DESCRIPTION:Black Church Print Studio presents Out of Time curated by Áine O’Hara\, recipient of Black Church Emerging Curator Award 2025. \n“Rather than bend disabled bodies and minds to meet the clock\, crip time bends the clock to meet disabled bodies and minds” Alison Kafer \nTime is often considered a linear process\, we move from the past to the present and forward to the future. Crip time is a form of time travel. Disability and illness have the ability to pull us out of linear\, progressive time with its standard life stages and thrust us into a realm of erratic acceleration\, tedious delays and sudden endings. Disabled and sick bodies and minds do not often conform to a normative idea of time. \nThe medical terminology of illness attempts to reimpose linearity\, discussing chronic conditions\, progression\, terminal stages\, relapses and phase. But those living in crip time know that experience is never linear and quietly – or not so quietly – resent the calm straightforwardness of those who exist within the confines of normative time. \nAisling Conroy\, An Gee Chan\, Caoimhe Dalton\, Jamila Prowse\, Paul Roy and Catherine Togher-Ward have used printmaking\, painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, mark making\, textiles and video work as an alternative way to keep time\, to communicate and to connect. Time is recorded in movement and creation rather than scheduling\, deadlines and hours. \n \nOut of Time invites the audience out of their daily lives into the world of crip time. Rather than us bending to meet commonplace capitalistic versions of scheduling\, deadlines\, hours\, crip time offers you a glimpse into an alternate timeline. SUMMARY:Japan - Richard Gorman
DESCRIPTION:Japan presents over two decades of Richard Gorman’s celebrated works on paper\, focusing on the motif of the circle. For over thirty years\, Gorman has been visiting Echizen\, a mountainous region of Japan\, to handcraft washi paper alongside the skilled artisans of the family-run Iwano Heizaburo paper mill. \n \nThe mill uses a traditional technique in which kōzo (mulberry) pulp is boiled\, beaten\, then set in sukibune trays\, before being pressed and dried. In some of Gorman’s works\, gouache is applied to the surface of the finished paper; for others\, Gorman developed a process in which dye is soaked directly into the pulp then shaped in moulds\, allowing for a deeper saturation of colour. DESCRIPTION:Dubliner Fergus Feehily returns from his current Berlin homestead to present an exhibition that focuses on place and illumination. The exhibition is situated in deep winter\, taking place on both sides of the solstice while making associations with places as far-reaching as the megalithic site of Newgrange and the neon streets of Shinjuku\, Tokyo. The title\, Fortune House\, conjures a vision of a site where luck\, prosperity\, or a glimpse into the future might be found. For this exhibition\, a new artist’s book\, The Horse and The Rider\, brings together many reflections on thinking about and experiencing art\, and alternative ways of seeing and understanding artistic values. \nFeehily’s self-reflective writing moves between disciplines\, chronologies and geographies. SUMMARY:Zodiac Netsuke: Animals of the Japanese Zodiac
DESCRIPTION:On display for the first time in over a decade\, Netsuke are small\, intricately carved sculptures originating in 17th century Japan. Originally simple button fasteners\, used to secure pouches\, inrō (compartmented boxes)\, and smoking or writing accessories to sashes\, they quickly evolved to become fashion statements and platforms for intricate design and storytelling. The netsuke in Chester Beatty’s collection date from the 18th and 19th centuries and depict the twelve zodiac animals\, celebrated in Japan during New Year. \n \nThese beautifully carved pieces offer insights into the animals’ symbolic meanings and their place in Japanese culture. SUMMARY:Paul Winstanley - Arcadia
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Paul Winstanley\, comprising a new series of paintings titled Arcadia\, a continuation of his recent series The Falls\, plus the last of his critically acclaimed Veil series\, a signature body of work initiated in 1999. \nTitled Arcadia\, suggesting ‘something ancient being revisited’\, this new body of work looks towards early 19th-century paintings of idyllic mountainous landscapes – pictures that have largely lost their significance through the ‘gauze of history’. Seizing upon the more abstract elements of these works\, Winstanley revisits the genre from a contemporary standpoint – first ‘degrading’ inkjet prints of the source images\, stripping back detail using a process of wax resist\, before recreating them as paintings. Through this process of reinvention\, the landscapes become spatial encounters – removed from the specificity of place\, they instead tune our attention towards atmosphere\, presence\, and spiritual charge\, all while keeping the ‘shadow’ of the original image. \nThe exhibition runs at Kerlin Gallery from November 29th 2024 until January 16th 2025. \nFeature Image: Landscape with Clouds II\, 2024\, oil on panel\, 56 x 42 cm / 22 x 16.5 in

DESCRIPTION:With her recent switch from ceramics to works in felted wool\, Annika Berglund’s practice has gone from strength to strength with her Corona virus piece having been acquired by the National Museum of Ireland for their Covid collection. She has this to say about her exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery: \n“Tapestries show textile as art by displaying it so it can be seen. My work is not woven\, but the idea of the weave is important for this body of work. Woven textile can be very simple or incredibly complex\, but relies on the interconnection of warp and weft. In my thinking about this work\, the warp encompasses the themes\, preconditions and constants that create a baseline or continuity for your life; that which will always be with you\, for good or bad. \nThe weft\, the threads that go across the warp\, grow the fabric with each new addition\, pull together the weave and create ever new patterns. These are like new events\, people and circumstances that come and go\, or stay; their contribution growing the weave and creating richness and complexity\, whether they just make a single appearance or are part of a recurring pattern.”\n– Annika Berglund \nIn addition to wall-pieces\, the exhibition will also feature a selection of the artist’s new series of wearable art in felted-wool. \nThe exhibition is on display at The Olivier Cornet Gallery until December 15th.

SUMMARY:Who’ll Care\, Who’ll Even Remember? In Memoriam John Balance
DESCRIPTION:Who’ll Care\, Who’ll Even Remember? is an art exhibition honouring the late influential musician and artist John Balance\, best known as a co-founder of the experimental music group Coil\, in collaboration with his partner Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson. He was responsible for the majority of Coil’s vocals\, lyrics and chants\, along with synthesizers and various other instruments both commonplace and esoteric. Outside Coil he collaborated with Cultural Amnesia\, Nurse with Wound\, Death in June\, Psychic TV\, Current 93\, produced several Nine Inch Nails remixes and wrote soundtracks\, most notably for Derek Jaman’s Blue. \n \nThe exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of his premature passing\, and will have two primary influences: archival and contemporary. SUMMARY:A Musical Instrument - Justin Fitzpatrick
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery is justifiably excited to present A Musical Instrument\, the first solo exhibition in Ireland by Justin Fitzpatrick. \nThe title A Musical Instrument references a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning\, in which the pagan god Pan transforms a reed from the riverbed into a panpipe\, not knowing the pain caused by ‘Making a poet out of a man’. Music-playing\, and by extension\, all creative expression\, is positioned as something mediumistic\, involuntary\, and yet also a source of struggle. In Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, however\, it also appears to foster a kind of connectivity: spines become injected with musical notes; bodies seem to communicate through diagrammatic wave particles; tangled webs of veins\, nerves\, and arteries imply a porosity of self\, a consciousness that expands beyond our physical bodies. \nIn Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, figurative forms appear enmeshed within complex systems of processes\, sounds\, memories\, and ideas. Bodies morph into musical and mechanical apparatus\, while objects become animated or anthropomorphic. In one painting\, a human heart is swapped for a glass armonica\, an 18th-century instrument with melancholic tones once thought to induce madness. In another\, a masked figure plucks at the strings of a suspension bridge\, becoming a self-playing Aeolian harp. \nA Musical Instrument by Justin Fitzpatrick runs at the Kerlin Gallery from 25 Octobr to 23 November. DESCRIPTION:The exhibition La Grande Illusion hosted at Hugh Lane Gallery reveals artist Brian Maguire’s uncompromising fight against social injustices and their legacies. The display includes art from a particularly active period for the artist\, 2007-2024\, as he attempted to document the nature of war and its impact on the disenfranchised and our environment. Maguire’s work encapsulates social issues including class\, gender\, and post-colonialism\, but the exhibit focuses on his representations of the fragility of human rights. DESCRIPTION:In a ‘booming’ economy marked by widespread homelessness\, ‘The Boom is Back’ quietly captures the absurd exploitation facing ‘Generation Rent’ by playing with the increasingly impermanent concept of ‘home’ in contemporary Ireland. It challenges viewers to reconsider their own definitions of ‘home’ and to reflect on the societal value placed on an individual’s life. \nAward-winning filmmaker and photographer\, Greg Byrne\, presents his debut photography exhibition\, ‘The Boom is Back\,’ at The Bank at The Digital Hub on James’s Street\, Dublin 8. Running from September 27th to 29th 2024\, the exhibition comprises 8 large-scale photographs that depict a catalogue of increasingly bizarre items for auction\, found objects that Byrne discovered upon moving into his rented apartment. The show plays with the increasingly impermanent concept of ‘home’ in contemporary Ireland\, and questions the value our society places on an individual human life amid a housing and homeless emergency this domestic existence. \nByrne says\, “The essence of my series aims to challenge the very concept of ‘home’ in Ireland in 2024. In a nation boasting an €8.4 billion budget surplus\, the housing crisis and rising homelessness are not mere accidents of fate—they are the consequences of intentional policy decisions. Through these images\, I invite you to reflect: Can a space ever truly be yours when the presence of those who lived there before still lingers? Can a house feel like a home when the shadow of eviction is always looming? DESCRIPTION:‘Twofold’\, a new solo exhibition by artist Liliane Tomasko at Kerlin Gallery\, presents five new large-scale diptychs alongside a new series of works on paper. Tomasko’s signature\, bold lyricism and decisive use of colour is emblazoned across twinned panels of aluminium or linen. This diptych format positions tone\, form and texture in dialogue back and forth across surfaces\, sparking new resonances and shaping our understanding of each panel in relation to its neighbour. DESCRIPTION:Friendly Piece\, an installation by Crash Ensemble at Mermaid Arts Centre\, is based on a piece by composer Andrew Hamilton exploring friendliness and loving kindness\, asking the question\, “can music be kind?” \nCommissioned in 2019 and written during Andrew’s time as composer in residence with Crash Ensemble\, the piece explores the ambiguous space in which music is performed. This recorded piece alludes to hovering between things\, to evade being pinned down. To honour this milestone\, the University of Galway\, custodian of Robinson’s extensive archive\, has curated a selection of materials that both inspired and feature in the documentary Mrs Robinson.\n\nCoinciding with the release of this film\, this special exhibition\, hosted at the Light House Cinema in Dublin and Pálás Cinemas Galway\, offers the public a rare glimpse into the remarkable archive of one of Ireland’s most influential and respected figures. Curated by Niamh Ní Charra\, project archivist at the University of Galway\, this mini-exhibition brings to life the profound impact of Robinson’s work and her ongoing legacy in the fight for justice and equality.\n\n\nThe exhibition showcases a rich collection of materials spanning over six decades of Mary Robinson’s distinguished career\, giving visitors an opportunity to explore reproductions of documents and artifacts from her time as a barrister\, legislator\, senator\, and professor\, as well as her tenure as President of Ireland. The archive also includes materials from her global roles\, including UN High Commissioner for Human Rights\, UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and Climate Change\, Chair of The Elders\, and founder of Realizing Rights and the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice.\n\n \n\n\nThe film\, directed by Aoife Kelleher and produced by Cormac Hargaden and Trisha Canning for Loosehorse delivers Mary Robinson’s story in her own words for the first time. DESCRIPTION:“Meantime is a collection of paintings by Kathy Tynan made over the past two years. The title is partly borrowed from the 1983 film of the same name by Tynan’s favourite director\, Mike Leigh. It’s also a reflection on a question posed last winter by Tynan’s then three-year-old son\, Frank. Waiting for friends to arrive at a holiday cottage in Wexford\, while his mother stacked firelogs and patted radiators to see if the heating was coming on\, Frank asked: Is it the meantime? \nThe scenes depicted in this exhibition take place in the meantime. Time passes slowly in these paintings. While far more significant events take place in the wider world\, for the artist\, a child grows and a terrier ages within a familiar landscape.” – Extract from a commissioned text written by Ingrid Lyons to accompany the exhibition. \nKathy Tynan is an artist from Dublin who practice is primarily based in paint. She won The Golden Fleece\, special award in 2020 and was shortlisted for The Zurich Portrait Prize and the Hennessey-Craig Prize for Painting in 2019. In 2018\, Tynan carried out a three month residency at the Cité International des Arts\, Paris. The collection features all the very best Irish writers’ possessions that played an influential part in their accomplished lives\, including Samuel Beckett’s telephone from his Paris apartment\, Brendan Behan’s typewriter and union membership card\, Mary Lavin’s childhood teddy bear\, Frank O’Connor’s spectacles\, and many more. For this exhibition\, Claxton has staged scenes from ‘the party of the century’ in Dublin Castle. Drawing on his appreciation for British photographer Cecil Beaton\, and even sourcing some of the original costumes from that night in Venice. A prolific and kinetic artist\, Claxton’s work is always thought provoking\, and relevant.
