SUMMARY:Kenny Morris - A Banshee Left Wailing
DESCRIPTION:Now residing in Cork\, Londoner Kenny Morris was at the epicentre of the creative maelstrom that was punk in the mid-1970s. In 1976\, he was the drummer in Sid Vicious’s The Flowers of Romance\, and he rose to fame as the drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees from 1977 to 1979\, imbuing their sound with his unprecedented technique. An attendee for one year at London’s Camberwell School of Art in 1976\, Morris left to join Siouxsie for three whirlwind years before returning to his fine art cravings while also studying film. He worked with the video/filmmaker John Maybury (Pet Shop Boys West End Girls and Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares To You videos and Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon\, The Jacket\, The Edge of Love) before his own short film\, La Main Morte\, premiered at the International Berlin Film Festival in 1986 and was screened at many other European festivals. \nSince moving to Cork in 2010\, Kenny has held several exhibitions there and in Waterford\, including five of his short films and improvised musical performances with his group\, The Modern Raze. SUMMARY:Brian Dillon (The Line) - White Blood Cells
DESCRIPTION:A sister piece to the album\, Red Blood Cells & Righteousness\, which Dillon has released under his moniker\, The Line\, this piece is a collaboration with photographer and visual artist Mark McGuinness\, which aims to explore the role of global supply chains in our modern\, global world. \nThe piece exists in six separate movements\, which will be played concurrently via MP3 players and headphones\, in the gallery space. Each movement is made up of ambient soundscapes and violent electronic drumbeats\, which build around an array of speech samples discussing the topics at hand. \n  \nA live performance will take place on the opening night by a music group made up of migrants and asylum seekers. They will perform a short set of songs from their home countries\, 6pm\, Thursday 25th January 2024. DESCRIPTION:The Complex building previously operated as a banana wholesale market. This laid the foundation for the development of the exhibition as artists Laura Ní Fhlaibhín and Sean Lynch peeled off in their own directions. \nElements to be found among the newly commissioned artworks include a discussion about the use of ethylene gas in the banana ripening process\, terracotta sculptures on the facade of Dublin City Fruit and Vegetable Market\, St Mary’s Abbey founded 1139\, over five hundred skeletal remains found nearby\, a tour of Dublinia Viking Museum\, the floor and subterranean levels of Lidl on Aungier Street\, bananas cast in bronze\, three mini fridges turned into a live wormery\, the European Nightcrawler\, the Red Wiggler\, Solas na Glasraí by Rachel Joynt\, numerous attempted visits to see the Van Gogh Experience\, a N. Smyth & Co. SUMMARY:Paula Pohli: CONNEXIONS
DESCRIPTION:CONNEXIONS: Sidewalks is an exhibition created by artist Paula Pohli about ‘Walking’\, that is\, walking the sidewalks of Dublin. The prints and paintings in CONNEXIONS were inspired by Dublin City. In particular\, Paula connects places in Dublin to James Joyce’s books. \nPaula Pohli\, an artist\, walks in Dublin. She is not a Flâneur. She walks as an artist walks: looks\, observes\, experiences. This exhibition is her personal visual record of graphic images of Dublin City. Both an artist and author\, James Joyce was born in Dublin and both are and were great walkers. On her Dublin walks she connected the smells and the feel of the city to some of James Joyce’s literary works. \n‘I was born in Dublin. I moved into the north inner city in Dublin about 2006. The energetic and visual impact of Dublin life and Liffey-life excited my imagination. I read ‘Ulysses’ to educate and enhance my visual experience of walking around Dublin City. I\, as an artist discovered my very own Dublin and I created prints mostly of what city life presented to me on my walks.’ \nThe artist enjoys walking and exploring the sidewalks of Dublin; walking from Grafton Street on the South side to The Dublin Spire on the North side is her focal point. \nDublin Only is near O’Connell Bridge in the city centre\nBorn in Dublin Paula Pohli lives in rural Ireland. She travels extensively and her travels confirm to her that ‘her’ Dublin and James Joyce’s ‘Dublin’ are still active and ‘alive\, alive O’. It is of course a New Dublin. Paula is a cyclist too. She biked it to Bull Island and Dublin Port. Paula has a tendency to look downwards and sideways down the sidewalks of Dublin. After rain the sidewalks of Dublin smell different. She looks at coal lids and covers. She looks down laneways: ‘Moland Place’ (linocut). The artist looks downwards into the Liffey: ‘Dublin\, only’ is a painting that captures the seaweed curtains that drape the Liffey walls\, but only at low tide. ‘Poddle into Liffey’ is a linocut of two rivers meeting one another: the Poddle and the Liffey. This a connection to Thomas Moore’s poem\,  ‘The Meeting of the Waters’ and Joyce referenced it in Ulysses. \n\nOnly at Low Tide is out at the Bull Wall in Dollymount\n\nIn Ulysses\, Joyce called Sparrows ‘hopping mice’. The sparrows in her Sparrows painting pestered Paula in Mayo for food. She connected them to Joyce. Paula smiled as she painted the sparrows in egg tempera. Joyce wrote: ‘Sparrows look like hopping mice’. Food features in Joyce’s books. Bloom’s breakfast is an olfactory reading experience for Paula Pohli. \nFinally\, the artist does look upwards. The Dublin Spire drew her artistic eye upwards to the Dublin sky:  she created a linocut of the Spire\, Dublin Apparition.  This print won third prize in an International Print Biennial in the Centre for Contemporary Printmaking in Connecticut in the US. Her mini prints featured in over 30-40 International Mini Print Biennials in the US\, UK\, Bulgaria\, Egypt\, Germany\, etc. She has had many solo shows in Dublin\, in Ireland\, as well as in Holland and Germany. Paula’s prints and paintings are in the National Gallery of Ireland\, in Dublin. \nPaula does not philosophise about Dublin. She makes prints and paintings of Dublin City for its own sake.  However\, the artist is deeply grateful to James Joyce for spending his lifetime writing about Dublin. \nCONNEXIONS II in 2024\, will be about country walks and rural wildlife. \nCONNEXIONS\, an exhibition primarily of Linocuts\, some egg tempera and brush drawings on paper by Paula Pohli is at The James Joyce Centre\, 35 North Great Georges Street\, Dublin D01 WK44. \nThis exhibition continues into 2024 and can be viewed from Monday to Saturday between 10 am to 4pm. \nFeature Image: Finn’s Hotel is where James Joyce met Nora \nAll images by Paula Pohli

SUMMARY:John Kindness - The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Kindness describes himself as an “artist\, currently completing a visual version of Homer’s Odyssey”. He enjoys working with objects which have been through “the patina of usage” and uses traditional methods such as mosaic and fresco painting to explore contemporary themes and defy conventional notions of the fine art object – the hazards of Scylla and Charybdis are engraved onto a toilet seat\, Odysseus’s teenage son listens to albums by ‘The Sirens’ and ‘The Gorgons’. In his mimicking of the visual styles of Ancient Greek vase-painting\, he suggests that the residues of contemporary life will be the artefacts of the future.

SUMMARY:Morag Myerscough with The Local Community in Tallaght - A Good Night’s Sleep
DESCRIPTION:We first encountered the work of Morag Myerscough on these shores when the late John Reynolds brought the UK artist over to create the Together Bandstand for the inaugural edition of All Together Now in 2018. “John loved my ‘Temple of Agape’ and I wanted to make a new piece of work that was unique to his new festival\,” said Morag. \nNow she returns with A Good Night’s Sleep – a bold\, colourful\, immersive intervention which is the culmination of over ten months working with the Irish Refugee Council’s Youth Service\, DoubleTake Studio\, New Horizon HUB\, and the Tallaght Ukrainian community to explore the multifaceted theme of ‘belonging’. \nThe participants shared their hopes and dreams\, fears and struggles in workshops led by the artist. The groups connected using the power of colour\, word\, and sound to express themselves. \nRua Red until March 3.

DESCRIPTION:Sean Atmos is a Dublin based visual artist well known for his large-scale murals & engaging canvas works. Coming from a background in graffiti\, Sean began his creative journey in 2006 & has been developing his practice since. Sean uses a base of typography in his work. He abstracts the rigid forms of lettering\, to create a geometric landscape for viewers to decode. \n \n‘Alternative Paths’ is an evolution of Sean’s signature style and primarily takes shape through vibrant hand painted typographic overlays. Sean’s personal narrative is subtly woven throughout the work\, exploring the parallels between his creative process and athletic pursuits. \nAs an avid runner\, Sean has curated a series of engagement events at Atelier Now exploring similar themes of artistic and athletic development\, sobriety and wellness. The events are open to the public and include a social run and an open discussion between artist and athlete. DESCRIPTION:For the past seven years\, Irish artist Gary Farrelly’s practice has manifested as an artistic duo practice known as the Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence\, with German artist Chris Dreier. \nThis October marks their return to Dublin with two performances. The first\, hosted at the Hugh Lane has been commissioned by Padraic E Moore as part of the I’ll Be Your Mirror program—a response to the Andy Warhol exhibition. This piece delves into their distinct bureaucratic and ritualistic approach to hero worship. They’ll be activating office blocks real and imagined as ritualistic technologies within the performance’s framework. \nA week later\, they’ll be taking to the stage at the Alternating Currents Festival\, organized by Dublin Digital Radio\, where they’ve had a radio show on the station since 2020. SUMMARY:Andy Warhol: Three Times Out
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a while since a blockbuster salute to Warhol has hit town\, IMMA in 2007 to be precise. Arguably\, the best known and most influential artist of the 20th Century what fascinates us now is his appeal or relevance to a new TikTok-ified audience – will they care for his pop art? How well will Silver Clouds translate to Insta reels? It’s almost a comfort blanket of sorts for older generations as they embrace the soup cans and nod to Nixon. What actually caught our attention is the room in which his lesser known early drawings around love\, sex and desire are housed. They show the range of his talent from the get-go. His ‘Electric Chair’ series which dates back to 1963 still resonates – there’s a Xeroxed style replication which tightropes the viewer into questioning their relationship to the dark subject matter whilst appreciating his colourful pop take on it.

For over four decades\, Magor’s practice has primarily centred on sculpture\, exploring our persistent and complicated relationship with things. She divides objects into two categories “those that are provided by the world\, and those that I provide by making them in the studio.” Using casting processes akin to photography\, determining positives and negatives\, she renders familiar objects in her studio into gypsum or rubber and often in repetition. You have Richard Avedon shooting Groucho Marx and Ezra Pound\, Yousuf Karsh getting the likes of Churchill\, Einstein\, Costeau\, Ali\, Hemingway and Georgia O’Keeffe to stare down the lens.  \nBernice Abbott framed the most instantly recognisable image of James Joyce back in 1925. However\, what turns out to be most compelling is actual seeing the faces of people we may know of but struggle to identify – Chagall (Kertesz)\, Miro (Brassai) and Mondrian (Newman) are such cases. And arguably one of the most affecting images is one where the face is turned the opposite way in the case of Karsh’s shot of cellist Pablo Cassals. DESCRIPTION:After the sensational retrospective of Patricia Hurl this spring\, the West Wing in IMMA continues to shine a light of elderly women who work needs to be hailed in life rather than death. Renewed Language represents the first exhibition here of artist\, activist\, and educator Howardena Pindell. \nPrimarily an abstract painter who faced criticism in the late ‘60s\, “the feeling was\, the work should be about the Black experience.” This minimalism beckons you to look closer for subtle reveals which one can freely interpret as they wish. Pindell became the first Black woman to become a curator at (MoMA) in the 1970s where she worked for a decade before resigning. In video work such as Free\, White and 21 (1980)\, Pindell pivots to confront racial discrimination more pointedly. Elsewhere\, she addresses AIDS\, how racism intersects with power structures and the climate crisis. DESCRIPTION:To some of us James Hanly is Mr RHA\, the artist we most associate with the space in terms of his presence there and continual association. Recast is a body of over 100 drawings of statues which he worked on during lockdown in his home studio on the North Strand. \n \nDrawn from photos\, thumbnails and notes of hundreds of statues he encountered over two decades of travel. SUMMARY:Shades of Life - An Exhibition By Polina Kozka
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian artist\, Polina Kozka embarks on her debut solo exhibition at Gallery X in July with a collection of paintings that reflects her love of texture and design. \nPolina believes that our space creates our mood and that the true nature of her artworks is revealed in interaction with space. She often uses gold in her art – an echo of her studying gold embroidery – which is valuable for its play of light. As an interior designer\, she believes that the use of texture allows her to enrich different spaces with depth and shadows while leaving room for the imagination. \n \nPolina is from the center of Ukraine\, near Poltava. She studied Gold Art Embroidery at the Odessa Theological Seminary\, where she graduated with honors. March 2022 saw her arrive in Ireland. Surviving in the new rapidly changing realities of life\, Polina continued to paint. She has been volunteering at the Double Take Studios at Rua Red with Ukrainians with special needs. DESCRIPTION:Of course\, first and foremost\, the star attraction here will always be the Casino which was designed by Sir William Chambers in the late eighteenth-century as a neoclassical pleasure house for James Caulfeild\, 1st Earl of Charlemont. Ceres and Bacchus hold dominion from the roof above four Egyptian lions\, winged satyrs\, ox skulls and mysterious twin-tailed merfolk perched on the roof’s two urns. Take in one of their daily tours at 10am\, 12am\, 2pm and 4pm (until the end of October) and learn about the intricacies of the building such as the fasces moulding of a bundle of rods with an axe which we discovered is where the word fascism derives from. (thanks Robert) \n \nWithin the building you will find 41 works owned by either the OPW or Department of Finance which are themed around people within the deceptively large number of rooms. There’s Becks Butler’s ‘Loopies Field’ series which we featured In the Frame in 2020. Christopher Banahan’s ‘Lizzie in Interior’ sits atop a walnut cabinet in the China Closet framed by hand-painted Chinese wallpaper (lead photo). Amanda Doran’s ‘Beast Mode’\, Garry Loughlin’s ‘Evdokia’ and Mónika Bögyös ‘Untitled’ caught our attention whether seen beside gold painted Ionic fluted (grooved) columns or with Apollo’s head emerging from a sunburst in the ceiling. Now we have Lavinia Fontana who is a ‘trailblazer’. The late sixteenth-century Bolognese artist is best known for her successful portraiture\, but also worked in the genres of mythology and religious painting. \n \nThis tentpole summer exhibition in the National Gallery will explore Fontana’s extraordinary life through her paintings and drawings\, offering insight into the cultural climate that enabled the artist to flourish as a female artist of the period. SUMMARY:Irish Gothic - Patricia Hurl
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to catch this major retrospective on the work of Patricia Hurl. Spanning over 40 years and featuring over 70 of the artist’s expressionist paintings and drawings. Hurl’s oeuvre is by nature political  and\, since the 1980s\, her work has explored loss\, pain\, frustration and loneliness. Hurl is part of the Na Cailleacha collective who explore being female\, older and attendant stereotypes. “There is a certain haunting simplicity in the gesture of each stoke and an understanding of the gestural power which fills each canvas\,” says museum director Annie Fletcher about Hurl’s work. \nIMMA until May 21.

DESCRIPTION:Niamh O’Malley represented Ireland at the 59th Venice Biennale Art Exhibition last year. Her pavilion installation is on a homecoming tour including to her own studio base where she fabricated the original work.
