SUMMARY:Time and Space - John Fitzsimons
DESCRIPTION:Time and Space is an exhibition of new paintings by John Fitzsimons. The works in this exhibition use the infinite possibilities of colour\, line and shape to explore the endlessness and expansiveness of time.\n\nAt the heart of this exhibition\, Fitzsimons presents a new series of paintings formed using quadrilateral motifs. Each painting presents four\, four-sided shapes side by side\, each softly modified through form and colour – the tilt of a line from left to right\, the deepening of a hue. These works are generated within a series of set rules devised by the artist – the ends of each quadrilateral can be either perpendicular or slope left or right – but even when working within this fixed set of parameters\, the number of possible paintings this format could generate grows exponentially when adding variable factors such as colour. Those manifested thus represent only a select few of the possibilities – just as we are inhabiting just a minute section of the infinite cosmic sprawl of time\, and perhaps occupy just one of many possible parallel universes.\n\nAcross other works in the exhibition\, Fitzsimons deepens this exploration into the cosmic realm\, further fragmenting his angular geometric forms to create layered\, optically complex paintings. Rectangles and rhomboids softly glimmer in and out of focus in an array of muted hues in one work\, evoking the flickering of a light. Other paintings feel more radical\, more charged\, in their depiction of spacetime: light speed is rendered as linear shapes zooming upwards\, while wiry trapezoid forms seem to radiate outwards from their angular source in another painting\, crystallising the notion of multiple universes operating in tandem.\n\n\nDevised in electric colour palettes\, the works vary from rhythmic and modular\, to pulsating with a newfound sense of dynamism. The paint itself is applied in thin layers\, minimising the artist’s hand\, and creating a smoother\, more hard-edged spirit. That said\, a newfound depth has been created in some of the works\, which use glazing techniques to achieve a rich\, velvety texture. The dynamic potential of the paintings is further heightened by the application of paint to the sides of the canvases\, adding a three-dimensionality and sculptural quality to the works.” – Rosa Abbott

DESCRIPTION:It is worth remembering that while we navigate Level 3 for the moment\, and possibly the foreseeable\, that not everything is closed or online. Commercial galleries remain open and SO Fine Art in the Powerscourt Centre is one of the exemplary examples of an accessible space in terms of welcome and entry price point. It’s played host to artists we have had a keen on eye for some while such as Shane O’Driscoll\, Joby Hickey and Mary O’Connor. And Neil Dunne whose Outlier exhibition sees him present a new body of work. \n \nDunne’s practice is concerned with the methodologies and aesthetic of our urban spaces\, abstracting and referencing the continual visual additions interjected into the landscape. The work presented in Outlier is layered\, complex and fluid\, an evolving take on the pulse which permeates urban existence. \nEnds October 24

SUMMARY:Samuel Laurence Cunnane
DESCRIPTION:The Irish/ French artist Samuel Laurence Cunnane’s new work deals in large part with the idea of the outskirt\, what Brian Dillon refers to as “messy peripheries\, the obscure edges of distinct places\, sidelong glances instead of vivid or picturesque vistas”. \n \nThe work for the most part has been made in the west of Ireland where Cunnane has used the backdrop of pebbledash\, incessant damp\, exotic invasive species and an ominous tone of an environmental threat to depict a world where the empty spaces on the fringes are overlooked\, abandoned and increasingly contested. This idea of the outskirt is not just meant in the physical sense\, such as the outskirt of a town or city\, the outskirt of an economic or administrative zone but also the outskirt of our vision and consciousness. Cunnane’s photographs deal with what is on the periphery of our vision\, the blind spot towards our surroundings and disconnect with the environment\, and the existential unease that arises from such a blind spot. \n \nMany of the works use cinematic techniques\, be it framing\, lighting or even particular ratios as a way of exploring this idea of the ‘landscape’ as pre-existing imagery in our minds inherited and projected upon the exterior world. Cunnane’s work uses analogue photographic techniques\, printed by the artist. Cunnane remains highly connected to the physicality of the production process; in no small part influenced by the increasingly dematerialised nature of contemporary image making and dissemination. \nRuns until October 10

DESCRIPTION:Born in 1966\, Internationally renowned abstract painter Ian Davenport studied at Goldsmiths College alongside notable peers such as Damien Hirst\, Michael Landy\, Gary Hume\, and Sarah Lucas. He graduated in 1988\, and that same year was included in Hirst’s seminal Freeze exhibition—the first gathering of the loose group that would become known as the Young British Artists. \nIan Davenport\, Summer\, 115x113cm\, print edition of 30\, €9\,350. Works by Davenport and Monaghan will be exhibited together in Gormleys Fine Art\, 27 Frederick St South\, Dublin\, from September 10 to September 30.\nMuch of Davenport’s work is made by pouring or dripping paint down an angled surface\, as in the ‘Days Like These’ exhibition at Tate Britain in 2003\, where Davenport created a mural by dripping lines of coloured paint vertically down a wall using a syringe. Other work features paint poured on a flat surface\, relying on the effects of gravity and weight to move colour into abstract compositions. In 1991\, Davenport was nominated for the Turner Prize & in 2002 his work was exhibited in Irish Museum of Modern Art. \nAward-winning artist Peter Monaghan was born in Ireland in 1955 and studied at the National College of Art and Design in the mid-1970s. “My work is the result of disciplined research into the experience of looking – the experience of pure visual sensation and aesthetic pleasure. Simple forms and colours are used in repetition to engage the viewer. It is a dialogue about light\, colour\, movement and illusion; exploring the relationships and contrasts between painted flat surfaces\, protruding spheres\, cubes or geometric shapes. The work aims to evoke a response from the viewer.” \nPeter Monaghan\, Timecoloured\, 80x110cm\, mixed media\, €7\,000. Works by Monaghan and Davenport will be exhibited together in Gormleys Fine Art\, 27 Frederick St South\, Dublin\, from September 10 to September 30.\nMonaghan’s artwork has won national & international recognition including winning the Jim McNaughton Bursary for Commissioned Artists as part of the Business to Arts Awards. His large-scale installations can be seen in prestigious locations such as the V.I.P. Presidential Suite in Dublin Airport\, the Gibson Hotel\, the Dean Hotel\, the Beacon Clinic and UCD’s scientific centre. Monaghan has also exhibited at the RHA in Dublin and had successful exhibitions in London\, New York\, Miami\, Singapore\, Brussels and Hong Kong. \nBoth artists share a keen interest in the combination of colour and line to create vibrant and dynamic pieces. SUMMARY:Bharti Kher - A Consummate Joy
DESCRIPTION:Bharti Kher’s oeuvre spans more than two decades and includes paintings\, sculptures and installations. Throughout her practice she has displayed an unwavering relationship with surrealism\, narrative\, and the nature of things. Inspired by a wide range of sources and making practices\, she employs the readymade in wide arc of meaning and transformation. Kher’s works thus appear to move through time\, using reference as a counterpoint and contradiction as a visual tool. Her chimeras\, mythical monsters\, and allegorical tales combine references that are at once topical and traditional\, political and poetic. \nA Consummate Joy comprises new and recent works\, ranging from sculpture\, painting\, installation and watercolours\, and the latest annual edition of a 30-year project which began in 2010\, Virus XI (2020). Now living in New Delhi\, India\, Kher’s use of found objects is informed by her own position as an artist located between geographic and social surroundings. Kher’s way of working is exploratory; surveying\, looking\, collecting and transforming\, as she repositions the viewer’s relationship with the object and initiates a dialogue between metaphysical and material pursuits. \nBharti Kher on the significance of showing her work in Ireland said “Ireland has always been an interest for me in its similarities to ancient Indian history and mythologies; from the worship of pagan goddesses to the practice of oral storytelling and song”.  \nAt the centre of Kher’s practice are her sculptures\, early examples of which featured fantastical hybrid characters\, blurring the distinctions between humans and nature\, ecology and politics. In line with this early practice\, Kher continues to assemble\, juxtapose and transform found objects that are witness to their own histories. \nuntil January 17\, 2021 \n

DESCRIPTION:A lot of the time they go unnoticed: old sheds\, old walls\, a wet ditch after the summer rain.” – Artist Eugene Conway\n \n“New Landscapes\,” an exhibition of recent works from one of Ireland’s leading realist landscape painters Eugene Conway\, goes on display at Gormleys Fine Art in Dublin from July 4 to 18. \nOriginally from Dublin\, Eugene Conway moved to Kilkenny as a child in the 1960s. Growing up in the countryside\, he developed a great love and appreciation for the beauty of nature and his paintings see the landscape of County Kilkenny brought centre stage. \nConway’s paintings suggest the unfolding of ordinary rural life\, reflecting the layers of history left by habitation and farming. \nEugene Conway\, Stream in Spring\, Oil on Linen\nHis work mostly focuses on farm scenes — old barns nestled amongst the hedgerows beside moss-covered stone walls; while his use of colour relates directly to the weather\, the seasons and the passage of time. His subjects – bridges\, barns and byways – are the unsung heroes of the Irish countryside\, the aspects of the landscape that you notice when you live there. \nThe painter’s work is meticulously observed – the pattern of leaves blown into the side of the road\, the way that clouds are reflected in puddles\, an old gate\, propped beneath a bridge. One image sees the russet ridges of a corrugated barn highlighted against the green of fertilised fields in the moment before rain. In another a farm track\, scored with tractor tyres\, is almost impassable with mud. \nSpeaking about his subject matter\, Conway observes\, “A lot of the time they go unnoticed: old sheds\, old walls\, a wet ditch after the summer rain\, or maybe the way that the light is hitting something\, bringing out a lovely pattern in it.” He adds\, “The light is at a certain point. If you come back an hour later\, everything has changed.” \nEugene Conway\, Green Barn in Snow\, Oil on Linen.\nEugene Conway studied at the National College of Art & Design\, NCAD\, Dublin. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: The Diceman
DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of his passing this spring comes an appreciation of The Diceman. Thom McGinty was a much beloved Grafton Street character\, intrinsic to the culture of the city and fondly remember by all those who encountered his mime antics during the ‘80s and ‘90s. He brought the street to a halt as onlookers crowded around for a gawk as he stood there impervious to their attention or undertook his ‘Zen walk’. And\, then\, with a wink or a flinch he tumbled their tension into mirth and awe.  \nThe late Gay Byrne conducted a sympathetic interview\, with McGinty on The Late Late Show in 1988\, in which he dispelled many of the myths and ignorance which existed at the time about the AIDS virus of which he suffered. He died age 42. This is the most fitting of tributes to one of the city’s most cherished.

DESCRIPTION:As light passes through defective glass\, beams split into colour spectra\, causing “diffraction grating.” This visual phenomenon is captured in a series of beautiful chromatic abstractions by the Irish\, NYC-based\, visual artist and director Shane Griffin. It’s easy to see why he has also licensed his artwork to Apple for their iPhone backgrounds. Besides this\, Griffin has directed title sequences for Unbanned: The Legend Of AJ1 (Air Jordan’s if your street cred is flagging)\, worked for Nike on creating ‘environment and textual elements’ in support of Kanye West’s Yeezy II (The Red Octobers) as well as creating typography for Travis Scott’s ‘Rap Calendar’. He was also made global creative director of Los York Studios in 2018. SUMMARY:Linda Brownlee - Idle Typography
DESCRIPTION:Taking her transitions between North Dublin’s suburbs and inner city as the subject matter for this ongoing body of work\, Brownlee highlights the aesthetic promise in the everyday.  Her work delicately explores the intricate energy of the people and places onto which she stumbles. Gently unravelling visual spaces into select abstracted images\, she attempts to organise and disorganise her surroundings. \nThe primary impulse behind this series of wanderings was a desire to confront\, connect\, orientate and occupy. Engaging in close studies\, she moves and follows the aesthetic contours of her surroundings\, reluctant to glamorise her subjects. With a tireless antenna for ambience\, her images amplify the minutiae of found textures and patterns.  \nTopography in this case refers to the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area.  Curious to how environments inhabit its locals\, her lens studies how people and places are intricately puzzled together. Public spaces often embed underlying barriers; she pushes against the unseen discrimination of circulation through a uniquely female lens. Brownlee collaborated with designer Claire Huss on a concertina which will accompany this exhibition. \nLinda Brownlee’s portrait\, fashion and documentary work has appeared in galleries such as London’s National Portrait Gallery\, Tate Liverpool\, Open Eye Gallery\, the Yinka Shonibare Gallery\, and the Gallery of Photography in Dublin. Her work has appeared regularly in publications such as Dazed & Confused\, British Vogue\, The New York Times\, The Guardian and Telegraph magazines. Linda self-published her first photo book Achill in 2010\, designed by Wayne Daly.  Her project Hydrangea Etc was published by design group AAD in 2014. DESCRIPTION:Capitalist Realism is a term coined by the late theorist Mark Fisher\, as well as the title of his book on the subject\, Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?\, focusing on the bleak thought of “the widespread sense that not only is capitalism the only viable political and economic system\, but also that it is now impossible even to imagine a coherent alternative to it”. DESCRIPTION:A two-hander exhibition by Shane O’Driscoll and Joby Hickey. O’Driscoll is a Cork-based printmaker and visual artist whose silkscreen prints are ubiquitous of late\, forming part of the OPW and National Gallery collection. Employing vibrant colour blocks with curvilinear shapes balanced by white space\, O’Driscoll’s balances contemporary resonances with nostalgic nods across his work. Hickey’s analogue photographic techniques bring a sense of found footage to his work. He utilises a photographic glass plate process\, which requires the photographic material to be coated\, sensitized using silver salts\, exposed and developed within a 15-minute time span. Erratic is the culmination of work inspired by Dillon’s last two years of living in County Sligo. Utilising an outsider’s eyes to capture the wildness of the land through an urban perspective\, flocks of sheep\, hay bales and their rudimentary markings are source material for his explorations. Drawn to the inconspicuous artistry of the rural\, Dillon breathes fresh inventiveness into this body of work. Coinciding with the show will be a pop-up supper club. DESCRIPTION:It’s the 189th annual RHA exhibition\, yes the 189th and the first to take place under the aegis of a female academy president – the artist Abigail O’Brien.  \nThe premise is artists can submit up to three works at a cost of €30 each. A selection is made from the 2700 works they received and if your work makes the final 10% or so and is sold\, the RHA will take 35% commission and you will pocket the rest. As an exhibition\, it enables everyone to decide what they may like or dislike with a broad sweep of the current canvas of the Irish art world.  \nDoes the world need another painted Coca-Cola bottle even by a distinguished artist such as Neil Shawcross? Hmm!  \nSome stand-outs for us include: Jack Hickey’s ‘Age of Innocence’\, Vera Klute’s bust of Eileen Gray\, Gabhann Dunne’s ‘Pink Hare’\, Lars Nyberg’s ‘Winter Road’\, James Hanley’s ‘David and Goliath’\, Charles Harper’s ‘Maidens’\, Maria Simonds-Goodings ‘Salt Fields’\, Ishmael Clayton’s ‘Fuzzy Future’\, Katherine Sankey’s ‘Protist’\, Jeanette Lowe’s ‘Skip Sculpture’\, Eddie Kennedy’s ‘Bathers’ and John Rainey’s ‘Flay 1’  \nRHA until August 10

DESCRIPTION:Ángel Luis González has been at the helm of nuturing\, developing and supporting the photographic community for a decade now and realises another milestone achievement with a proper exhibition space to showcase a thrilling series of exhibitions throughout the month. It opens with the word of French-Lebaese photographer and filmmaker Nadim Asfar (main photo); turns the spotlights on New Irish Works by ten of the best\, including those who have featured on our pages\, such as Dorje DeBurgh\, Roisin White\, George Voronov and Phelim Hoey. SUMMARY:Exhibition - To The Moon
DESCRIPTION:On July 20\, 1969\, the lads from Apollo 11 landed on the Moon making “one small step…” Now we all know about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin but spare a thought for Michael Collins. While the boyos were bouncing about planting the flag\, poor old Collins only got to fly to the moon and stay in orbit. The Evening Press declared Monday July 21 to be ‘Moonday’ on their masthead and Bishop Fulton Sheen delivered a prayer in the Carmelite Church on Whitefriar Street which was carried on the front page. \nYou can see some of the news clippings including a ‘here’s one we made in anticipation’ RTE Guide in the National Print Museum’s acknowledgement of how the moon landing impacted upon us and was received. It is accompanied by an exhibition of second year NCAD illustration students whereby they interpret the theme of the moon into their letterpress prints.  \nNational Print Museum until July 21 (at least)
