SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Pete Smyth - Local
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective exhibition features work from Pete Smyth’s extensive photography project documenting aspects of life in West Tallaght where he lives. Local brings together Smyth’s renowned portrait series ‘Traveller’ and ‘View from the Dearth’\, alongside his most recent work charting street and nightlife in and around Tallaght\, “the routines\, dramas and celebrations\, the lending and returning…” as Ken Grant says in the foreword to this collection. Informed by his role as a community arts worker and social activist\, Smyth lays bare “a place he helps shape and one that’s probably shaped him in the process.” \nGallery of Photography until January 12 \nPhoto: Street Pony Riders by Pete Smyth

SUMMARY:Turner The Visionary at The National Gallery of Ireland
DESCRIPTION:That January light means one thing – the return of the annual Turner Exhibition at The National Gallery. \nIn the heart of winter\, the annual exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s luminous watercolours is a restorative ritual for many visitors\, and a newly discovered jewel for others. \nThis year’s display of watercolours by J.M.W. Turner will be complemented by a fascinating collection of works by over twenty artists inspired by him.  With many of these watercolours having not been seen in years\, this is a great opportunity to feast your eyes on work from artists such as William Leech\, Evie Hone\, Paul Cézanne and John Singer Sargent. \n \nAll works in this year’s display are from the Gallery’s collection\, and visitors can also enjoy recent acquisitions by artists Basil Blackshaw and Kyffin Williams. \nThis year’s exhibition is sponsored by Sarasin & Partners. \n1 – 31 January 2019 | Free admission \nImages (c) The National Gallery of Ireland

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Niall Sweeney - I am the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Kickstarter in the can with 594 backers pledging €47\,634 towards their new space in Blackpitts. And the flag is foisted over their new home on this opening weekender\, with requisite splendour\, by Niall Sweeney. I am the Cosmos in their new gallery explores dark matter\, space deities and the electromagnetic push-and-pull of the forces that bind us. Featuring a series of eight prints and two silk scarves\, Sweeney says “Silk scarves are sensual\, beautiful things\, but even in conservative circles they can be the one canvas where anything goes\, where play and subversion can roam – they are very egalitarian in this respect. The prints have been inspired by the designs for the scarves\, depicting each of the deities in their natural habitat – the dark – but they also explore the event horizons of desire. There’s more than a hint of Egyptian gods and Japanese Shinto\, of animism and the inherent spirit in all objects\, and\, of course\, the cosmological universal field!”. \nHen’s Teeth\, The Tannery\, Blackpitts; Thursday November 7 until Wednesday December 11. \nPhoto: Dark Matter by Niall Sweeney [silk scarf]

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Alice Fitzgerald - Form Shape Form
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by organic shapes and natural forms alongside the geometric structures\, visual artist and designer Alice Fitzgerald presents Form Shapes Form\, a series of six dramatic mono-colour prints that use scale and closeness to replace the order of space in an elegant\, playful and direct way. “Through these idiosyncratic\, elemental forms\, I’m looking to strike a certain kind of balance between order and chaos\, with every element part of the whole. For this series\, I gave myself two rules: one colour only\, and all elements must be touching another\, the order of scale and closeness have replaced the order of space in my earlier work.” Each print will have a limited edition run of 20. \n Damn Fine Print\, North Brunswick Street\, D7\, until Friday November 15 \nPhoto: Forms By Alice Fitzgerald

SUMMARY:Linda Brownlee - Idle Typography
DESCRIPTION:Taking her transitions between North Dublin’s suburbs and inner city as the subject matter for this ongoing body of work\, Brownlee highlights the aesthetic promise in the everyday.  Her work delicately explores the intricate energy of the people and places onto which she stumbles. Gently unravelling visual spaces into select abstracted images\, she attempts to organise and disorganise her surroundings. \nThe primary impulse behind this series of wanderings was a desire to confront\, connect\, orientate and occupy. Engaging in close studies\, she moves and follows the aesthetic contours of her surroundings\, reluctant to glamorise her subjects. With a tireless antenna for ambience\, her images amplify the minutiae of found textures and patterns.  \nTopography in this case refers to the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area.  Curious to how environments inhabit its locals\, her lens studies how people and places are intricately puzzled together. Public spaces often embed underlying barriers; she pushes against the unseen discrimination of circulation through a uniquely female lens. Brownlee collaborated with designer Claire Huss on a concertina which will accompany this exhibition. \nLinda Brownlee’s portrait\, fashion and documentary work has appeared in galleries such as London’s National Portrait Gallery\, Tate Liverpool\, Open Eye Gallery\, the Yinka Shonibare Gallery\, and the Gallery of Photography in Dublin. Her work has appeared regularly in publications such as Dazed & Confused\, British Vogue\, The New York Times\, The Guardian and Telegraph magazines. Linda self-published her first photo book Achill in 2010\, designed by Wayne Daly.  Her project Hydrangea Etc was published by design group AAD in 2014. Most recently\, she collaborated with Aisling Farinella and Workgroup publishing I Zii\, an intimate series which follows the landscape and lives of Farinella’s Sicilian family. \nRuns until end of month. \n \nArtist Talk with special guest on Friday September 20th 6.30pm \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mandy O’Neill - Quiet at the Back
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on themes of youth\, adolescence\, community\, environment and institutions\, Mandy O’Neill has been engaging in the dynamics of school life for over a decade. Prompted by an interest in the transitional states of childhood and adolescence\, over time\, complex questions have surfaced about how important and powerful ideas about having aspirations and access to opportunities can affect children and young people’s expectations. Quiet at the Back draws together previous work Aspiration [2005-2007] Promise [2012-2015]\, Champions Avenue [2017-2019] along with her latest output The Whole Room Went White [2019]. \nUntil Sunday October 27

SUMMARY:Our Celestial Sphere
DESCRIPTION:Capitalist Realism is a term coined by the late theorist Mark Fisher\, as well as the title of his book on the subject\, Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?\, focusing on the bleak thought of “the widespread sense that not only is capitalism the only viable political and economic system\, but also that it is now impossible even to imagine a coherent alternative to it”. Kerry Guinan’s exhibition at Pallas Projects\, Our Celestial Sphere\, uses the developed methodology of relational socialist realism to try and work a way past that point\, engaging workers and ideas\, critiquing modern capitalism and trying to find a strategy for the future.  It’s on display until Sep 28\, with a panel discussion with Guinan\, artist Ann Ryan and Dr. Kieran Cashell on September 26 at 6pm. \nPhoto:Image: Artists\, detail\, 3 blank 70x70cm canvases signed by the factory workers that made them\nin Daler-Rowney\, Free Industrial Zone\, the Dominican Republic

SUMMARY:Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Some of us strive for it\, some of us even attain it\, but perfection is often a fleeting\, illusive and damaging ideal. Emerging from its sister gallery off-shoot in Melbourne\, Perfection investigates the concept through a typically eclectic variety of informative strands covering philosophy\, ethnicity\, genetics\, cognitive science\, artificial intelligence and consumer psychology. \nThere’s Graham (Patricia Piccinini)\, a neckless creation to show what we would look like if we were to withstand a low speed crash. Meet Orlan\, the French artist known for the radical act of changing her appearance with plastic surgery in the name of art. \nSimilar to the self-portraits of Cindy Sherman\, Orlan uses her face and body as malleable tools for shifting identities. Symbiotic Ones (Jane Sverdrupsen) explores the notion that many couples look similar to one while Morphoteque #15 (Driessens and Verstappen) reflects the human urge for standardisation within food.  \nUntil Sunday October 6

SUMMARY:Full Turn - Shane O'Driscoll & Joby Hickey
DESCRIPTION:A two-hander exhibition by Shane O’Driscoll and Joby Hickey. O’Driscoll is a Cork-based printmaker and visual artist whose silkscreen prints are ubiquitous of late\, forming part of the OPW and National Gallery collection. Employing vibrant colour blocks with curvilinear shapes balanced by white space\, O’Driscoll’s balances contemporary resonances with nostalgic nods across his work. Hickey’s analogue photographic techniques bring a sense of found footage to his work. He utilises a photographic glass plate process\, which requires the photographic material to be coated\, sensitized using silver salts\, exposed and developed within a 15-minute time span. Images of moons\, astronauts and skies form the backbone of his work for Full Turn. \nuntil Thursday October 3

SUMMARY:Valérie Blass: The Mime\, the Model and the Dupe
DESCRIPTION:The Mime\, the Model and the Dupe is the debut exhibition by this Montreal based artist. “The very essence of a sculpture is that it has to stand on its own\,” says Blass. “You can have an idea but it has to have a base. It has to be raised\, have a way of standing.” This selection of works engage with images\, gestures and forms related to the body. There’s surprise and distortion at every twist and turn. These stand up and stack up.

SUMMARY:Ronan Dillon - Erratic
DESCRIPTION:Hang Tough continues its run of excellent exhibitions in their fantastic space with a debut solo exhibition by Ronan Dillon. Erratic is the culmination of work inspired by Dillon’s last two years of living in County Sligo. Utilising an outsider’s eyes to capture the wildness of the land through an urban perspective\, flocks of sheep\, hay bales and their rudimentary markings are source material for his explorations. Drawn to the inconspicuous artistry of the rural\, Dillon breathes fresh inventiveness into this body of work. Coinciding with the show will be a pop-up supper club. Roots x Hang Tough comes courtesy of Keith Coleman & Aisling McHugh who are creating a five course ‘West of Ireland’ inspired tasting menu (€75) over three consecutive nights on August 21\, 22 and 23. Wild and wonderful.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Sorolla
DESCRIPTION:Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was known as the ‘master of light’ but the Spanish Impressionist is a largely forgotten figure in the art world compared to heavyweights such as Monet\, Van Gogh and Renoir. \nFrom beaches\, gardens and landscapes to social themes and family portraits\, there’s sun-drenched scenes and depictions of Spanish life in this\, the first exhibition of his work here. \nConsider this the artistic equivalent of getting a visual dose of Vitamin D\, some balm for the soul. \nNational Gallery until Sunday November 3 \nPhoto: Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923)\, Sewing the Sail\, 1896. 2019 © Photo Archive – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia

SUMMARY:189th RHA Annual Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 189th annual RHA exhibition\, yes the 189th and the first to take place under the aegis of a female academy president – the artist Abigail O’Brien. \nThe premise is artists can submit up to three works at a cost of €30 each. A selection is made from the 2700 works they received and if your work makes the final 10% or so and is sold\, the RHA will take 35% commission and you will pocket the rest. As an exhibition\, it enables everyone to decide what they may like or dislike with a broad sweep of the current canvas of the Irish art world. \nDoes the world need another painted Coca-Cola bottle even by a distinguished artist such as Neil Shawcross? Hmm! \nSome stand-outs for us include: Jack Hickey’s ‘Age of Innocence’\, Vera Klute’s bust of Eileen Gray\, Gabhann Dunne’s ‘Pink Hare’\, Lars Nyberg’s ‘Winter Road’\, James Hanley’s ‘David and Goliath’\, Charles Harper’s ‘Maidens’\, Maria Simonds-Goodings ‘Salt Fields’\, Ishmael Clayton’s ‘Fuzzy Future’\, Katherine Sankey’s ‘Protist’\, Jeanette Lowe’s ‘Skip Sculpture’\, Eddie Kennedy’s ‘Bathers’ and John Rainey’s ‘Flay 1’  \nRHA until August 10

SUMMARY:Exhibition - To The Moon
DESCRIPTION:On July 20\, 1969\, the lads from Apollo 11 landed on the Moon making “one small step…” Now we all know about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin but spare a thought for Michael Collins. While the boyos were bouncing about planting the flag\, poor old Collins only got to fly to the moon and stay in orbit. The Evening Press declared Monday July 21 to be ‘Moonday’ on their masthead and Bishop Fulton Sheen delivered a prayer in the Carmelite Church on Whitefriar Street which was carried on the front page. \nYou can see some of the news clippings including a ‘here’s one we made in anticipation’ RTE Guide in the National Print Museum’s acknowledgement of how the moon landing impacted upon us and was received. It is accompanied by an exhibition of second year NCAD illustration students whereby they interpret the theme of the moon into their letterpress prints. \nNational Print Museum until July 21 (at least)

SUMMARY:Typecast - David Booth
DESCRIPTION:Typecast is the first solo show by Dublin based artist David Booth. Booth’s practice deals primarily with painting and drawing\, using both traditional acrylic and oil paint on canvas but often incorporating mixed media on unconventional surfaces. Sympathetic to the human form Booth’s attention is largely monopolised toward portraiture. While engaging with a widely traditional format such as is portraiture\, it is Booth’s stark contrast between hyper-realistic detailed features and graphic illustrative brush strokes which carry his paintings into the contemporary. Rather than an intention to display the expression or likeness of a human subject\, Booth’s subjects are often anonymous; displaying the expression of the artistic gesture. \nOccupied by the ongoing study into representation of identity\, Typecast is the result of this ongoing theme. While working from his own resources\, source imagery is developed in collaboration with contemporary photographers Philip White\, Cayne Kxa and Eric van Kampen. Booth uses the portrait as a starting point that usually distills other multidimensional viewpoints. As the concept and vernacular of identity is reorienting\, Booth recontextualises the term typecast to challenge these developments and how they refer to social\, psychological factors. \n \nDavid Booth completed his BFA at Wexford Campus School of Art. In 2013 he moved to Dublin to begin his full time career as an artist and has since exhibited both nationally and internationally. Booth has featured in The Irish Times\, The Independent and has been awarded the Evans Painting Prize in 2016. His painting ‘Unit’ was selected for the Zurich Portrait Prize 2018/19 at The National Gallery of Ireland. Booth was recently accepted to the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. His work is held in both private and public collections including Order of Public Works (O.P.W) and various private collections in Ireland and Europe. \nRuns until June 29 (artist talk on 26 at 6pm)

SUMMARY:Taking Time
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work from twelve Irish craftspeople\, Taking Time illustrates the innate value of craft and celebrates the makers who imbue a sense of contemplation within their work. The exhibition marks the culmination of over six months of work by a group of Men’s Shed members in collaboration with curator Orlaith Ross. The group took part in a range of workshops and demonstrations\, which informed the curatorial process and galvanised the men to select three themes which became the foundations of the exhibition – time and skill; the beauty of poetry; and nature. Artists featured include metalwork artist Jane Murtagh\, basket weaver Hann van Aeist\, glass artist Roisin de Buitlear (pictured) and glass artist Emma Bourke. Until June 9

SUMMARY:BINGO!
DESCRIPTION:BINGO! marks the second manifestation of the Berlin Opticians Gallery in a physical space. For this iteration\, the Gallery inhabits the stunning octagonal Exhibition Room in the City Assembly House\, following the inaugural exhibition in the semi-domestic interiors of Merrion Square last year. \nBINGO! presents some recent and newly commissioned artworks by ten Irish and international artists whose practice spans all art forms: painting\, sculpture\, photography\, installation\, and video. It celebrates the unlikely relationship between contemporary art and Georgian architecture\, acknowledging both the moments of happy and successful co-existence and the possible tensions. \nImage: David Beattie / Broken Tools \nFeaturing work by:  David Beattie (IRL)\, Neil Carroll (IRL)\, Paul Hallahan (IRL)\, Emma Hayes (IRL)\, Barbara Knezevic (AUS/IRL)\, Alicia Reyes McNamara (USA)\, Sarah O’Brien (IRL)\, Liliane Puthod (FR)\, Sven Sandberg (USA)\, Lee Welch (USA/IRL) \nPreview: Wednesday 5 June 6-8pm \nExhibition continues:\nThursday 6 June —Saturday 8 June 10am—6pm\nSunday 9 June 12pm—6pm

SUMMARY:Lesley Ann O'Connell | Midnight Swim
DESCRIPTION:When you look at O’Connell’s paintings\, over time it becomes apparent that they are in flux\, spatially and temporally. Nothing within them is static and instead moods drift over the canvas and furtive notions make a brisk appearance. The titles of the work refer to atmospheric vignettes that conjure sensory experience\, leaving an emotional imprint. In Midnight Swim\, the moon spills its reflection over the choppy tide and unexpected colours lap over the waves and pierce through clouds. They are strange and mysterious compositions that incorporate elements of visionary landscape painting\, still life and abstraction. Experientially\, the paintings have a tendency to leave the viewer unmoored\, with very little by way of logic or points of reference to cleave to. And yet in this negation\, other ideas of abstraction release\, allowing for a more existential capacity within the paintings. \nO’Connell has described a painting process in which her own handling of paint is secondary to the potential for chance and caprice to inform the work. Compositions are often dismantled or obliterated by unpredictable gestures\, causing them to digress or to re-iterate a motif that has endured within them. It is an explorative process whereby the urge to glean a sense of satisfaction from chance aesthetic unity is constantly set aside by O’Connell who continues to reset paintings and pose contradictions within them. She is an artist who is less interested in controlling the medium or imposing a resolve and instead she allows the paintings to coalesce on their own terms. \nSometimes\, tentative suggestions seek each other out and converse across a plain of faded palimpsest and they are let alone – their frivolity contrasting with the dense residual patina of the painting’s own history. In this way the forms\, colours\, marks\, washes and tones within the paintings cooperate to create a sense of drama. In some instances\, paintings appear to have been imprinted upon each other\, giving a sense of resonance amidst a cacophony of marks. The paintings inform each other\, grow from one another and in some cases are cannibalised by each other\, recurring as collage elements and composites of another painting.  \nThis is a reflection of the myriad temporal and spatial dismissals that occur within O’Connell’s compositions. The viewer is allowed glimpses from numerous perspectives that soar to bird’s eye vantage points and drop into subterranean chasms. The paintings can be disorientating and idiosyncratic and still they retain a sense of synchronicity. \nUntil June 29

SUMMARY:LCD Soundsystem
DESCRIPTION:Ruvan Wijesooriya first met James Murphy at a house party in the Lower East Side in 2000. \nOur first show was just…“Do you want to go to London and stay at a fancy hotel and play this weird show for free? You’ll get your airfare and your hotel room paid for and your drinks and maybe a dinner…” and we were like\, “Fuck it\, why not? I hate my job so let’s go!” \nWijesooriya ended up documenting LCD on their spectacular rise\, becoming their trusted go to man behind the lens and releasing a book about his time with them. \nWijesooriya has collaborated with artist Joe Henry to create 11 paintings to go alongside the photographs and re-create LCD Pop Artworks in his own artistic language also. \nOpen Gate Brewery until Thursday and Friday 5:30pm to 10:30pm and Saturdays 2pm – 8pm\, €9 include a tasting paddle. SUMMARY:The Invention of Memory
DESCRIPTION:The 10th edition of the Photo Ireland festival kicks off a 3 month series of launches culminating with the residency of the Museum of Contemporary Photography in the Printworks in Dublin Castle in July. This month Rathfarnham Castle plays host to this group show which creates a discourse between artists’ works\, exploring different types of memories – national\, personal\, familial\, landscape\, gender. Benedetta Casagrande and partner Leonardo Falascone’s new project Maria di Magdala investigates creation of the myth of Saint Mary Magdalene\, its implication in the sacred landscapes of South France\, the fabrication of relics\, and the overall journey of transformations undertaken by her identity in history. Franco-Armenian artist Lucie Khakhoutian reflects on her national\, spiritual\, and familial identity\, questioning her current state of belonging\, by exploring her family history and childhood memories.  \nIrish work comes from Clare Lyons whose new body of work Back Into Your Mind\, confronts her past. Creating sculptural images\, she attempts to uncover repressed and suppressed memories\, and what’s hiding underneath the creases\, to better understand how that confusion and trauma has shaped her identity. Yvette Monahan presents Beyond the ninth wave addressing trauma within the landscape\, mirroring the layers of memory and pain buried deep in the Irish psyche. \nUntil May 31

SUMMARY:Snap Judgements
DESCRIPTION:Self-image\, self-presentation and social judgment are explored through the lens of three photographers – Haley Morris-Cafiero\, Daragh Soden and Eva O’Leary. Soden’s acclaimed Young Dubliners series from a few years ago should be known to most capturing the carefree jump off moment of youth. Morris-Cafiero’s Wait Watchers sees her insert herself into the frame of a ‘social experiment’ as she performs mundane tasks such as reading maps registering the reaction of the unwitting passers-by in the process. O’Leary’s Spitting Image documents how women see themselves in the mirror with all its inherent complex paradoxes. A thoughtful trio of complimentary works. Until Sunday May 26

SUMMARY:Irish Art Now: Contemporary Art Auction
DESCRIPTION:Pallas Projects/Studios\, who have been breaking new ground for Irish visual arts and culture since 1996\, are to showcase the work of Irish contemporary artists in a NYC-style fundraising auction\, with the help of Whyte’s and The Irish Georgian Society. \nThis exciting collaboration between the auction house and the artist-run space will introduce Irish contemporary art – painting\, print\, photography and sculpture – to seasoned auction-goers\, with many affordable works and the chance to secure a choice piece by a major Irish artist\, or to grab a bargain by a future prospect. \nIt also presents a great opportunity for budding collectors to enjoy the auction experience for the first time\, and start a collection of their own with a unique artwork. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIt will demonstrate the strength and breadth of Irish contemporary art: with renowned Irish painters\, already familiar to the auction house\, alongside internationally-established artists\, who are already selling work through the leading Irish contemporary and international galleries and art-fairs (Frieze\, Art Basel)\, exhibiting at home in museums (IMMA\, The Hugh Lane)\, and far and wide in art biennales (Venice Biennale) and international institutions. \nThe lots include specially created work by Willie Doherty\, twice nominated for the Turner Prize\, and British artist Liam Gillick\, who exhibits regularly in Ireland with Kerlin Gallery and represented Germany in the 53rd Venice Biennale\, both of whom have produced new one-off pieces especially for the occasion. In addition the auction will feature the work of many hugely talented emerging artists who have been championed by Pallas in recent years. \nRun with the support of Whyte’s\, who are graciously donating their fees to support the not-for-profit sector\, it will take place in the grandeur of the Octagonal room of the City Assembly House\, aptly built by the Society of Artists in Ireland between 1765-71\, as the first public exhibition gallery in Ireland and Britain. \nThe event promises to be an entertaining spectacle\, with pop-up food\, drinks (from the likes of Teeling Whiskey and Galway Bay craft brewery)\, and surprise guests (such as Ardal O’Hanlon who previously launched the event). \nThis gala evening will showcase how contemporary art is connected to the continuum of art history\, dealing with aesthetics\, style and concepts that can be seen to channel and chart a line from the old masters – through to 20th century Irish modernists Mary Swanzy\, Louis le Brocquy\, Cecil King and Patrick Scott – right up to the most cutting-edge work being produced today. \nPictured: Sean Molloy (Philip’s Head XIX) & Abigail O’Brien (Blazing Star) \nDate: Thursday 2nd May 2019\, 6–9 pm (auction starts 7pm)\nViewing days: Tuesday 30th April (2–6pm)\, Wednesday 1st & Thursday 2nd May (12–6pm)

SUMMARY:Local
DESCRIPTION:‘Local’ presents an overview of Pete Smyth’s ongoing photography project documenting aspects of life in Tallaght\, West Dublin. One of Ireland’s leading documentary photographers – Smyth lives in Killinarden in Tallaght. The exhibition brings together his renowned portrait series ‘Traveller’ and ‘View from the Dearth’ shown here for the first time alongside his work charting street and nightlife in and around Tallaght. \nSpanning a period of over 30 years ‘Local’ reflects Smyth’s own political concerns and experiences as a community arts worker and social activist. Smyth has had a level of access to his subjects and a capacity to portray their experiences denied to photographers from outside the community. \nCollectively the works create an intimate portrait that captures bittersweet moments of private reflection and public reverie. Aware of the dynamics and complexities of his dual role of observer and subject\, Smyth’s unsentimental representation of Tallaght and its people makes visible the social and physical transformations the area has undergone. ‘Local’ charts the development of Tallaght from a socially deprived outlying suburb to urban centre with a strong sense of community. \n

SUMMARY:Eamonn Doyle
DESCRIPTION:This is the big spring photo exhibition – not just in scale\, though 65 of the 135 prints are over two metres in size. It’s a celebration of hometown D1 head Eamonn Doyle showcasing his city street photography trilogy i\, ON and End along with his latest work K. It coincides with the launch of Made in Dublin (Thames & Hudson) which combines his trilogy with new prints and accompanying vignettes by writer Kevin Barry. As part of the St Patrick’s Festival\, it is the fruition of a long-standing friendship and working partnership between Doyle and Karen Walshe and moves on to Fundación Mapfre in Madrid in September.  \nThe opening weekend will also include Made in Dublin – a nine-screen\, surround-sound panoramic created in association with Doyle’s collaborators Niall Sweeney (design) and David Donohoe (sound). His photographs meld with a visceral\, labyrinthine soundtrack\, the city and its people merge and collide\, braced against the light. Giant and diminutive figures stride and stumble\, taking position on a world-stage full of obstacles\, and then all moving together – their constant ebb and flow revealing a collective unconscious dance\, poised on a knife-edge of past and future. At moments it seems to stretch the city itself to breaking point\, and yet it is always Dublin. \nRHA\, Friday March 15 to Monday April 22

DESCRIPTION:A series of new curated art works\, performances\, artefacts and a new publication. Citizen Artist (2016 – 2018) was formed against the backdrop of the decade of commemorations. It invited artists or collectives and local groups to consider the diverse realities of citizenship 100 years later. Located in studio 468 in St Andrew’s Community Centre Rialto\, it invited the production of ideas\, values\, and sharing between the five artists and local collectives and groups. \nFor over two years this included Laragh Pittman’s collaboration with women from the Amal Women’s Group that created The Invisible Museum which highlights the complexity of identity and place between cultures in Ireland; Fiona Reilly’s Department of Time Keepers that documents the reality and precarity of time and work;  Seoidín O’Sullivan’s collaborative art project  Hard/Graft that challenges us to plant trees for free food access and lobby for more green space across Dublin City;  Pat Curran’s paintings that ground us in the community life of public housing across Dublin 8 including Fatima Mansions\, Dolphin House and St Michael’s Estate; and Mark Holburn’s challenge to us all to be ‘Rebels for Art’. \nUntil April 15\, Kilmainham Courthouse. \n
