SUMMARY:The Prisoners’ Lens
DESCRIPTION:The OPW presents a new exhibition of secret photographs taken by prisoners using cameras smuggled into Kilmainham Gaol in 1921\, during the War of Independence. \nThis exciting new exhibition\, which highlights the everyday life of prisoners in Kilmainham Gaol\, invites us to see the prison anew\, reminding us of the enduring humanity that can be found in the darkest of places. \nThe photographs featured in ‘The Prisoners’ Lens’ record everyday life in Kilmainham Gaol in 1921. Among the activities they depict are boxing matches\, Irish language classes\, religious services and drama productions. Other photos show the men enjoying the sunshine in the south-facing yards\, cooking food in the kitchen and playing with two dogs they seem to have acquired. \n \nAlso featured are letters written by the prisoners\, including some by a prisoner named Vincie Lawler in which he instructs his mother on how to smuggle in film and developing paper into Kilmainham Gaol by hiding them in a tin of sweets. \nThe prisoners were finally released from Kilmainham Gaol on 8 December 1921 following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Their release was filmed by British Pathé News\, making it the earliest known film footage of Kilmainham Gaol. This fascinating newsreel is being shown in the Gaol for the first time as part of this exhibition. \nAdmission to the exhibition is open to the public seven days a week. DESCRIPTION:Trinity Gallery Dublin presents Kingerlee at 90 by John Kingerlee\, an exhibition celebrating the artist’s 90th year – alongside the release of his new book\, Heads\, by acclaimed author Jonathan Benington.  \nOpening 15th October\, the exhibition brings together original works spanning the last five years of his practice\, mostly completed within his 90th year.  \nHeads is the third book dedicated to Kingerlee’s work and will focus exclusively on his head paintings while bringing together 90 works ranging from 1962 to 2026.   \nHe says\, “Paintings are like wild horses in a sense for me. I want my wild horses roaming the prairie in the uplands free. SUMMARY:LORE: Mexican & Irish Folklore - Minaw Collective
DESCRIPTION:Minaw Collective presents LORE\, a group exhibition exploring Irish and Mexican folklore through contemporary visual art\, hosted by the Embassy of Mexico in Ireland from October 16th to 30th 2026. \nBringing together new work by members of the Ireland-based collective\, LORE draws on folklore\, mythology\, symbolism and storytelling\, looking at the ways inherited stories continue to live through retelling and reinterpretation. \nClaire Prouvost – oil on canvas\nAcross distinct artistic practices\, the exhibition considers how folklore carries ideas of place\, memory\, nature\, belief and belonging. \nThe exhibition creates a meeting point between two cultures where folklore and storytelling have long held cultural significance\, exploring both their distinctive traditions and the connections that can emerge between them. \n \nThe exhibition also reflects Minaw Collective’s own evolving story. Rooted in Ireland’s street-art\, graffiti and mural community\, Minaw has grown over more than a decade into a collective whose members work across public art\, illustration\, painting and wider studio practice. LORE brings those individual voices together around a shared subject while allowing each artist to approach folklore from their own perspective. \nArtists include Anna Doran\, Claire Prouvost\, ESTR\, Gabriela Joyce\, Holly Pereira\, Hixxy\, Kin MX\, Klo-wi\, Loki PookaDubh\, MyfanwyNia\, Novice\, Ohhi\, Sarah Bracken Soper\, Zippy\, and Zurdie. \nFor public visits during the exhibition\, the Embassy advises visiting hours of 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm to 5.0 pm\, with last admission at 4.45pm. The script of the scenes shot in Cleary’s are still kept behind the bar to this day. \n \nLiam Neeson\, Julia Roberts and Aidan Quinn stared in Neil Jordan’s historical biopic of The Irish revolutionary\, the man who led a guerrilla war against the UK\, helped negotiate the creation of the Irish Free State\, and led the National Army during the Irish Civil War. \nThis November sees the 30th anniversary of the Irish release of the historical epic\, and film website Film In Dublin will be hosting an anniversary screening of the film on Sunday 15th November in Cleary’s. \nFilm In Dublin founder and head writer Luke Dunne will be on hand to introduce the film\, the biggest ever made in Dublin at the time. The Dalkey Original Print Fair returns for its Winter Fair on November 21 and 22\, bringing seven established printmakers to Our Lady’s Hall for a weekend celebrating original art and creative craftsmanship. \nNow on its third outing\, the free fair offers a chance to meet the artists\, discover the techniques behind their work and buy directly from the makers. \nExpect everything from landscapes and urban scenes to people and nature\, spanning styles from representational to abstract.
