SUMMARY:Sharú
DESCRIPTION:Sharú is a group exhibition bringing together the work of ten artists. The exhibition reflects a multicultural and multinational group of artists working in Ireland today. Together they present painting drawing sculpture and photography that explore ideas of identity roots and ongoing transformation. \nAt the heart of Sharú is the belief that the artist is someone who transcends. From the first spark of an idea through engagement with materials and into the final act of making the work the everyday practice of art becomes an act of transformation. These processes lift material objects into a deeper space of meaning while also inviting moments of reflection and growth for both the artist and the viewer. \nWork from the following artists will be featured in the exhibition: Ishmael Claxton\, Nadia Dev\, Alicia Donnan\, Molly Buí Hennessy\, Helen Kirk\, Gabriel Lobo\, Nicole Manning\,  Nyah  O’Connor\, Brady Izquierdo Rodriguez\, and Eva Vitkute.  \nThe opening event takes place at TØN on January 15th from 6pm-9pm.  \nThe exhibition runs at at TØN Gallery until Sunday Feb 1st.The gallery is open from 12pm to 4pm\, Thursday to Sunday.

SUMMARY:Urban Myth
DESCRIPTION:This month sees Kevin Kavanagh present ‘Urban Myth’\, a group exhibition of photography by gallery and invited artists. These artists demonstrate the changing role of photographs in our digital world. No longer just records of the real or of a moment in time\, they have become the basis of our modern folklore. Where once we gathered round the fire to share stories\, now we pass images from screen to screen. For all the solidity of the phone in our hand\, these images flow by in a turbulent stream. \nAs urban myths\, this folklore permeates every aspect of our daily lives. They are an articulation of our fears and insecurities\, an attempt to put order on an increasingly chaotic world\, and a measure of the society we think we live in. As short videos and memes\, they are the driving force behind much social media. Increasingly\, they dictate the direction of populist politics and of society itself. \nIn ‘Urban Myth’ the photographers become storytellers. The stories they tell grapple with the underlying drivers of our new digital urban lives. They reflect our desires and our fears in a world of isolated individuals cut off from their natural roots and struggling with the unknown. \nAs information becomes less reliable\, the perceived unknown becomes more threatening. There may be monsters here\, but what are they?… \nExtract from an accompanying text written by Martin Shiels.  \nUrban Myth opens at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery on Thursday 8th January from 6pm\, featuring work from artists:\nMichael Boran | Elaine Byrne | Gary Coyle | Dragana Jurišić | Sean Lynch | Scott Nokia | Adrian O’Carroll | Izabela Szczutkowska \nThe exhibition runs from 8th January – 7th February 2026. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday 11am – 5pm

SUMMARY:Lucid Dreaming\, dlr Open Exhibition 2025
DESCRIPTION:‘Art is a crystallisation of fantasy.  Of our fevered desires\, flippant whims and untold fears. It – like the ancient practice of lucid dreaming – is difficult to master. Children are more adept at both these things than adults.  The subconscious hasn’t been walled off yet by the psychological hurdles adolescence brings.  The skill of the artist is the skill of the lucid dreamer: that of control.  To temper the base air of the psyche to some sort of distilled resolution’.  – Davey Moor \nDún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is currently showing Lucid Dreaming\, dlr Open Exhibition of visual art by artists who have studied in\, are originally from\, or are living or working in the County. Artists were invited to submit work on the theme of Lucid Dreaming. The exhibition was selected and curated by Royal Hibernian Academy Curator\, Davey Moor\, through an open submission process. Moor has worked as a curator since 2004 in a range of independent and institutional roles\, including Monster Truck\, 2008-2014.  He was previously a Director of Kevin Kavanagh Gallery 2008-2010 and Collections Manager and Registrar at the Irish State Art Collection at the OPW from 2010-2024. \nAlongside the exhibition\, dlr Arts Office is also running a programme of accompanying talks\, workshops and events. This offers many opportunities for people of all ages to interact with the gallery in different ways\, learning about and trying out different art-making techniques. \nFor further details\, visit the website:  dlrcoco.ie/arts \nImage credit: Eimear Carvill\, Tranquility 1\, 2025 \nLucid Dreaming\, Selected and Curated by Davey Moor\, Curator\, Royal Hibernian Academy\, Dublin runs at dlr Lexicon from 7 December 2025 – 15 February 2026

SUMMARY:Stephanie Deady - Emotional Calculus
DESCRIPTION:“Thrilling\, quicksilver arrangements of fierce movement\, Deady’s new paintings are also\, and simultaneously\, models of balance\, poise and restraint: amalgams of sensibility and sense\, feeling and thought. With their intricate\, concentric patterning and vigorous\, rhythmic pulse\, they relate metaphorically to the currency of daily life\, the colour of moods and feelings and the dynamics of human relationships. \nOccupying a space free from the rules of naturalistic representation\, the paintings fuse inner and outer worlds\, and allow for a longer\, considered view over time. The energies of the compositions are in most cases generated by two adjoining figures\, and the way they create and are in turn shaped by the traffic of interaction between them. \nPowerful internal currents animate each of them\, whole worlds of feeling. As with the artist’s earlier Measure for Measure works\, this entails a powerful intimation of bodily presence and action: a choreography of stance\, attitude\, movement\, gesture\, nuance – and vision. Colour\, sparing yet intense\, sets the temperature of the mood. Spatially\, we are in a zone as expansive as a biblical desert\, and as abstract\, in which we try to orient ourselves.” –  Aidan Dunne \nOpening Thursday 20th November at 6pm\, Stephanie Deady – Emotional Calculus runs at The Kevin Kavanagh Gallery from Thursday November 20th – Saturday December 20th 2025 \nFeature Image: Stephanie Deady\, Emotional Calculus\, oil on birch plywood\, 26 x 35.5 cm\, 2025

SUMMARY:The Empathy Machine
DESCRIPTION:Artist Maija Tammi is known for her radical storytelling through the medium of video\, photography and installations. This acclaimed work offers audiences a rare chance to engage with Tammi’s unique exploration of empathy\, emotion\, and human connection through the lens of contemporary photography. \nA Book With Two Beginnings \nThe winner of the prestigious Finnish Photobook Award 2023\, Hulda / Lilli explores empathy through storytelling. Designed to be read from both ends\, it offers two intersecting journeys: one from the perspective of the predator\, the other from the prey. In the centre\, their paths collide — and the reader decides where their empathy lies. \nPhoto Museum of Ireland is currently hosting the Irish premiere of The Empathy Machine. The exhibition on show from 8 November 2025 – 1 February 2026 \nFree entry. All welcome.

SUMMARY:Undercurrent: As Below\, So Above
DESCRIPTION:Undercurrent: As Below\, So Above brings together the work of Kat Austen\, Lauren Moffatt and Siobhán McDonald developed during their participation in S+T+ART4WaterII in residence in Galway\, Belfast and Dublin port. The projects explore and reflect on ports as interdisciplinary liminal spaces for reimagining our entanglements with water\, technology\, and ecology. \nLauren Moffatt’s Chorcorallium immerses visitors in speculative reef ecologies where industrial debris becomes the foundation for imagined coral life\, shaped by collective voices and artificial intelligence. \nKat Austen’s ~~ Not Breaking ~~ ~~ This Wave Drowns Hate ~~ listens to the ocean through microplastics and community-created AI\, offering visions of symbiotic futures. \n \nSiobhán McDonald’s SHAPESHIFTER traces Dublin Port’s shifting identities\, from wetlands to rising seas\, layering scientific data with film\, painting\, and sculpture to reveal unseen histories and fragile futures. \nTogether\, these works transform ports and oceans into sites of imagination and repair\, using art and technology to question how we might live with\, listen to\, and learn from water in an age of crisis and change. \nBeta\, the Arts & Technology Festival\, will run from November 7th to 23rd. Many of the events are free. \nFor the complete programme\, see 2025.betafestival.ie

SUMMARY:Geraldine O'Neill - First It Flickers
DESCRIPTION:First it flickers and then it tips (us out of the Holocene). \nArtist Geraldine O’Neill has long responded to the increasing confrontation with human engagement and relationship with the ecosystem\, in particular the Anthropocene whose traces are now embedded within the geological layers of the Earth’s structure. Her new exhibition\, Flicker\, Flicker\, responds to the escalating tension between humanity and the natural world. Her work speaks directly to the Anthropocene\, our current epoch\, where human presence is inscribed into the geological fabric of the earth. \nFor O’Neill\, this presence is made vivid through the everyday. Domestic references\, images of her children\, and items from her studio mingle with art-historical fragments\, still birds\, and household detritus. These layered references move between the personal and the collective\, situating the intimacy of home life within broader cultural and ecological frameworks. \nO’Neill’s distinctive painterly approach\, grounded in conceptual rigour and technical mastery\, reanimates these instances across time and memory. Through her colour-saturated virtuosity\, she creates surfaces that are at once sobering and luminous\, reflecting on the fragility of our world while offering a space of haunting beauty. \nThe exhibition runs from October 16th – November 15th 2025 at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery. \nFeature Image: Geraldine O’Neill\, Mise en scène\, 2025

SUMMARY:Artistic Islands
DESCRIPTION:Taking place at Dublin Castle Museum through to March 22nd 2026\, this exciting exhibition identifies Ireland and its diaspora as places where creative genius was always encouraged. \n\n\nVisitors can experience Irish art and its global impact in new ways at Dublin Castle’s Coach House Gallery\, where parallel stories of artistic genius and diversity are expressed through the work of Maria Simonds-Gooding and Frank Walter of Antigua\, each of whom have deep connection to their island landscapes. Irish artist\, Maria Simonds-Gooding\, has a particular connection and affinity to the OPW-managed Blasket Islands. In this exhibition\, she captures timeless histories of the heritage of Ireland as found in its ancient landscape. For more than sixty years\, Maria has engaged with and responded to the Irish landscape in a variety of artistic media\, including ink\, paint\, plaster and aluminum. She was also a formative influence on Micheál O’Gaoithín\, the Blasket’s great visual artist and poet. \nArtistic Islands expands outward from Ireland to the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands\, where a far-flung global diaspora comes into focus. From the 1630’s\, Irish people were sent to the Caribbean arriving as indentured servants mixing with enslaved persons of African descent\, merging cultures to form a resilient society. Worlds collided in these sun-drenched islands where much of their tradition expressing the breadth and impact of their creative genius remains. This brilliance shines in the artistic achievement of Antiguan polymath Frank Walter\, who saw himself\, among others\, as an Irish peer. \nWalter used art to create his own universe–an aesthetically pleasing environment manifest through painting\, sculpture\, music and the arts. Imbued with a high intellect and deep knowledge of history and culture\, Walter fought to protect the heritage of his tiny island nation. He painted abstract paintings\, using the intricate patterns of seeds used in Antiguan seedwork – one of the earliest artforms unique to his island nation\, dating back to the earliest arrival of enslaved persons from Africa. \nFunded by the legacy of Frank Walter\, seedwork survives to this day thanks to a group of Antiguan women whose work will be portrayed along with Walter’s paintings to express the timelessness of these art forms. \nThe ‘Artistic Islands’ exhibition takes place at Dublin Castle until March 22nd 2026.

SUMMARY:Alice Maher - The Sibyls
DESCRIPTION:‘In The Sibyls\, Alice Maher presents a series of monumental drawings of female figures entangled in\, or twisting free from\, vast snaking mounds of hair. At the base of these drawings the artist has placed small piles of highly polished\, irregular objects— amorphous forms that resemble great globs of mercury. The title of the series\, The Sibyls\, references the oracular women of archaic times\, seers who lived apart from society and were believed to channel the prophesies of the divine. In Renaissance art these figures were transformed into biblical prophetesses\, pictured holding scrolls or books\, as in Michelangelo’s majestic turban-clad sibyls in the Sistine chapel. \nMaher’s Sibyls are different – rather than resting serenely in the architecture of institutional belief or patriarchal systems of meaning\, these Sibyls are altogether more dynamic and equivocal. Their scrolls have morphed into chaotic skeins of hair; their turbans twisted into massive living organisms that envelop\, extend from\, and consume their heads\, while their powerful bodies struggle and strain to impart their portentous message… \n \n…Culturally coded as either dangerous or shameful depending on its context\, hair becomes here a visual agent of instability. Are the Sibyls coming into being through this dense matrix of bodily material\, or are they caught in the web of their own weaving? Are they rising or falling\, emerging or succumbing? The signs are deliberately destabilising; their meanings are as slippery and shifting as the mysterious sculptural shapes tumbled below.’ \nThe above extract is taken from an Accompanying Text written by Dr Sarah Kelleher. \nAlice Maher\, The Sibyls opens at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery on  Thursday September 11th. The exhibition runs until October 11th. \nTo coincide with The Sibyls\, the Gallery is hosting an evening with Alice Maher and Jesse Jones: In Conversation on Thursday September 11th at 6pm. \nImage Credits \nFeature Image: Alice Maher\, Vox Sibyllae\, Cast bronze\, nickel plated sculptures\, dimensions variable\, 2018-2025.  Photography Credit: Ros Kavanagh \nImage 2: Alice Maher\, Sibyl I\, Charcoal\, graphite and chalk on paper\, 245 x 152 cm\, 2025.  Photography Credit: Ros Kavanagh

SUMMARY:Black Church Print Studio Presents The Soft Fall of Land
DESCRIPTION:This autumn sees Black Church Print Studio present its new exhibition\, The Soft Fall of Land\, curated by Ciara Hickey. \nThis exhibition brings together new work by Bassam Issa Al-Sabah\, Sighle Bhreathnach-Cashell\, Chloe Brenan\, Aisling Conroy\, Grace Ryan and Soft Fiction Projects. It considers the idea of Utopia and examines the pursuit of this imagined\, impossible and aspirational state from a range of perspectives. The artworks in the exhibition oscillate between escapism and activism\, fantasy and instruction for creating an alternative\, better world. \nSighle Bhreathnach-Cashell and Bassam Issa al-Sabah have each made a new series of prints directing us into dense\, imagined worlds\, created from a personal lexicon of symbols drawn from the artists’ history\, experience and critical response to the humanitarian\, social and ecological issues pervading contemporary life. \nAl-Sabah’s monochromatic prints\, made during his Process Residency at Black Church Studios\, evoke imagery from his moving image works and installations\, where sublime\, seductive digital landscapes offer speculative worlds in which dystopian and utopian scenarios meet and intersect. Bhreathnach-Cashell\, known for her immersive installations and activist work has created a new series of aquatint etchings\, ‘Ulster Cycles’. The work translates years of the artist’s unseen drawings and depict mimetic figures using Celtic\, biological and architectural imagery\, conjuring contemporary fables and cautionary tales. \nFor Grace Ryan and Chloe Brenan\, two studio members at Black Church Print Studio\, the invitation to think about Utopian ideals led them to a close examination of the natural world. Ryan will create a sculptural composition in the gallery based on Ikebana—the ancient Japanese art of flower arrangement rooted in balance\, asymmetry\, and the harmony between humans and nature. \nChloe Brenan’s current work is focused on the microcosm of an orchard in Carlow that is located beside her family home. Originally created as a colonial project to order and control the land\, the orchard is now overgrown\, the traces of colonial past are muted by the unabetted growth of weeds and shrubs over decades. The artist has used Super 8 photography to mark the process of observing the orchard and acknowledging the small changes and diversity of plant life as dictated by time\, climate and chance. Brenan’s work in this exhibition represents the first and last frames of a roll of film on which she photographed the orchard\, the edges of which are singed\, capturing the moment that an image is simultaneously created and extinguished. \nBlack Church Print Studio member Aisling Conroy continues her exploration of sound and cymatics\, the study of vibrational phenomena. This new work comprises a grid of 40 prints representing the 40 Chladni plates\, a methodology developed by Ernst Chladni in 1787 as a visual manifestation of sound vibrations\, looking at the patterns produced by sounds on flat plates made by a bow. The work offers an invitation to think about the invisible forces that shape our reality and consider the possibilities of new languages and systems for understanding and grappling with the unknown. \nSoft Fiction Projects (Alessia Cargnelli and Emily McFarland) are an initiative that produce printed and digital matter to explore archives of underrepresented voices\, oppositional histories and geopolitical narratives. For the exhibition they have produced a free print that can be taken by visitors. The print is based on Women’s News\, a Belfast collective-run publication active between 1984 and 2011\, who used the medium of print matter as a method for generating common ground\, sharing experiences and encouraging community building. This leaflet uses DIY approaches to archival material\, collected from MayDay Rooms\, as a way to reimagine and revisit this history.\nThe exhibition continues at The Library Project until Saturday 27 September 2025. Opening hours: Mon – Fri 11 am – 6 pm\, Sat 12 – 6 pm.

SUMMARY:Kith & Kin: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Museum of Modern Art presents Kith & Kin: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend\, Ireland’s first exhibition of a renowned 200-year tradition. The Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers\, a group of African American women from a small Alabama community\, create artistically and politically significant quilts that celebrate both African American heritage and the strength and creativity of women in the face of systemic oppression. \nThe bold and abstract quilts are made from recycled fabrics and are deeply rooted in African American textile traditions. They also represent the resilience and self-sufficiency of the quiltmakers\, who gained attention during the Civil Rights movement and became symbols of Black empowerment and cultural pride. \nThe exhibition is on display now until October 27\, 2025. SUMMARY:Jorge Satorre: Did I Say I Miss You?
DESCRIPTION:Jorge Satorre’s exhibition Did I say I miss you?  brings together sculpture and drawing in a playful\, self-reflective exploration of storytelling\, craft\, and materiality. At its centre is a large new sculpture\, constructed from a steel armature and hand-woven hazel sticks and brambles—an intentionally risky\, solitary process marked by scratches and cuts. Alongside this are pencil drawings depicting insects inhabiting the gallery\, socialising and observing art. \nSatorre abandons traditional fables in favour of unresolved narratives\, using humour and precision to invite a deeper look at how meaning and form continually shift. \nTemple Bar Gallery + Studios until July 6th \ntemplebargallery.com

SUMMARY:Shorelines 2 - Dublin Painting and Sketching Club
DESCRIPTION:Shorelines 2\, is a vibrant exhibition\, exploring Dublin’s varied seascapes through brand-new works from some of Ireland’s most exciting artists. \nThe exhibition of traditional painting and drawing embraces a remarkably wide range of styles\, ranging from semi-abstracts\, like Mary Duffy’s Windy Day on Sandymount to the photo-realism of Vincent Smith’s Dun Laoghaire. The glowing Impressionism of Anne McNulty’s Red Cranes in the Distance contrasts with the dramatic Devil’s Cove by Brian Manning. \nBlue\, green and grey form the dominant colour harmonies\, but Patrick Cahill\, Kayla Martell and Brian Gallagher respond to their subjects with wonderfully warm tones. Their paintings\, drawings and etchings reflect the life of our endlessly changing coastline.Using more limited pallets\, Susan Early’s etchings and Sorcha O’Farrell’s drawings are marvellously detailed and evocative. \nThis is the 151st year of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club’s exhibiting history. It was formed as a co-operative of artists\, in 1874\, with Nathaniel Hone\, John Butler Yeats\, Sarah Purser and Bram Stoker among its earlier members. Today\, club membership exceeds 90 and includes some of the country’s most illustrious painters\, sketch artists and print makers. \nVisitors to the exhibition will find a wealth of skill\, imagination and vision… a fitting testament to maritime Dublin and the long artistic tradition of the Club. \nCourtesy of the Dublin Port Company (DPC)\, the exhibition is housed in the Substation Gallery\, which is located at the entrance to Dublin Port\, on the corner of Alexandra Road. The exhibition is open to the public\, 11am-4.00pm\, from May 23rd to June 5th\, every day except Monday. Admission is free of charge.
