SUMMARY:Foggy Notions: Claire Rousay
DESCRIPTION:Spectacular San Antonio experimentalist Claire Rousay is touring behind the excellent ‘sentiment’\, her newest album through the ever-insightful Thrill Jockey records. \nThe record is a hazy collection of ambient electronic collage\, dreamy synth textures\, melancholy AutoTune and granular melodies seamed though with threads of jagged guitar\, with the field recordings of everyday life; voicemails\, haptics\, stop watches and whispers baying and weaving in and out of the mix. \nAs always\, Dublin promoters Foggy Notions can be relied upon to bring you staggeringly essential music\, delivered in beautiful confines\, collaborating with the Project Arts Theatre for an intimate performance that promises to be nothing short of spellbinding. \nClaire Rousay plays at The Project Arts Centre\, on Saturday June 1st

SUMMARY:Guinness Choir: Stanford’s ‘Mass in G’ + The Weaver + Cello Songs
DESCRIPTION:The Guinness Choir will present Stanford’s ‘Mass in G’ together with ‘The Weaver’ by Judith Ring and ‘Cello Songs’ by Jake Runestad in St. Andrew’s Church\, Dublin 2 on Saturday\, May 11th 2024. This much anticipated concert celebrates one of the great Dublin born composers\, Charles Villiers Stanford\, and includes short pieces from acclaimed contemporary composers\, Judith Ring and Jake Runestad. \n2024 is the centenary of the death of the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). Having graduated from University of Cambridge\, the Dublin musician undertook further studies in Leipzig and Berlin. Perhaps best known as the teacher of such great English composers as Vaughan Williams\, Gustav Holst\, Samuel Taylor-Coleridge and Herbert Howells\, recent years have seen Stanford increasingly recognised as an important composer in his own right. \nThe ‘Weaver’\, by Irish composer Judith Ring\, on a poem by Diane Tierney\, was commissioned by The Guinness Choir who performed its world premiere in May 2022. This concert sees them introduce the audience to the Irish premiere of ‘Cello Songs’ by the highly acclaimed US composer Jake Runestad. \nThis special concert sees The Guinness Choir and its professional Orchestra joined by soloists Caroline Behan (Soprano); Sarah Luttrell (Alto); William Pearson (Tenor); and Matthew Mannion (Bass). \n \nTickets (exc. booking fee): €35 Premium and €25. Limited Door sales (Card only). Public seating unreserved. No Interval.\n \n8.00pm\, Saturday\, May 11th\, St. Andrew’s Church\, Westland Row\, Dublin 2 \nFor more information please see guinnesschoir.org

SUMMARY:Live Collision Festival - Farah Elle
DESCRIPTION:Dubliner Farah Elle’s sound touches on her Libyan roots and Irish heritage with a contemporary pop sensibility\, while her evocative lyrics sing of growth and perseverance. Like contemporaries Sive and Laura Duff\, Elle’s unique approach defines her as a singer songwriter. This performance\, is part of the Live Collision Festival running from the 25th to the 27th of April. Back in 2016\, we had this to say: “Elle mixes a powerful stage presence with a curious blend of genres that sees her Irish accent drift into Arabic-influenced melismas”\, and she has only gotten better since. \nProject Arts Centre\, 25th April\, 9pm

SUMMARY:Jasmine Wood and Seán Being
DESCRIPTION:Now living in Dublin\, the Oregon born composer and multidisciplinary artist\, Jasmine Wood has brought her PNW DIY roots with her\, and from them has crafted a deep record of thoughtful composition and sublime abstraction in ‘Piano Reverb’. Utterly unconcerned with genre\, her work has touched on elements of noise\, modern classical and indie music\, and this evening offers the unique opportunity to see an album performed in the space it was recorded. \nSt Finian’s Church\, Dublin 2\, March 22\, 2024\, 8pm. SUMMARY:Glasshouse perform Ryuichi Sakamoto
DESCRIPTION:We watched Coda on MUBI recently. This documentary celebrated the remarkable legacy of composer Ryuichi Sakamoto exploring his life and work\, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artistic process of the renowned musician who passed away in March 2023. Best known for the soundtrack to Merry Christmas\, Mr Lawrence and being a founding member of Tokyo’s pioneering computer-pop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra\, Sakamoto had a prolific career composing soundtracks for the likes of Alejandro G Iñárritu and a beautiful final album 12 which was recorded during hospital stays. Glasshouse will perform a new arrangement of Sakamoto’s work adding this extra date after the first one before Christmas sold out.

SUMMARY:Christmas Carols
DESCRIPTION:Tis the season to pour some mulled wine and indulge one of the finest traditions. One of the reasons Christmas carols bring such a sense of consolation and connection is surely their familiarity. Most of us have sung them since our primary school days. We pride ourselves on knowing the words. As the word carol – a joyful song – suggests\, carols bring us together and connect us in groups of shared experience and feelings. The grand 19th Century congregational numbers – O Come All Ye Faithful for instance – is a rousing hymn of communal praise. Here are some which you can listen to or sing to your heart’s content. \n‘Peace on Earth’ Christmas Carols at Christ Church Cathedral with the St Mary’s College Singers\, Saturday December 2\, 8pm – 9.15pm\, €25. \nChristmas Carol Concert for Cancer Research\, Trinity College Chapel\, Tuesday December 5\, 6pm-7.30pm\, €30. \nNew Dublin Voices\, Christchurch Cathedral\, Saturday December 9\, 8pm\, €20/€25. \n‘Joy to the World’ Glória LGBT+ Choir\, St Andrew’s Church\, Friday December 15\, 7.30pm\, €20/€25.

SUMMARY:Jeff Mills presents Tomorrow Comes the Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow Comes the Harvest: Throw came about when the late afrobeat legend Tony Allen linked up with techno pioneer Jeff Mills to cross-pollinate their sounds in 2018 and see what happened. Sadly\, Allen shuffled off this mortal coil in 2020. Mills has persisted with the project bringing in tabla player Prabhu Edouard and keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary to fill the void ahead of an album release at the start of September. In truth\, you will know whether this is your thing fairly quickly placing it into the transcendental sonic spiritualism category or the ‘you couldn’t pay me…’ \n \nNational Concert Hall\, Saturday September 23\, €49.50

SUMMARY:Feist
DESCRIPTION:Last time we had Feist round these parts\, she was stepping away from a support slot with Arcade Fire (remember them?) after a flurry of sexual assault accusations against Win Butler emerged. Thankfully\, she is back on her own terms bringing her latest release Multitudes in tow. It’s a quieter affair than previous efforts\, one born of out the experience of becoming a parent and losing one. Recording with a digital eight-track recorder and nylon string guitar reflects the intimacy she brings to this release which slowly builds into beauts such as Borrow Trouble which will segue into the clutch of stratospheric hits off her 2007 breakthrough album The Reminder. \n \nNational Concert Stadium\, Wednesday September 6.

SUMMARY:Pulp
DESCRIPTION:There’s a lot of nostalgia rolling through town in June; Soft Cell\, Pet Shop Boys\, Gladys Knight\, Peter Gabriel\, Blur and Kraftwerk are all cropping up at some point. But Pulp is our pick of the lot. There’s a variety of reasons for this\, one very simple one is that it is on a Friday. \n \nThis made be a crude means of evaluation but there’s a lot to be said in getting the weekend started with a gig rather than having mid-week hesitations and fears. The last time we caught Pulp here was back in 2011 at the Electric Picnic when Jarvis Cocker proved he’s up there with Jagger and Cave when it comes to a spindly-leg strut. Sadly sans Steve Mackey\, their bass guitarist\, who died last year\, Pulp have witty bangers aplenty mostly culled from their Different Class and This is Hardcore. Let’s all meet up in the year 2023? \n \nSt Anne’s Park\, Friday June 9\, €49.90

DESCRIPTION:Founded by sonic architect and explorer Robert Raths aka ghostworker in 2007\, London-based label Erased Tapes is an independent record label that has consistently nurtured genre-defying artists whilst keeping an avant-garde ethos. This celebration pulls together some of their talent for a takeover of the Concert Hall akin to the much heralded Haunted Dancefloor event last year. \nElectronic producer Rival Consoles headlines while legendary ensemble Penguin Cafe will also perform. There’s a Kiasmos DJ set from Janus Rasmussen\, live performance from Galway-based American songsmith Peter Broderick\, the return of Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit\, a modular synth set from Brooklyn composer and Dawn of Midi-drummer Qasim Naqvi\, the first Irish solo show from Berlin-based cellist and long-time Nils Frahm collaborator Anne Müller\, plus a DJ set from the latest Erased Tapes family member\, French avant-RnB producer Crayon. Her critically acclaimed debut album has been described as “a luscious\, confident and carefree record that could only have been crafted by someone in complete control of their artistic intentions”. Accompanied by two dancers and Sean Nós singer\, Saileog Ní Cheannabháin\, Cosha blends the traditional with the contemporary in a scintillating performance not to be missed. \nNixer \nFormed in the early days of the pandemic\, it was in May 202 that Nixer took to the stage in their hometown of Dublin for what was their first proper Irish outing\, as part of The Road to the Great Escape. On their performance\, Hot Press Magazine wrote\, “In a complete change of pace\, electro-punk duo Nixer bounds to the stage to deliver their own musical assertion. Peggs and Nixer have stayed true to their fresh and Irish roots\, both musically and stylistically\, as they craft their sound of Irish alternative-electro music over in London. Catch the duo at Liberty Park\, Dublin on Saturday 22nd October. \nCooks But We’re Chefs \nCooks But We’re Chefs are a 7-piece band from Dublin. Their sound encapsulates elements of house\, funk\, jazz\, soul and hip-hop. Their highly energetic show has been well received across Ireland and the UK festival circuits. 2020 saw the release of their successful debut EP ‘Sports Day’ showcasing the wide variety of sounds the band has to offer. Each member brings their own flavour to the music\, creating an overall unique sound.  Dublin has always been an important part of Cooks But We’re Chefs\, with members coming from North Dublin (Raheny\, Howth\, Drumcondra)\, Lucan and Mountjoy Street in Dublin City. Mountjoy Street has played a vital role in the formation of the band. For five years\, it was where the band wrote\, rehearsed and recorded as well as performed\, featuring regularly at the annual street party. \nBlack Canvas Curations \nTobi Balogun\, Founder and Artistic Director of Black Canvas Curations\, presents a showcase of the rich subculture of neo Irish-Afrolism for Liberty Vibe. Neo Irish-Afrolism is a healthy blend of Irish\, UK\, West-African and American culture\, which is expressed using rap music\, social dance\, fashion and art. With performances from Luke Andrew Feeney\, Sly Sode\, Vithoria Escobar\, Adam Stapleton and more\, Black Canvas Curations will bring together new voices in Irish culture for a vibrant cross artform presentation. \nZeztra \n \nZeztra are a sister duo born and raised in East Wall\, Dublin. A local act excited to play a stone’s throw away from where they live\, their unique captivating harmonies are the driving force behind their sound. Of course\, being sisters\, they have been singing and creating music together from a very young age\, but it was only in 2019 that Zeztra formed. Opening for Maverick Sabre in the Academy Dublin in 2019 is when it all started to happen for Zeztra. From there\, they went on tour around the UK and US performing at several of his shows at classic venues such as Brixton Academy\, London and Rough Trade\, Brooklyn\, New York. \nTemi Nla \nChristian Temitope Elliot is a 17 year old Irish-Nigerian singer\, songwriter and producer from the North East Inner City’s Sheriff Street. Temi Nla\, meaning Temi the Great\, comes from his African name\, Temitope\, of his father’s Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. Temi has always been an entertainer. With inspirations such as Chris Brown and Neyo\, Temi started out as a producer making beats for his friends\, but soon realised his place was on the stage. Temi was born for the limelight. \nChloe Harris \nTwenty-two year old Chloe Harris has been singing for as long as she can remember. Born and raised on Sheriff Street\, Chloe has performed locally for many years\, from community talent shows to busking in the city centre. Chloe has even auditioned for the X Factor. Passionate about supporting and platforming local talent\, Chloe attributes her love of music and performance to her local youth centre\, The Swan\, and hopes to see others from her community follow in her footsteps. \nContour \nConan Wynne\, aka Contour\, supplies visuals and creates installations on an international scale. Providing animations and lighting for the big screen\, and more recently\, custom laser animation shows\, his work takes inspiration from glitch art and electronic music culture\, syncing abstract textures with geometrical fluctuations.

SUMMARY:Francesco Turrisi
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY award winning pianist Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot” by the press. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague\, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Since 2004 he has been working successfully as a freelance musician. He has released five genre-defying and critically acclaimed albums as a leader and two as co-leader (“Tarab” a cross boundary innovative ensemble that blends Irish and Mediterranean traditional music\, and “Zahr” a project that looks at connections between southern Italian traditional music and Arabic music). His latest piano solo album Northern Migrations was described as “delicate\, wistful and wholly engrossing” by the Irish Times. \n \nTurrisi has the following to say: “I first started thinking about a piano solo program in 2015\, when I got asked to perform a solo concert at the Hugh Lane gallery. I had flirted with that idea for a long time\, but somehow was always a bit intimidated by the format. I am used to collaborating and playing with ensembles that range from very large to very small\, but being all alone on a stage is a completely different energy. There is something very introspective about performing piano solo\, something about feeling very naked and exposed. At the same time there is the exhilarating feeling of being free to do whatever you want at any given moment. So it’s not a coincidence that a personal album such as Northern Migrations came about at a very difficult and transitional period in my life. A moment of big changes\, a moment of pain\, a moment of letting go of many things dear. \n“It’s about migration\, about being far from the origins\, about the nomadic life of musicians\, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss\, about pain and crisis\, about grief and about learning to let go.” \n“This album is a very deep and personal reflection on many things that have happened in my life until now. It’s about migration\, about being far from the origins\, about the nomadic life of musicians\, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss\, about pain and crisis\, about grief and about learning to let go. Northern Migrations is also about the journey that has been my experience as a musician and everything I have picked up on the way. It reflects on my Mediterranean roots\, on the modal melodies\, instruments and rhythms that connect Sicily with North Africa. It reflects on the early baroque music which I have studied and researched while living in the Netherlands\, on the harmonic and melodic ideas behind the music of the great keyboard masters of the 17th century. It reflects on my visceral passion for jazz\, the only music that I have properly studied at a conservatory\, on my passion for improvisation and for living the music moment by moment. There are probably too many other influences and connections that I can’t individually pinpoint in this music\, coming from my constant thirst for finding and understanding new forms of musical expression. After 15 years of different musical projects and recordings\, Northern Migrations represent a distilled version of my entire musical life.”

SUMMARY:SKYWALK - An astronaut looks back on the beauty of Earth from space in Steve Martland’s dreamy work
DESCRIPTION:Described as an ” “iconoclastic composer who crossed musical boundaries to create a distinctive\, edgy sound” Martland curated the infamous Factory Classical label of Factory Records. This is the first concert in a two-part retrospective on the works of the late Steve Martland\, juxtaposed with those of Renaissance composer Clément Janequin. \nCenturies apart\, Renaissance composer Clément Janequin and 20th-century composer Steve Martland both sought to reflect the sounds of daily life that surrounded them. For Janequin\, this meant bird calls\, street noises or\, in the final work of this concert\, La bataille\, a vivid depiction of the sounds of battle\, complete with trumpet calls\, cannon fire\, and the cries of the wounded. Martland evokes a different kind of battleground in Street Songs—with something of a medley of songs from children’s games\, often heard in the streets and on the playground. \n \n\nWhile we briefly depart from earthly life in Martland’s Skywalk\, imagining an astronaut walking in space and looking back on the planet in all its beauty\, we are grounded throughout by Janequin’s mass based on La bataille which weaves throughout the concert\, introducing us to some new borrowed element of the work with each movement\, before we finally arrive back at the chanson in its original form.\n\n\nProgramme\nMissa La Bataille (Kyrie\, Gloria) – Clément Janequin (France\, c. 1485-1558)\nSkywalk – Steve Martland (UK\, 1954-2013)\nMissa La Bataille (Credo) – Clément Janequin\nStreet Songs – Steve Martland\nMissa La Bataille (Sanctus\, Benedictus\, Agnus) – Clément Janequin\nThe Shepherd’s Song – Steve Martland\nLa Bataille – Clément Janequin

SUMMARY:Craig Taborn - Shadow Plays
DESCRIPTION:Innovative US pianist Craig Taborn returns to Ireland as part of his European tour of Shadow Plays. Craig is internationally acclaimed for his formidable career\, as a sideman\, co-leader and as a soloist on ECM records\, a label that has defined the high bar solo piano performance. He has long backed many of the most forward-thinking improvisers\, including James Carter\, Tim Berne\, Chris Potter and Dave Douglas.   \nA fearless improviser\, he has the reputation of “disappearing almost completely into his music” [New York Times]\, and is recognised as one of the best living jazz pianists. \nWith his latest ECM release\, “Shadow Plays”\, Taborn explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his material. His control of his craft\, as he unerringly creates narratives and structures from the hint of a revealed pattern\, following where intuition and experience lead him\, is extraordinary.

SUMMARY:The Mary Wallopers save Paddy's Day
DESCRIPTION:One year ago\, Covid decimated the music industry and the first band out of the blocks were The Mary Wallopers. Unfazed by the immeasurable obstacle dropped in their path and forgoing all the industry grants\, the three Dundalk men self-built a pub/studio in their house\, becoming one of the first bands in the world to host a livestream on St. Patrick’s Day 2020. \nCreating a space where Wayne’s World meets Irish ballads\, the show brought joy with over 40 thousand people watching it in the first 24 hours alone. They connected people through the chat room and speaking directly to camera the Wallopers have made their show unmissable to those trapped in lockdown or overseas. \nTwo episodes later with one at Halloween and one at Christmas they introduced the Walloper’s extended family with musical guests like CMAT\, Daragh Lynch (Lankum)\, Radie Peat and Katie Kim alongside guest appearances from Junior Brother and Shane McGowan (The Pogues). \nTonight they’ll be raising our spirits as we drink ours with their inimitable hot take on trad and balladry. \nWe met them back in 2019 to talk to them about their pursuits as TPM.

SUMMARY:Caligari 100
DESCRIPTION:Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide when it premiered in Berlin on February 26th\, 1920. It changed the direction of the art form like no other film has since. Now presented in a definitive restoration\, the film’s chilling\, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again. At a local carnival in a small German town\, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare\, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night\, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… \nIncalculably influential\, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets\, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror\, film noir\, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). \nThis special centenary screening with feature a new score performed live by Adrian Crowley\, Sean Mac Erlaine\, Matthew Nolan and Barry Adamson (Magazine / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) with live processing by Neil O’Connor. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:This Hostel Life
DESCRIPTION:This Hostel Life\, a series of stories by Nigerian\, Irish-based writer Melatu Uchenna Okorie\, written while living in Direct Provision\, serves as the inspirational fuel for this installation opera by Evangelia Rigaki. The performance takes place down in the Christ Church Cathedral crypt\, where the audience will encounter singers from the Irish National Opera Studio and musicians who perform the four scenes on loops\, enabling them to pause and relive different parts of the narrative. \nRigari says: ““It has been a big privilege and learning experience to be involved in the inaugural INO Studio and to have the opportunity to develop my new installation-opera based on Melatu Uche Okorie’s captivating stories. The work is tailored to the voices and theatrical talents of the INO Studio opera singers and is written for the musicians of the recently established Dublin based new-music ensemble Parabasis.” \nMelatu Uchenna Okorie says: “The style and language of the stories in This Hostel Life\, are both experimental and new. It’s kind of befitting I think\, that the work text is the inspiration behind a unique and original installation opera” \nSep 26 & 28\, Christ Church Cathedral

SUMMARY:Massive Attack: Mezzanine XX1
DESCRIPTION:Mezzanine is Massive Attack’s third album and was released in April 1998. it marked a departure from the more laidback offerings of Blue Lines and Protection with darker undercurrents in their triphop explorations. Teardrop\, Angel and Inertia Creeps remain standard-bearer tracks from Massive Attack’s long-standing career. This show promises “custom audio reconstructed from the original samples and influences” in what Robert Del Naja promises to be “our own personalised nostalgia nightmare head trip.”
