Girls - The Academy - 23 August 2010
Live Preview 23 August 2010
"Tropical/gothic/thrash" isn't a typical musical mix, but that's how San Francisco duo Girls (both of whom are, by the way, male) describe their sound. Their simply-named debut "Album" is full of laidback, lo-fi, drugged out California pop, the same sounds that will be flowing through The Academy on 23 August.
With Girls' music comes an interesting history: lead singer Christopher Owens is a former member of the Children of God cult and was given his first guitar by Fleetwood Mac guitarist and fellow cult member Jeremy Spencer. After leaving the Children of God, Owens moved to San Francisco and met amateur music producer JR White, his future roommate and bandmate. The pair recorded "Album" in their home, using reel-to-reel tape and an old computer that would shut down mid-session. Now, in addition to touring, they're also working on a follow-up album, likely with equipment that actually works.
