On The Batter

Anthony Goulding, writer-in-residance at The Complex theatre, presents ‘On The Batter' this December. A full length production set in North West inner city Dublin, ‘On the Batter' is a deeply dark comedy which deals with issues such as the fragility of love and loyalty. Goulding introduces two rival cocaine dealers, Decko, and his vicious oponent Jelly Tott who puts Decko's entire business in jeopardy. Wheelchair bound Matty is in no better a situation as he appears to be losing the love of his life to the unscrupulous Jelly Tott. As the pair rely on each other's friendship in this tough situation, pressure builds and eventually hidden truths emerge; how was Matty injured and why won't Decko's hiatus hernia improve at all? Conditioned by years of mistrust, these damaged characters fight for survival in a battle it seems they may have already lost.
Having grown up quite close to Stoneybatter from which ‘On The Batter' gets its name, Goudling is no stranger to the gritty characters and situations he often creates. His first play ‘Green' was nominated for Best New Play in the Irish Times/ESB Theatre Awards in 1997 and revolves around male prostitutes in Dublin inner city. The play is apparently loosely based on an incident he witnessed involving an acquaintance of his in the Phoenix Park. His 2009 success ‘Complexity' was based in an inner city Dublin flat complex similar to ‘O Devany Gardens' where he spent his formative years and deals with the concept of regeneration. ‘Complexity' became The Complex's first production in 2009, and this December the unique and unusual space becomes home to Gouldings' latest offering. To present another dimension to the production, it is open plan and the audience is invited to explore the space around the on stage action.
Anticipate Goulding's trademark witty and sharp dialogue from each of his tangible characters in ‘On The Batter'. Tickets cost only €10/12 and ‘On The Batter' runs from December 1st to 17th at The Complex, Smithfield.
