DESCRIPTION:A chance to view Catherina Hearnes’ Japanese inspired ‘Arcadian Views’ and meet the artist. \nARTIST STATEMENT\n“This body of work continues my exploration of time\, place and memory\, the paintings are sited in the ‘designed’ landscape of the garden and visually reference abandoned buildings\, overgrown glasshouses\, follies\, grottos and shell houses. These are dreamy places\, places of escape connecting us backwards in time and inward to the self\, they exist as manifestations of our relationship with the natural world and as monuments to human aspiration\, memory and ultimately mortality. \nInfluenced in part by Wabi Sabi philosophy of ‘beauty in imperfection’ the paintings incorporate loose depictions of natural and manmade elements in asymmetrical and incomplete forms. The process relies on layering and erasure\, juxtaposition of the detailed and the obscure and a combination of painterly control and accident… \n…The imagery in these paintings acts as a compositional device and foil to painterly concerns\, balancing the image with the abstract and material possibilities of a painted surface. The motifs and structures used suggest things that have a ‘presence’ if no particular function\, their purpose seemingly less important than their striking form and placement in the landscape. \nVisits to gardens such as Villa Cimbrone on the Amalfi coast\, La Mortella in Ischia and the Ninfa Gardens south of Rome provided a stimulus for this body of work. The Ninfa Gardens in particular\, created by Gelasio Caetani in the 1920’s encapsulates many of the elements that interest me – sited amid the long-abandoned ruins of a medieval town\, this is a place where reality seem to soften at the edges\, the combination of location\, history\, colour\, texture and scent combine to provide an experience that is simultaneously emotive\, evocative and sensual. Described as a place “where time seems to stand still\,” I found them magical from the outset; possessing a sensibility that combined joyful celebration and intense pathos; it is this sensibility that I explore in my paintings.”

SUMMARY:Last Breath
DESCRIPTION:Gerry Balfe Smyth’s first solo exhibition\, last breath\, is a series of photographs documenting life in the south inner city flat complex St Teresa’s Gardens in Dublin’s liberties area.  The pictures\, inspired by and endeavouring to capture the spirit and resolve of the people in this once-massive public housing project\, built in the nineteen fifties and neglected for generations. \nIn the mid-eighties\, the south inner city heroin epidemic was at its height.  St Theresa’s Gardens flats complex was one of many deprived communities in Dublin that had been flooded with the drug.  Dealers were operating on a level that had not been seen before and neither police nor government was equipped to contain the situation.  Many young lives were wiped out through addiction and families torn apart\, with little or no support from the state. \nOver time\, the residents fought back and the Concerned Parents against Drugs group did a lot to reclaim their community.  Forced evictions of dealers and nightly patrols by the residents were the only way they could begin to address the problem. \nNow with regeneration in its final stages\, a small number of residents remain.  Most of the buildings have been demolished and the occupants moved to different locations around the city.  These people are now dealing with the reality of transitioning into new neighbourhoods and establishing a new identity and sense of belonging. \nThe images were taken over a seven-year period\, before regeneration had begun highlighting the struggle to stay alive\, to be clean\, to endure\, another reminder that social integration and inclusion must be accompanied by economic investment for it to have a chance.  The pictures are the last breath of a vibrant community before it is finally laid to rest. \nUntil May 13

SUMMARY:David Lunney—Chrome Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Chrome Dreams begins with a sculpture which is based around a sheet of ArtGlass (TM). This completely clear glass acts an invisible platform for a variety of reflective elements. This portable sculpture was brought to a forest in Ballyedmonduff (Dublin Mountains) where it was photographed in a variety of positions. Two of these photographs have been rendered as drawings. These strange and complex drawings are always the goal of this process; in a sense of reverse-engineering the imagery from the initial sculpture. \nDavid Lunney’s artistic practice involves the undertaking of protracted art processes. Typically\, these processes start with the construction of site-specific or portable sculptural works in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains. These sculptures are generally created less for their inherent value but rather to provide photographic source material for documentary artworks. The resulting documentary artworks can take the form of prints\, drawings or photographs. These images are rendered\, framed and presented in a fashion which intentionally obscures and embellishes the original object and moment that they represent. In these artworks\, it is often the relationship between representational imagery and its surrounding abstract visual information which infers the process and concept behind the work. The works have a self-contained narrative; the concept and the material process are intrinsically linked in the artworks discussion of its provenance. \nIn Chrome Dreams\, which shows new work from late 2017 and early 2018\, Lunney has expanded the complexity of the work\, both in process and execution. This can be seen most clearly in the Things Twice at Drumnabober series and in the new\, eponymous project. Chrome Dreams is an extension of the ongoing Things made for drawing project which uses handheld reflective sculptures\, photography\, drawing and other media to create process-driven artworks about the Dublin Mountains. In addition\, an important influence on this exhibition has been the artist’s work as a picture framer\, which has allowed him to tailor make unique manner of frames and devices. \nUntil April 14

DESCRIPTION:Grayson Perry has become a somewhat unlikely interrogator and investigator of class and masculinity leading to a series of publications and TV shows. The Vanity of Small Differences harks back his 2012 take on the Rake’s Progress through a series of six tapestries. “The tapestries tell the story of class mobility\, for I think nothing has as strong an influence on our aesthetic taste as the social class in which we grow up. I am interested in the politics of consumerism and the story of popular design but\, for this project\, I focus on the emotional investment we make in the things we choose to live with\, wear\, eat\, read or drive. Class and taste run deep in our character – we care. This emotional charge is what draws me to a subject\,” says Perry. SUMMARY:Surface
DESCRIPTION:Surface brings together a selection of works by artists Maureen Burke and Anne Marie Hayes. The title is suggestive of the diverse grounds and mediums that both artists utilise; the former being a range of intense\, intuitive layers of charcoal on paper\, the latter a combination of intriguing abstract concepts sometimes realised in glass – sometimes with a mixture of wax encaustic and found images. \nExhibition runs until March 18 \nMaureen Burke: \nThis recent work is inspired by repetitive journeys made in Knocklyon and Rathfarnham along with the environs of Dublin’s Ringsend while either walking or driving. Some works focus on the minutiae of urban hedgerow\, the tangled and complicated patterns created by snarled woodland in parts of Bushy Park\, the fragmented patches of light and the repetitive motives created by swathes of green suburban spaces. Other pieces explore the industrial\, emotionless aspects of power plants around the Pidgeon House area of Ringsend in Dublin. \nI am not concerned with the picturesque or sentimental aspects of these surroundings but rather their ability to call into focus the notion of looking and human perception – the notion that nothing exists outside the mind unless it is perceived – in this sense the subsequent act of drawing serves to clarify my thinking and experiences. \nDrawing is my way of making sense of my world –  a way of saying I was here and this is the evidence of how it made me feel…drawing\, in this sense\, is an arrangement of my experiences. \nWhile I am drawing I am concerned with the notion of mark-making and the structure of appearances more than what they represent in an objective sense. As John Berger puts it; to draw is to look\, examining the structure of appearances. A drawing of a tree shows\, not a tree\, but a tree-being-looked-at. In other words when we look at a tree its form registers instantaneously – however\, scrutinising the sight of this tree can take many hours ‘it also involves\, derives from\, and refers back to\, much previous experience of looking.’ \nAnne Marie Hayes\,  \nThe word encaustic originates from the Greek word enkaustikos which means to burn in and an element of heat is necessary for a painting to be called encaustic. The technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100–300 AD.I am attracted to this medium because of its dimensional quality and luminous colour. The layering of wax and paint\, appropriated images impacting on the Surface of the image\, layering on\, taking off\, re-working\, the struggle to find an image that works are all part of the delight of abstraction. \nSusan Sontag once described John Berger as peerless in his ability to make “attentiveness to the sensual world”.  The sensuality of surface is as important as the image in my work. \nReflecting on my working practice I realise that primarily this work results from a trajectory of practices that include an accumulation of ideas\, objects\, found images and documented experiences. Together they generate ideas for work and ultimately suggest the materials that need to be employed – thus\, whether I am painting\, drawing or working with a complex range of glass processes – the process is all important. This can be a process of keeping a balance on a risky path and calls to mind the following thoughts: \ntesting the capacity to face laws of nature\na desire to overcome the unpredictable  \nallow the interaction of ideas images and surface materials dominate the journey\nall is permitted  \na face from antiquity  \nan uncreative artist parting the waters \nhearing the sea on a rainless winter day\ncounting the tides of the sea \nimagine how much these trees have lived \ntaking a step forward and interrupting the journey  \nseeing how the surface protects  \nthe blocking and revelation of light

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day\, the first Mother Tongues Festival will take place on the 24th of February 2018 in Dublin. This language festival will feature performances and workshops in Irish\, Polish\, Arabic\, Mandarin\, Italian\, Spanish\, Romanian and more. \nDarina Gallagher and Sinead Murphy will be kicking off the festival at 5:30pm\, the duo is best known for their award-winning show ‘Songs of Joyce’\, a musical extravaganza drawn from the life and works of James Joyce. They have toured internationally to critical acclaim in Boston\, New York\, Budapest\, Prague\, San Sebastian and Moscow. Since 2010\, they have created a number of musical performances based on Joyce’s major works – Dubliners\, Ulysses\, Finnegans Wake and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Their new show\, Misses Liffey\, takes the audience on a riverrun journey through Dublin introducing us to many of Joyce’s engaging female characters that work\, sing\, laugh and live along her banks. \nFor the Mother Tongues festival\, Sinead and Darina will explore some of the musical linguistic magic that James Joyce developed throughout his life living in various countries in Europe. SUMMARY:Paul McKinley - Elysian Fields
DESCRIPTION:‘Elysian Fields’ refers to an afterlife in Greek mythology\, a place where the souls of gods and heroes as well as those associated with them would remain after death. Greece is a country dealing with mass displacement of people from war torn countries and though economically unstable\, their contribution to aiding those who have crossed the Aegean Sea merited a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016\, dedicated to all Greek Islanders. \nWithin this exhibition\, Paul McKinley considers modern conceptions of Greece as compared with its ancient history. His paintings feature aspects of Greek landscape; islands\, mountains and cliff edges\, often informed by compositions within art historical paintings. These landscapes are created from an amalgamation of various places and as such they are not one specific location\, but rather an essence of place. \nWithin Elysian Fields\, McKinley’s work charts the present-day representation of Greek landscape while the titles of the paintings subtly refer to parallels between heroes of ancient Greek mythology and the unwritten contemporary epic\, fashioned from the plight of individuals in exile. \nUntil March 10

DESCRIPTION:“Everything about him was fascinating\, from exploring gender\, identity\, humanity and morality throughout his work.”  \nDublin’s Bowie Festival — a mix of performances\, screenings and other celebrations of his work and legacy – kicked off in early January. \nThe 5th of the month witnessed the opening of the Sound + Vision exhibition in Image Now Gallery. \nThis group show will feature 25 specially created typographic posters\, one for every studio album released by the icon during his five-decade-long career.\n \nEach poster has been created by some of the best creatives in the industry\, from both Dublin and London. \nAll prints in the show are available to buy\, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society. \n \nThe exhibition is organised by Jennifer O’Brien\, a graduate of NCAD and designer at Image Now. \n \n“The response has been incredible. The whole show came together in a matter of weeks\, between writing a brief\, contacting printers\, and getting all the creatives involved. \nWe sent a call out just before the Christmas rush\, which was crazy\, but we really couldn’t believe how eager everyone was to get involved and contribute really considered and beautifully executed pieces. \n  \nIt’s an amazing thing to see people come together create original work that represents the retrospective of David Bowie’s legacy\, and to contribute to such a great cause.”  \n“It was my mum who first introduced me to his music\, so I had always had a connection to him through her. Mostly looking towards historical France focusing on Paris and Versailles.  In the early 1700’s Marie Antoinette’s more frivolous influence on fashion\, styling and the interior play an important role in my paintings. Although my paintings only allude to the interior space with the use of patterned fabric traditionally used in interior design the figure plays the main role. Often painted in costume to create a sense of cinematic drama and theatricality the subjects poses generally mimic those in traditional portraiture.
