Ahead of this year’s Open House Dublin (OHD) we’ve teamed up with our pals the Irish Architecture Foundation. who have invited some of Dublin’s creative souls to select their top five buildings or events using the ‘my list’ option on the Open House website.

Following on from the five picks of Emma Clarke of Dublin Ghost Signs, architect and musician Oisín Jacob of alt-rock band Heroes in Hiding, has put together five selected highlights from the Open House Dublin 2018 programme.

Conservatory Room

A small extension by David Leech Architects which aims to create a comforting atmosphere by combining simple construction techniques with a tasteful understanding of colour and materiality. It’s encapsulating exposed timber ceiling creates a rhythm in the space which extends into the garden forming a simple pergola and outhouse.

14 Henrietta Street

A newly opened tenement museum which highlights an important part of Dublin’s history that holds special relevance during our current period of national dilemma. The building was converted from Georgian townhouse to a series of flats in the early 1900’s. Up to one hundred people (17 families!) are believed to have lived in the building at one point which fell into disrepair during the 1970’s.

Courtyard House

An extension to, and re-imagination of, a 1930’s terrace house in Crumlin by dePaor Architects. Three courtyards, two fireplaces and a series of permeable screens are used to create a compelling arrangement of internal and external rooms.

Dublin Food Markets

The fruit and vegetable markets have played a vital role in the city since their conception in 1892 and also play host some Dublin’s finest characters. Make sure to pop into Hacienda Bar across the road for the full experience.

Busarás

One of Dublin’s most underrated buildings. Whether you have spent an unwanted amount of time in the terminal hall or just hold a grudge against Ireland’s bus services, this is a great opportunity to experience a building that was well ahead of its time when it landed in Dublin in 1953. You should request to see the 200 seater theatre hidden in the basement…

Words: Oisín Jacob

Oisín Jacob is an architect and musician based in the city centre. He is currently the guitarist of alt-rock band Heroes in Hiding and has a keen interest in how his architectural work informs his music, and vice versa.
