The late Larry Sultan’s Pictures From Home, a collection of photographs taken of his parents in the San Fernando Valley from 1982 to 1992, questions societal expectations of gender and aging.

“These are my parents. From that simple fact, everything follows,” said Sultan.

First published in 1992 to widespread acclaim, Sultan combines contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan’s own writings and other memorabilia.

It has been hailed by renowned photographer Alec Soth as a “masterpiece of narrative photography” and is reissued this spring.
