrum of contemporary imagery. \nFrom photographs of civil rights leaders watermarked with “Getty Images” to helicopter views of the LA Riots to a wave of bodies dancing to ‘The Dougie\,’ it suspends viewers in a swelling\, emotional montage. \nWed – Sun\, Gallery closed Monday and Tuesday. SUMMARY:Niamh Flanagan: Thin Places of Escape and Return
DESCRIPTION:This body of work features colour etchings\, monoprint and collage by Master Printmaker Niamh Flanagan\, and is the first major solo exhibition of her work since An Elsewhere Place in 2012. The motif of the house or dwelling space is central to Flanagan’s work\, and the work in this show delves deeper into the notion of the house as a formative psychological structure\, one that inhabits our dreams and our inner spaces\, while also providing a physical barrier between the inside world and the outside. There is a playfulness here between ideas of inside and outside\, where inner worlds and forgotten realms bubble to the surface\,  where moons become galaxies or cosmic eyes or tiny pebbles in the sky.  \n a world of inverted clouds \nThis work draws its inspiration from iconic dwellings and structures in folklore and fairytale\, exploring how these tales\, and the houses in them\, can shape our thoughts\, our dreams and our memories. Irish and European folk and fairy tales provided an inspiration for many of the works in the exhibition\, as were many of the great artists who have engaged with the subject matter before her – from Harry Clarke to Paula Rego\, from David Hockney to Shaun Tan. These stories are dark and deep\, they are the stories we are told when we are tucked up safe in our beds; but they tell us about danger and evil\, many of these structures are traps or prisons\, things are not always as they seem. These prints depict dark and fractal towers\, glassy sharp mountains\, and towering beanstalks\, all familiar\, and yet strange. We have returned to the world of our childhood\, but something is different in this desolate oneiric universe. Something has changed. But maybe it is we who have changed in returning\, like Oisín on his ill-fated trip from Tír na nÓg. Through these subtle explorations and juxtapositions\, Flanagan’s work seems to be gently nudging us towards another space\, maybe a thin place\, where magic can happen\, where the ground can shift in an instant\, where we are the dreamers of dreams.  \n storm approaching \nFlanagan’s practice is concerned with utopias and otherworlds\, the need for escape\, reverie and daydreaming. She cites Bachelard’s Poetics of Space as an influence\, positing the house as  ‘a space for dreaming’. Some of the works in the series move beyond fairytale and representations\, featuring more pared back and isolated imagery\, as in Refuge I: unfolding and Refuge II: tower. Here some of the structures are breaking away\, unfolding\, floating in space\, apart from their worlds\, creating sites of dreaming which further explore ideas of safety and containment\, volatility and confinement.  \n tiny cosmos  \nIn recent years Flanagan has been working in collage-etching alongside her etching process. She creates one-off original pieces using this technique where she combines elements of monoprint with collage\, using off-cuts of elements from her etchings\, combining and juxtaposing them to create new narratives and compositions. The resulting work creates something of a dream-like universe\, in which elements from a print can appear and re-appear in different settings; creating new meaning and contexts through these works.  \nRuns until October 29. \n dreaming of shoals

SUMMARY:taproot_art auction: FRUIT
DESCRIPTION:taproot_art return with their 3rd annual benefit auction with 50% of proceeds raised for Merchants Quay Ireland.  Curated and auctioned by taproot_art founder\, Sophie Murphy\, this year’s auction will be entirely fruit themed featuring contemporary art/photography from leading Irish and international artists such as Shane Berkery\, Jay Miriam\, Blaise Cepis\, Robyn Carey\, Peter Doyle Decoy\, & Neil Dunne\, music from rising Irish DJ/Producer Drua\,  \nRSVP: The auction will be free to attend\, and attendees can RSVP on the eventbrite page here. Indeed\, the origins of language can serve as a good barometer for many things\, but it is certainly a good way to understand how the masses felt about primitive things during humanity’s more nascent stages. In the case for fruit\, it would appear as though enjoyment is embedded in the very definition of its term\, and understandably so.  Fruit symbolises so much more than simply being a byproduct of the earth’s natural labours\, but also the enjoyment it offers to its both consumers\, innovators and spectators alike. It is the foundation for juice\, paintings\, landscapes\, perfumes\, memes\, vitamin intake\, and now…well\, auctions. For one night only\, you can bask in this enjoyment and appreciate fruit in all its glories and capabilities\, by observing great works from a set of top contemporary artists while devouring a mango simultaneously.   \n \n

SUMMARY:Alice Rekab - Family Lines
DESCRIPTION:Rekab’s best known work is probably ‘Units of Potential’\, the green balls affixed to the Lir Institute. However\, this commissioned work shows the expansive and intriguing nature of their practice. \nWith ‘Family Lines’ Rekab explores “embedded personal and cultural narratives; the stories that we tell and the stories that we are told about ourselves.” Objects and spaces in family member homes became keystones for Rekab’s understanding of who they are midst the “dislocation and fragmentation” of mixed-race Irish identity. \nRekab also invites Éireann and I\, an archive of Black life for Black migrants in Ireland\, to create a family living room experience replete with diverse material collected through workshops this spring. \nRich\, layered and rewarding. \nDouglas Hyde Gallery until September 25.

SUMMARY:The Infinite Library
DESCRIPTION:Entitled ‘The Infinite Library’\, the multimedia installation offers visitors an immersive experience\, using VR\, holograms\, 3D-printed objects\, a QR code game and audio-visual works. The installation’s central piece is a vast VR library\, set in a cave\, in which visitors can explore a series of smaller sub-libraries\, dedicated to topics as diverse as Polynesian navigation\, South-Indian puppetry and European alchemy. \nThe exhibition was created by the Goethe-Institut in conjunction with internationally renowned multimedia artist and creative director of the exhibition\, Mika Johnson. Commenting ahead of the exhibition opening at the Goethe-Institut in Dublin\, he said: “The Infinite Library seeks to embed human stories within a much grander narrative\, one which includes the birth of our planet and the evolution of all life forms. \n \n“It reimagines what we generally understand a library to be and offers a glimpse of what a library might look like in the future. The virtual library space at the heart of the installation is conceived as a living organism\, a kind of embodiment of knowledge that introduces itself to visitors personally before inviting them to explore its house.” \nDirector of the Goethe-Institut Irland\, Franziska Höfler\, added: “As a cultural institute with a busy library\, we are excited to reimagine what a library visit in the future might entail. Experience and knowledge were recorded and exchanged long before the advent of books and other media\, and it is inspiring to explore how\, through the use modern technology\, libraries around the world might evolve in the years to come.” \nRuns until Friday July 29 \n  \n

SUMMARY:My Mom Wants To Go Back Home
DESCRIPTION:Incredibly touching photo story of Ukrainian Photographer Hanna Hrabarska and her mom\, which portrays their escape story from Ukraine in the first days of war. \n“I’m curious\, how were people feeling and what were they doing the day before the Second World War?” I thought about it for a moment. “Well\, I don’t know\,” I told my friend. “Probably\, the same as us”. \nWe finished the dinner and took a walk around Kyiv city center. We sat in a small cafe to drink cappuccinos and gossip. I went home early\, feeling a wave of anxiety. Early the next morning\, I was lying in bed in complete darkness. Suddenly\, I heard the sound of an explosion. \nI turned on my phone. The news declared: “Putin Invades Ukraine.” \nMy mom was still offline\, so I decided to give her a couple more hours of peaceful rest in my native city\, Kryviy Rih. When we finally spoke around 7 a.m. on Feb. 24\, I heard sounds on my mother’s end. They too were explosions. \nThat’s how our journey started. It took Hanna and her mom 1 week to flee Ukraine. \nIf you would like to hear a full story\, join us for Hanna’s public talk and exhibition. \nAbout Untold Ukraine \nUntold Ukraine is a collaborative art event series showcasing contemporary Ukrainian culture through different media. Our main goals are to share what we love about our culture and raise money to help Ukraine in its fight for freedom. \nPhotography Exhibition is a part of event series by Untold Ukraine. \nAll events are charitable. All ticket proceeds and donations will go straight to Ukrainian organizations working on the ground.

SUMMARY:Paul Hughes - Bastard Blue
DESCRIPTION:“For a long time I struggled with blue\, for me it was the colour of logic\, order\, organisation. And while I’ve nothing against logic\, it’s never been how I work. My process doesn’t do order\, my paintings don’t start with a destination. Instead they’re born in the chaos of the doing\, painted on the ground\, they evolve\, they mutate\, depending on the light that day\, the music I’m listening to\, as I move in constant motion around them. And that wasn’t blue. \nAnd then\, like the lover in a Charlotte Bronte or Jane Austen story that the protagonist first hates but then loves\, blue revealed itself. I started surrounded by the wild elemental scapes of land\, sea and sky\, between the Beara and the Iveragh on the Atlantic-lashed coasts near Kenmare. There\, looking at its blues\, sometimes for days on end\, I saw blue wasn’t order or calm\, it was wild\, seductive\, raw\, ungrounded. That it wasn’t one shade\, it was a million. That far from being the reassuring presence of the paintbox\, was the maddest\, craziest\, bastard there was. That like the sirens of Greek mythology\, could change from softness to malevolence in a split second. \nAnd that’s what I wanted to paint.” \n– Paul Hughes
