SUMMARY:National Symphony Orchestra and Marin Alsop: Beethoven\, Rouse and Stravinsky
DESCRIPTION:One of the foremost conductors of our time\, Marin Alsop makes her much anticipated return to the National Symphony Orchestra on 1st December with Beethoven’s vivid opera-in-miniature\, Leonore Overture No 3\, and the raw elemental punch of and power of Stravinsky’s history-making masterpiece\, The Rite of Spring. \nAlsop has been credited with shattering the glass ceiling for female conductors. She is the first woman to serve as the head of a major orchestra in the United States\, South America\, Austria and Britain. She made history as the first female musical conductor of London’s Last Night of the Proms ten years ago\, and recently became the first woman and the first American to guest conduct three Last Nights in the festival’s 128-year history. \n \nAlsop is a dedicated and vocal champion of emerging talent and\, during her time in Dublin\, she will lead a weeklong conducting masterclass at the National Concert Hall with eight of the world’s most promising young conductors (26 Nov – 1 Dec). In advance on her concert with the NSO on 1st December\, members of the public have an opportunity to watch her at work during one of the masterclasses (1.30pm on Tuesday\, 28th November). SUMMARY:The Guinness Choir
DESCRIPTION:The Guinness Choir present Mozart’s Requiem and his Mass in C Minor. \nThis is a rare opportunity to experience and enjoy Mozart’s two great masterpieces – the Requiem and the Mass in C Minor. \nThe Requiem was Mozart’s final work\, composed in the short period before his death in December 1791. He was only 35. Though completed by others in his circle\, Mozart\, as with the Mass in C Minor\, which he had mostly written by the mid 1780s\, captures the drama and visceral emotion of the liturgy. \nThough much scholarly debate continues as to who completed the pieces\, there is no escaping the magnificence and virtuosic demands of both\, such that generations of artists have been inspired by these great masterpieces ever since. Don’t miss the dramatic and hopeful beauty that this opportunity presents. \nConducted by Ciarán Kelly with soloists Kelli-Ann Masterson\, Soprano\, Megan O’Neill\, Soprano\nLeanne Fitzgerald\, Alto Andrew Gavin\, Tenor and Rory Dunne\, Bass

SUMMARY:The Road to the East
DESCRIPTION:Judith Mok and the Khoshravesh brothers                                – \nIn the 16th century the Jews were expelled from Spain\, and scattered East to the Ottoman Empire\, North Africa and even further afield. They took with them the Spanish language and the music of medieval Spain. Down through the centuries they interacted and mingled with the music of the East\, to produce what is now known as Sephardic music. The Dutch soprano of part Sephardic descent\, Judith Mok\, has been exploring and performing this repertoire for decades. \nThe Khoshravesh brothers\, now based in Paris\, studied classical and traditional music in their native Iran. They have joined Judith Mok in a programme which mixes the many traditions of West and East\, and explores their similarities and differences\, the cross-fertilisations. They will be performing together Sephardic songs\, classical Persian music\, and in addition\, they will perform other music from the 16th century\, such as John Dowland\, using traditional instruments. \nJudith Mok – Soprano \nNima Khoshravesh – Setar \nPouya Khoshravesh – Kamancheh \nMani Khoshravesh – Ney\, Damam and Oud \n

SUMMARY:Four
DESCRIPTION:The world premiere of Four takes place in the Music Room of Christ Church Cathedral. This large immersive work by David Bremner is based on text by Irish poet Billy Mills and themed around the four seasons\, told through the life cycle of a leaf. The ensemble is Baroque flute\, viola d’amore\, soprano\, speaker double bass\, harpsichord\, piano\, community choir and live electronics\, with video by Mihai Cucu. Bremner says: “Mills’ poetry is deeply minimal\, and the constant near-repetitions of the contour material lead to a paradoxical\, dream-like atmosphere\, where the musical material is slowly transformed\, akin to a natural process. Time is experienced as a spiral\, a journey with constant reminiscences.”  \nChristchurch Cathedral\, Friday November 9\, free entry but advance booking advised via bealfestival@gmail.com \nPerformance times: 7.30 am – Winter   |  10.30am – Spring   |   1.30pm – Summer   | 4.30pm – Autumn
