The Choice Music Awards is an annual celebration of the best Irish albums. We delve a little deeper to discover the story behind the album artwork chosen by some of the contenders and its relationship to the music in question.
Lisa Hannigan worked with the New York based Irish photographer Rich Gilligan and designer Amanda Chiu for her cover.
“The photograph was taken by Rich Gilligan and I worked with a designer called Amanda Chiu to create the cover. We kept it as simple and stark as we could. There’s a frankness to the photograph which felt right. Though much of the record is about feeling lost and unmoored in your own life, there’s an honesty in it that needed something forthright and direct.
Initially I was against using a photograph of myself on the cover. I wanted something more oblique. Over time though I kept coming back to Rich’s photograph (taken in his studio in New York) as it seemed to have an energy to it that my other possibilities were missing. It was a very quick and relaxed shoot which I think translates into the photograph.”
