SUMMARY:Niamh Barry: Light on Earth
DESCRIPTION:Barry creates unique light sculptures in bronze and LED. An NCAD graduate in 1991\, Barry’s work dates from lighting commissions for the Cellar Bar in the Merrion Hotel in 1997 right up to a recent one entitled Model of Vessel Scape which can be seen in the lobby of the Central Bank. Branching into ‘edge lit’ Barry blurs the lines between design\, luminism and sculptural lighting. There’s elegance\, beauty and intrigue to her work which will may make you reconsider our fixation on exposed bulbs being considered the height of now. \nhttps://youtu.be/563uxR9K2tg

SUMMARY:Wolfgang Tillmans - Rebuilding the Future
DESCRIPTION:Tillmans’ first ever solo exhibition in Ireland is truly a tentpole occasion for all the cool kids. This photographer/artist earned his stripes in the early 1990s chronicling Gen-X and rave culture. His images captured the sweaty truths of youth and freedom\, often out of the public gaze. Now having just turned 50\, Tillmans is truly established with shows in the likes of the Tate Modern and a major retrospective in MOMA in 2021. His varied portfolio includes working with Frank Ocean\, actively campaigning against Brexit\, designing for the English National Opera and AV collaborations with electronic producer Powell. In other words\, he can kind of do whatever he wants. This should prove to be a popular blockbuster.  \nCheck out this recent New Yorker profile. \nPhotograph of Tillmans by Collier Schorr for The New Yorker \nExhibition runs until March 10.

SUMMARY:Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again
DESCRIPTION:You are like a rich man entering heaven \nThrough the ear of a raindrop. Listen now again. \nSeamus Heaney: ‘The Rain Stick \nIt’s not how you picture a Nobel prize winner delivering his collection to a national institution. “In 2011\,” says Katherine McSharry\, Head of Outreach at National Library of Ireland and the Project Director of this exhibition\, the first to take place in the new Bank of Ireland Culture and Heritage Centre\, “Seamus Heaney packed up some boxes in his home in Sandymount – he wrote in the attic of the house – took them out to the car with his son Michael\, drove the car to the National Library\, and carried the boxes out of the car and up the stairs\, with the help of Library staff\, and that’s how they became part of the National Collection.”  \nEnds December 2021 \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Turner: The Vaughan Bequest
DESCRIPTION:That January light means one thing – the return of the annual Turner Exhibition at The National Gallery. \nIn the heart of winter\, the annual exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s luminous watercolours is a restorative ritual for many visitors\, and a newly discovered jewel for others. \nThe exhibition includes three Venetian views by Turner\, making it the perfect accompaniment to Canaletto and the Art of Venice\,  currently showing at the Gallery. \nWhy not get into your 2019 cultural stride by visiting both exhibitions to discover the differing approaches taken by the artists as they attempted to capture the essence of the city? \n1 – 31 January 2019 | Free admission

SUMMARY:Alice Maher - Vox Materia
DESCRIPTION:Having exhibited in The Source in Thurles and the Crawford in Cork\, Vox Materia makes it to the capital. Maher takes the mermaid myth as the point of exploration in her new work which incorporates silhouettes of photos of herself contorted into different positions along with hand-painted wood relief prints. There’s also a video installation and small sculptures displayed in a long glass cabinet. “I got really interested in what the female has had to do throughout history in order to belong to the human race\, or just to be an equal\,” she says. “It seemed to me that a lot of it was actually to give up her voice. And I’ve always been interested in the loss of voice.” \nUntil December 22

SUMMARY:Aoife Dunne's In Lacuna Launch at The Complex
DESCRIPTION:Few multi-sensory spaces can compete with the realms Dunne dreams up\, making In Lacuna’s launch this Thursday 29th an unmissable night (and with that\, a multi-hued antidote to dark winter nights). It’s a short and sweet burst of a show\, wrapping on Monday 3rd\, but those left craving more of Dunne’s creations will relish her jam-packed calendar next year. \n \nIn Lacuna is running in the Complex Gallery\, 15 Little Green Street\, Dublin 7 from 29th November (opening 7pm) to 3rd December \naoifedunne.com — @efadone \nCheck out our interview with Aoife here

SUMMARY:Prix Pictet - Space
DESCRIPTION:Another Irish winner comes in the guise of photographer Richard Mosse who won the seventh cycle of this exhibition aimed at drawing global attention to issues of sustainability. Mosse’s Heat Maps series were made using a military camera that is classified as a weapon under international law. The hi-tech surveillance device\, designed to detect body heat from a distance of over 30km\, was used by Mosse to track the journeys of refugees from the Middle East and north Africa. It renders an sci-fi quality to this most human of concerns. Until Jan 5

SUMMARY:BP Fallon - The Camera & I
DESCRIPTION:As legends go\, the Beep is up there with them. Yes\, he was on Top of the Pops with John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band in 1970 miming playing the tambourine on Instant Karma. Yes\, he was a publicist with Thin Lizzy and T Rex and toured with Led Zeppelin. Yes\, he’s recorded with Jack White and ran Death Disco with Alan McGee. This level of old school rock ’n’ roll also granted him access others can only dream of. “It just seems the right time” says BP about doing his first-ever photography exhibition. “I always carry a camera\,” says BP. “The shots\, they’re moments. I look at the photo of Willie Nelson at his 80th Birthday and each line etched on his face signifies a thousand lifetimes.” He’s also a fantastic name-dropper but\, unlike others\, the grains of truth far outweigh the sediment of lies. \nRuns until October 18

SUMMARY:Roderic O'Conor and The Moderns
DESCRIPTION:Described by The Irish Times as “Ireland’s great forgotten painter”\, this retrospective showcases O’Conor’s signature expressionist style\, full of bold colours. Many of the pieces have not been displayed until now\, perhaps due to his distrust of art dealers. O’Conor was popular amongst the avant garde scene\, and surrealist André Breton was known to have bought some of his art. O’Conor’s work is on display alongside other well-known artists that were both his friends and collaborators such as Paul Gauguin\, Vincent van Gogh\, Armand Seguin\, Robert Befan and Cuno Amiet.

SUMMARY:my comfort and my joy: Songs from the Irish Other
DESCRIPTION:At the opening of this exhibition\, Irish traveller and singer Thomas McCarthy sang the very song from which this exhibition is titled. The words ‘my comfort and my joy’ were preceded by ‘where will you be buried’ but as Belfast-based artist\, and musician\, Seamus Harahan notes: “I filmed Thomas in the context of our shared comfort and joy in the song and music.” By documenting McCarthy and his heritage in this original commission\, Harahan seeks “to look at an old weave of Irishness that hasn’t fitted with modern\, plastic\, Irish state ideals.” \nuntil November 17

SUMMARY:The Lost Moment
DESCRIPTION:On November 30\, 1968\, as a young lad\, Sean O’Hagan attended a civil rights march in his home town of Armagh. It’s worth bearing in mind that to be eligible to vote in a local election back then you had to be a homeowner\, most of whom were middle and upper class Protestants. Couple this with gerrymandering and blatant housing and work discrimination against Catholics\, and you had the simmering stew of discontent which gave way to The Troubles. \n Of course\, ’68 proved a watershed year globally\, with uprisings and tumult across the world from the Prague Spring to the assassination of Martin Luther King in the US. The Lost Moment revisits this seminal year through the eyes of the photographers who were there to witness and testify a change was on its way. Projections\, video installations\, contemporary political posters and a wealth of other ephemera from the time also form part of The Lost Moment. \n

SUMMARY:Borderline
DESCRIPTION:Internationally exhibited Artist Elaine Byrne works with photography\, sculpture\, and video to convey her powerful messages. Her art has garnered attention and awards\, and her piece Hellgoer has recently been added to the  permanent collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her new solo show examines what motivates nations to separate themselves through the erection of walls. The US president famously called for a wall to built between his country and Mexico; what kind of transformation will its completion bring about? What are nations trying to protect or contain when they seek such drastic measures? Using sculpture and photography\, Byrne examines the themes of globalization\, economics\, nation sovereignty\, and the anxiety that drives nations to desire a physical separation from what surrounds them.

SUMMARY:Beano
DESCRIPTION:The Beano is an institution. Celebrating 80 years in existence\, Dennis the Menace\, Gnasher and the Bash Street Kids form a stable of characters who have become intergenerational household names. It still sells almost 2m copies annually\, all from its base in Dundee. \nTo mark this milestone\, Pop Artist Horace Panter has transported the notorious gang of iconic British comic characters into the worlds of Warhol\, Lichtenstein and Hockney in a new collection of paintings and silkscreen prints.

SUMMARY:Chaos and Order (James Devlin)
DESCRIPTION:This self-taught painter and illustrator likens his work to “a band that sound like they could fall apart at any minute but then sync up and transcend into something beautiful.” There’s clear nods to Keith Haring in an image such as Black Magic Shadows and an interplay of playfulness and provocation across his work. \nIG: @devlinnewworks

SUMMARY:Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian: Sunset\, Sunrise
DESCRIPTION:It is telling of the esteem in which the nonagenarian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian is held in her native Iran that it opened its first museum dedicated to a solo female in her honour last December. Having been effectively exiled during the Iranian revolution\, the nonagenarian became a friend of Andy Warhol\, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning\, yet only received her first US solo museum exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York in 2015. Her work is based on geometry and the design which emanates from these principles in different materials.

SUMMARY:Seamus Nolan: Traveller Collection
DESCRIPTION:Nolan’s project seeks to open a dialogue about what an appropriate approach to integrating the narrative of Traveller History into the ‘National Project’ might look like. Building a resource of exhibits and items which reflect this culture\, Nolan seeks a better appreciation of how the traveller community integrates and stands apart from the ‘settled’ community and in turn makes us appreciate their values\, traditions and customs. It has been commissioned by the gallery in association with Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre.

SUMMARY:Tremble Tremble
DESCRIPTION:Tremble Tremble\, the work of Jesse Jones\, creates a discourse around feminism and the role of women. Jones’ work stems from a rising social movement in Ireland which calls for a change to the outdated relationship between church and state. Jones began by researching how laws and their resulting mindsets can be passed down through generations. This work is particularly of relevance today in this new post-8th-amendment Ireland. In conjunction with this event Project Arts Centre will run a series of artist talks with Jesse Jones\, details of which can be found on their website. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Raw Portraits
DESCRIPTION:We all experience injuries through age\, illness and our working lives: emotional and physical; through our spirit and skin. This exploration becomes particularly poignant for the professional dancer. At what point do we expose these injuries as part of our being? Give in to them? Embrace them?  \nThis work is a continuation of Between Spirit and Skin (2016). It was originally created in response to Ailish Claffey’s experience as dancer in residence through the National Centre for Arts and Health\, and expanded in collaboration with Cathy Coughlan\, through digital media with this series of intimate film studies that celebrate instability and uncertainty. \nOpening reception – July 5 (6.30pm) \nRuns until July 7

SUMMARY:Life at the Edges
DESCRIPTION:From a zine depicting the tale of an unmanned rover sent to Mars\, to exhibits explaining force load variation and hair accessories to combat zero-gravity\, art\, science\, and culture are all respectfully represented and given equal attention in Life at The Edges. It demonstrates how beings cling to life in the most unlikely of places – animals and plants alike – through depictions of the harsh conditions humans brave to explore space and plants attempting to grow in hostile environments. One stand-out piece is by an artist called Skye Morét titled ‘Antarctica: A Chromatic Paradise’\, which highlights the vibrancy and life that exists underneath the sea. Life at The Edges is a delightful balance of information and inspiration\, and a reminder of life’s stubborn persistence across the universe.
