SUMMARY:Geraldine Carton: Sisters\, Not Twins
DESCRIPTION:Dublin based artist Geraldine Carton has spent two years creating the works for this provocative and beautiful exhibition which celebrate women and their bodies. A series of figurative nude paintings concluding with a Wall of Boobs\, one hundred individual breast portraits. \n“A celebration of sisterhood and imperfection\, this show shines a light on a lived experience so often ignored in Irish society\, that of women. In the figurative paintings we see depictions of women as refreshingly multi-dimensional – expressing anger\, laughter\, exhaustion and mischief. These images tell stories and all are marked with the raw vulnerability of pink\, brown\, black and beige flesh.” \nNovember 7th – November 17th\, City Assembly House\, 58 William St S\, Dublin 2 \ngeraldinecarton.com \n@geraldinecarton

SUMMARY:A Musical Instrument - Justin Fitzpatrick
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery is justifiably excited to present A Musical Instrument\, the first solo exhibition in Ireland by Justin Fitzpatrick. \nThe title A Musical Instrument references a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning\, in which the pagan god Pan transforms a reed from the riverbed into a panpipe\, not knowing the pain caused by ‘Making a poet out of a man’. Music-playing\, and by extension\, all creative expression\, is positioned as something mediumistic\, involuntary\, and yet also a source of struggle. In Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, however\, it also appears to foster a kind of connectivity: spines become injected with musical notes; bodies seem to communicate through diagrammatic wave particles; tangled webs of veins\, nerves\, and arteries imply a porosity of self\, a consciousness that expands beyond our physical bodies. \nIn Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, figurative forms appear enmeshed within complex systems of processes\, sounds\, memories\, and ideas. Bodies morph into musical and mechanical apparatus\, while objects become animated or anthropomorphic. In one painting\, a human heart is swapped for a glass armonica\, an 18th-century instrument with melancholic tones once thought to induce madness. In another\, a masked figure plucks at the strings of a suspension bridge\, becoming a self-playing Aeolian harp. \nA Musical Instrument by Justin Fitzpatrick runs at the Kerlin Gallery from 25 Octobr to 23 November. Opening Reception: Thursday 24 October\, 6–8pm \nFeature Image: The Glass Armonica (Dying at my music)\, 2024\, oil on linen\, oak frame\, 183 x 143 cm framed

SUMMARY:Ishmael Claxton x Sean Hillen
DESCRIPTION:Totally Dublin favourite Ishmael Claxton is exhibiting a show with his friend and mentor\, Sean Hillen\, representing the emerging and established side of art-making\, contrasting youth and maturity in an exhibition “reminiscent of collaborations between Basquiat and Warhol.” \nBilled as a harmonious duel between two lens based artists who challenge perceptions and lay bare obscure realities\, audiences are invited to watch as the duo dance the sociopolitical canvas as art warriors\, swinging for the marginalised and under-represented. \nThe exhibition opens at 6pm on October 4th 2024 and runs through to October 21st at TON GALLERY\, 25A Temple Lane South\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 2\, D02 KV62 \nPhoto by Enda Burke

SUMMARY:La Grande Illusion
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition La Grande Illusion hosted at Hugh Lane Gallery reveals artist Brian Maguire’s uncompromising fight against social injustices and their legacies. The display includes art from a particularly active period for the artist\, 2007-2024\, as he attempted to document the nature of war and its impact on the disenfranchised and our environment. Maguire’s work encapsulates social issues including class\, gender\, and post-colonialism\, but the exhibit focuses on his representations of the fragility of human rights. The exhibition will continue until 23rd of March 2025. Admission is free. \nHugh Lane Gallery\, Parnell Sq\, D1.

SUMMARY:Greg Byrne - The Boom Is Back
DESCRIPTION:In a ‘booming’ economy marked by widespread homelessness\, ‘The Boom is Back’ quietly captures the absurd exploitation facing ‘Generation Rent’ by playing with the increasingly impermanent concept of ‘home’ in contemporary Ireland. It challenges viewers to reconsider their own definitions of ‘home’ and to reflect on the societal value placed on an individual’s life. \nAward-winning filmmaker and photographer\, Greg Byrne\, presents his debut photography exhibition\, ‘The Boom is Back\,’ at The Bank at The Digital Hub on James’s Street\, Dublin 8. Running from September 27th to 29th 2024\, the exhibition comprises 8 large-scale photographs that depict a catalogue of increasingly bizarre items for auction\, found objects that Byrne discovered upon moving into his rented apartment. The show plays with the increasingly impermanent concept of ‘home’ in contemporary Ireland\, and questions the value our society places on an individual human life amid a housing and homeless emergency this domestic existence. \nByrne says\, “The essence of my series aims to challenge the very concept of ‘home’ in Ireland in 2024. In a nation boasting an €8.4 billion budget surplus\, the housing crisis and rising homelessness are not mere accidents of fate—they are the consequences of intentional policy decisions. Through these images\, I invite you to reflect: Can a space ever truly be yours when the presence of those who lived there before still lingers? Can a house feel like a home when the shadow of eviction is always looming? What does “home” mean when ownership is out of reach and security in renting is uncertain?” \nThe opening reception takes place on September 27th\, 2024\, from 7.00pm to 11.00pm\, featuring a drinks reception\, interactive installs and DJ till late. Admission to the exhibition is free\, with donations encouraged to support local housing charities which will be available via scannable QR codes found throughout the venue. \ngregbyrnephoto.com \nThe Bank at The Digital Hub James’s Street\, Dublin D08 C2PR

SUMMARY:Liliane Tomasko’s ‘Twofold’
DESCRIPTION:‘Twofold’\, a new solo exhibition by artist Liliane Tomasko at Kerlin Gallery\, presents five new large-scale diptychs alongside a new series of works on paper. Tomasko’s signature\, bold lyricism and decisive use of colour is emblazoned across twinned panels of aluminium or linen. This diptych format positions tone\, form and texture in dialogue back and forth across surfaces\, sparking new resonances and shaping our understanding of each panel in relation to its neighbour. These paintings must contend with two distinct voices – sometimes finding harmony\, elsewhere tension; forging complex relationships. \n“Larger shapes\, suggestive of figures\, come in and out of focus\, fragmenting and coming back together in the mind’s eye. Tomasko’s longstanding interest in mythologies is also apparent in this ‘Twofold’\, reflecting on narratives of equilibrium and justice\, such as the ancient concept of the weighing of the soul.” \nLiliane Tomasko’s ‘Twofold’ is at Kerlin Gallery\, Anne’s Lane\, Dublin 2 from September 13th – October 19th 2024

SUMMARY:Incantations - Aisling Conroy
DESCRIPTION:Laois/ Dublin based visual artist Aisling Conroy has launched a new solo exhibition in one of our favourite independent galleries. In this new body of work\, Conroy explores the metaphysical realm\, following the themes of sound\, vibration and cymatics. Working with paint\, print\, installation\, experimental film and sound\, Conroy coaxes the audience into a journey beyond the visible realm\, cusping on the unseen forces that shape our reality. \n“Throughout my practice I explore the idea of intention\, repetition and reincarnation\, drawing on influences from mystical and visionary art as well as sound and cymatics. My work combines texture\, colour and movement to create a heightened sense of introspection on the nature of existence. I create abstractions of the subconscious by using repeated motifs\, shapes\, colour and form in a very visceral way and always with an interest in spirituality and connecting to a higher consciousness”. \n@aisconroystudio \nAisling Conroy’s ‘Incantations’ runs at Tøn Gallery\, 25A Temple Lane South\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 2\, D02 KV62 from 29th August- 21st September 2024.

SUMMARY:Milksop - Niamh Hannaford
DESCRIPTION:milksop is the residue of a collection of Niamh Hannaford‘s thoughts which cluster around time\, usage\, environment\, complicity\, and care. Mirroring the dominant extraction economy and the industrialization of resources\, she creates a temporal sculpture which requires cyclical maintenance and endures decay and loss. \nThis exhibition explores the value of labour and ageing when liaising with the god of commerce. Sitting beside – and on – layers of exploitative practices. She (her and her family) repetitiously manifest frozen offerings. Manufacturing a milky banshee. That pesky lady which haunts our dreams\, and pressures our screens\, full of serums and vital boosts. \nOpening Saturday\, August 24th 4pm Thereafter it runs from Wed – Sat 1pm –6pm. SUMMARY:Pebbledash Wonderland - Shane Lynam
DESCRIPTION:Pebbledash Wonderland  is Shane Lynam‘s photographic account of his adopted home city\, Dublin. The exhibition builds on Lynam’s long standing explorations of urban space across Europe\, which has influenced his work toward new subjective and narrative concerns. The exhibition is Lynam’s third major body of work and follows on from his acclaimed book\, ‘Fifty High Seasons’\, considering modernist French resorts (2018)\, and ‘Contours’\, his exhibition in 2013. \n“Pebbledash Wonderland offers a timely reminder that the complex elements of a contemporary city are almost impossible to grasp in their entirety\, but must be felt\, lived\, and recorded\, in small\, seemingly insignificant moments. Returning over and over to the same sites\, Lynam obsessively photographed the city to create a series of subjective\, abstracted spaces that sit somewhere between reality and his own experience. Presented here for the first time in its entirety\, the exhibition invites the viewer on an imaginary walk through Pebbledash Wonderland.” \n24th August – 12th October\, Photo Museum Ireland\, Meeting House Square\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 2

SUMMARY:Friendly Piece Installation by Crash Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Friendly Piece\, an installation by Crash Ensemble at Mermaid Arts Centre\, is based on a piece by composer Andrew Hamilton exploring friendliness and loving kindness\, asking the question\, “can music be kind?” \nCommissioned in 2019 and written during Andrew’s time as composer in residence with Crash Ensemble\, the piece explores the ambiguous space in which music is performed. This recorded piece alludes to hovering between things\, to evade being pinned down. It explores friendliness and kindness giving you a ‘tiny bit of joy or even infuriating you’. \nInterweaving a live recording of Friendly Piece at Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2023\, this installation created by visual collaborator Emma Martin with production by Rob Kearns. \nOpen to all ages\, Friendly Piece will be installed on the stage Mermaid Arts Centre. \n\n\nThere’s also a workshop with Andrew and some members of Crash Ensemble on Thursday 22nd August from 6pm – 7.30pm – see full details here.

SUMMARY:From the Desk of... Mrs Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, Mary Robinson marked her 80th birthday. To honour this milestone\, the University of Galway\, custodian of Robinson’s extensive archive\, has curated a selection of materials that both inspired and feature in the documentary Mrs Robinson.\n\nCoinciding with the release of this film\, this special exhibition\, hosted at the Light House Cinema in Dublin and Pálás Cinemas Galway\, offers the public a rare glimpse into the remarkable archive of one of Ireland’s most influential and respected figures. Curated by Niamh Ní Charra\, project archivist at the University of Galway\, this mini-exhibition brings to life the profound impact of Robinson’s work and her ongoing legacy in the fight for justice and equality.\n\n\nThe exhibition showcases a rich collection of materials spanning over six decades of Mary Robinson’s distinguished career\, giving visitors an opportunity to explore reproductions of documents and artifacts from her time as a barrister\, legislator\, senator\, and professor\, as well as her tenure as President of Ireland. The archive also includes materials from her global roles\, including UN High Commissioner for Human Rights\, UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and Climate Change\, Chair of The Elders\, and founder of Realizing Rights and the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice.\n\n \n\n\nThe film\, directed by Aoife Kelleher and produced by Cormac Hargaden and Trisha Canning for Loosehorse delivers Mary Robinson’s story in her own words for the first time. SUMMARY:Kathy Tynan - Meantime
DESCRIPTION:“Meantime is a collection of paintings by Kathy Tynan made over the past two years. The title is partly borrowed from the 1983 film of the same name by Tynan’s favourite director\, Mike Leigh. It’s also a reflection on a question posed last winter by Tynan’s then three-year-old son\, Frank. Waiting for friends to arrive at a holiday cottage in Wexford\, while his mother stacked firelogs and patted radiators to see if the heating was coming on\, Frank asked: Is it the meantime? \nThe scenes depicted in this exhibition take place in the meantime. Time passes slowly in these paintings. While far more significant events take place in the wider world\, for the artist\, a child grows and a terrier ages within a familiar landscape.” – Extract from a commissioned text written by Ingrid Lyons to accompany the exhibition. \nKathy Tynan is an artist from Dublin who practice is primarily based in paint. She won The Golden Fleece\, special award in 2020 and was shortlisted for The Zurich Portrait Prize and the Hennessey-Craig Prize for Painting in 2019. In 2018\, Tynan carried out a three month residency at the Cité International des Arts\, Paris. Her work is held in collections such as Trinity College Dublin and the Arts Council of Ireland. \nKathy Tynan\, Meantime runs at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery from 8th August – 7th September 2024\nOpening Thursday 8th August | Reception from 6pm \nImage: Kathy Tynan\, Spring Painter\, oil on canvas\, 80 x 80 cm\, 2024

SUMMARY:When the Body Says Yes - Melanie Bonajo
DESCRIPTION:When the Body Says Yes is a culmination of videos\, performances\, installations\, and photographs by Melanie Bonajo – a queer\, non-binary\, sex revolutionist – that showcases intimacy in modern times. Bonajo visualises intimacy in a raw and anti-capitalist way\, fueled by the ever-present loneliness epidemic. As an artist\, filmmaker\, sexological bodyworker\, and somatic sex coach\, Bonajo is well-versed in the subject of intimacy and the lack thereof in society. They portray the feeling of desire\, want\, and connection\, harmonious to alienation\, and commodity-driven intimacy in a way that has never been seen before. Redefine your understanding of intimacy and gain witness to a sexual revolution. \nWhen the Body Says Yes – Melanie Bonajo is at IMMA – Baroque Chapel Royal Hospital Kilmainham\, Dublin 8\, until October 20th

SUMMARY:Acoustic Oceans - Mark Francis
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic Oceans is an exhibition of new paintings on canvas\, aluminium and paper by Mark Francis that beautifully captures the sensory experience of the modern age; the speed of movement of information and the way our eyes are stimulated by the complexities of personal data storage. \nThe works are bold stripes of vertical rich hues and patterned colour that suggest energy and modernity while the concept of sound entwines its way into the art as abstract noise transforms into patterns of light\, akin to the display of a studio mixing desk. \nAcoustic Oceans by Mark Francis is at Kerlin Gallery  Anne’s Lane\, South Anne Street\, D2 Until August 24th

DESCRIPTION:Glovebox Gallery’s latest exhibition by artist\, Mac Athlaoich\, showcases captivating oil paintings inspired by photo finish photography of sprinters. Amidst the success of Irish athletes in the Euro Championships preparing for the Olympics\, this exhibition comes around at the perfect time. The body form of pro athletes\, as they’re sprinting\, should always be studied how Athlaoich studies them. \nThe immense attention to detail in the muscle curvature and placements\, as well as capturing how sprinting feels while watching it is something you don’t want to miss out on. SUMMARY:Echoes of Elegance - Ishmael Claxton
DESCRIPTION:A re-imagining of the famed Baistegui Ball\, through the lens of fine artist and celebrated photographer Ishmael Claxton. For this exhibition\, Claxton has staged scenes from ‘the party of the century’ in Dublin Castle. Drawing on his appreciation for British photographer Cecil Beaton\, and even sourcing some of the original costumes from that night in Venice. A prolific and kinetic artist\, Claxton’s work is always thought provoking\, and relevant. The opening night June 7th offers the opportunity to speak with the artist himself about the work\, and with a gentleman as eloquent and generous as Ishmael\, that is an opportunity not to be missed. \n \n‘Echoes of Elegance’ by Ishmael Claxton Irish Georgian Society\, 58 William St South\, Dublin 2 \nOpening June 7th \nFrom New York City To The Heart of The Liberties – Ishmael Claxton \n

SUMMARY:Hilary Heron: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The first major retrospective exhibition of pioneering modernist sculptor Heron’s work since 1964\, IMMA’s glorious celebration of Heron’s work is a superb presentation that attempts to correct the ways that her work has been overlooked in Irish and international histories of modern sculpture and wholeheartedly succeeds. The Dublin born sculptor co-represented Ireland at the 1956 Venice Biennale alongside painter Louis le Brocquy and was a master welder\, a practice highly unusual for an Irish artist\, let alone a woman in the 1950s. \nBringing together work from national and international collections\, including carvings\, welding and castings\, Heron’s skilful pieces have an enduring influence on contemporary Irish sculpture and it’s wonderful to finally see her legacy celebrated in such exalted surroundings. \nHilary Heron: A Retrospective runs at the Irish Museum of Modern Art until 28th Oct.

SUMMARY:Late Works of Colin Harrison
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of twenty paintings chosen from those in the artist’s studio at the time of his passing in 2017\, and from the collection of his family\, this beautiful exhibit highlighst the artist’s extraordinary touch\, inimitable style and singular use of light and colour. His work consistently displays a consummately skilled draughtsmanship while playing with the viewer’s preconceptions of a unified pictorial space/time/narrative\, leading to moods and atmospheres that can be either unsettling or humorous depending on the viewer’s mindset. \nTaylor Galleries\, 16 Kildare Street\, Dublin 2\,  \n3 – 25 May\, 2024

SUMMARY:Inscapes - Rachael Johnson at The Red Stables Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Irish Artist Rachael Johnson returns to Dublin this month to present an exhibition of new work from her ‘Inscapes’ series at the Red Stables Gallery in Clontarf.  She describes ‘inscaping’ as a non-directive process: ‘the gradual application and manipulation of colour\, line\, form and scrap until an archetypal curve or hue\, recalled from sensory memory begins to resonate\, gradually making visibly familiar the connection between inner and outer worlds’. \n\nThe artist left Ireland in 1980 to complete her Fine Arts Degree before travelling extensively worldwide and nurturing an interest in myth and symbol\, as well as the use of art objects and images for healing purposes. She returned to Ireland in 1991 to work as a community artist on the Mural Squad and was often seen creatively tackling empty wall spaces around the inner city with a ladder\, brush and buckets of paint in the days before muralists carried spray cans. During this time she also worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for a variety of publications in Dublin.\n\nIn 2008 Rachael completed a Masters in Art Therapy at CAD\, Cork and is currently based in Derry working as a registered art therapist. She spends much of her free time painting in her late father’s studio in Fermanagh\, where she enjoys creating objects and images with found\, organic and scrap material\, and playing with the phenomenon of pareidolia – the human tendency to seek meaning in drifting and elusive imagery\, or ‘cloud reading’.\n\n‘Inscapes’ opens at the Red Stables Gallery\, Mount Prospect Ave\, Clontarf on April 30th and runs until May 6th The gallery is open 10 am – 5 pm daily and entry is free\n\nrachaeljohnsonartist.com
