The Government Inspector
Nikolai Gogol's classic satire of bureaucracy and corruption, 'The Government Inspector' comes to the Abbey stage in a new version by Roddy Dyole.
Nikolai Gogol's classic satire ‘The Government Inspector' was written in 1836. The original play is located in Soviet Era Russia, and is a comedy of errors which satirises human greed, stupidity and political corruption. The play has been reworked and reinterpreted many times from a Hollywood musical version to interpretations based in Indonesia, Taiwan and Seattle. This Christmas Roddy Doyle works with director Jimmy Fay to bring ‘The Government Inspector' to Dublin's Abbey Theatre. Running from the 30th of November to the 21st of January you should expect great comedy, spectacular dialogue as well as a culturally sensitive political message. In his adaptation, Doyle has transformed Gogol's crooked Russian Judges, Police and Mayor very fittingly to corrupt modern day Irish bureaucracy, something which will most certainly resonate well with a post Celtic tiger Irish audience. Doyle possesses a notable strength in capturing particular Dublin communities, as evident through much of his work such as ‘The Commitments' or last year's successful reworking of ‘The Playboy of the Western World', so anticipate a fantastic satire on the Irish political system . ‘The Government Inspector' features a host of bright Irish talent and as is usual with the work of Roddy Doyle, I'm sure that this classic but befitting comedy will sell quickly, appealing to a variety of audiences. Prices range between €14 and €40 so be sure to book soon.
