In Search of Quality: Lucia Byrne Electric Garden & Theatre Galway

Posted June 26, 2017 in Food & Drink Features

Lucia Byrne is a final year student at National University of Ireland, Galway, and is studying to become a Health Care Professional. She currently works in the Glasshouse cocktail bar in Electric Garden & Theatre, as an escape from her studies. The cobbled streets and the vibrant atmosphere of the picturesque city stole her heart.

“I grew up Glenties, a small village in rural Donegal” says Byrne. “When I first arrived in Galway, I stumbled upon Electric nightclub. I loved the laid-back vibe of Electric. It was, and still is the place to be. The look is a patchwork of vintage styles, resulting in a unique bohemian environment unlike anywhere else in the West of Ireland. During my J1, I worked in a cocktail bar in San Francisco and fell in love with the art of making cocktails. Following this, I started working as a bartender in Electric. However, my main desire was to make cocktails. Eoin McGrath, my manager fortunately gave me a chance to work in the Glasshouse, our flagship cocktail bar. The two years have gone by so quickly. As the saying goes; time flies when you’re having fun.”

“Jägermeister is one of our top sellers here at Electric. Some people drink it with an energy drink but the majority of our customers prefer to drink it chilled and straight. Sometimes customers develop a love-hate relationship with stronger distilled spirits. This goes for Jägermeister too, as it is often misused in bars. Nevertheless, Jägermeister does have a place in many “fancy” cocktails as it adds that complex, herbal profile. Over the years, a selection of our customers are aware of the good times that come with combining Jägermeister in a cocktail. The liqueur has certainly found its place in the bar.”

“I frequently use Jägermeister because it is a versatile, herbal liqueur that can be easily mixed into cocktails. The Glasshouse introduced a “farm-to-bar” ideology, sourcing ingredients from local greenmarkets, organic venders and from Electric’s own Rooftop Herb Garden. The menu is simple, raw, organic and botanic. Small but down-to-earth, using fresh and exotic ingredients from the West of Ireland, such as rhubarb poitín, lychee & lemongrass whiskey.”

“Jägermeister is flavoured with ginseng, ginger and juniper berries. I like to create cocktails to extract and compliment these flavours and aromas. I recently made the Jägermeister Old Fashioned. Jägermeister offers up its own unique flavours that shine when paired with spirits like rum and whiskey. In this cocktail, I add a touch of maple syrup and chocolate bitters to create a savoury-sweet sipper. Customers adore it.”

In Electric, we look to nature, we look to our community and we look to the calendar to create innovative libations encouraging an appreciation for the time taken to make a quality mixed drink. That’s why we use Jägermeister”.
