The Bolshoi Ballet
From 31 March 2010 to 31 March 2010
Can you honestly think of any nation that portrays drama, tragedy and revolution better than the French? I can't. But ironically enough, world renowned Russian dance company, The Bolshoi Ballet is having a crack at it in Moscow at the moment.
Why, you ask, are we telling you about a ballet in Moscow? Isn't this Totally Dublin? Have we been duped into some site that's going to send us Russian mail order bride catalogues? Well, you might have been. But back to the point, following the link up of Pathé Productions and Ciel Ecran, the leading French distributor of live shows, The Flames of Paris is being broadcast direct and live to a number of cinemas across Ireland and the UK. After a successful trial run in December '09, Pathé have grasped a much bigger show in Vassili Vaynonen's 1933 epic.
Though we may not have heard of the show before, there are parts of the story that will feel familiar to us. There are moments when we feel like we're watching Les Miserables, and others that remind us of the treachery of the French aristocracy that we saw in The Three Musketeers. In addition to that, if you know any of your French history at all, you won't be lost. This 2-act production features more than 130 dancers onstage and runs for 2 hours 15 minutes with intermission
And with reasonably priced tickets, you won't feel like you're having your throat cut, but you will have the pleasure of seeing one of the finest Ballet companies in the world, live.
