Audio Review: Hilary Woods – Colt

Hilary Woods

Colt

[Sacred Bones]

The record that Hilary Woods’ debut full-length, Colt, most reminds me of is Cat Power’s You Are Free.

Woods, like Chan Marshall, leans on restraint and repetition throughout.

Uncomplicated arpeggiated motifs sway patiently back and forth between two chords, over which Woods’ voice explores her personal meditations.

Woods has occupied the reverb-washed orbit of ’80s 4AD bands since her first solo EP in 2014, but Colt is her most refined and definitive sonic statement thus far.

Brava.
