Introducing Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series

Posted October 3, 2017 in Music Features

It conjures up memorable scenes and burrows its way into your mind after the credits have rolled – the soundtrack is an essential part of the cinematic experience; as important to the resonance of a film as its direction, cast or even plot. It can be the defining element which tips a popular movie into a cult classic.

The Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series is bringing new life to classic film with unique interpretations by two of the country’s most sought after live acts. Le Galaxie and BARQ are set to deliver their own inimitable contemporary take on Apocalypse Now and Pulp Fiction in a series of gigs in venues across Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Limerick and Sligo.

Kicking off in Whelan’s, Dublin on Friday October 13th, Le Galaxie will bring their boundless energy and creative flair to the stage as they perform their own interpretation of the Apocalypse Now soundtrack. Widely recognised as one of the best war films in history; the Dublin synth-poppers will take inspiration from its iconic soundtrack, which features artists such as The Rolling Stones and The Doors, to produce a one-off Le Galaxie creation.

Speaking on the Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series, Le Galaxie’s frontman Michael Pope said, “We are always looking at new ways to reinvent ourselves and create something unique for our fans. Working with Smithwick’s on the Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series has been incredibly exciting and an opportunity for us to push creative boundaries and produce an original piece of work, which not only reflects our love for movies, but also champion the music behind them that has gained cult status in its own right.”

If you ask anyone what the most memorable scene in Pulp Fiction is, they won’t hesitate in citing the iconic moment of Mia and Vincent’s dance set to Chuck Berry’s ‘You Never Can Tell’ and the instantly recognisable image of John Travolta and Uma Thurman with their hip twists and finger slices. As part of the Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series, BARQ will introduce their signature ‘agro-soul’ sound to one of the world’s coolest mixtapes. Prepare to be wowed as they reimagine Quentin Tarantino’s much-loved 1994 film soundtrack in Dolans, Limerick, on Tuesday October 17th.

Likewise, Jess Kav of BARQ explains, “We are so excited about being involved in Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series. There are so many iconic movie soundtracks to choose from, but we felt the mixture of surf, soul and rock from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack was a great fit for BARQ and complements our sound nicely.”

The Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series gigs will be supported and opened by music journalist and DJ, Nialler9 or DJ Sally Cinnamon. As part of the series, Nialler9 has produced a bespoke playlist featuring notable movie soundtracks which he and Sally will roll out across the series.

Tickets to Smithwick’s Soundtrack Series are priced at €15.00, which includes booking fee and a pint of Smithwick’s (Smithwick’s Blonde, Pale or Red Ale). Over 18s only.
